The ALL NEW Big Wakeup Call with Ryan Gatenby

Send us a textRenowned rock and roll photographer Mick Rock, who has taken iconic photographs of David Bowie, Queen, Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop, Ramones, and especially Lou Reed, called in to discuss a limited-edition book of pictures and stories, Transformer, out now to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the LP that, with the magic help of David Bowie and Mick Ronson, launched Lou Reed into the hero status we know today. We only had 10 minutes for the interview, but I could listen to Mick tell Reed and Bowie stories all day. Mick sadly passed away in 2021 at age 72.

Barnaby Clay joins host Jessica Kantor this week on Raising Cinephiles. Barnaby shares his introduction to horror films and how that's shaped his filmmaking. Barnaby discusses his new film, The Seeding, and how a TV show from his early childhood unconsciously inspired ideas in the film. The Seeding will be in select theaters and on digital January 26th. And finally, they discuss the challenge of introducing our children to cinema with all the competing content.  About Barnaby Clay: Prior to The Seeding, Barnaby directed the documentary SHOT! The Psycho-Spiritual Mantra of Rock which chronicles the story of legendary rock photographer Mick Rock. His award-winning short films include Carousel, starring Chloe Sevigny, and Sickdog, starring Tunde Adebimpe and Natasha Lyonne. While his new movie has its feet firmly planted in the horror/thriller genre, Barnaby's background is rooted in the music and art space, having directed numerous music videos for bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs and TV On The Radio and creating unique art installations like Live On MarsRevisited, a reimagining of the Mick Rock directed video for David Bowie's "Life On Mars". He also regularly collaborates with Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O (who he's also married to), including the immersive installation An Encounter With Lux Prima, which was done in collaboration with Danger Mouse.  New Episodes Every Wednesday!EPISODE CREDITS:Host, Producer, Editor: Jessica KantorBooker: Noelia MurphyBe sure to follow and tag Raising Cinephiles on Instagram

In this mini DFCAC episode, I dive into the lore and people behind Lou Reed's second solo studio album, Transformer. The photography of Mick Rock and Karl Stoecker, graphic designer and model Ernie Thormahlen, glam and drag: the people who inspired Lou's lyrics, reasoning behind the font choice Electus as: ‘Transformer' – high voltage – the electrical connotation of a transformer, and also the blurred lines concerning Lou's career and even his sexuality….and as usual, I explore connections to so many other great covers.I could have gone on for hours about each one of those subjects so consider this episode a loving introduction to this cover and its many fascinating components. Check out the youtube for companion visuals or listen wherever you get podcasts. On this edition of the Richard Crouse Show we meet Emm Gryner. She is a Canadian musician and vocal coach. David Bowie named Emm as one of his two favourite Canadian acts. U2 frontman Bono named her song “Almighty Love” as one of six songs that he wished he had written. Gryner toured in David Bowie's band, singing and playing keyboards, and appears on the recordings Bowie at the Beeb and Glastonbury 2000. Emm helped make the first music video in outer space with Chris Hadfield and is also the author of a book called “The Healing Power of Singing: Raise Your Voice, Change Your Life: What Touring With David Bowie, Single Parenting And Ditching The Music Business Taught Me In 25 Easy Steps.” Her new album is “Business & Pleasure” is a celebration of the Detroit radio scene and the music that shaped her childhood. From Motown, jazz and pop, to Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac and the Doobies, Business & Pleasure is infused with the sunshine soul and stellar playing of the late 70s and early 80s. Then, Gord Sinclair stops by. Best known as the bass player and one of the songwriters in The Tragically Hip, he is now a “reluctant solo artist” with a new album called In Continental Drift, available now wherever you buy fine music. Finally, we go into the vault to revisit my interview with the late, great rock photographer Mick Rock. He is often referred to as ‘The Man Who Shot the Seventies', for his iconic images of Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Queen, The Ramones, Blondie, Rocky Horror Picture Show, etc. London born, he has resided in New York for over 35 years. He has shot over 100 album covers. Rock was instrumental in creating many key rock ‘n' roll images, such as album covers for Syd Barrett's Madcap Laughs, Lou Reed's Transformer and Coney Island Baby, Iggy and The Stooges' Raw Power, Queen's Queen II (recreated for their classic music video ‘Bohemian Rhapsody') and Sheer Heart Attack, The Ramones End of the Century and Joan Jett's I Love Rock ‘n' Roll, among many others. He was the chief photographer on the films The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Shortbus. He recently shot special stills for the new TV version of Rocky Horror, featuring the transgender actress Laverne Cox as Frank n Furter. He also produced and directed the seminal music videos for Bowie: ‘John, I'm Only Dancing', ‘Jean Genie', ‘Space Oddity', and ‘Life On Mars'.

The B&H Photography Podcast team sends a huge end-of-the-year thank you to our listeners around the world and to the many guests who joined us for our weekly conversations. There's little need to overstate the difficulties of the past year, but we're all still here, still taking pictures, and we're still making this podcast week in, week out. It truly has been a gratifying and unflappable pleasure to produce this show and hopefully it continues to provide some insight, some inspiration, and a few good stories.   Despite the adjustments of remote recording, or perhaps because of them, we expanded our circle of photography to include conversations on photomicrography, on the fine art nude, on skate photography, and photo “how-to” books. We spoke with artists and economists about NFTs, discussed protest photography and issues of community and migration. We had episodes about food and wedding photography, bird photography, the freelance business, and, as always, we did our gear episodes, including the seventh annual Cameras of the Year episode. I encourage you to take a look back at the wide range of subjects we discussed this year and let us know your favorite episodes, as well topics you'd like us to take on in the new year.   Finally, and although this episode is not from 2021, we end this year with an encore presentation of our conversation with rock-n-roll photographer Mick Rock. Sadly, we lost Mick in November, but we're pleased to present this chat, which was recorded at his home, in Staten Island, and is certainly one of our all-time favorite episodes.  Thank you, Mick, and thank you again to our listeners. Happy New Year. Photograph Courtesy of the Collection of Bill Shapiro

Davitt also weighs in with thoughts on Chic, Prince, David Bowie's Young Americans, the late Mick Rock and a newly-added audio interview with Bootsy Collins, conducted in June 1978 by Davitt's sometime Black Music colleague Cliff White. Davitt proves to be a witty and erudite guest, as comfortable holding forth on Robert Musil as on Cloud One's 'Atmosphere Strut' — and with fascinating recall, to boot. Among the new library articles added by the RBP team, Mark & Jasper focus on pieces about the Clash, Vivian Stanshall, Cecil Taylor, Randy Newman, Amy Winehouse and — bringing the episode neatly full circle — disco "mix master" Tom Moulton. Many thanks to special guest Davitt Sigerson, whose remastered demos are coming soon to a streaming service near you. Pieces discussed: Davitt on Disco, Tom Moulton, Chic, Prince, Barney meets Davitt, Bootsy Collins audio, Young Americans, David Bowie, Mick Rock, Elton John, Cecil Taylor, The Clash + Johnny Thunders, Rough Trade and Factory, Randy Newman, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Otis Redding, Noel Redding, Viv Stanshall, Terry Southern, Amy Winehouse, Cameron Carpenter and Tom Moulton.

Cody went to high school with The Strokes. You can say he was at the right place at the right time. Well, that's probably true but if you don't have the talent, you won't get much of it. And The Strokes were fortunate enough to get that one friend who could document their teenage years and their rise to stardom. Cody learned his craft from his parents. His mom was a photographer and she got her share of rock royalty snapping too. She used to work with iconic New York legends like Lou Reed or Johnny Thunders. Young Cody was already well versed in the art of taking pictures when he got to befriend the boys who were gonna form the band that took the new millennium by storm. He was there when they played their first shows and he witnessed how quickly they became rockstars. Their career skyrocketed and so Cody's one. One day, he's at School talking to Nick Valensi, and the next thing you know he's working with THE legendary music photographer Mick Rock, shooting Iggy Pop. Cody has been working now for 20 + years and he tells us how he's approaching his art, with a lot of passion and tons of humility. If your friends are forming a band and you just found your parents' old camera, well you know what to do... Together, we're starting a conversation about saving Rock N' Roll in the City of Angels. Casually talking from the Sunset Strip, we are launching a movement with our collective called Team Nowhere and we are calling artists & fans to unite. If you are in a band, or if you're a photographer, a developer, a hairstylist, whatever your craft... In other words, if you really want to help to put Rock music back on the map for the ten upcoming years... well let's build a community together, and let's plan concrete actions to make a positive shift in our industry. Rock isn't dead, the Sunset strip isn't dead. DJ, serial band member (from the Angry Angles to Roya and many many more), stylist and quintessential New York transplant Alix Brown invites me into her NYC home for a conversation about the quintessential New York album (recorded in London) - Lou Reed's 1972 'Transformer'. We talk about how Reed working with producer David Bowie was the culmination of a transatlantic tennis match the Velvet Underground had started in the 60s, why Alix avoided meeting Lou Reed in person, whether there's any of Lou Reed's New York left today, Alix's abandoned VU cover project and working with Mick Rock (who shot the Transformer album cover) soon after Reed's death. My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music. Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist and photographer from Sydney, Australia. He directed the music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts and feature film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins, and writes for Capital News magazine.
