Music became Madeline Finn's path to healing, but it wasn't always that way. Before becoming a talented songwriter, singer, bassist, and producer, Madeline struggled with addiction, mental health challenges, and the journey of self-discovery. In this episode, she discusses her upcoming album Parts Work, which tackles themes of healing, addiction, and mental health through the lens of those around her (including her dog).Madeline reflects on growing up as a closeted queer kid in a conservative environment, how music became her emotional refuge, and her ongoing journey toward embracing her true self. The conversation also touches on the impact of societal pressures on body image, the role of meditation in her healing process, and the transformative power of connection. This episode is a powerful testament to resilience, personal growth, and the courage to live authentically. For anyone who has ever struggled with identity or self-acceptance, Madeline's story will hit close to home.__________________Follow/Watch/Listen/Subscribe: Instagram:@rootedrecoverystoriesTiktok:@patrickcusterprojectYouTube:@rootedrecoverystoriesFacebook:@rootedrecoverystoriesWebsite: www.rootedrecoverystories.com__________________Cast:Patrick Custer - HostInsta:@patrick_custer Tiktok:@patrickcusterprojectMadeline Finn - GuestInsta: @madelinefinnmusicTiktok: @madelinefinnmusic__________________Get Help (adiction, mental health/trauma):Promises Behavioral HealthCall: (888) 648-4098Website:www.promises.comInstagram: @promises_bh__________________Production:Produced and Edited by "The Cast Collective" (Nashville, TN)Email: info@thecastcollective.comInstagram:@TheCastCollective

She brought with her the ideologies and practices of Buddhism shared how that has help reframe her relationship with spirituality. From her emo and pop-punk music beginnings to a sober, vulnerable and honest place in her music now, her growth is undeniable. We loved this conversation and her spirit so much! PRIDE was born of protest. Riots. The necessity to love & be who we are without fear of reprisal, judgement, criminality, violence, or death. In many places, PRIDE is now a celebration. A place where queer, rainbow, & LGBTQIA+ people & those who love them (go the allies!) can be seen, heard, & embraced for simply being who they are. As a queer person, my journey to self-acceptance has been a life-long one. I didn't come out until my mid-thirties & when I came out I came out ready to do whatever I could to be seen, heard, & to support others to be their authentic selves. Whether it was in boardrooms, ballrooms, greenrooms, or in the public eye - my mission has been a simple one: to be seen so that others might see themselves represented in positive, optimistic, & loving ways. Being a queer kid in small towns, big cities, or in places where queerness is literally illegal means that so many folks around the world need voices, faces, & ideas that reinforce to them that they are enough. As they are, as they will be… as they always have been. Society is great at telling us what to hide about ourselves, my life is dedicated to the opposite. I'm certain that my only job on this planet is to show love, be love, share love & invite love into this world. This week's Kindness Warriors episode is one that celebrates PRIDE, queerdom, rainbow allies, & everyone out there who knows that love truly is love. To anyone struggling with self-acceptance or finding a community: let this be a love note to you. You're welcome here, with us. Always. A huge thanks goes out to this week's guests. Folks who, when I put out the call (or dropped into their DMs) sent through their thoughts on what PRIDE means to them whole-heartedly & without hesitation. You're all heroes in my eyes. And, in my heart. Happy PRIDE, whānau. Let's stretch the season out into every season. Let's double-down on lifting up others. This week's guests are Cheley Tackett: singer, songwriter, sister Janis Vogel: life coach, epic creative Hunter Kelly: author, radio host, soul-brother Clare Cheyne: sister, ally, documentarian Emily Scott Robinson: singer, songwriter, sister with the best laugh! Madeline Finn: singer, songwriter, baby shark Laura LaBarbera: my best friend & soul mate Haylie Craig: creative legend, inspiring human Dani Fennessy: sister, media personality Alice Soper: writer, host, rugby-mad sis Brooke Berry: host, creative, guru, a friend for the ages

Being in the music ecosystem provides loads of opportunity for serendipity. Making a connection with newcomer songwriter Henry Conlon is a case in point. A fellow KKFI colleague had been contacted by Conlon's team looking for on air opportunities in support of an opening slot Henry had at a recent Sundown Concert Series featuring Kansas City's own Casi Joy and Danielle Nicole. I reached out to Henry offering a spot with the understanding it was a Pledge Drive Show and I would be asking him to assist in pitching for donations. He was all in. He began writing songs in high school playing coffee houses and the occasional open mic. As time went on, he began to grow a small but loyal fanbase in the northeast and eventually cut an album of original songs at Dirt Floor Records. Since releasing his first album, Henry has moved to Nashville where he has been writing and performing nearly every night of the week, embedding himself into the songwriter scene. Conlon has had a variety of cuts with artists such as Zachary Scott Kline and Madeline Finn. His song “Reckless Love” released by John Hollier in 2022, placed on the Americana Radio charts. In May of 2022 he had the opportunity to open for Whitey Morgan and Jesse Daniel at the Bandit Town festival in Manor Texas and for Old Crow Medicine Show and Billy Joel as a part of the Greenwich Town Party, an annual festival in Greenwich Connecticut. Enjoy the conversation and in studio performance with Henry Conlon.

Have you ever had anyone say to you with great enthusiasm, “You should try out for American Idol!”? It's a well intentioned but generally a misguided statement for musicians and our guest today and best bud of mine, Madeline Finn, is living proof it's more something you get through than benefit from. Madeline was scouted for American Idol, went through the stages, and got that golden ticket, but it's not something she'd suggest for someone's career. Madeline shares the things that fulfill her musically and spiritually in this week's episode. Though opening up to opportunities is something Madeline believes in and encourages, the most important work has to do with an internal shift. Plus! Special announcement that Madeline Finn recently joined the SFG coaching team and is teaching DAW 101. If you're someone who just needs a little help getting through the DAW barrier to make the music you want, Madeline has you covered.

For Marcia, avoiding volunteer burnout is essential in order to continue sharing her Therapy Dog Charlie with others. In this 43rd episode of Therapy Dog Talk, I spoke with Marcia about her experiences volunteering as an American Kennel Club (AKC) Therapy Dog team in Georgia with her 3-year-old Golden Retriever Charlie, why she has always referred to him as “a Puppy with a Purpose”, and the incredible pet therapy resource that she's put together on her website while documenting their journey. When Marcia was getting ready to retire from a career of teaching, someone advised her to retire to something rather than retire from. She knew this meant it was time for her to find her animal partner to volunteer with as a Therapy Dog team. Soon after, she found Charlie and knew that they were going to make an impact together.Along the way, she learned that it was important to really know her dog in. away that allowed her to identify even small changes in his behavior. When she noticed a difference in how he was interacting with children on visits, she mentioned it to her community of fellow Therapy Dog handlers and they helped her see that Charlie's current pace may burn him out from the work that he loved to do. Marcia gave Charlie a week off and he bounced right back to his earlier self while on visits. Now Marcia knows that even though it can be hard to say no, it's important for them to cut back on visits and find a pace that both she and Charlie can enjoy for years to come while avoiding volunteer burnout. The relationship that Marcia has built with Charlie has led to a deeper understanding of who he is and allows her to not only identify when he needs some time off but also to help predict when a situation may be too much. While Charlie can typically handle even a challenging environment, it is without a doubt that he values how much care Marcia puts into knowing his needs and being his biggest advocate. If you're ready to hear about how Marcia and Charlie are making an impact in their area, let's dive in:In this episode, we discuss …Why the book Madeline Finn and the Therapy Dog holds so much meaning for Marcia. How Charlie is a good fit for Therapy Dog work. What Marcia does to help protect Charlie from volunteer burnout.Give it a listen and let me know which part you found the most helpful, then follow their journey at @charliethetherapy.•Interested in getting started as a Therapy Dog but don't know where to begin? On today’s episode, Madeline Finn and I talk about her early start in music, the lessons she learned as an American Idol contestant, and how she plans to move forward as a musician using Patreon to sustain herself and leveraging that commitment to fans to fuel her creativity. This one runs pretty long, closing in on the 90 minute mark, but I promise you I cut everything that I could. In any case, I blame Madeline, she was such a fun guest. We, as a society, have this issue with talking about money. For some reason, it’s taboo and completely forbidden for us to discuss money even though we are all dependent on it. Thankfully I have a friend who is more than willing to talk about finance with me. Madeline Finn flanks me this week as we talk about the principles we use to make money as a freelance artist.
