The Seeds by Ann Nocenti and David Aja is an ecological, post-apocalyptic, science fiction, romantic, techno thriller. If that sounds like a lot, it's because Nocenti and Aja stuffed this four-issue story chock full of ideas and concepts. Perhaps The Seeds isn't a perfect comic book, but it's absolutely an intriguing one. It's a comic that demands your active attention. We tried to figure it out - no idea if we've understood it properly - but we had a good time with it. It's refreshing to read a mainstream comic that has a high estimation of the intellect of its readers. What'd you guys think about The Seeds? our graphic content module continues with the seeds by ann nocenti and david aja and a return to familiar subject matter. first, though, we talk about steven soderbergh for a while. then, we talk about how the seeds reminds us of the private eye, except with aliens and different ideological divides among its characters. we talk about the book's 90s feel re: aliens and accompanying aesthetics, the thematic appropriateness of the art, and the seemingly optimistic ending. we bring up the oft-discussed eco module. joey asks shreds about a new (to him) book website. we wonder what the “right” speed at which to read and consume and spend with comics may be. reading list for season seven understanding comics: the invisible art by scott mccloud coyote doggirl by lisa hanawalt the private eye by brian k. vaughan, marcos martin, muntsa vicente no longer human by junji ito the seeds by ann nocenti, david aja bitter root by david f. walker, chuck brown, sanford greene this one summer by mariko tamaki, jillian tamaki asterios polyp by david mazzucchelli kingdom come by mark waid, alex ross prison pit by johnny ryan ragnarok by walter simonson
On today's episode, I talk to Eisner Award-winning comics writer Matt Fraction. Originally from Chicago, Matt started out in comics writing for publishers like IDW in the early 2000s and broke into wider recognition with his 2006 series Casanova. This led to both more creator-owned work like Sex Criminals, Satellite Sam, and November as well as stints on Marvel books like Uncanny X-Men, Iron Man, Fantastic Four and a defining run on Hawkeye with David Aja. Matt also works in television, and most recently, he was the co-creator, writer, and executive producer of the brand-new Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which is out now! The Runners take a trip to Hand Central Station! It's another Daredevil extravaganza as we move through the second half of Brubaker's celebrated stint on the Man Without Fear this week. Once he deals with Mr. Fear and the fallout of his attack on all Matt Murdock holds dear, Daredevil must contend with still more threats both in the courtroom and on the streets of New York as the Hand make a bid to recruit him as their leader! Topics of discussion include the historic handling of Luke Cage, a celebration of David Aja, and a lengthy probe of how exactly Lady Bullseye's costume is meant to work. Plus: David's pick for your 2022 World Series Champions! Covering Daredevil (1998) #100-119 and #500 by Ed Brubaker (W), Michael Lark (P), Stefano Gaudiano (I), David Aja (P), and many more. In this episode, Phillip and Eric shift gears to break down the elements of how to do action in comics, with examples from Dragon Ball Z, Jack Kirby, Nextwave, David Aja, We3, and more! They discuss the qualities of clarity, kinetic energy, and emotional excitement with examples of doing it through the pure illustrative skill of movement and body posing, widescreen panel layouts, and cool, unconventional layouts to show dynamism. New episode out now! We cover a comic book for the first time on the podcast for our 69th episode! The four of us read Volume 1 of Wicked Things by John Allison and Max Sarin. We discuss the character of Charlotte Grote, the teen detective, and how her methods compare to other crime-solvers we've encountered. We love the visual art style and how it feels animated, get slightly confused by some of the plotlines, and wonder about the specific alternate reality of this world where everyone knows famous teen detectives. We also talk about the medium of comic books and how the storytelling is different, the uncertain nature of issue runs, and how we're talking about a very visual medium on a very auditory podcast. Katy cares about our social media, Carrie gets jealous of a blazer, Maddy gasped while reading, and Mack had to Google British slang. We also discuss the impermanence of our consumerism-driven world, confirm we don't feel bad when corporations are stolen from, debate what exactly constitutes an 18-bird roast, and learn what not to do when waking up in a hospital. Listen to hear about grocery store crushes, getting trapped in a skate bowl, childhood comic drawings, and a great Halloween witch impression. Plus one of us gets a Happy Meal delivery in the middle of recording! Enjoy! It's Hawkeye time! Again! Specifically the second half of 2012's classic by Matt Fraction, David Aja, Matt Hollingsworth, and Chris Eliopoulos (with Annie Wu and Francesco Francavilla rounding out the regular artists.) Jaina and Elias are digging into the tumultuous last 12 issues (that's #12-22 and an annual, for those keeping score at home,) the contemporaneous history of the issues, and fighting to figure out what order to talk about the dang issues in. Seriously! It's nearly as complicated as some of the "War of Kings" stuff.Next book club, we're reading the blessedly short "Taskmaster: Unthinkable" from 2010. It's four issues and collected in a single trade. Easy! Find it through your local library or back-issue bin. Next episode however, things take a turn for the fantastic. Excelsior!
It's Hawkeye time! Specifically 2012's classic by Matt Fraction, David Aja, Matt Hollingsworth, and Chris Eliopolous (with Annie Wu and Francesco Francivilla rounding out the regular artists.) Jaina and Elias revisit the first eleven issues of this seminal classic about a sad sack avenger, a different sad sack YOUNG avenger, and an apartment building in Bed-Stuy. Does it hold up? Yes. Duh. Is it still a perfect masterpiece? Welllllllll.....Next episode, things get coastal as we check in on the back half of "Hawkeye" with #12-22 and the annual! That's volumes 3 & 4 of the trades and there is no set order because existence is pain and trust us we get into it. Comics!
After quite a number of episodes away, our monthly (now quarterly-ish) look at every X-book published since "House of X/Powers of X" returns with a new title and a new coat of paint. In addition, there's a small detour into one of the X one-shots we loved: "Giant-Size X-Men: Thunderbird" #1. Oh, and apparently Elias is British or has been reading Kieron's newsletter too much because he kept spelling Judgment as Judgement.Next time, we're digging deep legendary "Hawkeye" comic series by Matt Fraction, David Aja, Annie Wu et al. Join us for the first 11 issues and a discussion of how we've been pronouncing David Aja's name wrong all this time.
The weather is hot. The comics are gearing up for something big. And we here at Make Mine Multiversity want to answer your burning questions about the Summers family, namely: hot or not? OK. More like good or not but wouldn't that have made for a fun, steamy episode? We also talk some of the books we're enjoying and we dunk on a couple books we're not. Only a little dunking; we don't want to be mean.Still keeping up with our book club? We got a bit ahead of ourselves in last week's description because next episode, we're watching MODOK! Sadly recorded before news of its cancelation hit. After that, we'll be off to the races with the legendary "Hawkeye" comic series by Matt Fraction, David Aja, Annie Wu et al.
Not a hoax, not a dream...in this episode, a character dies! And…gets better. It's the thrilling Season 1 Finale! The Scarlet Witch is powerful enough to change reality at times, but can she stop writers from constantly ruining her life? Let's find out! This is a comic book podcast and sure, there's some talk of movies and TV shows, but a book? With no pictures!? That's right true believers! Today's episode is all about All of the Marvels by Douglas Wolk. The good Mr. Wolk took upon himself the great endeavor of reading every issue of a comic set in the Marvel 616 universe. Then he tried to synthesize that information into something of a coherent book. Was he successful? The two hosts can't even agree! But the discussion that disagreement inspires is fascinating.Still keeping up with our book club? Next time you can tune in for a discussion on the legendary "Hawkeye" comic series by Matt Fraction, David Aja, Annie Wu et al. It's impossible to have a bad time while reading those issues! To follow along, read the first dozen issues and the first annual, and you will be right on target.
This is part two of "Hawkeye" by Matt Fraction, David Aja, and Annie Wu, which is included in the trade paperbacks "Hawkeye: LA Woman" and "Hawkeye: Rio Bravo," or else the second half of "Hawkeye: The Saga of Barton and Bishop." It's also by Matt Hollingsworth, Javier Pulido, Francesco Francavilla, and Chris Eliopoulis. We finally get a chance to go deeper into the story of the two Hawkeyes, as Kate moves to LA to hang out with Columbo and Clint goes from futzing around to finding out. We'll also talk about strategies for writing tricky content and the complications of writing legacy characters. Music by Sleuth. Our next episode will be on volume two of "Golden Age" by Roxanne Moreil and Cydril Pedrosa.
This episode covers "Hawkeye" by Matt Fraction and David Aja. It's part one of two, and is equivalent to either the trade paperbacks "Hawkeye: My Life Is a Weapon" and "Hawkeye: Little Hits," or else the first half of "Hawkeye: The Saga of Barton and Bishop." It's also by Matt Hollingsworth, Javier Pulido, Francesco Francavilla, Steve Lieber, Alan Davis, and Jesse Hamm. Confused yet? So are we. Honestly JD, Jeff, and Jam are going to spend the first half of this episode airing our grievances about the completely opaque way that Marvel collects its trades. But eventually we get to talk about this really interesting book, how it does a lot of interesting things with the superhero genre and with these characters in particular, and how even in the golden age of graphic novels, there are “mainstream” trades worth waiting for. Also, apologies to Francesco Francavilla and Javier Pulido, we had you completely mixed up for like… most of this episode. Music by Sleuth Our next episode will be on the second half of "Hawkeye: The Saga of Barton and Bishop," or the trades "Hawkeye: L.A. Woman" and "Hawkeye: Rio Bravo," by Matt Fraction and David Aja.
Gary returns to the show to talk with Marcus about IMMORTAL IRON FIST: THE 7 CAPITAL CITIES OF HEAVEN, by Matt Fraction, Ed Brubaker and David Aja. Released in 2007, this story spans issues #8-14 of Immortal Iron Fist and features Danny Rand in a tournament against the other Immortal Weapons for the fate of K'un Lun while also uncovering the secrets of the mystical city he calls home.
Original broadcast date December 16, 2021. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2021/12/binary-system-podcast-294-lore-olympus-and-hawkeye/ After a weekly SitRep that's equal parts bummer and bonus (Covid is still scary, but Omicron is possibly mild, we lost Anne Rice this week, but sister Hannah is on the mend) we jump into Lore Olympus (WE ARE ALL THE BLUSHING CHICKEN) and discuss how the first two episodes of Hawkeye are very fun, even if they demonstrate that we are terrible Transformers fans. (Hailee Steinfeld was the lead in Bumblebee HOW DID WE FORGET THAT?) The outro music this week is a clip from Riviera by Maarten Schellekens. When it comes to who's responsible for a comic book's success, who is “The Greatest: Writers or Artists?” It's an age-old debate and one we don't resolve on this broadcast but I do think we make some salient points about how necessary each of their contributions are. Each tribe has certain limitations and only through their combined powers do we get the best stuff. There's some discussion of the “comic book auteur” as well and how these rare cartoonists who can truly do both jobs well are less plentiful than we think, thus deserving of all the accolades they get. But when it comes to work-for-hire comics created by teams placed together under editorial direction there needs to be some sort of revision of credits when these things are adapted into television and movies. As we note in this conversation there's no morally defensible reason Matt Fraction got a producer credit on the Hawkeye series on Disney Plus while the artist David Aja didn't. Follow us! Bro, what a great episode, right? Hawkeye Episode 2: Hide and Seek provided laughs, great fight scenes (even if they were just LARPing fights) and just overall fun and joy. Kate Bishop finally gets to meet her longtime hero Clint Barton. But not all goes according to plan. (Except giving Pizza Dog his name. Or, rather, his title of honor.) The Tracksuit Mafia is out for blood, specifically Ronin's blood. Clint is still trying to make up for his time as the hooded figure who terrorized the criminal underworld for years. And there's still something fishy going on with Jack. This episode had so many great tidbits, comebacks, and all out holiday fun! Happy Holidays, Bro! The comic book for this episode is: “Hawkeye” by Matt Fraction and David Aja.

We can't believe we're 5 episodes in already. Here's what you're getting this week!As always, we kick off with some news:Chloe Zhao getting high praise from Angelina Jolie in reference to the Eternals. Angelina called her a very special director. Small little stories like this are continuing to add to this being the Marvel property I'm most excited to see.John Ridley, 12 Years a Slave writer, is taking over the Black Panther comics. Ta-Nehisi Coates had been the writer on this series for the past 5 years on a critically acclaimed run.An interesting piece of miscellany. A planned Hulk arc originally begun in 1984 is just seeing print now. It looks like this has changed a lot in 35 years, but the book, Monsters written by Barry Windsor-Smith and published by Fantagraphics will be released on 5/5/2021. The copy reads: “Created over a period of 35 years, Barry Windsor-Smith' Monsters is a tour de force of visual storytelling. Part family drama, part espionage thriller, part metaphysical journey, it is an intimate portrait of individuals struggling to reclaim their lives and an epic political odyssey across two generations of American history.” I must say it looks beautiful, but it'll cost you a pretty penny at $79.99.After that we get down to this week's comic swap and Steve had Joe read a grimy, pre-post-apocalyptic take (wr. Ann Nocenti, ill. David Aja) from Dark Horse/Berger Books release The Seeds. Then we move on to the spotlight shows du jour, it's our season wrap ups of Invincible and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. We run down the (mostly) upcoming comics adaptations:M.O.D.O.K. - May 21Sweet Tooth - June 4Loki - June 9And of course talk about what's on the stack this month:The Department of Truth vol. 1 (Steve)Infinity Train ( Steve ) -PLEASE WATCH THIS SHOW!Immortal Hulk vol. 1 (Joe)Scumbag vol. 1 (Joe)Big Trouble in Little China comic adaptation (Joe)Mare of Easttown ( Joe)And we really hope you're coming back in two weeks for our rundown of Postal and our review of Rick and Morty (plus bonus M.O.D.O.K. chatter)Full episode archive: Bubbling Up PodcastFollow us on Instagram or Facebook!
