On this podcast, he discusses how athletes and coaches can use the unprecedented shutdown on collective training to reset and reeducate and actually come back a better player. But he warns against the temptation to binge, instead focus on training smart. Throughout the show, Dr Ed lists a range of resources that athletes and coaches and parents can turn to for training ideas for athletes at all levels — from inter-county to the club under 6s. Mark O’Sullivan is a UEFA A licensed coach and is head of youth development for 8-12 at AIK in Stockholm, Sweden and is part of their Research and Development department. Mark is currently doing PhD Research Sheffield Hallam University, UK, which centers around designing learning environments in youth football. Mark has also worked as a consultant for the Canadian FA (2017) helping them to develop their new coach education program. He regularly holds lectures, talks and practical sessions around the world. Not just confined to soccer Mark has collaborated with coaches in Basketball, handball, floorball, figure skating and ice hockey. If you want to read Mark’s own personal insights then just go to his Blog: https://footblogball.wordpress.com Overview: 107:23 Min episode 3:20 Introduction 5:38 Referring to a previous question to Richard Bailey, if there is a conflict between how children learn and how modern youth sports elite programs are carried out that is causing an imbalance? 19:20 How can we preserve unique playing styles emerging from environments outside sport if using a linear model? Mark talks about an interview Pavel Datsyuk, the Russian NHL player called the “Magic Man” 25:08 A key factor in the research at AIK, is looking how they create motivational climates when it is the children’s inner motivational factors as a key for participation, performance and personal development over time. 31:55 AIK’s 3 principles 1. Wellbeing of children 2. Following United Nations & rights for children and Gov documents about children in sport & 3. Having more players, play U16, U17, U19 and into their senior team. They also have a clear pedagogical model and principals within the club. 41:12 SDT and how it relates to development 45:40 Programs are becoming based on economic models rather than learning models, which shifts the focus more towards the economics 52:50 Fascinating that coaches from different sports from all around the world say NO to the following question “If we restart youth sports from zero and rebuild it based on children’s physical and emotional needs, would it look like it does today?” 59:55 Afordances landscape of training: isolated individual skills on one end and free play on the other. The optimum opportunity of interactions of which the training is design is likely somewhere in between. The question to ask ourselves as coaches; Does the design invite, permit or inhibit young players to interact and learn?

Mark chats about designing learning spaces from an ecological dynamics perspective, where tasks are representative of the game, where perception and action is coupled, using repetition without repetition and promoting an external focus of attention. Mark discusses designing sessions where players search discover and exploit gaps and space using football interactions. Sessions that move away from theme based sessions and give more autonomy to the decision making of young players. Mark also outlines the importance of the relationship between player and the learning and the interactions within the learning space.

Last week actress Harriet Thorpe promised to be on Ian’s show every week until he came and see her new show Ruthless and, sticking to her word, she rang in to ask why he hadn’t been yet. Ian also berated poor Connor Wallace again, even when he rang in to apologise. The first guest in the studio was comedian Jamali Maddix, fresh off a plane from New York, to talk about his new worldwide tour and about Viceland’s Hate Thy Neighbour. He was followed by Miles Chapman and Mark O’Sullivan, writers, creators and stars of Lee and Dean, a brand new comedy coming to Channel 4 on Good Friday.

Dennis Hortin is the academy manager at AIK, one of Sweden's oldest and most respective professional football clubs. Mark O'Sullivan is a friend of the podcast and needs no introduction except to say that he has now joined AIK and is working within their coaching set up. In this brilliant discussion we learn more about why AIK has taken the brave step to back out of the crazy situation that has been emerging where football clubs are trying to select players younger ad younger to be part of their talent academy programme. AIK has been inspired by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and has decided that the best way to help develop players and take a truly 'player centred' approach is to make sure that the kids have a great experience free from pressure until at least the age of 13. It is an inspired move and one that all talent developers should take note of. This is a watershed moment and an opportunity for others to follow in their footsteps and end the crazy commodification of children in sport!

In this episode, I talk with Mark O'Sullivan from the amazing blog https://footblogball.wordpress.com/ about talent ID in sport and the scary scenario where children as young as 4 are being invited to 'Talent ID' sessions. What can we do about it? What should we do about it? How can parents, coaches and administrators push back against this development and take back children's sport?
