On October 24th, Dr. Michael Kruger came to campus to deliver a lecture on "The Lost Gospels: Our Culture's Quest to Rewrite the Story of Jesus." In this talk, Dr. Kruger addressed the following questions: "When it comes to the story of Jesus, which historical testimonies and documents are the most accurate and reliable in conveying who Jesus actually was? Can we even answer that question? If so, how?" Dr. Kruger provided case for the primacy and reliability of the four canonical gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, over and against later accounts of the life of Jesus, such as the gospel of Thomas and the gospel of Peter. Dr. Kruger's talk was also followed by a time of Q&A, which is included in the recording. This event was co-sponsored by Christian Union Nova and Manna Christian Fellowship. Dr Michael Kruger currently serves as the president of Reformed Theological Seminary (Charlotte NC campus). In addition to serving in that leadership role, he also teaches as the Samuel C. Patterson Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity. He earned his PhD from the University of Edinburgh, where he researched P.Oxy 840, a fragment of an apocryphal gospel, one of the thousands of New Testament fragments we currently have. He is the author of numerous books including works on the New Testament, the canon of the New Testament, early Christianity, and Christian origins. His website is Canon Fodder.
In a Friday morning lecture, Dr. Michael Kruger taught on the development of the New Testament canon by addressing five common misconceptions about how we came to have 27 books in our New Testaments. Watch the Q&A session here: https://youtu.be/wiAFxEnq8t4Gresham College has been delivering public lectures since 1597 through times of great social, political and technological change. Its commitment to deliver lectures for free to the general public has led to intermittent financial challenges to its generous sponsors. The arrival of the internet, mobile devices and social media have offered both opportunity and further challenge. In an era supposedly characterised by shorter attention spans, and greater competition for that attention, what space is left for the public lecture and what is its purpose? Why do people still want to deliver them? What makes a great lecture? What is the relative importance of an in-person v an online audience? Is audience size an indication of the value of lecture content? Can the public lecture survive? This lecture will address these and other questions from a personal, but hopefully informed, perspective. This lecture was recorded by Martin Elliott on 16th October 2024 at Barnard's Inn Hall, LondonMartin Elliott MD FRCS is Provost of Gresham College. Listen to this history lesson on American higher education with Dr. Michael Benson, the president of Coastal Carolina University and author of a biography about Daniel Coit Gilman, a pioneer in higher ed as the 1st president of Johns Hopkins University. Benson and I focus on how the then presidents of Cornell, Harvard and Michigan helped the trustees of JHU write the job description of the presidency that led to the hiring of Gilman. The discussion didn't stick only to history, but instead we used the past to talk about present day higher education across the country and certainly at Coastal Carolina. Benson explains why he thinks writing is an important skill and how writing this book changed him as a university president. 00:20 Trustees Attempt to Define the JHU President Job Description 12:20 Public Lectures for the Baltimore Community 16:48 Coastal Carolina's Presidential Signature Series 19:10 Older Generation Leaders Stepping Aside for Young Leaders 23:58 How Writing the Book Changed Benson as a College President Watch the interview on YouTube: https://youtu.be/F9BewhbRVrw

Most of our understanding of stars and how they evolve is based on the assumption that they are completely isolated in space, never interacting with one another. However, studies over the last decade have shown that many more stars than we thought exist in gravitationally-bound binaries, triples, and even larger groupings. The addition of companions increases the complexity in the systems, but also opens up the possibility for interactions between the stars and the formation of unusual astronomical objects. I will discuss the current state of the field, and some of the challenging open questions that continue to puzzle scientists. Presented 22 April 2022.
This episode is a recording of a free public lecture that Andrew Archer gave in Mankato, MN (3/24/2022). The advertised description is this: We love our smartphone. It is part of our body. We sleep with it and fear we will lose it. We touch it 3,000 times per day by pushing, swiping, and tapping with our fingers. It thinks for us and gives us what we want, but to no end. We become passive. We can't live without it. Americans average 12 hours of digital electronic media per day. We are dissociated from our body as computer algorithms reflexively predict what we will want in an endless cycle of craving. This presentation will utilize Transactional Analysis to teach you (1) how to better understand yourself and (2) the virtual world as well as (3) what we can do about it.

What does it mean to devote yourself wholly to helping others? In her book Strangers Drowning, Larissa MacFarquhar seeks out people living lives of extreme ethical commitment and tells their deeply intimate stories; their stubborn integrity and their compromises; their bravery and their recklessness; their joys and defeats and wrenching dilemmas. In this provocative conversation writer Samanth Subramanian along with Larissa contemplates what it means to be human. In a world of strangers drowning in need, how much should we help, and how much can we help? Is it right to care for strangers even at the expense of those we are closest to? What exactly do we value most as human beings, and why? This conversation was originally streamed as part of the The Bangalore Life Science Cluster and NCBS Archives' Public Lecture series and has been adapted to this podcast.

Einstein dreamt of a Universe in which space and time were curved by matter, and how black holes would represent the ultimate manifestations of his physics, and the possibility of a new type of radiation - gravitational waves. Sadly he died before the discovery of black holes and neutron stars, and so he was unable to witness many of the dramatic experimental confirmations of his theory. In this lecture the Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav), Professor Matthew Bailes will use Mixed Reality Technologies to demonstrate how scientists have used telescopes and gravitational wave detectors to explore Einstein's universe, and provide astonishing confirmations of his theories using observations of neutron stars and black holes. Presented 19 October 2021.

Carlo Rovelli delivers The Roger Penrose Lecture on the Quantum structure of Spacetime. In developing the mathematical description of quantum spacetime, Loop Quantum Gravity stumbled upon a curious mathematical structure: graphs labelled by spins. This turned out to be precisely the structure of quantum space suggested by Roger Penrose two decades earlier, just on the basis of his intuition. Today these graphs with spin, called "spin networks" have become a common tool to explore the quantum properties of gravity. In this talk Carlo will tell this beautiful story and illustrate the current role of spin networks in the efforts to understand quantum gravity. Carlo Rovelli is a Professor in the Centre de Physique Théorique de Luminy of Aix-Marseille University where he works mainly in the field of quantum gravity and is a founder of loop quantum gravity theory. His popular-science book 'Seven Brief Lesson on Physics' has been translated into 41 languages and has sold over a million copies worldwide. The Oxford Mathematics Public Lectures are generously supported by XTX Markets.
