Unmasking Your True Self: Discovering Freedom Beyond the Faux Self When we operate from our faux self, we may find ourselves making choices based on what we think we should want or what will garner approval from others. This can manifest in various ways, such as pursuing a career that looks good on paper but does not fulfill us, or acquiring material possessions to impress others rather than to satisfy our own desires. Tanya shares the story of a client who felt trapped in a high-paying job that brought her no joy, illustrating how the faux self can lead to a life that feels suffocating and unfulfilling. Tonya explores the profound question, "Who are you really?" She shares her morning routine and the productivity that comes with starting the day early. She introduces a life-changing concept she learned from Martha Beck during her coach training: the distinction between the social self and the essential self. This episode delves into how understanding this concept can empower listeners to shift from feeling like victims of their circumstances to becoming creators of their own lives, our own true identities and explores the origins of their self-perceptions, prompting a deeper exploration of personal authenticity.
Paul Selig is considered to be one of the foremost spiritual channels working today. In his breakthrough works of channeled literature — I Am the Word, The Book of Love and Creation, The Book of Knowing and Worth, The Book of Mastery, The Book of Truth, The Book of Freedom, and the Beyond the Known Trilogy: Realization, Alchemy, and The Kingdom (see books page) — author and medium Paul Selig has recorded an extraordinary program for personal and planetary evolution as humankind awakens to its own divine nature. Paul was born in New York City and received his master's degree from Yale. A spiritual experience in 1987 left him clairvoyant. As a way to gain a context for what he was beginning to experience he studied a form of energy healing and began to “hear” for his clients. Described as “a medium for the living,” Paul has the unique ability to step-into and “become” the people his clients ask about, often taking on their personalities and physical characteristics as he “hears” them telepathically. Paul's work is widely featured in a variety of media, including ABC News Nightline, Fox News, the Biography Channel series The UneXplained, Gaiam TV's Beyond Belief and the documentary film PGS: Your Personal Guidance System. He has appeared on numerous radio shows and podcasts including Coast to Coast AM with George Noory and Bob Olson's Afterlife TV. ___________________ PODCAST CHAPTERS 00:00:00 - Paul Selig Intro 00:03:42 - Contemplating Death, Mortality, Stillness 00:07:30 - The Shift in Perception of Time 00:11:02 - The Non-Linearity of Consciousness 00:14:01 - Becoming Wayshowers of New Earth 00:17:06 - Paul's Childhood Psychic Experiences 00:20:32 - Seeking God Through Us 00:23:58 - Becoming the Doorway for Upper Room 00:27:25 - The Divine Self and Expansion 00:36:43 - Manifestation, Altering Matter & Transfiguration of Reality 00:40:40 - Moving to the Essential Self 00:43:47 - The Upper Room and the Denial of the Divine 00:46:59 - The Malleability of Form 00:50:23 - The Choice of Fear and the Futility of War 00:53:39 - Facing Fear and Reckoning 00:56:41 - Dismantling and the Mass Awakening 00:59:36 - The Awakening of the New Generation to Leadership 01:02:47 - The Generational Fall of Kingdoms, Religion, Structures 01:09:01 - Paul's Channeling Process 01:13:10 - Time Capsule Question ___________________ Guest: Paul Selig | World-Renowned Channeler of the Guides Website | https://paulselig.com/ All Channeled Literature | https://paulselig.com/books/ Latest: Book of Innocence, Manifestation Trilogy | https://paulselig.com/books/innocence/ Members Community | https://www.studentsoftheguides.com/ Book a Reading with Paul | https://paulselig.com/readings/ Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/paul.selig/ YouTube | @PaulSelig Host: Emilio Ortiz Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/iamemilioortiz/ Subscribe to YouTube Channel | @EmilioOrtiz Watch Emilio's latest series on 4biddenknowledge TV l https://bit.ly/AwakenThe6thSense Shop Our Clothing Collection l https://www.unlockedmovement.com/collections/justtapin ___________________ Special Offerings to Support the Show: ✦ Make a One-Time or Recurring Donation on PayPal

Jordan Gruber is one of the authors of "Your Symphony Of Selves" and joins us to discuss how we all have multiple selves, not a single self. Some of the topics we explore in this episode include an in-depth look at The Health Selves Model in comparison and contrast to The Single Self Assumption; why we mistakenly assume multiple selves to be pathological; how mental health is being in the right mind (self/selves) as the right time; and how we can start applying the healthy selves model into our lives today. We also talk about Monotheism's influence on the single self assumption—“the single god assumption”; how Buddishm's noself and interdependence relates to multiple selves; the difference between multiple selves and Jungian archetypes/autonomous complexes; how Sigmund Freud helped The Single Self Assumption dominate the western mind; and how the very origins of Freud's model of the mind might be in the gaslighting of sexual abuse. Furthermore, we also explore psychedelic journeying and healing from a healthy selves model; how we might understand the effects of psychedelics on the ego, if there is no such thing as an ego; as well as all of reality being fractal iterations of various wholistic expressions of cosmic multiplicity while debating the validity of The Essential Self, Self Energy, and our ability to live in relationship to “Ultimate Reality”. And, of course, more. Enjoy. ... How do you stay present in the face of perceiving an unexpected attack? What happens in your body as you take in the heightened expression of your child or loved one? As children move through adolescence, it can feel emotionally rocky, not only for the child, it can feel rocky for the parents. We can find ourselves reacting when we've promised ourselves we will stay present. Today let me share an experience I had with my youngest son, Rylan. I remember feeling momentarily stunned as I heard him cry out, “You're not my mom, you're a hologram!” His eyes were wide, and the corners of his lips were turned downward. I automatically slowed down my inner experience and took a deep breath in through my nostrils. I noticed my stomach was tight and my breathing was shallow. As I monitored my inner world, I further noticed my back was rigid, and the whole of my experience felt surreal, as if I was looking out of my eyes from a great distance. When we check within the body to notice the layers of perception, it activates the mind-sight circuits of the brain. Letting the internal sensations of the experience fill the awareness, it enables one to direct the energy and information flowing through the nervous system with the focus of attention. Where attention goes, neural firing in the brain occurs, and neural connections are strengthened. This attentional focusing, with mindful awareness, enables our brains to literally grow more integrative fibers, which in turn, empowers our ability to regulate emotions, attention, the thought field, and the capacity to pause with reflection rather than reaction. When I dropped into my own inner experience, I noticed that my ‘apparently normal personality' had stepped forward, to protect and support my implicit memories of fear from overwhelming me completely. Rather than reacting from that disconnected self, I mindfully connected to Source Energy and felt an infusion of trust, faith, and companionship, where my Essential Self offered a welcoming and safe refuge. Here, in this inner sanctuary, it was possible for me to own my own perceptions, and remain in congruence with my own values, regardless of what others might say or do. I was empowered to experience an “inner-parts dialogue”. I remember hearing my inner voice say, “He's just getting so big! His voice booms in my ears, the words come so fast, and I have to hide!” “Hmm,” my Essential Self murmured, “Just needing a little acknowledgment what it's like to experience this energy, and needing to differentiate it within your body? Do you like it when there is a little more warmth and softness, for there to be space to integrate what happens in the now? Do you need to know and trust that you really do exist, and your experience matters in the world? Especially in relationship with the one who is your son?” As I soaked up these guesses I felt a visceral shift as my body expanded, my breathing deepened, and I noticed a perceptual lightness in my forehead as my vision cleared and widened. Ah – presence! I turned and gazed upon my son, and intentionally sent him pure love and light energy, from my heart space to his heart space. I watched as his body shifted, and his eyes caught mine. They slowly changed from troubled and upset to quizzical, I remember he asked, “What are you doing?” I responded, “Sending you love energy.” And gave him a warm smile. An immediate shift of softness covered his body as he uncurled and voiced softly, “Aw… Mom.” A slow, warm smile softened the contours of his face, as it reached his eyes. As we learn to become more present in life, at any age, it helps us to become more resilient, the capacity to remain more flexible and strong in the face of stress. Presence creates the gifts of happiness and well-being in our lives. Are you, or a loved one, needing support to strengthen your ability to stay present in the face of stress? Have you taken in a blue sky with puffy white clouds on a warm summer's day lately - or in the past? Can you bring to your mind and body what that felt like to experience? As you remember can you slow down your inner experience to notice any sensations in your heart space, your face, your belly, or any images in your mind's eye? I, personally, have found this can seem very stretching to pull off, especially in the face of stress or anxiety when I had been anticipating pleasure instead. Several years ago after spending the morning connecting and working with my horses, I was looking forward to going with my son to visit one of the local Horse Rescue centers together. As I went into the house, I heard my son express with intensity, “It hurts! It hurts! Get off of me!” I felt my belly clench and face tighten, as I quickly moved to his side to offer my support only to be met with, “Don't touch me!” as he began to desperately pull off his shoes and socks. Immediately my chest collapsed, my face flushed, and I heard my inner critic taunt me, “It's never going to change – this will always happen – you should know better by now.” Silently I placed my hand on my chest, closed my eyes, and looked up over the horizon to connect with the Light. I breathed into my heart space gently, and felt my Essential Self draw close. “Are you feeling bowled over with the sudden sense of disappointment? Just so worried that time will be stuck in a loop of never ending lack? I'm wondering do you really like it when you can sink into the inner experience of having abundant, endless support about you, like a warm billowy cushion of Love energy within and all around. Especially in moments of intensity with the one who is your son?” My Essential Self guessed. Time felt as if it stood still as I breathed in Love, and breathed out Love. In reality it took only a moment, yet that precious moment of self-connection fueled my capacity to extend that same gentle, loving acceptance to my son. I asked him softly, “Do your feet need more freedom today, or maybe they'd enjoy the support of deep pressure massage?” I noticed his body shift and soften in response, as he made a request, “I need a hug.” In terms of building neural structure, what matters is not the event or circumstance itself, but slowing down to notice your embodied experience (without making it wrong) then consciously choosing to sink into allowing, and uncovering, a sense of Love. When I remembered to look up (with my eyes closed) to take in the wide expanse of blue sky and to focus with intention on the puffy white clouds I saw there (in my mind's eye) I could dip into the sensations of warmth, lightness, and happiness in my body, and notice, enrich, and absorb, how beautiful life is when seen as an opportunity. Would you like to experience more of a sense of freedom in your life? After walking up the stairs early one morning, I heard my lungs begin to wheeze, and as a rattling stirred deep in my chest, my mind screamed, "I'm not getting enough air - I can't breathe!" instantaneously my whole body tightened into resistance with such an intensity that blind panic coursed through me. My eyes desperately scanned my outer environment for some means of help, and in that moment, I recognized this inner-state of being on a cellular level; learned helplessness. As I stopped, frozen in the ever-present-past, another layer of implicit belief emerged; “even if there was someone there - they couldn't help me - it'd make it worse.” When that was not instantly made wrong by my inner critic, I felt a slight inner-shift as a tender aspect of my inner self emerged, which seemed very vulnerable and all alone. So completely and utterly alone there was no one else to reach out to, no one to see me, to hear me, or to help me. I resisted the inner impulse to flee (where would I go) and slowed my inner experience by leaning forward, elbows on knees, and gently held my forehead in my hands. I consciously focused on self-connection. I remember I felt my lungs swell, and my airway began to contract, the terrifying panic once again rose up within. An image of my horse, Shadow, flashed briefly in my mind's eye, of when he had reared and torn my shoulder from its socket and the associated terror of panic that had reached for me. I then remembered how there had come a time when I chose to live the inner practice I had been learning to do. To willingly and mindfully let go of everything at the very moment it rises; notice it is coming, it peaks, and then it leaves. So with every sensation, every emotion, every thought, every yearning or need, to willingly let go of my inner attachment to it at its peak as a continuous, nonstop process, allowing each layer to emerge naturally. Empowered by the memory of that vibrant experience, I closed my eyes, looked up above my inner horizon, and sensed the Light. I felt this Light and Love come right in, and consciously breathed the healing energy deep into my body. I allowed the Light's warmth to shine right into my head, to flow into my 3rd eye, into my ears, my throat, my chest, to flow down my arms, my torso, my stomach, my hips. I allowed this Light and Love to flow into my thighs, knees, and feet, I heard my Essential Self say, "I am open to receiving Pure Source Energy and Love." Then I sensed the Light flow from my feet into the center of the planet where - as above and so below - there's another space that provides Pure Source Energy. It felt warm and welcoming, like "Oh, I'm so glad you are here!" Yeah! So I let that Loving Light bounce back, like a mini-trampoline, up through my feet, my calves, my thighs, my hips, my stomach, my torso, and into my heart radiating out 360 degrees all the way around me so I was in a big bubble of Love and Light from above and below. (This whole inner experience happened in less than 1/10,000's of a second.) I chose with faith to let go of frantically attempting to control my experience by searching for help outside myself, and instead mindfully looked within my sense of Self to become aware of my Essential Self, which is always here, always now. What I learned was it's not so much about verbally describing my experience, as it is simply being willing to feel the sensations in the moment. As I continued to lean my forehead (3rd eye, prefrontal cortex) to rest in my hands, inside I experienced my forehead sinking into the chest of God and being held - tears of relief and recognition began to flow - I am being held all the time, I had just been blocked myself from seeing it and feeling it. I had unknowingly bought myself a label, which had been sold to me by well-meaning health care authorities, "I have asthma." I had unwittingly identified myself with the whole "asthma" program. I was experientially beginning to understand that the
I've been experiencing some post-Covid low energy and needing deeper, undisturbed rest for rejuvenation. This morning I paid attention to where my thoughts went when I first awoke. What is the first thing you think of when you wake in the morning? Are you looking forward to the new day or do you want to roll over and go back to sleep? Personally, when I paid attention to my thought life I recognized I was getting into the habit of a "roll over and go back to sleep and hide from the day" kinda thing, rather than making myself wrong, I got curious and invited myself into a deeper process with my inner Essential Self. "Are you really tired and needing deeper rest?" My Essential Self guessed. I felt my body soften, gently uncurling, with my eyes still closed in a semi-slumber. Slowly awakening me, my Essential Self asked with care, "Maybe you are needing some shared reality and acknowledgement for the complexity of all that you hold and do in a given day." I spontaneously drew in a deep breath, feeling the relaxation that comes from a deep aliveness as it began to course through my being. "Are you needing the faith and freedom to trust you'll awaken inspired to create your day doing what you love?" A warm smile spread across my face as I opened my eyes, to stretch and gaze at the beautiful ocean painting, which was my mother's. The memory of my mother, the soft colors and imagery of the ebb and flow of the tide washed over me. I felt a deep healing resonance shift my inner experience from resistance, to one of peace. Endless possibilities gloriously stretched out all around me. When we lovingly listen to and accept ourselves at the soul level, right where we are, rather than berating ourselves for not being as we "should" be, it allows us an opportunity to be birthed all over again. When we then open our eyes we can see with the eyes of our soul. When we see the beauty of divinity in not only ourselves, but in each person we encounter, our relationships deepen, and the bonds of our unions strengthen. Creativity and inspiration are the opposite of routine. When you consciously know where you are going and have faith you will get there, allowing yourself to adapt to any changes, you can experience your infinite potential. You'll naturally act differently and attract consistently what you've aligned with. Relating to each other from the soul level, we are empowered to radiate out an expansion of love, joy, compassion, and harmony into our world. How do people change, and how does one move through the ripples that flow from change itself? Do you welcome change with curiosity and openness in your body, or is it something you'd prefer to avoid all together and your body contracts at the very thought of change? Stepping into new schedules can be quite an adjustment for most, and for many others it can require an enormous step of faith, courage, and inner growth. When my son, Rylan, was going to begin Junior High he was going to be participating in classes that would open up new opportunities for him; expand his learning, develop inner confidence, and create new friendships in community. The last month of summer we deliberately focused on preparing for these changes by gradually shifting our schedules, so that everyone experienced as much ease and flow as possible. One of the ways we prepared was by joining a gym, meeting with a personal trainer, (for Physical Ed) and then going to the gym. Waking Rylan up in the morning, to be at the gym by ten, was not a piece of cake. Let me share a story with you. I would speak in a quiet ton attempting to wake him gently. ”Rylan…it's time to wake up!” He pulled the covers up over his head, and I heard a deep groan, "Go away. I'm tired." "C'mon buddy," I'd coaxed, "remember we planned to go to Oz Fitness today!" "Stop yelling at me, I'm not going!" he said vehemently as he further burrowed into his blankets. "Leave me alone!" I felt my tummy clench, while images of a grumpy Rylan sprang to my mind's eye in living color. I rocked back on my heels and released a deep belly breath to sooth myself. Quickly, I imagined a big beautiful orange flower (his favorite color) opening up to embrace and enfold the grumpy image. I hurled it energetically out of my personal territory and watched it dissipate. Then, I turned to gaze upon the mound in the bed that was my son, I pulled back the covers, and said in a cheerful tone, "Okay, getting up is what we are doing! Sean is going to wonder where you are at! We've got things to be about - time to get a move on!" "Sean's coming?" he asked as he sat up. "Of course he is!" I smiled, "You guys get to work out together, remember?" "Yeah, okay, I'll get ready." Ten minutes later Rylan hollered. "I can't do it! I can't go! Just leave without me!" He came out of the bathroom with wet hair, and stressed, "I'm trying to get ready and nothing is working for me!" As he grabbed his hair and messed it up. As I opened my mouth about to speak, he said urgently, "Don't say anything! Just leave! Go! Wait in the car! Now!!!" My solar plexus and face tighten and tingled, it was as if hot coals were preparing to hit my body with intensity. I shut my eyes slowly and dropped into my body. As I sensed the sensations of anger, a tensing of my back, arms and fists, (as if preparing to hit) I acknowledged the underlying impulses of healthy aggression alerting me of the need for protection and to set clear limits around taking action to obtain the things we need. After the sizzling sensations subsided, I released my breath and took a few deliberate steps back to defuse the energy in my body and in the room. When I noticed the time, I felt so torn. On one hand I was worried about being late, and on the other hand I wanted Rylan to have all the space he needed to transition and experience success. In an attempt to reduce his sensory input, I turned my body sideways as I replied, "Rylan, I will be in the car waiting for you, son. The car leaves in five minutes.” His eyes widened in fear, and he shouted, "Don't pressure me! Just leave!" My scalp instantly tingled and I felt my Essential Self beckon me, saying, “I'm here with you Gloria. Rather than feeling his emotions in this moment, he has become swallowed up by them and needs some spaciousness, and for you to trust and believe he will find himself again." She smiled and gently wrapped her arm about my shoulders, "come on out to the car with me and
In this episode, Laura and Bernhard give insights and practical tools for self-work during these uncertain times. They explore three main areas to work on: Mindset, Psychological Somatic Work, and Spiritual Connection.
Have you ever experienced life as being so full and complex that there is hardly enough space within yourself to take a breath? Or maybe you experience so many differing things vying for your attention, you can barely even think, let alone be able to stay present and in choice, about what to attend to next? How do you live in congruence with your own personal values? Are you in full choice around what you are about in life? I notice within my being a complexity of sensations, emotions, protective impulses, inner images, stories, and a fluctuating ability to truly stay present to my full experience in a given moment. I am noticing how my growing ability to track my own variety of experience, with self and while relating with others, enables me to feel more alive, vibrant, and in full choice around whatever I am about. I remember one summer brought me the opportunity to transition into a different schedule with Rylan, the one who is my son. When I looked at my schedule, I sensed a tension in my shoulders that radiated up my neck as one part of myself wondered how on earth I would possibly be able to maintain the flow of my work. Pausing a moment, I turned slightly, and felt the welcoming warmth of my Essential Self acknowledge just how much I love what I do. A few needs that are met are for inspiration, joy, meaning and purpose as well as contributing in the lives of others. Rylan was thirteen at the time, and growing into being a young man. His voice was deepening and he stood nearly as tall as me. I remember feeling a clutch in my gut, when I acknowledged how all too soon he too would be grown and ready to spread his wings to follow his own inner knowing just as his older siblings had. My eyes tear up remembering how each of my children grew so quickly and the opportunities to join with them became less frequent. At the time, I noticed my chest swell with a fierce love for each one of my children, and I deliberately chose to be about enjoying every moment I had to join with them, especially Rylan, during his very formative years as he developed into an adult. As I set my resolve, I took a deep, cleansing breath. I felt my throat constricted and then released as I became clear and focused. I smiled to myself and felt immense gratitude for my awareness. There is a complexity of experience my Essential Self holds while acknowledging the varying degrees of consciousness within me; the physical, the emotional, the biochemical, the mental, and the One that breathes across them all - the timeless spiritual aspect of my sense of Self. Wondering how will I navigate the waters of Life with the one who is my son? It's as if I am at the top of a mountain pass, preparing to glide down through the glaciers of ice and snow, sensing my way...a descent into direct experience...mindfully exhilarating in choice with each opening of the way - choosing to live In Relationship in the Now. This way of being requires diligence and consistent self-care to stay present. When we take the time we need, to attend to our own growth and development of self, we become more and more available to accompany others, especially our children. That's what I'm most passionate about. When love depends upon a feeling, it comes and goes as the feeling comes and goes. And when love depends upon the way someone else is - beautiful, or kind, or successful - it's vulnerable to the inevitable changes in a human life. But what if love could depend upon something deeper - not something inside me, nor something inside you, and maybe not even something between you and me? What if we came to know love as the very ground we could stand upon, or a wellspring we could draw upon that flows into actions and responses? Then love could include and infuse many experiences, including joy and grief, clarity and confusion, and all those times we feel let down or surprised or changed. This week's Turning Towards Life is a conversation about a grown up love we might cultivate over time, a path to walk, that is deeper and more inclusive. It's hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Here's a link to the details of the new Thirdspace Leading from Essential Self programme which we talked about in a previous episode and which is is coming up soon. And our year-long Professional Coaching Course which begins in June 2022. This week we're bringing a (characteristically concise) source from 'Pirkei Avot', an ancient Jewish wisdom text ('The Wisdom of the Elders'). Any love that depends upon a some-thing, when that something disappears, the love disappears. But when love does not depend upon a thing, it never disappears. There's something inherently artistic about living a human life, in all the ways we're called to respond creatively, sensitively, boldly to the conditions and relationships in the midst of which we find ourselves. But, for many of us, the 'artist in us' got suppressed by being unsupported, or unwelcome. So what would it be to reclaim our artistry and direct it towards the unfolding of life-giving possibilities in the world? And what would it be to be ones who can sincerely welcome the artistry in others, even when it (especially when it) challenges a way of understanding ourselves in the world that we my have clung onto for a long time? This week's Turning Towards Life is a conversation about generosity, welcome, creativity, and owning our lives in an expressive way. It's hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Here's our source for this week: The Art Spirit, (Written in 1923, the pronouns reflect the period) “When the artist is alive in any person, whatever his work may be, he becomes an inventive, searching, daring, self-expressing creature. He disturbs, upsets, enlightens, and opens the way for a better understanding. Where those who are not artists are trying to close the book, he opens it, shows there are still more pages possible.” by Robert Henri Photo by Danny Howe on Unsplash
So often our lives are ruled by 'clock time' - we're counting off how long there is to get something done, or we're aiming for a time-bound goal, or we're measuring time wasted or time used productively. But although this is the dominant way of understanding time for many of us, it is only one way of relating to the flow of things. What if, instead of filling time with work or play, we turned things around and allowed time to flow into our activity? And what if instead of trying to secure ourselves against an unpredictable future, we took up a playfulness with the unfolding of time itself? This week's Turning Towards Life is a conversation about living into our lives as an infinite unfolding, rather than a finite game. It's hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Here's a link to the details of the new Thirdspace Leading from Essential Self programme which we talked about in the previous episode and which is is coming up soon, and to our year-long Professional Coaching Course which begins in June 2022 Turning Towards Life is hosted by Thirdspace. Here's our source for this week: What Is Time? There are two kinds of games. One could be called finite, the other infinite. A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, an infinite game for the purpose of continuing the play… For an infinite player there is no such thing as an hour of time. There can be an hour of love, or a day of grieving, or a season of learning, or a period of labour. An infinite player does not begin working for the purpose of filling up a period of time with work, but for the purpose of filling work with time. Work is not a way of passing time but engendering possibility. Work is not a way of arriving at a desired present and securing it against an unpredictable future but of moving towards a future that itself has a future. [So] infinite players cannot say how much they have completed in their work or love or quarrelling, but only that much remains incomplete in it. They are not concerned to determine when it is over, but only what comes from it… A finite player puts play into time. An infinite player puts time into play. Our amazing capacity to separate parts of ourselves from ourselves - to keep the inner experiences of grief, or joy, or longing away and out of view. How this serves us. And how it can also lead us away from ourselves and all that we have to bring to the world. The letting go, falling in, opening that's available to us that can play its part in reuniting ourselves with what would otherwise be lost. This week's Turning Towards Life is a conversation about the possibility of letting ourselves tumble into our own hearts - something that many of us have been taught never to do. It's hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Here's our source for this week: Falling Down We try so hard to stay up To keep from falling down Yet there is a falling into ourselves, That is of the essence. There is a tumbling Into the heart That means we must open To our beauty and our pain. Without a willingness to surrender To a flow of feelings, Receive them with compassion, We may never come to know That sweet sense of oneness With ourselves, That simple bliss in being Beneath all our distress. We try so hard to stay up Yet there is a falling down, That is of the essence. — Nanna Aida Svendsen Photo by Angga Indratama on Unsplash
The cultural story of money that we all live in has opened up all kinds of opportunities for trade and exchange in the world. And at the same time, the story is easily one of transaction rather than relationship, of fleeting contact rather that the weaving of deep reciprocal obligation and care, of efficiency, mechanism and convenience over the vulnerability and gifts of connection and reciprocity and community. Is there a way we can live in the story of money in a way that binds us into the gathering of life? This week's Turning Towards Life is a conversation about how we find our way back to living relationship when the story of money might isolate us and have us feeling separate from one another. It's hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Here's our source for this week: Sometimes to accept is also a gift. The anthropologist David Graeber points out that the explanation that we invented money because barter was too clumsy is false. It wasn't that I was trying to trade sixty sweaters for the violin you'd made when you didn't really need all that wooliness. Before money, Graeber wrote, people didn't barter but gave and received as needs and goods ebbed and flowed. They thereby incurred the indebtedness that bound them together, and reciprocated slowly, incompletely, in the ongoing transaction that is a community. Money was invented as a way to sever the ties by completing the transactions that never needed to be completed in the older system, but existed like a circulatory system in a body. Money makes us separate bodies, and maybe it teaches us that we should be separate. Rebecca Solnit, from 'The Faraway Nearby' Photo by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash
How can we be the ones who welcome what has been lost in others, and in doing so be the ones who welcome again what has been lost in ourselves? It's a central question for our fragmented times. Here's our source for this week: The birth of new life is something to behold, but have you ever witnessed a revival? Have you seen a person meet themselves after years apart, hands touching through a mirror, eyes locked together, a smile so strong it echoes. Have you ever watched a person breathe after drowning, deep gulps of air that lungs welcome with shouts of, finally, finally, finally! Have you ever witnessed the moment soul sinks into body, the calm when mind and heart look at each other with love instead of longing. Have you ever placed your hand on your chest and with absolute clarity been able to say what was lost is now found.' by L.E. Stepping into leadership, on whatever scale, immediately asks a central question of each of us: What kind of person will I be? Can I be a person who brings out virtues of dignity, creativity, courage, compassion, persistence, humility, generosity and wisdom in myself and the people I am alongside? Can I catch on to the ways in which I contract into fear, or reactivity, or habit? Can I find others who will help me walk the path of attention, inquiry and practice that can support me in bringing myself to the world in a way that's most fully expressive of my intentions? This week's Turning Towards Life is a conversation about how we lead together in a way that draws upon our essential goodness. And it's an invitation to a new learning community we're launching. Here's our source for this week: The Call of Leadership We're ‘called to leadership' any time we find ourselves caring deeply about the world and people around us and want to respond with wisdom, resourcefulness, dignity and creativity – whether that's in an organisational setting, in national-scale leadership, in a family, because we've taken up a role in a community that we care about, or whenever we want to bring a new idea, possibility, cause or work of art into the world. Another way of saying this – can I lead from my 'Essential Self', the goodness and wisdom that's at the heart of each of us? Can I attend to being ‘right sized', inhabiting fully the life-giving possibilities that are mine to bring without shrinking away or trying to be bigger than I really am? Eckhart leads a meditation and then answers questions. He says the Essential Self is not defined by the personality, life circumstances or history. It's the transcendent dimension beyond that which is the only place we will find lasting freedom and true happiness. Eckhart explains we may not have awareness of our essential self consistently. He says we will lose it many times, then regain it. He shares that finding awareness is a gradual process of waking up to who we truly are.
When we're afraid, but not acknowledging our fear, we're most likely to act out of line with our deepest intentions. It's easy from the midst of fear to try to assert our power and control - by being right or over-certain or dominating others - or to shrink away from our own dignity by saying 'yes' when something else is called for. What if we could learn to notice and name our fear, to ourselves and others, and in doing so return to the qualities of wisdom, truthfulness, and reciprocity that give us the greatest chance of addressing the challenges of the moment at a right size and in right relationship with others? This week's Turning Towards Life is a conversation about 'right sizing' ourselves so we can respond to the world with the depth that is the heritage of each one of us. It's hosted as always by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. The ego moves forward by contraction, self-protection, and refusal, by saying no. Contraction gives us focus, purpose, direction, superiority, and a strange kind of security. It takes our aimless anxiety, covers it up, and tries to turn it into purposefulness and urgency, which results in a kind of drivenness. But this drive is not peaceful or happy. It is filled with fear and locates all its problems as “out there,” never “in here.” The soul or the True Self does not proceed by contraction but by expansion. It moves forward, not by exclusion, but by inclusion. It sees things deeply and broadly not by saying no but by saying yes, at least on some level, to whatever comes its way. Can you distinguish between those two very different movements within yourself? Fear and contraction allow us to eliminate other people, write them off, exclude them, and somehow expel them, at least in our minds. This immediately gives us a sense of being in control and having a secure set of boundaries—even holy boundaries. But people who are controlling are usually afraid of losing something. If we go deeper into ourselves, we will see that there is both a rebel and a dictator in all of us, two different ends of the same spectrum. It is almost always fear that justifies our knee-jerk rebellion or our need to dominate—a fear that is hardly ever recognized as such because we are acting out and trying to control the situation. This interview felt more like two friends and medical professionals sitting down to coffee than a podcast interview. We talked about our Wayfinder coaching program we're in, we chatted about our burnout stories (and Jillian turned the mic back on me to ask what my own pivots looked like) and we demonstrated a coaching tool on Jillian's thought that she didn't have enough money to sign up for a coaching program. If you're not on the path you want to be on, but lost the map and aren't sure what to do next, schedule a free mini coaching session to see if we're a good fit and to get a taste of coaching! Visit www.coachhopecook.com for more info on other packages! Take-home points from the interview: Burnout signs may include apathy, not caring as much about doing a good job or disordered eating, physical complaints like not sleeping or headaches or anxiety. Grinding through/showing grit is a societal expectation. Burnout is your Essential Self begging you to rest and recover In order to take time off, you'll come up against a lot of beliefs and thoughts about not being able to afford to take the time off. It's important to dissect these beliefs and see what's true and what's a thought error. Byron Katie has a method called "The Work" that helps you question your thoughts. Identify your support systems at work and home. Is your job a "people first" type job, or is it all about churning out productivity? Use therapists or coaches to help you see other options because when you're in the midst of burnout, your brain can't come up with any viable options to get you over the hump. When to consider therapy: If you've had trauma or grief and haven't addressed it. Consider coaching if you're functioning but want to function better- we'll teach you the tools for forward momentum Learning how to feel things in your body is huge because it allows you to identify which thoughts are helpful and which thoughts are causing pain Often our stories about ourselves aren't embedded in reality. We feel shame based on false beliefs. Like, "I'll be fired/perceived as weak" if I admit I'm burned out. Parables and allegories can be extremely effective teaching tools and have been around since people first started telling each other stories. In my years of research on personal growth, I've come across a countless number of these tales that seem so simple, yet carry profound insights that can last an entire lifetime. Here's an obscure one that you've probably never heard before. I came upon it many years ago and I'm still learning a lot from it. It takes place in a fictional, mythical setting. There is a river with a fairly swift current. On one side, there is a Highland with hills and mountains, and on the other side there is a Lowland that is totally flat for many miles. There are fairly large settlements of people living on each side of the river. The residents of the Highland are happy. There is plenty of food and water and creative systems of cooperation have evolved in every area of life. They are extremely intelligent people, practicing what they call “interdependent co-arising,” where everyone recognizes the value of everyone else and they all rise together. They are peaceful and prosperous, with art and music playing a central role in the culture. Generally, it's a great place to live. Unfortunately, the Lowland is the exact opposite. Although there is plenty of food and water there as well, the place is a dog-eat-dog world with every man for himself. Living life in a sophisticated jungle, the people compete with each other over all things, great and small. They routinely distort facts for personal gain, conning each other with dangerous half-truths. Fear and paranoia pervade, no one can be trusted, and serious physical fighting breaks out regularly. It's simply a constantly ugly existence. From the vantage point of the Highland, the people can observe the sorry state of affairs in the Lowland. But the Highland can't be seen at all from the Lowland. It's simply outside of the range of their perception. So, the people of the Lowland have no idea that the Highland even exists. Highland residents nurture the most nobble human characteristics, including, of course, compassion. The state of life in the Lowland is a tragedy to them and they've come to believe there may be something harmful in the atmosphere there that makes the people behave the way they do. They decide to invite the lowlanders to move up into the Highland and one of Highlanders, known as the High Citizen, comes up with a plan. Not only is he bright and kind, but he is also quite a strong swimmer. Knowing that the current of the river is swift, he will take two strong metal stakes and securely fasten a long, thick rope between them. He will plant one stake in a firm place near the Highland side of the river, and will then swim across the river to the Lowland side and plant the other stake there. Then he will tell the lowlanders about all the wonders of the Highland, and invite them to come live there, explaining that they will all be welcomed with opened arms. He will instruct them on how to hold onto the rope to safely cross the river. The High Citizen carefully constructs his tool and on one clear, sunny day, he puts the plan in motion. He secures the first stake firmly in the ground, then begins to swim across the river, carefully unwinding the rope as he goes. As he is getting closer to the shore of the Lowland, a few people have gathered to watch him. Apparently, someone had seen him swimming and thought he was a big fish. Some wild rumors started to spread, and when the High Citizen emerged from the river, about fifty people had gathered to watch him. He took the second metal stake and hammered it deeply into the ground. He pulled on the rope several times to make sure it was secure, then he turned and faced the small group. He starts to tell them about the wonderful world on the other side of the river. He tells them how bountiful and peaceful it is, that there is plenty of room for them all and everyone is welcomed. Then he explains that all they have to do is grab onto the rope and make their way across the river. But this is the Lowland, where paranoia is king, and the confused and frightened people misunderstand everything he says. Within moments, a hundred more have gathered, forming a small, angry mob. The more the High Citizen addresses them, the more hostile the people become, believing he is a villain who has come to steal their money and trick them into drowning themselves. Some soldiers have gathered and watch the scene from afar. One soldier remembers an old prediction that a demon would come out of the river, conquer the land and enslave the people. Convinced that this is that horrible demon, the soldier draws his longbow and shoots an arrow into the High Citizen's chest, who falls down next to the stake in the ground. As some angry lowlanders encircle him, with his last breath, he says to them, “Take hold of the rope and cross the river.” Then he dies. The soldiers then throw his body into the river and stand guard until it floats out of sight. Then they dispersed the crowd. That's the end of the first part of the allegory. As a prelude to the second part, consider the famous quote from Harvard philosophy professor George Santayana who said, “History is a pack of lies about events that never happened, as told by people who weren't there.” You can probably guess what unfolds in the second part of the story. After several years, all the people who had actually witnessed the events by the river all died. And the Legend of the High Citizen began to grow. But remember, there's no truth in the Lowland, so the tale was all based on rumors, exaggerations and outright lies. Religious-style groups sprang up. Now this was still the land of cheat and deceit, so the different sects battled each other over followers and resources, often leading to serious violence and bloodshed. But through it all, the mythical story kept expanding. At first, the story was that the High Citizen was an extraordinary warrior who had come to save the people but had been killed by villains. Then it evolved into the idea that he was a saint or even a divine creature, like some kind of an angel. Finally, he came to be seen as the incarnation of God himself. According to the story, strange lights had been seen in the sky and angels sang from the heavens when he emerged from the river. At one point, a fourteen-foot-tall stone statue of him was erected on the spot where he died. Pilgrims would come to kiss the feet of the statue and pay homage to the incarnation. Since no living person had ever seen the High Citizen when he was alive, the statue had no resemblance to him whatsoever. But of course, that didn't matter. And the religious battles raged on. Amazingly, the stake that he had buried in the ground, attached to the rope that led into the river, still remained solidly in its place. And because they had built the statue on the very ground where he had died, the rope and the statue were side by side. People still had a distorted version of what the High Citizen had said about the Highland and the rope, but the idea that there was such a place, and that you could actually get there, was always dismissed as just an allegory. The stake and the rope were just ennobling symbols of a better existence. And the truth is, nobody had ever seen any signs of life on the land across the river, and beside it would be sheer lunacy to try to cross it, as the current was just too strong. Still, every once in a while, some Lowlander would take the words of the High Citizen literally and enter the river, holding onto the rope. As bystanders watched, the brave soul would eventually disappear from view, never to be seen again. The Lowlanders would assume that the maniac had been washed away by the current and had been drowned. But that was just the view from the Lowland. On the shore of the Highland, whenever a Lowlander would emerge from the river, they would be joyfully met by a welcome party, that would happily escort them to their new home, which had been carefully prepared for their arrival. And that's the allegory of the rope and the statue. So, to me this is quite a powerful story. Externally, its meaning is fairly obvious. Throughout history, time again great beings have arisen, pointing humanity in the direction of higher ground. But unfortunately, their messages have been largely misunderstood. After they were gone, different factions formed with differing beliefs about what had happened. The factions often fight and kill each other over their interpretations of the message, which invariably emphasized peace and kindness amongst people. Unfortunately, this kind of ironic tragedy isn't limited to just one specific time, place, culture or religion. On the contrary, it's been going on in every region of the world since civilization began. And it's still going strong. Personally, I like to take the allegory one step further and also consider it from the vantage point of inner growth. What can this story tell me about what is happening within my own consciousness at this moment in my life? From that view, the Lowlands with the statue would represent that certain region of my ordinary mind where all the anger, guilt, fear, paranoia and all their destructive henchmen invade my thoughts and feelings. The Highland would be my heart or my Essential Self, which is the home of all the higher human characteristics. We all know them well – kindness, compassion, inspiration, integrity and the thousands of other better angels of our nature. And the rope would represent the stable, but narrow pathway that exists between the two. Some cultures consider it to be the size of a rope. Others say it's as narrow as a razor's edge. And some even say it's as subtle as the coming and going of the breath. It doesn't really matter. To me, the point is to make the journey from description to reality. It's like if you're dehydrated and you really need water, you don't care about the decorations on the bottle, the flowery descriptions of the source of the water, or the scientific breakdown of the molecules. You just need to actually drink the water and get your thirst quenched. For me, with the allegory of the rope and the statue, the question is, what am I doing with my time? Am I languishing in the Lowland? Am I holding onto the rope, making my way across the turbulent river? Or am I comfortably living in my beautiful home in the Highland, and loving every minute of it? Now, the wisdom of the ages would tell us that the answer comes down to the power of choice. They say we can actually choose our destiny, which is a pretty liberating concept. If I really do have a choice, I'll take the happy-at-home option any time. Of course, that's just me… Well, that's the end of this episode. As always, keep your eyes, mind and heart opened, and let's get together in the next one.
True worth and acceptance can only be sourced from your soul. The individual's search for worth, acceptance, and love is humanity's search for belonging. It is one mas- sive, primordial cry for love that resounds over all con- tinents, across all oceans. The emptiness you feel is the catalyst, the wake-up call, the trigger that allows the need for belonging to become the yearning for con- nection, authenticity, and oneness. That process begins when you start to become more conscious of the illu- sion that is the created self and recognize that truth lives in the Essential Self.
