Paul Farmer is a charity leader who has spent his life campaigning, fundraising and changing the national conversation around some of the most challenging issues in our society. Currently at the helm of Age UK, he previously spent 16 years as the CEO of Mind, the UK's largest mental health charity. Paul was born in Oxford, the son of a former Benedictine monk and a former nun. He read history at St Peter's College, Oxford, where he met his future wife, Claire. After graduating, he found a role working for a heritage centre and fell in love with the charity sector, moving to the Samaritans. His experiences taking calls from those struggling with their mental health awakened a passion for working in the mental health sector. In 2006 he moved Mind, where he became CEO. He led a fifteen-year campaign that helped to change legislation, and the national conversation around mental health. For the past few years, he has campaigned for older people as Chief Executive at Age UK, and encouraged the public to prepare and plan for a happier, healthier later life. Paul lost his wife, Claire, to cancer in 2019. Listener 'Sarah' tells us about the burden and resentment she feels at caring for a parent who is in her 90s, when she is a pensioner too. This is the time she thought she would have for herself. Clare Jefferies, who co-runs care companies and has written the book: I'm Your Daughter, Not Your Carer, and Caroline Abrahams, charity director of Age UK, discuss the problem with Kylie Pentelow.Have you ever considered working in boat building? We were contacted by Women in Boat Building, a community of women working hands-on in the industry, who wanted to tell us about their experiences and raise the profile of a trade that's largely male-dominated. Abbey Molyneux, a traditional boat builder who runs her own boatyard in Norfolk and is a director of Women in Boat Building, and Vanessa Larmond, who's just starting out in the industry in Southwold, Suffolk, tell us what it is like.Do you ever use dialect when you speak? Do you think of yourself as having an accent? How do you feel about the way you sound? A listener in Yorkshire, Christina Longden, has got in touch with a request to hear from women like herself who are actively keeping regional dialect alive, an endeavour which she says has traditionally been the preserve of men. Christina would also like to discuss accent and dialect bias and why, she says, men have always been more permitted to speak in dialect than women. To discuss why what you say and how you say it still matters and how it's influenced by gender, presenter Chloe is joined from Yorkshire by Christina Longden, a council member of the Yorkshire Dialect Society; by Diana Rackham, chair of Friends of Norfolk Dialect; and by Rob Drummond, professor of sociolinguistics at Manchester Metropolitan University. In two weeks' time, thousands of young people will open their GCSE results - but what about those who don't get the grade 4 they need in maths and English? 41% of pupils in maths and 29% in English won't reach that benchmark, and 82% fail their resits, blocking their path to A levels, T Levels and BTECs. Listener Hannah Gee highlights a hidden alternative: Functional Skills, which have a 60–80% pass rate. Chloe Tilley talks to Hannah and her son Joe, and Claire Green from the Association of School and College leaders.Do men make more noise than women? One of our listeners thinks so and wrote: ‘It seems like a bit of frivolity, maybe, but it is blooming annoying, and I started to wonder if there is something psychological behind it: the noise men make when there is no need to make a noise at all. The coughing, sniffing, ‘ahhing' as they get up and down, the belching, farting etc. It seems to get worse as they get older; or is it that women become less tolerant? Women seem to be silent in a room, but their other half is constantly making some sort of noise.' Janet Street-Porter and Tim Dowling discuss.Presenter: Chloe Tilley Producer: Annette Wells

Age 52, Stacey Duguid is a columnist and former fashion editor, who once held positions at some of the world's top fashion brands; Prada, Harrods, Net-a-Porter and Paul Smith. However for the past 16 months Stacey has been unemployed and actively applying for jobs. She estimates she has sent over 150 applications out and received very few replies and not a single job interview. Stacey posted about this on her social media account and received a tsunami of responses from other women. With decades of experience and perspective under their belts, why are so many midlife women struggling to find employment? Send us Fan MailA recent Age UK study found that nearly a third of adults still feel affected by their school PE experiences… with many put off exercise for life. Not because they're lazy, but because of how it made them feel.Being picked last. Feeling judged. Not fitting in.And what's interesting is - those moments didn't stay in childhood. They shaped the story you might still be telling yourself now… “I'm not sporty”, “exercise isn't for me” or "I'm not good enough…"So today, we're getting into that - in a funny lighthearted way - as we share our own personal (traumatic!) experiences. We look at where these unhelpful beliefs really come from… and how to finally rewrite them in a way that actually works for you now - so you can live midlife healthy, happy and strong.Struggling with midlife lately? We offer 20 minute chats - for free - to unpick what's going on and help you get clarity on the next steps. To book, just drop us an email at team@themdlifementors.com Support the showPlease remember, if you find the show helpful or it makes you laugh, motivates and inspires you - please do like, share and rate us. What support can I access? And how do I find it?In this episode, we're breaking down the key grants, benefits, and support schemes available in the UK to people affected by stroke, including:Personal Independence Payment (PIP) – financial support for extra living costs if you have long-term health conditions or disabilities.Attendance Allowance – for people aged over state pension age who need help with personal care.Carer's Allowance – supporting people who care for someone with substantial care needs.Employment Support – what help is available for returning to work or adapting your role after a stroke.Disabled Facilities Grant – for home adaptations like grab rails, stairlifts, wet rooms, and more.Blue Badge Scheme – parking support for people with mobility challenges.Council Tax Reductions and other local support options. We'll also highlight the organisations and advisory services that can help you apply for these benefits, understand eligibility, and take the stress out of the process — including charities like Stroke Association, Age UK, Citizens Advice, Disability Rights UK, and specialist local support services.Whether you're a stroke survivor, a family member, a carer, or someone who just wants to understand what support is out there — this episode is for you. We'll explain what each benefit does, who qualifies, how to apply, and where to get trusted advice — because navigating the system shouldn't add to your burden.Let's get into it.Personal Independence Payments (PIP) - https://www.gov.uk/pip/how-to-claimAttendance Allowance  - https://www.gov.uk/attendance-allowance/how-to-claim Blue Badge - https://www.gov.uk/apply-blue-badgeCouncil Tax Reduction - https://www.gov.uk/apply-council-tax-reductionStroke Association - https://www.stroke.org.uk/Citizens Advice - https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/#HeartTransplant#eatingdisorder#RareCondition#HealthJourney#LifeChangingDiagnosis#MentalHealth#Vulnerability#SelfCompassion#PostTraumaticGrowth#MedicalMiracle#BBCSports#Inspiration#Cardiology#Surgery#Podcast#Healthcare#HeartHealth#MedicalBreakthrough#EmotionalJourney#SupportSystem#HealthcareHeroes#PatientStories#CardiologyCare#MedicalJourney#LifeLessons#MentalWellness#HealthAwareness#InspirationalTalk#LivingWithIllness#RareDiseaseAwareness#SharingIsCaring#MedicalSupport#BBCReporter#HeartDisease#PodcastInterview#HealthTalk#Empowerment#Wellbeing#HealthPodcast#prostatecancer#Aid's#prostateCheck out our website at www.whostomanddick.comCheck out our website at www.whostomanddick.com

A good Samaritan has told of the terrifying moment boiling sugar water was poured over her as she lay in bed. What started as a decent deed from the Whitstable mum ended with a horror attack, which also saw her hit around the head with a hammer. Also in today's podcast, the Folkestone son of a woman who was arrested with her partner in Iran on charges of espionage has confirmed they've been jailed for 10 years. Lindsay and Craig Foreman were detained in January 2025 while travelling through the country on a motorcycle journey. Frustrated residents have joined forces to demand the return of their lost community centre, described as “the heart of the village”. They came together outside the now-shut building which previously served as the base for Age UK day centre. There are calls for parents in Kent to be more aware of the impact physical activity can have on their children's mental health. Exercise is being suggested as a way of helping those who might be struggling with things like stress, depression or anxiety. And you can hear from a couple who are relishing the opportunity to realise a lifetime's ambition of running their community pub. They've taken over The Rising Sun in Rochester, a venue they've frequented for many years. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Peter Mandelson recently made headlines after being caught urinating against a wall, having spent the evening at George Osborne's Notting Hill home. But is it any wonder, when so many public loos are being sold off for profit, for example in West Norwood and the Isle of Dogs?Last year, Age UK's Lifting the Lid report found that in the last decade at least 97 council-run toilets have shut across the capital, and closures outnumber openings three to one. Seven London councils now manage fewer than ten public toilets in their entire borough. With the public loo under threat, John Darlington, Director of Projects for the World Monuments Fund, joins us to discuss the origins and history of the toilet - and argues that unlike other infrastructure, it still serves a much-needed and essential purpose. Rachel Reeves wakes to mixed headlines today after she announced a range of spending cuts to part fill a £22 billion ‘shortfall' in public spending for this year alone.  The most controversial move by Reeves on Monday was her decision to axe the winter fuel benefit for pensioners not eligible for benefits. That saves £1.5 billion but has already been blasted by Martin Lewis and Age UK as a blunt measure that will hurt those on modest pensions who struggle to make ends meet.  Is there more hard medicine to come? Katy Balls speaks to Kate Andrews and John McTernan, former political secretary to Tony Blair.
