We're covering the week that was in Alabama government & politics. Todd's guests: - New Public Service Commission President Cynthia Almond - State Auditor candidate Josh Pendergrass - Historian Dr. Richard Bailey, who walks us through the history of Juneteenth.
By the mid-70s, Jeff Beck was a bit of an enigma. He started out as a blues player in The Yardbirds replacing Eric Clapton and sharing the stage for few shows with Jimmy Page. Then he formed The Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart as his lead singer and Ronnie Wood on the bass where the band tried to be more commercial. He created one of the great power trios with Beck, Bogert and Appice and while they were a strong live draw, they didn't get a lot of radio play. By 1975 Jeff, who was never one to stay still musically, decided to put together his first Jeff Beck album. Instead of blues and hard rock based riffs he melded with Max Middleton on piano who helped write the songs, Phil Chen on the bass, and Richard Bailey to create some jazzy jams that allowed everyone to shine. However, he also had help from heavyweights George Martin, who produced the album as he did The Beatles, and Stevie Wonder, who wrote a couple of songs for Jeff including the sublime Cause We Ended As Lovers. It may have originally been a bittersweet song for his wife Syreeta but Jeff makes it his own by laying emotional guitar over over the mellow notes. And Jeff shows off his jazzy abilities on songs like Constipated Duck (great title), space funk on AIR blower, frenetic playing on Scatterbrain and one of his real signatures, Freeway Jam. Many of these became live staples of his for decades and the album not only went to #4 in the US but sold platinum despite the fact that there are no vocals on the album. With room to explore, Jeff led this group on a fun, experimental and tight journey to create a guitar masterpiece which is more jazz than rock. Frenette's love of music started at the age of 5 while playing the bongos and listening to records with his parents. Artists like Perez Perado, Tito Puente, Herb Albert, Johnny Cash and Tom Jones were constantly spinning on the record player. By the age of 10, Matt was learning his rudiments in a marching and concert band. Some of Matt's early influences include Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Keith Moon, Michael Shrieve, Danny Seraphine,Billy Cobham, and later influences include Manu Katche, Steve Gadd, and Richard Bailey. Frenette is a founding member of Streetheart and his legacy as the other half of one of rock's greatest rhythm sections is still a part of Canadian rock legend. Matt's fierce approach to every song and powerful grooves he created were a big part of the musical foundation that Streetheart built their unmistakable sound on in the early days. In 1979 Matthew left Streetheart to join Paul Dean's new band Loverboy. Originally, Matt Frenette played drums for a side-project band, Headpins while Bernie Aubin played drums for a fellow Vancouver band, the soon to be renamed Loverboy. But within months, Aubin and Frenette swapped bands, where each continues to play to the present Alongside fellow Loverboy founding members Mike Reno, Paul Dean, Doug Johnson, with Ken "Spider" Sinnaeve, Matt Frenette has been "Working for the Weekend" since forming in Calgary, Alberta over 36 years ago. Loverboy has sold more than 10 million albums, earning four multi-platinum plaques, including the four-million-selling "Get Lucky." In 1982, as a member of Loverboy, Frenette went on to win a "still-record" six Juno awards. Matt's solid groove, versatile musicality and his visually exciting performance has created a demand for his appearance in many different artists' recordings, videos and tours, such as: Tom Cochrane, Bryan Adams, Kim Mitchell, Colin James and many other talented musicians. The foundation of our world is rocks. They come in many different sizes, shapes, colors and textures. On the Steeples and Peoples podcast this week Richard Bailey, long time owner of Earthly Elements joins us to talk about his passion for these treasures from the ground. He shares about how as a young boy in Dallas he became fascinated with rocks and his personal business as a child that was unique compared to other 6 year olds. Richard talks about how he travels to find various different rocks at shows around the country that are considerably valuable but yet maintains his focus of providing opportunities for kids to purchase their only jewels at a reasonable cost. A Renaissance man himself, Richard shares with us about how he has parlayed his rocking world at the yearly festival. Website: earthlyrocks.com Address: 33 N. Episode 2 Live From My Drum Room, which aired "live" on Facebook on April 29, 2020. This is an edited version of the full version on YouTube. An episode devoted to endorsements in the drum industry and dispelling some of the myths. Viewers posted questions and comments and I've kept some of them to give context to the commentary. However, a lot of the questions and comments were edited to keep this succinct and on topic. Disclaimer: I based my commentary and opinions on my own personal experience working in Artist Relations for almost 30 years. However, the business has changed dramatically since I left the drum industry in 2013, so some of this may no longer apply. If nothing else, it's a peek into how endorsements worked in the drum industry during the golden era of the music business. We have lots of San Diego topics on the table including a federal fraud case in Poway, winners and losers in CA budget, the future of Coronado mayor Richard Bailey, Jim Desmond and Congestion Pricing on Freeways, and much more. It's Wednesday June 28, 2023. Here's what John Riley thinks: Poway Social Security Fraud A Poway man defrauded the Social Security system and the VA system of over $830,000 over 3 decades as he schemed to collect using his dead mother's name. WTF? Crazy story. Social Security will not be solvent starting in 2034. Poway seems to be in the news for all of the wrong reasons. Gavin Newsom's CA Budget – Winners & Losers (housing, climate, auto dealers, education) California had to spend less than they wanted due to the pending deficit. The CA budget is loaded with examples of winners and losers. Isn't that what government policies always do? Some win at the expense of others. Some lose, so others can win. What ever happened to free trade and win-win outcomes? Tragic Teen e-Bike Death in Encinitas Collision While we mourn the loss of a young man in an e-bike accident, we look more broadly at the innovation in the e-bike market. Could this be a solution to help cities transition from suburban to urban? Do we have enough bike lanes? Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey is Running for County Board of Supervisors Maybe you have seen Richard Bailey's social media and direct mail messages. He has a lot to say about “The San Diego Comeback”. Why is a mayor of little ol' Coronado commenting about issues beyond his city? Because he is running for office! Plus we discuss some proposed tax increases under consideration. Jim Desmond and SANDAG Congestion Freeway Tax They are already planning to charge a per-mile tax for road usage. It's not a bad idea, but it will be difficult to implement fairly. Now San Diego is considering a Congestion Tax for freeway usage to subsidize mass transit. What's going on here? This is a tax on the many to benefit the few. Mass transit ridership is in decline, so why are we subsidizing it? Paloma Aguirre, Imperial Beach, and the Problem of Tijuana Sewage Seems this sewage problem in the South Bay has going on for decades, yet they still can't fix it. Now the County Board of Supervisors has declared a state of emergency. San Diego congressional delegates are pushing President Biden to solve the problem. Meanwhile some beaches in Imperial Beach have been closed for a year and a half. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria: Corporate Welfare vs Road Repair Todd Gloria flip flopped. City officials and business leaders lobbied for San Diego to host a design event. Todd Gloria vowed to ensure it was privately funded. Now he is singing a different tune. He wants to use taxpayer dollars to subsidize corporations in town in order to generate more tax revenue. Should the city be run as a business? Should those resources instead be used to repair roads? San Diego Community Forum We discuss San Diego homelessness, eminent domain, Poway's Billion Dollar Bond, Steve Garvey as a California Senator, and this kerfuffle over Democrat vs Democratic. #SanDiego #homelessness #homeless #ranchobernardo #republicans #democrats #Poway #SteveGarvey #Westwood #richardbailey #coronado #encinitas #ebikes #toddgloria #jimdesmond #sandag #congestiontax #tijuana #sewege #imperialbeach #socialsecurity #babyformula #tariffs #education JRP0324 Relevant Links: A Poway man's mother died in 1990. All the way back in 2019 Craig and Jeremy (you know, the guys in charge and the ones with the wildly popular Ted Lasso show) approached Larry to do a show. Something different. Something new. Larry devised a useless debate show. So, the first episode was ready to be recorded in March of 2020...and, well, you know. But here it is! The show as it was always meant to be! Joined by comedians Rebecca Jaffe, Ryne Thorson, Richard Bailey, and The Front Row's very own Vanessa Ferguson, this "pilot" episode couldn't have gone any better! (Some mild language, but no worse than a congressperson's Twitter feed!)

Richard Bailey, born in Guyana (then British Guiana), raised in Trinidad, and long resident in England, is the go-to drummer for major recording and touring artists in the UK since the 1970s. Jamming and recording with the likes of Jeff Beck and Bob Marley as a teenager, Bailey was a pivotal member of the new generation of musicians who forged a funky and jazzy new direction for British music from the '70s onwards that reflected the rhythmic influences from the former colonies in the Caribbean, Africa and Asia. His bands Batti Mamzelle and The Breakfast Band, as well as his contributions to the groups Gonzalez, Incognito, and Citrus Sun lead to solo recording work that cements the Caribbean contribution to UK acid jazz and evolves kaisojazz and Caribbean jazz towards a universal recognition at the turn of the century. This is the last archived episode to be re-released. This was recorded last October in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with my friend Richard Bailey. Richard was one of the reasons I wanted to start this podcast. Over the years of knowing Richard I had spent countless hours listening to stories and I wanted to be able to capture some of that. For over 50 years leopard curs have been a major part of his life. We dive into his wild life of coon hunting and bear hunting in the U.P. https://www.patreon.com/treetalkintime https://www.facebook.com/treetalkinmedia https://www.instagram.com/treetalkinmedia
Richard Bailey Drummer for some of the greatest names in music Guyanese-born Richard Bailey started his drumming career in Trinidad at the age of nine, sitting in on percussion, drums and even bass guitar with his elder brother Robert's ( Robert Bailey, keyboard -OSIBISA) group, the top band in Trinidad and Tobago at that time. He also accompanied Robert, who played Hammond organ, to perform TV/Live concerts as a duo. At twelve years old Richard's family moved to London where Richard went to school, sitting in on occasional gigs in his spare time, but while at school Richard also excelled in athletics, becoming Southern England school champ at 100 metres. His father, Emmanuel McDonald Bailey had held the world record for the 100 yards and won an Olympic Bronze for England. Even so, Richard decided to leave school at fifteen to play drums, leaving behind athletics. At sixteen Richard was recording and touring the UK and USA with Johnny Nash and the great Bob Marley. By eighteen he had recorded Jeff Beck's biggest selling album “Blow By Blow” (1975, Epic/Sony Japan) to critical acclaim and appeared on the film soundtrack “Tommy” alongside Pete Townsend, Phil Chen and Roger Daltrey. The next decade saw many recordings and tours varying in style from Rock to Reggae to Jazz to Pop and Latin including two world tours with Billy Ocean and Basia. Richard occupied the drum seat with the the excellent British acid jazz/rock/soul fusion collective “INCOGNITO” for the past 15 years. More recently he has been an integral part of Steve Winwood's two important return-to-form recordings, 2003's About Time (Wincraft) and last year's Nine Lives (Columbia). Richard Bailey's versatility and unique style has made him a first-call kit-man for over four decades keeping him in high demand. https://www.richardbaileydrums.com/ To support the podcast and get access to features about guitar playing and song writing visit https://www.patreon.com/vichyland and also news for all the creative music that we do at Bluescamp UK and France visit www.bluescampuk.co.uk For details of the Ikaro music charity visit www.ikaromusic.com Big thanks to Josh Ferrara for the music

Richard Bailey, M.D., is an ENT Specialist who practices in Northwest Arizona. He received his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, and did his residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dr. Bailey has been in practice for more than 20 years. In this episode… Although Dr. Richard Bailey had suspected his own hearing loss for some time, he wasn't aware of how severe it was. However, the pandemic changed that. The difficulty of understanding patients talking through masks made him realize how much he'd been relying on his other senses to compensate for his hearing impairment. This experience had a profound effect on Dr. Bailey. It was the final push he needed to seek treatment. Now, his life is full of sounds that he never knew he was missing, and he no longer struggles to understand what's going on around him. Dr. Bailey's firsthand knowledge of hearing loss also gives him a better understanding of what his patients are going through so he can offer them a deeper level of care. In this episode of Listen Up!, Dr. Mark Syms is joined by Dr. Richard Bailey, an ENT Specialist, to discuss how Dr. Bailey's personal journey with hearing loss has impacted his life and work. Dr. Bailey also talks about what inspired him to become a doctor, advancements in hearing aid technology, and the people who have made a difference in his medical career. Stay tuned!
