Stress impacts hormones. The body will convert progesterone (the hormone needed to sustain a pregnancy and prevent miscarriage) and other sex hormones into cortisol during stress. This protective measure is not ideal to make a baby and mimics a famine. The result is the body switches to a stress mode, and impacts hormonal balance and the ability to conceive. The first step to healing fertility and improving health is getting out of a stress mode and back to your vital health through mindset and movement. Dr. Liz Berg, founder of Nourish Family Chiropractic shares her own journey with fertility and practical lifestyle shifts for optimal fertility and overall health. Some of the topics we cover in this episode: Quick primer of sex hormones Fertility markers you need to know that are critical for women regardless of desiring to conceive Lifestyle shifts needed to reduce stress When to seek targeted support Resources: Grab your copy: Food Freedom Book Connect with me on Instagram Show Notes Nourish Website Nourish Instagram Nourish Facebook

I want to share what I went through because I know it helped me to hear from others who went through their own experiences. I do not pretend to think that because I went through this situation that I understand anyone else's situation. We all have our own experiences and we handle those experiences differently. If you have gone through something like a miscarriage or difficulty conceiving, I can promise you you are not alone. There is someone else who has experienced this hardship too. And you are never alone because Jesus promised He will always be with you. And Jesus will bring you through this. In John 16:33 Jesus says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Review of natural family planning charts when we were “not, not trying:” how we identified our fertile window, peak days, times of intercourse. If you want to learn more about the Marquette Method of natural family planning, take my class: www.nfppharmacist.com/resources. The Marquette Method of natural family planning helped us know exactly when to try to achieve pregnancy, when I ovulated, and when to expect my next period.A note on days of intimacy - the timing does not always work out when you want it to!-Urine pregnancy tests detect hCG, a hormone produced by a fertilized egg that has implanted, and are most likely to be positive on the day of an expected period-My first positive pregnancy test was on a Sunday and then I started bleeding on the following Thursday-Trust your gut and advocate for yourself. If you think something is not right, even if your doctor or practitioner has told you that you are probably fine, speak up for yourself.-God can do miracles, but that doesn't mean He will every time. He doesn't always answer our prayers the way we would like him too.-Early pregnancy loss (EPL) is generally defined as the loss of a pregnancy in the first trimester-Miscarriage is a broader term, generally defined as the loss of a pregnancy in the first or second trimester-The incidence of EPL is as high as 31%. The true incidence is difficult to determine as many losses are not recognized.-Risk factors for EPL: age >35 years, prior pregnancy loss, or certain medical conditions in the mother or father-Previous episodes related to taking care of your health before pregnancy:Episode 59: Preconception health - featuring Dr. Liz Berg, DC, LCEpisode 36: Nourished for Life - featuring Kristen Jensen, RDEpisode 16: Self-care to Reduce Stress and Balance Hormones with Dr. Heather Rhodes -Exposure to toxins, pollutants, and other environmental factors may also increase the risk of EPL-Previous episodes related to removing or avoiding these harms:Episode 64: Tuning into what your body really needs - brain integration, nutrition response testing, and more - featuring Anita BastianEpisode 60: Limiting exposure to endocrine disruptors to optimize your hormone health - featuring Courtney Warday, RDEpisode 53: Safer Skincare - featuring Helen Helgeson, Crunchi advocateEpisode 47: Opening your body's channels with acupuncture - featuring Brianna Kraus, Full Circle acupunctureEpisode 44: Balance and support your hormones with herbal remedies - featuring Phyllis Jaworski, herbal practitioner at Sacred Ibis BotanicalsEpisode 22: - Thrive with a Functional Medicine Approach to Health - Interview with Dr. Melody Hartzler-Women with EPL are likely to have subsequent normal pregnancies.-Episode 51: A restorative approach to fertility - featuring Nora Pope and Dr. Jessica Liu, NDI am never going to say this was a good thing that happened, but I believe Romans 8:28 that says “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” I believe our bad situation can be used for good. What did you think? Did you know that the red blood cells that serve as the building blocks for baby are formed in the mom 120 days prior? Said another way, what you were doing 3-4 months ago affects the health of your baby. Dr. Liz Berg at Nourish Family Wellness in New Brighton, MN is a chiropractor and lactation consultant who specializes in helping women with optimizing their health BEFORE baby (preconception health). It was an absolute pleasure to talk with Dr. Liz, not only because of the incredibly valuable information she shared, but also because it was fun to reconnect! I know she was one of the characters in the first Christmas play I ever participated in (and yes, I still watch that VHS video at Christmas time!). I am thankful for Dr. Liz’s expertise in helping women care for their bodies and the bodies of their future babies. Here are the take-aways:-Optimal baby health starts BEFORE baby comes-What you were doing 3-4 months ago affects the building blocks of baby -Core components of preconception health include clean eating, toxin-free products, sleep, exercise, having a grateful mindset, and decreasing stress-Focus on 3 things you did great today - keep a “ta-da” list instead of a “to-do” list-Chiropractic care is at the center of preconception health at Nourish Family Wellness. Chiropractic helps your brain talk to your body so it can heal on its own-If you’re thinking about your preconception health, a good place to start is with stress relief and thankfulness-The Twinkle Care Program is geared to optimize the health of women before baby is “a twinkle in your eye”-Celebrate your nourishing and nurturing capacity as a woman!Tag Nourish Family Wellness (@nourishfamilywellness) and me (@nfppharmacist) on Instagram and let us know YOUR take-aways!!Learn more and sign up for the Twinkle Care Program at https://nourishfamilywellness.comMy next FREE “Know Your Body with Natural Family Planning” workshop is Tues 4/20/21 at 7:30pm central time. Liz Berg is the founder, recipe developer, and photographer behind That Skinny Chick Can Bake food blog. Liz is a skinny chick with a penchant for baking and three grown, yet still always hungry kids, a chocoholic hubby, plus an energetic pup who excels at crumb removal. As a confident, self-taught baker, she offers a plethora of knowledge, along with plenty of recipes for bakers and wannabes to peruse and enjoy. Liz's love of baking started in her teens with the tattered Better Homes and Gardens cookbook from her childhood kitchen. When she married that chocoholic many years later, she began to perfect her baking skills by creating decadent desserts and dabbling with food styling. Liz launched her food blog in 2010 to share recipes and tips with friends and fellow foodies across the world.
