Today my guest is graphic designer Malcom Garrett. For over forty years Malcom has been at the forefront of graphic design and has created iconic images for musicians and bands around the world. From the Rio album by Duran Duran to becoming a founder member of the 5D World Builders at 5D Institute at USC in California, Malcolm is noted for his collaborative approach to design and education and is an ambassador for the Manchester School of Art, and co-curator of the annual Design Manchester festival. When I was a teenager, Malcolm's work was a guide to me and allowed me to appreciate the importance of graphic design and how it is an integral part of making sound visible. I had no idea how our conversation was going to go, but from the very first minute I knew we were going to have a great chat. Malcolm is engaging, humble, and funny and it's an extended episode, so I hope you are sitting comfortably and happy to stay with us. It's been two years and nearly a hundred episodes since we launched The Creative Boom Podcast. With 2023 fast approaching, we thought a Christmas Special might be in order. One that celebrates how far we've come and pays tribute to the people who helped us get here but also allows us to look ahead and consider what's next. What better way to do so than return to our very first guest? And that's Malcolm Garrett. The esteemed graphic designer and creative director also happens to be one of the co-founders of Design Manchester, an annual festival in our home city and one that holds a special place on the international design calendar. It's actually where we headed last month to meet Malcolm but also catch up with other former guests of our show plus meet some new names. It seemed particularly fitting to make our Christmas Special during Design Manchester, as this year's theme is about Legacy – something that honours the late great Professor David Crow of the Manchester School of Art, who was one of the champions and supporters of the festival. Held in the Benzie Building of the esteemed art school, the event meant that everyone was reflecting on the legacy of Design Manchester as well as their own creative journeys, and how that legacy plays into the future. It was an honour to capture some of that reflection for Creative Boom – much of which we'll share now. And to just add a little fun, we asked everyone for their own Christmas memories – a time of year that means something different from one person to the next. But whether good or bad, it was agreed that the festive season brings people together. And I also asked about new year resolutions and how they feel about 2023. We kicked things off with Malcolm but then also chatted with former Creative Review editor Patrick Burgoyne, creative director and stylist Harris Elliott, graphic designer and artist Ian Swift aka Swifty, graphic artist Anthony Burrill, designer and artist Sarah Boris, artist and illustrator Stanley Chow, designer and digital whizz Zoë Hitchen, material and performance artist and artistic director Naitiemu Nyanjom, designer and illustrator Jane Bowyer, designer Ian Anderson of The Designers Republic, and Sir Misha Black Awards Chairman and Arts University Bournemouth Honorary Fellow, Mary V Mullin. That's it for Season Five of The Creative Boom Podcast. We're going to take a short break, but we will be back in 2023 with lots of new guests, covering many different themes – topics important to you as a creative professional. Until then, from myself and everyone at Creative Boom, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous and peaceful New Year.

My guest in this episode is Malcolm Garrett MBE who rather modestly describes himself as ‘a UK-based graphic designer working across a variety of disciplines and media.'Malcolm has a global reputation for his influence on graphic design and popular culture, both through his landmark designs for clients including Buzzcocks, Duran Duran, Boy George, Simple Minds and Peter Gabriel, and through his pioneering role in championing interaction and digital communications since the early 1990s, with an approach he refers to as ‘connected communications'. He starts this episode by saying ‘I love music and talking about music' and given his deep involvement with the industry, and some of its biggest bands, over 40+ years, then he has a host of stories to tell. For that reason, this is a two-part episode as there was just too many great stories, observations and connections to squeeze into one. Given Malcolm's creative background it's no surprise that he also tweaked with the format. His choices are from his own decades (1-10, Teens, Twenties) rather than the 60's, 70's, 80's etc. and all are female artists or bands with female vocalists. In this Part 1 we go from Malcolm's birth in Northwich in 1956, the massive influence of Liverpool in the 60's, his first record at the age of 8 (Can't Buy Me Love) , education in Manchester, the impact of mind altering drugs, the life changing ‘collision point ‘ that was Punk  and working with bands such as Buzzcocks, Magazine, Duran Duran, Simple Minds and Culture Club. Enjoy

His first commission as a designer was for Iggy Pop's Soldier album, and he has since become one of Hollywood's leading production designers, creating video designs for many famous 80's artists including Madonna, Michael Jackson, ZZ Top, Sade, Depeche Mode and Queen. This led to creating worlds for major Hollywood films - Minority Report, Fight Club, The Terminal, Corpse Bride and Man Of Steel, amongst many others. He now specialises in ‘world building' – designing complex digital worlds as a narrative tool when creating storylines for major movie makers. This edition of our Creative Lives podcast features an edit of a conversation recorded live between graphic designer Malcolm Garrett and Will Hudson. The discussion was part of an event that took place at G . F Smith’s Showspace in London, to coincide with Malcolm’s exhibition Orgasm Addict Reframed. Raised in Cheshire, Malcolm grew up alongside fellow designers Peter Saville and Keith Breeden, who all simultaneously discovered graphic design as a career path during their school days. Studying in Manchester, Malcolm was still at college when he embarked on his love for punk culture and music. Becoming embedded the UK’s early punk scene, it was during his second year of college, in 1977, that he created a record sleeve for the Buzzcocks, serving to kick-start his career in design. His work for music continued, and later became his passport to London from Manchester, once he’d graduated. He speaks about how opportunities arose through relentless hard work and curiosity, and why he thinks you have make your own luck. ... Via Malcolm’s first choice of music, early German experimental electronic music, we stumble upon a fascination for all things German. Malcolm feels a little disappointed with current bands, but he does admire Rammstein and Kraftwerk. He explains how this German fascination influences his design work and way of thinking. As he embraced digital technologies early on, going hand in hand with his interest in mass communication, he saw it rather as an opportunity to explore new disciplines and ways of thinking. And things will keep on changing dramatically, also the role of the designer. New media have been democratised. Malcolm doesn’t care about the technology, he is much more interested in how people communicate.
