Joe Coleman, the legendary artist whose work digs into the darkest corners of the human psyche, joins us in the Crypt to discuss everything from painting serial killers like Carl Panzram, Albert Fish, and Ed Gein, to sharing the secrets of his controversial art. Join us as we delve into the contradictory beauty of the grotesque and the divine. Joe takes us inside his Odditorium, a personal collection as eerie as his paintings, where he houses macabre artifacts like a painting by John Wayne Gacy, the actual letter Albert Fish sent to Grace Budd's mother, a lock of Charles Manson's hair, and a Christmas card from Ed Gein. These relics serve as a tangible connection, DNA, to the energy that Joe channels into his art. We explore the paradoxes of life and death that permeate Joe's art, discuss his fascination with the redacted stories of the Bible, the corruption of the soul and flesh, and dive into his experiences selling art to icons like HR Giger, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Iggy Pop. –

For much of August, we will be taking a break to get our proverbial batteries recharged - we'll be back to releasing new episodes before the end of the month. Forty-five years ago, one of The Greatest and Most Influential Science Fiction and Horror films was first released. And now to celebrate the release of the latest entry in the long-running Alien saga - Alien: Romulus - here is a newly remastered review of the original with a few extra features. This was only the second feature to be directed by Sir Ridley Scott near the beginning of what would eventually become an illustrious career including Gladiator, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, and The Martian. The story follows the crew of the Nostromo, a mining ship in outer space in the future which is called to answer a distress call on a nearby planet (LV-426) and once on that planet, they of course get more than they bargained for….eventually meeting the eponymous Alien. :o It stars Tom Skerritt as Dallas, the Captain of this crew along with Sigourney Weaver in her first major role and the one which made her a star…..as Lieutenant Ellen Ripley. Alien 1979 is a beautiful combination of sci-fi and horror which has rarely been replicated since. With Ridley Scott's direction, HR Giger's unique visual design, unsettling special effects, tight script and a unique exploration of both alien life and artificial intelligence it's no wonder it went to spawn multiple sequels, prequels and spin offs. Probably too many really. Join us as we celebrate Halloween with a review of a little known Golden Harvest cult horror film: The Seventh Curse (1986). Loosely based on the popular Dr. Yuen series of Chinese novels about a globe trotting wealthy doctor, versed in the martial arts, and his confrontations with the supernatural, this highly entertaining adventure film from director Lam Ngai Kai (best known for the infamous Story of Ricky) features a talented cast of Hong Kong stars such as Chin-Sui Ho, Chow Yun-Fat, and Maggie Cheung; however, the real star of the show is arguably the picture's wild, thrill a minute, never ending spectacle, in which truly anything goes -- over the top martial arts and exciting gun play, anxiety inducing stunt work and cool creature effects, and a vast assortment of pulp adventure and horror tropes, from exotic locales, alluring damsels, trashy nudity, and insensitive stereotypes, to deadly blood cults, ancient curses, child sacrifices, and HR Giger inspired monsters -- anything goes so long as it entertains! In space, no one can hear you scream. This movie. THIS. MOVIE. It's one of those unicorns--it could have been so bad, so cheesy, so forgettable. And yet, through that incredible collision of luck and execution, we got a masterpiece. HR Giger's creature design is still the scariest monster ever created, almost 50 years later. Dan O'Bannon's script is still so tight, so perfectly constructed, we still make this movie to this day. And Ridley Scott's direction is still flawless. It's STILL terrifying, all these years later, which is kind of wild. We discuss it all, this week on Spooky Season!

Visual artist turned music video director, Zev Deans, has been responsible for some of the most iconic visuals in heavy music since 2010, including work with Portal and Behemoth, as well as mainstream artists like St. Vincent. He has also done film restoration work with the HR Giger estate, and fabrication work for Matthew Barney. Zev is a deeply respected and beloved fixture in my corner of culture. Zev and I talk about gentlemen duels, Polish catacombs, deepfakes, the role of AI in his recent work, the legacy of Kenneth Anger, and some upcoming projects that he's a bit skittish about detailing.

BioMech Pioneer Marcus Lenhard Discusses Decorating the Human Form in Tattooing SUMMARY Aaron Della Vedova interviews tattoo artist Marcus Lenhard on his show, Chats and Tatts. Marcus is a tattoo artist from Germany who specializes in BioMech, a type of art that was popularized by HR Geiger and Aaron Kane. Aaron and Marcus discuss the importance of pushing oneself and never getting too comfortable. Aaron also talks about his recent trip to Switzerland where he visited Guer Castle where HR Giger's Restaurant, Bar Museum is located. It is a seed for the BioMech movement, which is a fusion of nature and animation in concept art and tattooing. The movement is inspired by how nature solves problems and is still alive in concept art and tattooing. Guy Atchison and Aaron Kane were two of the most prolific people in bringing BioMech to the tattoo industry. Guy Atchison's craftsmanship of machines has kept BioMech cool and how the impact of their work on the tattoo community has been massive, changing the way people do tattoos from pictures to decorating the body with shapes that move with the human form. They would emerge from these little bioskeletons, and then the real insect would emerge. And I remember picking up those little things and talk about HR geiger. It looks like where geiger might have got the inspiration. I like to get tattoos that remind me of my childhood. And I had a really good childhood growing up in Iowa. Just pure nature. But in Iowa, every so many years, these huge swarms of cicadas would infiltrate our entire neighborhood and make this incredible sound, just, wow. Your authentic way you approach tattooing, I really appreciate that. Your process, how you interact with your clients, how you like to very carefully gauge where you gather your reference material to keep you more authentic and not just echoing the voices of other artists. I feel like you have to develop yourself as an artist, and you can become an amazing artist, but once you are an amazing artist, have you also done some personal development in the meantime? If you arrive at 40, 45 and you feel like, oh, I feel like I'm still 20 because I haven't really done anything but just, like, tattooing and art and tattooing and art and tattooing and art, then at some point you're like, maybe there's space for some other stuff here that makes me grow as a person. I still draw, I still paint, but not nearly at this pace I used to, only because I'm striking a balance, like, gosh, can I do something else today besides art? Can I go ride? I like the mountain bike, too, and anything. Just go for a walk.
Do you know that moment when everything that could go wrong does go wrong? Well, that encapsulates this episode of Kill By Kill as we talk to Gavin and Louie of The Mixed Reviews podcast about 1992's ALIEN3. First, Gena's audio is scuttled by a loose face-hugger, and then the catastrophes extend to the insanely complicated production history of the film; we explore the dueling themes of a film made out of two different scripts; and finally, there's a puppy in the recording studio… and then a xenomorph bursts out of him!! All this, plus a very chomp-heavy edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure, and we explain what my 12-year-old son has in common with galactic evil corporation, Wayland-Yutani! It's the episode of Kill By Kill where all your worst fears have come true!! Never fear - new episodes of Kill By Kill are made available every other Friday! Along for this terrifying ride through deep space is Patrick's son, Oliver for his first-time watch. So like any caring parent, Patrick has shoved a mic in front of his child's face to ask him what he thinks about xenomorph biology, giving alcohol to your small children, cute dogs in costumes, bad milk robots, how cool “Arnold Shnottsinator” is, and the charming, bone-filled backstory of H.R. Giger!! It's entertaining AND educational!! This episode of the Kill By Kill podcast is brought to you in part by PEARL!
