In the early 1970s, the Builders Labourers Federation (BLF) in Australia provided a case study in workers' power and concern for the conservation of the natural environment. BLF green bans preserved dozens of working class areas and historic buildings, ranging from Aboriginal housing in Redfern to historic National Trust-listed mansions. In this episode we speak to Jerome Small about how the BLF became a union that fought for environmental and social justice, and the lessons we can draw to re-build the left in Australia today.    Read more When Sydney was touched by workers democracy by Jerome Small - https://redflag.org.au/node/6774 ‘I'm part of the union!' Under the ALP-ACTU Prices and Incomes Accord (1983-1996) union leaders in Australia agreed to abandon striking and struggle in return for having their wages indexed by the Arbitration Commission and the promises of the Labor government for a few social reforms. While the Accord is generally portrayed as being welcomed by workers, many workers angrily resisted the attacks on their wages, conditions, jobs, and unions. Veteran socialist activist and historian Liz Ross' latest book Stuff the Accord! Pay up! Workers Resistance to the ALP-ACTU Accord tells the hidden stories of how these workers fought back. Episode 1 (with Liz Ross): Hello! You’re attending to the Arc Poetry Podcast. I’m Doyali Islam, Poetry Editor of Arc Poetry Magazine. On this program, we invite one poet from the latest issue of the magazine to read their published poem on air and to engage in a conversation about how their poem came to be in the world – the impulses or creative processes behind it. Despite the fact that a poem’s origins can sometimes, in some ways, be mysterious to its maker (or makers) – we will attempt this discussion. My guest today is Liz Ross. Liz’s poem, “Feeding Iris Strawberries,” was published in Arc 85, the Winter 2018 issue of the magazine. Liz Ross is the author of Kingdom (Palimpsest, 2015) and After Birth, a second poetry collection forthcoming in the spring of 2019. Her work has been published in literary magazines across Canada, longlisted for the CBC poetry prize, and selected for inclusion in The Best of the Best Canadian Poetry in English. She grew up in Victoria and now lives in Hamilton, where she’s working on a collection of essays.

To Liz Ross, the president and chief executive officer of Periscope, it is vitally important to be able to learn, unlearn and relearn. Those qualities, she says, can lead to success. And Ross has had plenty of success. In her 20 years of experience, she has held leadership positions at IPG Mediabrands, Digitas, Tribal DDB, and roles in business development at Modem Media and J. Walter Thompson, along with working with top brands and even being inducted into the American Advertising Federation Hall of Achievement. In her position she sees technology changing how people view love and how they love – think dating apps – but our humanity keeps our relationships from veering too much into tech, thankfully. Still, she sees opportunity with tech, even if keeping up with the pace of change can seem daunting. “We have to embrace it and understand that change is the constant, not the enemy,” she says, adding that common sense is a powerful tool when navigating change. What drives the staunchly Minnesotan Ross is feeling like she’s doing something that's important, whether it's raising her kids or building an agency or doing work for clients. As a Minnesotan, she also has praise for local company Target, which gives back to the communities it is in. She states that because she wants to make sure that our behaviors as consumers and people mirrors our own values. A “must do” is spending time “outside of your own echo chamber,” meaning that we need to listen and interact outside of our own comfort zones with people that may think differently than we do, which can broaden our understanding and lead to greater empathy. Additionally, and importantly, Ross believes that “you cannot make a mistake” and that it will all lead to living without fear.

Say “Vegan” and most will answer “No meat. No Dairy. A person who does not eat or use animal products.”  The ensuing conversation often includes dietary choices, trendy restaurants and an occasional eye-roll. But for Liz Ross our guest on Collections by Michelle Brown being a vegan goes beyond a dietary choice. Originally from Trinidad, Liz has lived many places but calls Los Angeles, CA home. Ross is Co-founder and Director of Vegan Advocacy Initiative, (formerly Coalition of Vegan Activists of Color), a woman-of-color-led nonprofit organization.  VAI is an animal advocacy and vegan food justice organization that creates and events to encourage the public to consider a holistic way of thinking that upholds animal rights.  Their initiatives also encourage others to view animal rights as part of the food justice and environmental justice movements in order to create more sustainable and fair systems.  She is also co-creator of the People of Color: Animal Rights, Advocacy and Food Justice Conference, which takes place in Los Angeles and organized through Vegan Advocacy Initiative.  This conference is the first-of-its kind in the US that provides a platform for speakers of color who are leaders and activists in the animal rights, vegan outreach and food justice movement.  Liz also gives presentations on why issues of racism and classism matter when doing effective vegan outreach. A former police officer, Liz also raises awareness about the history of racial bias in the criminal justice system, mass-incarceration and the so-called “War on Drugs”, through presentations, and she also volunteers for organizations that are working to counter its negative impact.
