Jim Shooter Interview For the 40th anniversary, Talking Joe continues its look back to the secret origins of GI Joe ARAH. Mark and Tim talk to Jim Shooter, editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics when G.I Joe was launched in 1982. As you will find out, Jim was instrumental to the creation and success of the G.I. Joe comic and the property as a whole. Jim Shooter is an American comics creator, editor, and publisher. He made his start writing Legion of Super-Heroes when he was only fourteen years old, He served as the editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics from 1978 to 1987 and during this time launched G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero in 1982, gave Larry Hama the writing gig and has editor in chief credits up to issue 64. After leaving Marvel he founded several comics companies including Valiant Comics, Defiant Comics and Broadway Comics. YouTube video is here. The audio only version should be broadly the same content - the audio quality is better, and has been edited down more carefuly. The benefit of the video is that we are all on screen and i share a few images on screen, but largely for colour rather than essential for understanding. https://youtu.be/7Hu7UMIajHM We talk about - Licensed Properties at Marvel in the 1980s - The general conditions for Marvel, teetering on bankruptcy, and owners who had no interest in comics. - How Marvel was approached for G.I. Joe and the initial steps to putting together the book. - The parallels and differences with the launch of Transformers at Marvel. - And so much more besides!

On this episode of Indefensible Ink, Ryan and Justin cover 1993's obscure (and bizarre) sci-fi superhero saga, Warriors of Plasm, a series that tried (and failed) to launch a superhero universe. They'll discuss one of comics' most divisive figures--former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter--as well as the role of slime in the cultural zeitgeist of the 1990s, why the protagonist of Warriors is The Worst, and some art choices that would make Georgia O'Keeffe blush. Also covered: Earth's laziest cops, poorly conceived nicknames, why Splatterball players should keep out of politics, and carnivorous floors. Discussed: Plasm #0, Warriors of Plasm #1-4 (1993).

Jim and Adam had originally planned to talk all things Iron Fist: his creation by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane, to the critically-acclaimed run by writers Ed Brubaker & Matt Fraction with artist extraordinaire David Aja, all the way to the recently-release Marvel/Netflix series. We were going to talk about all that, but something came-up. Namely some people's comments came-up, and those were by both Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso and SVP-Sales David Gabriel. Yup, this is the first episode of GCP to weigh-in on an internet controversy about the comics industry, and the guys set the rant-o-meter to 11 on it! The Graphic Content Podcast is a frank, sometimes NSFW podcast on comics whether it be characters, different books, or (as it is in this case) news about the comics industry. The opinions expressed in this episode are solely those of Jim (@jimmmers) & Adam (@AdamSMessinger), and do not necessarily reflect those of the comics stores they frequent or work at. With that disclaimer out of the way, we hope you enjoy their seat-of-their-pants viewpoints on what was said at Marvel's Retailer Summit last week, and their opinions on what the Mouse's House of Ideas should focus on going forward from it. Remember, GCP is available to you in a variety of formats. Download it from Podbean, the podcast's host site. Or from iTunes, where if you rate/review it we'd be eternally grateful. And you can pretty much download it from a myriad of other podcatchers like Stitcher and Soundcloud. Beyond that, we'd just love to hear what you thought of the episode. Either hit us up on the guys' individual twitter accounts, or the podcast's which can be found @graphicpodcast. We're also on instagram where you can find us @graphiccontent.podcast where we post all kinds of fun stuff. So when you're done reading your comics, make sure to turn on Graphic Content!
