Tosh Farrell, a UEFA 'A' licensed coach and member of the Professional Football Coaches Association is described by Craig Brown CBE the former mens national 1st team head coach of Scotland as arguably, to be one of the foremost exponents of youth coaching in the game. He is the former Head of International Football Development and Technical Coordinator at the English Premier Club Everton FC. Tosh has spent 13 years developing his Soccer Development Methodology at one of the leading youth academies in the world, helping develop numerous players who have gone on to represent Everton FC 1st team. These players include Wayne Rooney,Ross Barkley, Jack Rodwell, Callum McManaman. The EPL's youngest ever goal scorer, James Vaughan (age 16yrs 270 days) and the youngest player ever to represent Everton in the premier league Jose Baxter (age 16 yrs,191 days) “The key to success lies in Tosh's knowledge, experience and understanding of the right way to develop soccer excellence in young players. Like all coaches he likes to win but his focus is exclusively on the process of development – he knows if he gets this right the score will take care of itself.” - Bill Beswick M.Ed. There are two types of people in the world - managers, and leaders. Managers work hard to maintain the status quo that their jobs and reputations were built on. They seek comfort in the certainty of the way things have always been done. Leaders, on the other hand, seek change. They imagine a better world, and are driven to create it.My guest on today's show is, without doubt, a leader. His name is Dr James Vaughan and he is an UEFA A licensed football coach and coach developer. James' work, which challenges old ways of skill development, calls for cultural change on and off the football pitch. Practically speaking, Jame views football as an emergent feature of the sociocultural ecology, with sociocultural constraints influencing playing style and creative development. In this wide-ranging conversation, Jame shares his journey from getting cut at age 16 from a football centre of excellence in the UK, to moving with his family to the other side of the world, to earning a PhD in Sports Coaching from the University of Queensland, to now, living and coaching in Sweden. Our latest Bred a Blue podcast guest, Jake Bidwell, is still the youngest player to ever make a European appearance for Everton. David Moyes handed him a start against BATE Borisov in the UEFA Cup tie at Goodison Park in December 2009 when Bidwell was just 16-years-old and 271 days. Indeed, only Thierry Small, Jose Baxter and - by just 24 hours - James Vaughan have been younger when playing for the senior team in any competition. “I went in the day before the game expecting to train as normal and then got the shout that I was playing,” he told the Official Everton Podcast. “It was a bit of a whirlwind, but I remember going through set-pieces in training. “Leighton Baines and Tony Hibbert told me to just relax and enjoy my game. I was so young that I didn't really understand the magnitude of it and I just wanted to get out there and do the best I could.” LISTEN TO BRED A BLUE AND COLLECT EVERTON REWARDS POINTS In Bred a Blue Bidwell speaks about he started off at Everton as a goalkeeper, how he played against Danny Welbeck when he was still at school, and how he just wanted to go home to bed after his first senior team training session because he was so tired! After that European night, further senior run-outs proved elusive and, by his own admission, he was never really likely to oust Leighton Baines and so took the decision to go to Brentford on loan when he was 18. “It would have been difficult for anyone to get Bainesy out, let alone me,” said Bidwell. “I agreed to go to Brentford and then I asked ‘where is it' because I had no idea! I went for six months and ended up playing more than 200 games for them in five years. “There was no role for me at Everton but I had become an important player for Brentford and was playing week-in, week-out so I didn't want to go back to play reserve team football.” From Brentford, Bidwell moved to Queens Park Rangers, although despite racking up more than 100 appearances for them across three seasons he says ‘that one didn't work out as well.' His next port of call, Swansea City, was far more enjoyable. “I loved it there and can't speak highly enough of the place or the city. It's a one-club city and everyone wants the team to do well. We had two play-off campaigns but just couldn't get over the line.” Despite not turning 30 until March of this year, Jake Bidwell, currently in the Championship with Coventry City, is closing in on 500 career appearances. However, he still looks back on that one for Everton with a great deal of affection. “The upbringing I got alongside the likes of Phil Neville, Sylvain Distin, Leighton Baines has stood me in good stead throughout my career. I only played once but I know there are lots of Evertonians who would give their left arm to make an appearance for the team. “It's something I'll always be proud of. If I have a son who is good enough to play football I wouldn't want him to go anywhere other than Everton.”

James Vaughan on Il Cinema Ritrovato: Muratova, Mambéty, and More! Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw. I'm your host, Nicolas Rapold. Il Cinema Ritrovato is an incredible film festival of restorations, revivals, and retrospectives that takes place every year in Bologna, Italy. It's a source of discovery (and/or envy) for many film lovers, and so when I heard the filmmaker James Vaughan—director of Friends and Strangers, one of my favorite movies in recent years—was attending, I knew we had to talk. Vaughan was a guest on The Last Thing I Saw last summer to talk about some very fine silent films he had been watching. In Bologna, he was looking at movies for the Sydney-based film festival Cinema Reborn, and some of his favorites included work by Kira Muratova, Djibril Diop Mambéty, and Arby Ovanessian—plus the Weimar Cinema comedy The Cabinet of Dr. Larifari. Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. One of my favorite films this year hands-down is Friends and Strangers, directed by James Vaughan. It's about a timid twenty-something guy in Sydney, Australia, who goes on a camping trip with a woman his age. Skipping ahead a bit, he kind of goes nowhere fast and gets bogged down on a job with a wealthy loudmouth. The movie had its world premiere at the Rotterdam film festival, and during the festival's June anniversary celebration, I had the chance to talk with Vaughan. Vaughan chose silent cinema for our subject and sent a list of films that he had freshly encountered over the past year. We settled on a few: G.W. Pabst's Pandora's Box, Diary of a Lost Girl, and The Love of Jeanne Ney; and from F.W. Murnau his spectacular retelling of Faust. But we also ended up talking about Eisenstein's work, and got into how these movies have affected Vaughan's thinking as a filmmaker. Friends and Strangers will be released in the U.S. down the road by Grasshopper Films so look out for it. Hey, y'all. I am Shay. This is the on air indie show. Welcome & enjoy. Episode 56. First, music history for June 22nd. In 1971 Joni Mitchell released her fourth studio album Blue. Music critics now regarded the album as one of the greatest albums of all time. In July 2017, NPR chose Blue as the greatest album of all time made by a woman. Today we welcome autism expert Dr. Lynette Louise. We also know her as “The Brain Broad”. She is an artist, an author, an academic, a brainiac and a healer. A fascinating guest whose work helps you to look at yourself and your world with renewed possibilities and understanding. We showcase her music on today's show. Enjoy the show! tracks "Crazy to Sane" 11:06 "Unfinished" 221:57 "Biofeedback" 31:26 "Brainiac" 46:10 https://youtu.be/--EMsnVTNVM In this video Lynette is both the BRAINIAC and the MANIAC! She seeks to help herself by screaming at the part that loves to soak and sit in the pain and guilt. The MANIAC prefers to stay unhappy by staying focused on her shame and refusing to look at the parts of her life that make her feel in love with being alive. The BRAINIAC (or positive thinking part of herself) keeps trying to be heard. BRAINIAC is from the CD 'CRAZY to SANE' and is available on Amazon as well as CD baby. Enjoy this music video about being of two minds until you're not. https://youtu.be/qmYtJTqmSDc The Brain Broad, Lynette Louise explains, "In my life many romances came and went as people ran from my autistic children. My thanks to Annie Potts, Scott Lawrence, Shawn Reaves, Denise Crosby, Dar Shelton, Andy Allen, Ron Whitaker, James Vaughan, Jory Shelton, Tawd Dorenfeld for sharing your celebrity, your love and support! This song celebrates the fact that we're all beautiful and endlessly unfinished and if we look in our own backyard we just may find that we are already loved. Then we rewind out of our pain and rewrite the story we tell ourselves about the people in our world. "Unfinished" is a state of being." https://youtu.be/oY65LBqUNxc Years ago before I was The Brain Broad I was Lynette Louise looking for Johnny :) To accompany my first C.D. I made this claymation/live action music video. Even then I involved my children in my projects. I love family businesses. If you like the zaniness great. If not you may need your head checked https://youtu.be/wxX4q5pyobchttps://youtu.be/l0AbL_5UuQI Helping Children all over the world Lynette Louise aka The Brain Broad specializes in autism and other family or concurrent conditions. In Uganda it was Autism and Seizures. In America Autism complicated by PANS and suicidal tendencies. In Israel Autism and sensory integration, speech delay, and depression filtered through the family members. EVERY episode is full of fun and learning and amazing children. Mike King talks to James Vaughan about FRIENDS AND STRANGERS. A fresh and entrancing take on the timeless subject of young adulthood, Friends and Strangers introduces a clique of Australian twentysomethings who are looking for their direction, but keep getting distracted along the way. Ray and Alice are on an impromptu camping trip in the Australian countryside, ensconced in their tent but not really connecting with each other. Back home in Sydney, these rudderless millennials are on no more solid ground, particularly as wedding videographer James’s meeting with a wealthy client takes a series of increasingly surreal turns. Writer/director James Vaughan’s debut feature is brilliantly composed all around, from its crisp, lovely cinematography and precisely calibrated atmosphere to the striking paintings and vintage Jon Gibson music that serve as a counterpoint to its characters’ careful hesitancy. “What a saga!” one character exclaims towards the end of this beguiling series of casual detours and drifts, a quip that well sums up the film’s self-aware humor. “The funniest, best movie from Oz in several years. Movie audiences (whether they know it or not) seek fresh voices, attitudes. This is it, the real deal. Ten years from now, this’ll still be fresh” (Robert Koehler). “Masterful. There is great depth in these characters, and ultimately the paradoxical nature of their existence pays off superbly” (Flickering Myth). 2021 Rotterdam Film Festival. (MK)
This last year has been a drought for movie-lovers by most standards. But if you're looking for silver linings, you could do worse than noting that there's a fresh edition of the New Directors/New Films festival happening a mere four months after the 2020 edition. This year is extra special: it returns the festival to theaters alongside virtual screenings, and it also marks the 50th anniversary of New Directors/New Films. It's a nice reminder that despite all the doom-saying, cinema's future remains as vibrant as its past. To preview the lineup, FC editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute were joined by critics Vadim Rizov and Chloe Lizotte—both veterans of our 2020 New Directors talk— for a live taping of the podcast. The four discussed festival highlights including Amalia Ulman's El Planeta, James Vaughan's Friends and Strangers, Fern Silva's Rock Bottom Riser, Salomé Jashi's Taming the Garden, Mani Kaul's Duvidha, and more. Saran James-VaughanSaran is a Holistic Nutrition Practitioner and Herbalist whose primary focus is helping women support optimal hormone and reproductive health, reduce stress, and live according to their natural rhythms and cycles.Through diet, lifestyle changes and personal alchemy tools, Saran supports the journey of identifying the root cause of chronic illness, helping the body, mind and soul return to balance. She believes that discovering personal truth, based on your life story and unique composition is the gateway to unfolding the vision for your life.Key takeaways from the conversation:The simple practice of mindful eating can help us better listen to our bodies, to understand our gut health, which can then help us listen to our gut feelings/intuition.We can build a practice of investigating our bodies and how our menstrual cycle, food, stress, and external factors are impacting our hormones and health. And then pay closer attention to how our hormones throughout our cycles impact how we interact with external factors as well as our own thoughts. When we can align with the frequency of nature, we can tap into the energy of creation, which allows us to manifest the life we want.Intuition is a muscle we need to grow and strengthen. We can use our analytical mind to bring awareness and space so that we can listen for our intuition.Food offers us a sensory experience and can disrupt our bodies or help to heal it and connect us more deeply with our bodies and intuition. Appreciation and honouring our bodies and our ancestors will help our ability to hear the wisdom they have to offer. This week we're reflecting on the one-year anniversary of the pandemic by talking about the games that got us through it. Then, we do a good ol' AFQs (Ask Fahey Questions) segment, followed by an interview with James Vaughan, creator of Plague Inc.
At 16 years and 274 days James Vaughan smashed the record for the premier league's youngest ever goalscorer, a title he still proudly holds to this day, and 16 years and 13 clubs later he should have been continuing his goalscoring habit at Wembley this Sunday, against one of his former employers Sunderland in the 2021 Papa John's Trophy Final. However, a recurrence of a knee injury that has blighted his career sees him injured and unavailable for selection, but he still hopes to be fit enough to travel with his Tranmere team mates, for what promises to be a very special day out for Keith Hill's Skybet League 2 high flyers. Elsewhere, Mark Clemmit catches up with Coventry City boss Mark Robins, who's looking forward to the return of fans, a return to normality and a return to the Ricoh Stadium next season after their groundsharing sabbatical at St Andrews.
We're all going to Wembley (not). Sunderland are in the Pizza Cup trophy final this weekend, as we aim to add silverware to our trophy cabinet in the shape of the Papa John's Trophy. Tranmere, however, are looking to continue our Wembley heartbreak, and to discuss our game on Sunday is Matt from @ThisIsTranmere podcast. Enjoyed the episode? Follow us at @WhatTheFalkPod, or like and subscribe via your favourite podcast app. • James Vaughan is out - how big of a blow is that for Tranmere? • We discuss how we'll be watching, and what sort of things we'd be getting up to if we could go. • Should it be delayed till May, or does Matt think we should just play it now? • Cup final traditions and where is the perfect distance from Wembley to get the right level of drunk. & much, much more. #SAFC #TRFC #PapaJohnsTrophyFinal

In the second of our Bred A Blue series, Birmingham-born striker James Vaughan discusses joining Everton as a six-year-old and embarking on a journey that led to him becoming the Premier League's youngest ever goalscorer a decade later. Now 32, Vaughan is back on Merseyside and regularly scoring goals for League Two Tranmere Rovers. He explains the impact coming through Everton's ranks had on his career, relives the elation of scoring in the Blues' FA Cup semi-final penalty shootout victory over Manchester United in 2009, and speaks candidly about why he didn't amass more than his 60 appearances for the Club.
Jim Haynes, writer, Australian Historian & Chris Smith Show regular, joins Michael on the anniversary of Canberra’s discovery by Charles Throsby Smith, Joseph Wild and James Vaughan, 200 years ago. Following European settlement, the growth of the new colony of New South Wales led to an increasing demand for arable land. Governor Lachlan Macquarie supported expeditions to open up new lands to the south of the capital Sydney, including one to find an overland route to Jervis Bay, an area which would later be incorporated into the ACT as its only coastal possession. In 1818 Charles Throsby, Hamilton Hume, James Meehan and William Kearns set out to find the route, a task accomplished that same year by Throsby and Kearns. The 1820s saw further exploration in the Canberra area associated with the construction of a road from Sydney to the Goulburn plains, supervised by Throsby and his overseer, Joseph Wild. While working on the project, Throsby learned of a nearby lake and river from the local Aborigines, and he accordingly sent Wild to lead a small party to investigate the site. On 19 August 1820, Wild ventured off from his two companions, and later that day arrived at the north shore of what is now known as Lake George. In October 1820 Governor Macquarie visited the site, and while he was in attendance Throsby decided to push on to reach the river of which he had been informed. Accompanied by Wild and James Vaughan, he journeyed south in search of the Murrumbidgee. The search was unsuccessful, but they did discover the Yass River, and it is surmised that they would have set foot on part of the future ACT. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Trigger warning: This episode includes discussions of reproductive and sexual trauma, as well as conversations around slavery and racism. This week, we are joined by Saran James-Vaughan, who is a Holistic Nutritionist and Reproductive Wellness Facilitator. During this episode, the two of us had an in-depth conversation around reproductive and health and wellness, particularly related to the Black community. We discuss the stigma behind reproductive health and our tendency to ignore signs until they have become severe. We also talk about our tendency to mirror our ancestors when it comes to our attitude towards self-care, and how our generation may be perpetuating many cycles are no longer required and that no longer serve us any longer. Lastly, we speak about sexual health, its link to racism and slavery, and the conditions that need to be in place to repair one's relationship with their own body and to encourage safety when it comes to sexuality. It’s Wednesday the 1st April, in todays show we review Neil Critchleys first two games in charge with the nil-nil draw at Fleetwood and one-two home reverse to Tranmere. We also perform a “keep or dump” review of all the potentially outgoing players at the end of the season, debate and decide the two centre forward berths as we conculde the team for the worst ever eleven and we muse over what we’re all missing about not be able to go to ‘Pool matches cause of this bloody virus. Last match reviews Fleetwood 0 – Blackpool 0 Neil Critchley’s reign as Blackpool manager began with a goalless draw away to Fylde coast neighbours Fleetwood, whose unbeaten run extended to 11 games. Blackpool dominated the first period and Matty Virtue twice went close in the early stages, seeing an effort well saved by Alex Cairns and then driving a shot just off target. Fleetwood improved after the restart and Paddy Madden headed Lewie Coyle’s smart cross narrowly wide. Fans comments Tony Fretwell17 – Matty VirtueBut of a non event given the hype. Sat in the main stand with Cods I was taken at all the petty nasty comments about Blackpool. Bit embarrassing from them really. On the pitch was promising from us but ultimately no real threat on their goal. But defending seems to have definitely improvedBrian32 – Chris Maxwell.Lee McLeod42 – Taylor MooreA great taste of what’s to come, pressing, chasing down opposition and a general work hard philosophy. 2nd half ran out of steam but it will come. Draw fair result.Sam freedman17 – Matty VirtueReally impressed in the first half on how we controlled the game, virtue stepped up and took the lead in the middle And dictating play . we were toothless up top, delfonso is just NOT A striker. by half time fleetwood saw that we couldn’t score and came back in the second half and a draw was probably a fair result, on a side note happy to see turton left out we looked much better at the back with 3 centre backs.Mark MacKay42 – Taylor MooreAs a recent podcast listener, apologies, I made the point to Tim pre-match that I couldn’t believe neither Andy Welsh nor David Ferguson got mentioned in the worst XI Blackpool 1 – Tranmere 2 Ferrier headed neatly into the corner as he rose to meet Calum Woods’ cross on 37 mins. In added time, James Vaughan side-footed home from 15 yards after meeting Ferrier’s pass. Blackpool halved the deficit just before the hour mark when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall smashed home from 25 yards. Within a minute it was almost 2-2, but Davies palmed Ronan’s shot from even further out onto the post. Liam Feeney missed two good chances to equalise for Blackpool late on. Fans Comments Tony Fretwell35 – Keiran Dewsbury-HallI’ll be honest, I know there was lots of complaining we lost but the second half was as entertaining and exciting as any part of the season to date. Really bodes well for meLee McLeod35 – Keiran Dewsbury-HallFirst half we allowed ourselves to be bullied by their front two. 2nd half was probably the best half I’ve seen in some time. Our 2 young midfielders are running the show and the quality oozes from Ronan and KDH.Mark Mackay40 – Connor RonanI’m concerned that 4 of our starting XI are loans you’d have to assume will return to their parent clubs on season completion. Elicit debate… Keep or Dump We go through the list of players who are potenitally leaving at the end of the season due to their contracts or loan deals expiring, Worst ever XI As we close out this section, we finally decide on the worst eleven Blackpool XI as we pick the worst ever two strikers from our shortlist of ten. Born in 1955, James Vaughan grew up in the idyllic surroundings of a small town near Akron, Ohio. His father was a scientist and director of research for one of America’s largest corporations. His mother was an artist and a poet. Vaughan completed high school a year ahead of his classmates and in 1972 left for Chicago and college. He studied both photography and journalism and, while still a student, his freelance work appeared in many of the city’s major magazines and newspapers. After he earned his degree, Vaughan took a job as an assistant with a large commercial studio. Then in 1977, during a long and cold Chicago Winter, he converted an entire floor of an old factor into his first studio. Over the next twenty-five years, he worked at the forefront of Chicago’s advertising and fashion industry and was commissioned for a wide variety of advertising and editorial assignments. “My original training in photo-journalism served me well,” says Vaughan. “It brought a sense of realism and sincerity to my work. I have always thought of myself as a storyteller. That’s what the word ‘photography’ really means – ‘to write with light.’” “I can’t say I was much of a financial success,” laughs Vaughan. “Most of the money went to new ideas and experiments. We were all mad-scientists back then, pushing the envelope in search of the next break-through image.” With the arrival of the 21st Century, and its limitless digital technology, James Vaughan has been able to return to his small-town roots. Now back in Ohio, he has taught at nearby Kent State University and built a new state of the art studio. “This is the most important time for my work. Away from the demands and distraction of the big city I can be even more creative,” he says. “After all these decades, I finally have the skill and technology to catch-up to my imagination!” In this episode, Beth and James discuss: James’ background in photography and his youth during the space race. The power of aesthetics in the space program. Where James finds his inspiration as a space illustrator. The modern mythology that is the new space exploration. The role art has always played in new scientific endeavors, including space exploration. Key Takeaways: Illustrators, artists, and creative talents are needed in the space program. When we apply our imagination, we help to share and interpret ideas. You can do anything…if you love it, you will find a way. “Surprise! We live in space. Right now, all the time. The idea that we won’t go farther than our front yard is sort of silly. I know there will be ups and downs and trials and tribulations, but it’s inevitable that the human race will expand further and further out into the universe.” — James Vaughan Connect with James Vaughan: Website: JamesVaughanPhoto.com About Beth Mund: Beth’s love for space started as a Space Camp attendee at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where she would return years later as an instructor. In addition, Beth worked to support the International Space Station program as a communication specialist. In Chicago, Beth worked as a corporate communication advisor to Fortune 50 companies including Allstate and United Airlines. She’s worked as a college instructor, a political advisor, and public relations manager for her hometown city. We all want our players to be creative. We structure the way they train to promote creativity. We talk to them about embracing creativity. However, because we structure it, are we prohibiting the potential for creativity to arise? Is the macro-culture of youth sports holding back creativity?
