If you're a fan of a Marvel comic published in the last few decades that isn't about a mutant, chances are that Tom Brevoort had a hand in it.  He's Marvel's Executive Editor and Senior VP of Publishing and he stewarded the Avengers from Heroes Return to very recently.  We spoke to him for so long that we had to split it into two episodes, and this week we talk about his early time in comics and some of the thinking behind Heroes Return.  Tom Brevoort is also an incredibly knowledgeable person about comics in general and very generous with his time.  We can't thank him enough for his time!  You can read his writing at The Tom Brevoort Experience – Stuff From the Self-Indulgent World of Tom Brevoort and even though he's now working on books with mutants in them, I'd highly recommend trying them out!  His instincts for what makes good comics are exemplary!

Settle in for a steak dinner with Marvel's Tom Brevoort as we discuss how a guy whose first love was DC Comics ended up at Marvel, why he hated his early exposure to Marvel so much he'd tell his parents not to buy them because "they're bad," the pluses and minuses of comic book subscriptions (and the horror when issues arrived folded), how Cerebus the Aardvark inspired him to believe he could build a career in indie comics, the most unbelievable thing he ever read in a Flash comic, how he might never have worked at Marvel had I not gone to school with Bob Budiansky, the prevailing Marvel ethos he disagreed with from the moment he was hired, what it takes to last 35 years at the same company without either walking off in disgust or getting fired, the differing ways Marvel and DC reused their Golden Age characters, how to prevent yourself from being pedantic when you own an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of comics, and much more.

I'm Cautiously Optimistic about Magik's First Solo Ongoing Comic given The Conductor of X, Tom Brevoort, past comments about the character and what he could do now that he holds the editorial keys to the X-Men Kingdom. (From Marvel's PRESS RELEASE) Magik Defends Mutantkind From Demonic Threats in New Solo Series Writer Ashley Allen and artist Germán Peralta launch Magik's first-ever ongoing solo series this January! This January, mutant icon Magik headlines her first ongoing solo series! The X-Men's resident sorcerer will unleash her Soulsword, spells, and dark side against mystical threats targeting the mutant community.   Rising star Ashley Allen, who wrote the character earlier this year in X-MEN: BLOOD HUNT—MAGIK, will write the script. The character will be drawn by acclaimed artist Germán Peralta, known for his recent work on BLACK PANTHER and last year's LOKI series. From Colossus' kid sister to New Mutant, Illyana Rasputina has climbed the ranks over the years to become the fiercest X-Man of them all, and her long overdue solo adventures will see her tap into her mystical expertise and unique mutant magic like never before. The mystic mutant goes demon hunting in her own series! The X-Man Illyanna Rasputina strikes out on her own with new allies and dark powers arrayed against her. Something ancient has awakened beneath the Alaskan ice. Unfortunately for it, that's Magik's territory now! Throughout the series, Magik will also be forced to come to terms with her tragic history and learn to control her demonic Darkchylde persona. After years of suppression, Illyana's Darkchylde form returns from the depths of her tormented soul to offer her more strength and power, but at what cost? “I'm beyond excited to be returning to write Illyana!” Allen said. “Supernatural stories featuring characters with hearts of gold are my favorite, so this series has been a dream to write! I can't wait for readers to experience the adventure we take Magik on to slay some demons … and maybe accept some of her own.”   “I am very excited about this project,” Peralta shared. “Magik is a character with an incredible background, surrounded by darkness and mystery. Additionally, she is visually spectacular in all her versions, and I personally love Chris Bachalo's design. I really enjoy drawing action scenes, as well as emotionally-driven scenes, and Ashley Allen writes a super intriguing script, where she balances both of these types of situations, making my job even more fun than it already is. I mean, what artist wouldn't love to draw Magik with her great sword facing all kinds of demons?” Sources: https://www.marvel.com/articles/comics/magik-headlines-first-solo-series https://www.tumblr.com/brevoorthistoryofcomics/86860874679/life-in-a-four-color-world-column-on-x-men-2003 https://bleedingcool.com/comics/tom-brevoort-x-men-and-illyana-rasputin-magik/ https://bleedingcool.com/comics/how-tom-brevoort-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love-magik/

The horror-comedy tells a fast-paced, cautionary tale about systems designed to control expression and behavior and explores how society organizes itself when ratings affect your day-to-day life. With humor, horror, and the repercussions of nonexistent humanity, DEATH RATIO'D offers readers a fresh look at how today's social practices can be pushed to the extreme and do anything but bring the world closer together.Mark Russell, thanks for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast for the second time! They came out of nowhere, like a jolt of lightning in 1990. Packs of trading cards, but instead of featuring sports heroes, they were the heroes of the Marvel universe. That's right, we're talking Marvel trading cards with the two guys who did the heavy lifting for those early 90s sets: Bob Budiansky and Tom Brevoort! Celebrating the 34th anniversary of the first set (why wait for a round number?), we get into everything cards: how the project came about, how (and by whom) they were designed, making character decisions, soliciting the art, and where exactly they got those back-of-the-card stats. It's a crazy tale, and one we're excited to share with you! Thank you to David Harper and his 2014 article "The Secret Origin and Lasting Impact of the Marvel Universe Cards" (on SKTCHD) for inspiring this episode.___________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. This week we're bringing you an interview with one of the most prolific comic book writer/artists out right now, Chip Zdarsky!  He's co-creator and artist for Sex Criminals, he's written for Batman, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Howard The Duck, Jughead, and created, wrote, and illustrated Public Domain as well as created and wrote Kaptara.  But first, did Baby Geniuses LITERALLY crawl so Spy Kids could run?  Are we a friend to Canadian comic creators?  What is Chip's creative relationship with Matt Fraction like? IS Sex Criminals the "wife comic?" Will Sex Criminals ever be made into a TV show?  Do artists tend to be liked more than writers due to creative consistency?  Does Chip prefer to be an artist or writer?  What is Chip's podcast Mangasplaining?  How does Chip Zdarsky feel about creative rights within the comic industry? How does Chip feel about taking on Joker Year One?  What is his take going to be on the most iconic comic book villain?  What makes a good comic book editor in the industry?  How does it feel to get a “Tompliment” from Tom Brevoort? Is Chip Zdarsky solely responsible for legalizing marijuana in New York City in Marvel Comics?  Does he smoke weed?  How does he feel about charging fans for signatures?  What are some of Chip's most rewarding writer/editor relationships in the comic industry?  How does that effect his story with Peter Parker & long time hater/Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson?  What are positive signs of a good comics editor?  Did Chip Zdarsky's Avengers comic predict what would happen in America post-pandemic back in 2019?  Why does Chip think writing DC comics harder than writing Marvel comics?  Is weed legal in the DC Universe?  Tune in to hear Chip Zdarsky here on Comics and Chronic! As Tigra, Soldier and Hunter's Moon attempt to reach Marc in time, Plesko reveals to Marc his motivation and intent. Elsewhere, Zodiac faces not only Reese, but the Midnight Mission. Reese reproaches Zodiac and taunts him by revealing that Moon Knight can no longer be resurrected by Khonshu - thus, if Black Spectre kills Moon Knight, Zodiac will be deprived of the pleasure himself. In a neat twist, the Mission allows Zodiac to walk away after an unheard agreement between Zodiac and the Mission is made. Moon Knight's final moments are met with Marc valiantly trying to disarm the equipment Black Spectre had used to drive the city crazy. In a massive explosion, Moon Knight and the entire floor are decimated, with Moon Knight's congregation helplessly looking on. A month later, the Midnight Mission is still operational - this time with Reese receiving the requests for help from those that visit. MOON RATING : Rebecca:

Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing return to Comic Book Couples Counseling, discussing their longstanding Star Trek obsession and how they transformed it into a propulsive narrative for the rest of us to enjoy. Their latest IDW Publishing series picks up where Star Trek: Deep Space Nine left off, fulfilling Benjamin Sisko's promise to his son. The Emissary returns from the Wormhole on a mission to halt a God-killing entity while reconnecting with an emotionally anxious Jake Sisko. As longtime Sisko stans ourselves, we've been itching to discuss our favorite Star Trek captain. As a father, he serves a function unlike any other lead character. His priorities create a unique relationship with Starfleet and the Federation, and it's a joy to see how that tug-of-war continues beyond the sevens seasons we consumed on television. Partnering with artists Ramon Rosanas, Oleg Chudakov, Joe Eisma, and Erik Tamayo (not to forget amazing variant cover artists like friend-of-the-pod Christian Ward - peep that gorgeous episode art), Kelly and Lanzing have carved a living universe for Star Trek comics. Their story is free to explore new areas along the timeline; untouched by the live-action iteration. Truly, they're boldly going where no one has gone before. The first six issues in their Star Trek series are currently available and will be collected in the "Godshock" trade paperback on July 18th. Also discussed in this week's episode is the new Guardians of the Galaxy series spearheaded by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly. Part one in the "Grootfall" storyline is now available from Marvel Comics. Mystery surrounds their Space Western, but within this episode, you'll learn how these creators won't leave you stressing for too long. GofG, Star Trek, Captain America, Batman Beyond. These two have a lot going on. Keep up to date by following their socials. Hit up Collin Kelly on Twitter. Find Jackson Lanzing on Twitter and Instagram.
