For much of the history of neurology, diagnosing a genetic disease meant giving bad news. Genetic meant incurable, often fatal. On past shows, we've talked about how this narrative is changing for certain monogenic diseases like Huntington's Disease, where emerging gene therapies offer hope for a cure. But what hope can the field of neurogenetics offer to patients with more complex diseases with both genetic and environmental risk factors, like Alzheimer's? Our guest today, Dr. M. Elizabeth Ross, is Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience in the Brain and Mind Research Institute and Director of the Center for Neurogenetics at Weill Cornell Medicine. Her lab works on the genetics of neurologic diseases affecting humans at every stage of the lifecycle. Today she'll help us understand the role of genetics in a range of neurodegenerative diseases -- and how and when clinicians should incorporate genetic considerations into patient care. It does appear with slight variations in Robert Bremner’s Scots Reels book from 1757: https://digital.nls.uk/special-collections-of-printed-music/archive/105003153 Also according to Traditional Tune Archive it is in William Vickers MS. Braes of Atholl from William Napier’s 1798 collection is quite different and fun for Uilleann Pipes: https://digital.nls.uk/special-collections-of-printed-music/archive/105015671 Bio on William Napier from HMS.Scot: Biographical info: Napier lived c.1740-1812, and died in London. He was a violinist both at Edinburgh's Canongate Theatre, and for Edinburgh Musical Society, before moving to London. (Alburger, 120; Macleod) He played in prestigious bands including the court of George III, and in middle life set up as publisher, later also starting a circulating library. Napier comissioned music from Haydn and was well-connected with other classical composers. (Grove; Baptie) (https://hms.scot/fiddle/source/201/) David Young: New Bigging. The Next Tune I play is New Bigging, likely named for the tune of Newbigging, in Angus. It sounds very familiar, but it also may just remind me of the mystery tune I play before it. Do you know what it is called? The Next tune I play from Drummond Castle is Kiss’d Yestereen. 18teens: Neil Gow & Sons: Oh How I was kiss’d Yestreen in the Second repository of The Dance Music of Scotland: https://imslp.org/wiki/Gow%27sRepositoryoftheDanceMusicofScotland(Gow%2C_Niel) 1840s: James Rook’s Manuscript: Oh How I was Kissed Yestereen: https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/musicfiles/rook/rook_pages/033.htm 1848: William Gunn: Oh How I was Kiss’d Yestreen, He calls it a quickstep, so I play it like I would a 6/8 march, then play it as written. https://ceolsean.net/content/Gunn/Gunn_TOC.html David Young: The Malt Man. This tune again also appears in Gow’s Repository and Rook’s Manuscript. 1828: Donald MacDonald’s Setting for Kick the Rogues Out: Can you recognize the funky gracing in the beginning? https://digital.nls.uk/special-collections-of-printed-music/archive/105683188 1812: Elizabeth Ross’s You Silly Fool or "Amedain ghórich" Elizabeth Ross’s Impressive collection from Raasay in 1812. Elizabeth Ross is a natural entrepreneur, connector, and systems change architect. People often say that she brings calm and joy to the room. Elizabeth is a true explorer and loves to find solutions that improve the human experience. From a very young age, she had to branch out on her own because of family circumstances. That path has created who she is today and is what fuels her passion for life. Elizabeth observed that we are on the cusp of a paradigm shift in how we do business several years ago. For a long time, colleagues would question these insights or say that “the world isn’t ready”. In her experience, that is not true. The world is ready. Our children and grandchildren are ready; we are ready to align our work with our hearts and with nature. The words love, soul, and spirit absolutely belong in the workplace. Why would any human being want to work for a business or company that is not invested in humanity? She is a singer/songwriter and a charity auctioneer. She has helped raised over $1M for her favorite charities in the past 20 years, including Riding to The Top-Therapeutic Riding Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Ronald McDonald House, Outward Bound, One Longfellow Square, Portland Ovations, and Girl Scouts. Outside of work, Elizabeth finds balance through the family, community, meditating in the woods, cooking, singing, mountain biking, and quarry swimming along the coast of Maine. Please enjoy! Do Extracurricular Math Programs Add Up?

The U.S. does not fare well in math when compared with other industrialized nations, as demonstrated by international tests like the PISA. So, for parents who want to help their students get ahead in math and can afford it, after-school programs that focus deeply on the subject have become attractive. There are plenty of extracurricular math programs around, but one run by the Russian School of Mathematics (RSM) for students from kindergarten through 12th grade, is particularly popular, serving over 30,000 students around the country. (Innovation Hub senior producer, Elizabeth Ross, visited the program’s headquarters in Newton, Massachusetts and found a lot of enthusiastic students and parents, as you’ll hear in our report.) Masha Gershman, the director of outreach at the Russian School of Mathematics and the daughter of one of its co-founders, says that the former Soviet Union’s method of math instruction has a lot to teach American kids, particularly when it comes to higher-level and conceptual learning. But Jon Star, a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, argues that many American parents - especially those in affluent suburbs where such extracurricular programs are popular - should ask themselves why they’re enrolling their kids in after-school math. It probably shouldn’t just be to get ahead in school - or to keep up with the neighbors. It should have to do with an intrinsic love of the subject.

Elizabeth Ross Holmstrom   “We are on the cusp of a major shift in business management and leadership practices; moving from boss leadership to service leadership, and employers are hustling hard to catch up. I serve CEOs who are invested in improving the employee experience and their business.”   Elizabeth is a natural entrepreneur, connector and systems change architect. She has over 20 years of experience in leadership engagement and wellness program implementation, has managed national account relationships and served as VP, Senior Health and Wellness Manager at a national bank with 26,000 employees. She left the corporate world after realizing that her efforts were not addressing the root cause of the problems she saw every day: stress, burnout, overwhelm.   After years of research and a successful pilot program, Elizabeth was committed to focusing full time on bringing powerful pauses into the workplace. Knowing that not every company can hire a Chief Mindfulness Officer like Google or Aetna, Elizabeth launched BreakTogether to help even the smallest businesses thrive. Through that work, she observed a growing field of professionals focused on improving the employee experience in the workplace through mindfulness and leadership development programs; howver, there were very few people helping employers connect the dots – across different service deliveries, departments, or line items. She saw a need to work on this more systemically, and architect a way for small and medium size businesses to access resources collaboratively, affordably, and strategically. This need is the foundation for the Mindful Employer Designation and Collaborative.   Outside of work, Elizabeth finds balance through spending time with family and community, mountain biking, cooking, singing, and quarry swimming along the coast of Maine. https://www.breaktogether.net/about/   https://www.breaktogether.net/break-together-podcasts/   Listen to another #12minconvo

Moore Professor of Biological Anthropology in the Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University and founded the Kibale Chimpanzee Project in 1987. He is best known for his work on the evolution of human warfare, described in the book Demonic Males, and on the role of cooking in human evolution, described in the book Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human. He has also recently published the book The Goodness Paradox: The Strange Relationship Between Virtue and Violence in Human Evolution (2019). In this episode, we focus on the main topics of Dr. Wrangham's latest book, The Goodness Paradox. We talk about the differences between reactive aggression and proactive aggression, comparing ourselves to other primates, and also evidence that comes from studies with hunter-gatherers, horticulturalists and other traditional human societies. Then, we discuss self-domestication, starting with the changes that usually occur both at the physical and the behavioral levels in domesticated species, and also some aspects of our sociality that might have favored self-domestication in our species, with focus on the role that capital punishment has played. Finally, we talk about group selection at the genetic and cultural levels, and also speculate a bit on the possibility of some gene-culture coevolution processes that were set in place after the advent of agriculture having contributed for the further reduction of reactive aggression in humans. -- Follow Dr. Wrangham's work: Faculty page: https://bit.ly/2TpMSZP Articles of Researchgate: https://bit.ly/2NKQC1K Books: https://amzn.to/2NSWdDr The Goodness Paradox: https://amzn.to/2ER2JHH Kibale Chimpazee Project: https://bit.ly/2H42OKq Referenced books: Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human: https://amzn.to/2TjSODn Demonic Males: Apes and the Origins of Human Violence: https://amzn.to/2ERDGEu The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined: https://amzn.to/2aY25WF Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress: https://amzn.to/2FRJrj5 -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, SCIMED, PER HELGE HAAKSTD LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, RUI BELEZA, MIGUEL ESTRADA, ANTÓNIO CUNHA, CHANTEL GELINAS, JIM FRANK, JERRY MULLER, FRANCIS FORD, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BRIAN RIVERA, ADRIANO ANDRADE, YEVHEN BODRENKO, SERGIU CODREANU, ADAM BJERRE, JUSTIN WATERS, AND ŁUKASZ STAFINIAK! The U.S. does not fare well in math when compared with other industrialized nations, as demonstrated by international tests like the PISA. After losing her mom at eighteen years old and her dad at twenty-five, Claire Bidwell Smith devoted her entire life to grief work—to finding connection, meaning, love, and light amongst loss and grief. She is an author, a grief therapist, and a speaker; she hosts workshops and is a book coach; and, her most important title of all, she is the mom to two beautiful little girls (with another baby on the way!). Claire so beautifully and gracefully marries the shadow and the light in her life and in the lives of others. In fact, Claire’s first book, Rules of Inheritance, profoundly touched my life. It was the first memoir I read after my mother died. I found Rules while engaging in one of my favorite past times—strolling the aisles of a bookstore. It practically leapt off of the shelf and into my hands, and as soon as I read the description in the back I knew that was by no accident. I devoured her book in a day. Sobbed. And read it again. I saw so much of myself in her and I felt so much less alone (which is the beauty of memoirs). I am personally so grateful that Claire has chosen to share her light with the world, and I am so excited to share her and her light with you all!   IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK ABOUT:  How memoirs can make you feel less alone in grief (and in life) Her journey towards becoming a grief therapist Why the five stages of grief are misunderstood—what can go, and what is missing How grief never really goes away, but instead changes How the love and light in life is closely related to the loss and grief in life How Claire’s experience with a psychic medium led her into researching the afterlife and writing her second book Why it is important to feel connected to your loved ones even after they have passed How Claire speaks to her children about death Plus much more…   RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE Mentioned: Claire’s Online Grief Course Dr. Elizabeth Ross’s Five Stages of Grief The Tibetan Book of the Dead Edgar Allan Poe—The Raven Caitlin Doughty—Smoke Gets In Your Eyes John Kabat-Zinn—Full Catastrophe Living John Kabat-Zinn—Wherever You Go, There You Are   Connect with Claire: Website: https://clairebidwellsmith.com/ Instagram: @clairebidwellsmith Facebook:  Claire Bidwell Smith Twitter: @clairebidwell    QUOTES  “After my mom died, when I was eighteen, I didn’t know anyone who had been through anything like that and I just felt like I was surrounded by my peers, who were living a pretty normal life, going to college and, you know, away from home for the first time and my world felt really different.”   “A lot of people struggle within the five stages of grief because they’re trying to make them work and they don’t really work.”   “That’s the surprising thing about grief—it can really come back when you aren’t expecting it.”   “The psychic mediums were amazing; they were really incredible. I had some experiences that completely changed my views of everything, and I had some experiences that were total bullshit—there was nothing good about it and you could tell the person was a charlatan. It was fascinating.”   “The sense that people got when they felt connected to their loved one, it was phenomenal to see and I was like, I don’t give a fuck if it’s real.”   “If you could pick any scenario to happen when you die, what would you want it to be?”   LET’S CONNECT Website: www.bryannadee.com Instagram: @bryanna_dee Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bryannadee Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/bryannadee/

Elizabeth Ross Holmstrom is the Founder and President of BreakTogether. Elizabeth founded BreakTogether to improve health and work in office/tech environments. With twenty years of health and wellness design experience, most recently as VP with a national bank and 26,000 employees, she’s witnessed the power of mindfulness. We’ve spent decades creating new ways to connect 24/7, leading to significant increases in stress-related illnesses. Her proven methods help people work better in 2-10 minutes a day, unplugged. When she isn’t practicing, she may be mountain biking on the nearest wooded trail and singing along the way. Click to tweet: .@BreakTogetherME is sharing her story to inspire you on Women Taking the Lead https://womentakingthelead.com/243 #inspiration Playing Small Moment Several years ago, Elizabeth was given the opportunity to manage a new program that lead 70 different work groups. On one of their monthly calls, someone on the client team berated members of her team over something insignificant and Elizabeth had to change conversation topics. After the group call was over, she took a walk to calm down before meeting with this person one-on-one. During their call, Elizabeth stood up for herself, despite her fears, and ended up forming a very good working relationship with that person. Style of Leadership Elizabeth searches for strengths in others. She feels it is always best to work on the things you are good at, and collaborate with others on the things you aren’t good at. What Are You Excited About? Elizabeth is thrilled about her new website updates. Now that she has a clearer product and a clearer path to describe, she is excited her website will reflect that. Current Business Challenge Elizabeth struggles prioritizing her to-do list. She needs to focus on important tasks and not get sucked into other things when she logs on. Leadership Practice Elizabeth is compassionate and always strives to listen and understand where people are coming from so she can better serve them. Belle Epoque (Delacorte Press Books for Young Readers)  Join us for the launch of this young adult novel! "With resonant period detail, elegant narration, and a layered exploration of class and friendship, this provocative novel is rife with satisfaction."--Booklist When Maude Pichon runs away from provincial Brittany to Paris, her romantic dreams vanish as quickly as her savings. Desperate for work, she answers an unusual ad. The Durandeau Agency provides its clients with a unique service-the beauty foil. Hire a plain friend and become instantly more attractive. Monsieur Durandeau has made a fortune from wealthy socialites, and when the Countess Dubern needs a companion for her headstrong daughter, Isabelle, Maude is deemed the perfect adornment of plainness. But Isabelle has no idea her new "friend" is the hired help, and Maude's very existence among the aristocracy hinges on her keeping the truth a secret. Yet the more she learns about Isabelle, the more her loyalty is tested. And the longer her deception continues, the more she has to lose. Inspired by a short story written by Emile Zola, Belle Epoque is set at the height of bohemian Paris, when the city was at the peak of decadence, men and women were at their most beautiful, and morality was at its most depraved. ELIZABETH ROSS studied French at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, and between semesters she worked in Paris and Brittany. She lives in Los Angeles.
