The album received mixed reviews. Retrospectively, however, it is often regarded as a classic of the era and a key influence on the C86 generation. The group's second album 'Rip It Up', issued in November 1982 featured the single of the same name, which reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart in February 1983. Referencing both Chic and the Buzzcocks, the record galvanised Orange Juice's reputation as one of the brightest bands in the 'new pop' scene. In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.I do hope you enjoy this episode.Mathew Woodallhttps://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the rock classic (Don't Fear) The Reaper by Blue Öyster Cult (as well as some other stuff) in just under thirty minutes. The song, written and sung by lead guitarist Donald 'Buck Dharma' Roeser is taken from the 1976 album Agents of Fortune and explores the theme of eternal love and the inevitability of death. The band name Blue Öyster Cult features an umlaut. The 'metal umlaut' (also known as röck döts) has also been used in the names of several rock or heavy metal bands such as Queensrÿche, Motörhead, the Accüsed, Mötley Crüe, Spın̈al Tap and Green Jellÿ.The song has been featured extensively in film, TV and media: Stephen King named the song as one of the inspirations for his novel The Stand (the lyrics are quoted at the beginning of the novel). The song also appears as the opening theme for the 1994 TV serial based on the novel. The song can be heard playing in a car in the 1978 film Halloween and was used again in the 2022 sequel Halloween Ends, during the ending credits. It can be heard playing on a van radio during the 2022 horror film X and is played during the end credits of The Simpsons episode 'The Parent Rap'. The song has been featured in two series on Netflix: '1899' and 'Orange Is the New Black' and was even the subject of a Saturday Night Live comedy sketch in 2000.In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Mathew Woodallhttps://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. It has since sold over 1.5 million in the UK. The album received widespread praise from critics and launched Collins' solo career whose commercial success would ultimately outstrip that of Genesis. Its lead single 'In the Air Tonight', released in January 1981, reached No. 2 on the UK singles chart and became known for its distinct drum arrangement.During a break in activity from Genesis Collins set up a Sequential Prophet-5 synthesiser, piano, Roland CR-78 drum machine, and an 8-track tape machine in his bedroom, and recorded a collection of demos with backing tracks, pencilling early lyrics. He was not concerned with the quality of the recordings as what may have lacked in the recordings would have been salvaged with the emotion in the songs. There were numerous times where he stopped recording earlier than planned as the ideas were not working in the studio, leaving him to resume the following day. Collins based the majority of Face Value (and many subsequent tracks) on the divorce he had endured, and used his solo career as an outlet for his feelings. In January 2016, Face Value was reissued with bonus tracks and new photography in the style of the original but featuring the face of a now sixty-five year old Collins. In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall

It also includes 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door', which became a trans-Atlantic Top 20 hit. The song was also covered by Eric Clapton and Guns N' Roses. After Peckinpah completed his own cut of the movie, MGM re-cut the film without his input, removing several significant scenes and re-shuffling most of Dylan's music in the process. Peckinpah's film was released to mixed reviews. Years later, critical re-evaluation of Peckinpah's film would lead many to regard it as one of his major works, a revisionist view aided by the restoration of Peckinpah's original cut in 1984.As with Peckinpah's movie upon release, Dylan's album was received unfavourably by most at the time. This meant that Queen saw almost none of the money they earned. Brian May was living in a bedsit, while Freddie Mercury lived in a flat with rising damp. The matter eventually came to a head when the recently married John Deacon was denied a cash advance of £4,000 by the band's manager for a deposit on a house. The group's increasing frustration led to Mercury writing the song Death on Two Legs, which would serve as the opening track to A Night at the Opera. Upon release, A Night at the Opera became Queen's first number-one album in the UK and produced the band's most successful single, Bohemian Rhapsody. The song has since become popular worldwide. In 2011, a digitally remastered version of the album was released.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall

In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Bowie's eleventh album is an art/experimental record influenced by German bands such as Tangerine Dream, Neu!, Harmonia and Kraftwerk, Low features Bowie's first explorations in electronic and ambient styles. Side one consists primarily of short, direct avant-pop song-fragments, with mostly downbeat lyrics and side two comprises longer, mostly instrumental tracks, conveying musical observations of Berlin. Producer Tony Visconti created the distinctive drum sound using an Eventide H910 Harmonizer, a pitch-shifting device.Bowie's school friend, George Underwood designed the album cover. As with the artwork for Station to Station, it features a re-worked still from The Man Who Fell to Earth. The album cover has been parodied on many occasions, including the sleeve of Nick Lowe's 1977 album ‘Bowi' as well as in posters and prints featuring Kylo Ren from Star Wars and Loki from Marvel.  Low was released on compact disc for the first time in the mid-1980s. A 1991 Rykodisc CD release by contained three bonus tracks, including a remix of Sound and Vision and the outtakes Some Are and All Saints. EMI then released the 1991 edition in the UK on CD, Cassette and LP. In 2017, the album was remastered for Parlophone's A New Career in a New Town (1977–1982) box set, released in CD, vinyl and digital formats. The set includes Bowie's 'Berlin Trilogy', over eleven compact discs or thirteen LPs - the box attracted criticism by fans and music reviewers. This is Episode 24 of Season 3 (and one of over 100 other episodes). 122. How Bitcoin Mining Can Help Power Companies Optimize Generation Assets

The POWER Podcast

Bitcoin mining is the process used to generate new coins and verify new transactions. The process involves vast, decentralized networks of computers around the world that verify and secure blockchains, the virtual ledgers that document cryptocurrency transactions. In return for contributing their computing power, miners are rewarded with new coins. The process ultimately requires a lot of energy to perform, which is where power companies come in. “Bitcoin mining can help the energy sector,” Andrew Webber, founder and CEO of Digital Power Optimization (DPO), said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. “Instead of just selling power to third-party Bitcoin miners, we suggest, that, in many circumstances, energy companies themselves are actually far better positioned to build their own Bitcoin mines and undertake this strategy and this activity for their own purposes in a vertically integrated way, where again, the energy company owns the Bitcoin mine. And by operating a Bitcoin mine, in conjunction with an energy asset, in an intelligent and thoughtful way, you can really optimize your generation assets in a way that you couldn't really have done without a tool like Bitcoin mining to help you.” Webber said the idea came to him while reading a story in the newspaper. “I was reading [a Los Angeles Times] article about the state of California paying the state of Arizona $20 per megawatt-hour to get rid of all of its power. And I said, ‘What is going on? That seems absolutely crazy to me. I'll take all of it. You know? I'll set up a Bitcoin mine there, and just, any power you don't want, just send it to me, I'll take it for free,' ” he said. Webber explained how Bitcoin mining can help power companies alleviate issues. “This is a mechanism that can go almost anywhere and soak up this excess available power where it's produced, and then apply that value elsewhere across the globe in a way that actually solves these problems,” said Webber. “So, it's quite an interesting tool for the energy sector once they get their heads around how this will help.” Bitcoin mining provides flexibility, too. If power is needed suddenly for customers, the power company can respond by simply shutting down the mining operation. “You can just turn it off, and so, it makes a really good tool to respond to sharp jumps in demand or transmission difficulties,” Webber said. “It's sort of energy management infrastructure. And when you start thinking about an energy company building these things, it's not really Bitcoin mining, you're managing your energy assets in a different way, using a different system.” Setting up a Bitcoin mining operation is fairly simple. Webber said a 1-MW system fits in what looks like a standard shipping container—essentially, a 40-foot by 8-1/2-foot big metal box. Inside are racks, wiring, all the networking equipment, a filtration system, cooling fans, and 300 to 325 very specialized computers. The container is connected to a transformer supplied by 240-V or 277-V power, and mining can begin on whatever schedule works best for the power company including 24/7/365. In the end, however, Bitcoin mining is just one tool in a power management toolbox. It can be used in combination with other solutions, including battery storage and green hydrogen production. “All of these are things that need to be incorporated and thought about, not individually, but frankly, in concert with one another,” said Webber. “Right now, I think the energy sector has close to zero understanding that this is available to them, and that's what we're hoping to change. And I think it'll be probably commonplace over the next decade or two.”
