Today's guest, the celebrated photographer Albert Watson, OBE, is a man on the move. ¶ This is not a recent development. Watson's professional journey began in Scotland in 1959, where he studied mathematics at night. His day job? Working for the Ministry of Defense plotting courses—speed, altitude, distance, payload—for British missiles pointed towards Cold War Russia. ¶ Watson's affinity for the mathematical gave way to his interest in the arts, when, in school, he dove head-first into ALL of them: drawing, painting, textile design, pottery, silversmithing, and graphic design. ¶ Later, on his 21st birthday his wife bought him a small camera. He became obsessed: ¶ “All I know is that I clicked the shutter, and suddenly, magically, I got negatives back, that I could learn to process myself. And then, even better, I got into a dark room with a piece of white paper under an enlarger, and you put it in some chemistry, and lo and behold, up comes an image. Magic—black magic, I called it. Amazing, insane, beautiful.” ¶ Then came the magazines: Harper's Bazaar, GQ, Mademoiselle, Entertainment Weekly, Details, and Vogue. ALL of the Vogues. And the ad campaigns: Prada, Chanel, Revlon, and Levis. ¶ And yet, after all that, talk to the man about his work, any facet of his career, and the conversation invariably comes back to the print—the math, the chemistry, the graphic design involved—and about the journey the print takes—from camera to magazine, from magazine to gallery and, sometimes, from gallery to museum, as so many of his have. ¶ Our editor-at-large George Gendron talked to Watson about all of it—day rates, social media, and his stunning apartment in TriBeCa.

Dear Life Warriors, What an incredible story.THE PERSON -Creative at heart, passionate by trade. Ever since Nik was a little girl growing up in Brooklyn, NY,  her happy place has always been an escape to her creative outlets. This is where she excelled and thrived: in fashion, dance and cosmetology. Nik recalls many childhood memories being creative, from building pilgrims out of clay to exploring nature with her late mother. She also learned the importance of appearance and dressing to the "T" from her late Guyanese grandmother, who never left the house without lipstick nor being dressed like the outdoors was her runway, even if it was just a trip to the grocery store. Definitely something Nik took after—minus the lipstick (lol)!!                                                                                                                                                                                          THE CAREER -A young designer who got her start in 1998. Nik dove in head first after a major break in 2002 when she was introduced to the Dipset Family. That's when she discovered that wardrobe styling actually existed as a career. Her determination, dedication, hard work, and eagerness to learn afforded her a plethora of amazing opportunities to work with many greats along the way, like world renowned photographers: Albert Watson, Vikram Pathak, Dennis Leupold; artists: Cardi B, Estelle,TI, Nicki Minaj, Rotimi, Dave East; athletes - Carmelo Anthony, Jimmy Butler, Demariyus Thomas, Matt Harvey; film: LaChanze, Terri J. Vaughn,Tara Wallace - to name a few. While Nik was building her foundation as a well rounded stylist, designing cooled on the back burner for years. Opportunities to design only surfaced for clients out of necessity, and it didn't go much further than that. Nik decided to return to her roots 22 year later by launching N.E.W by Nik Woodz in 2020.Purchase Char's Journal: https://www.amazon.com/30-DAYS-NEW-YOU-JOURNAL/dp/0578726572Subscribe to the show on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DearLifeWarriorsABOUT DEAR LIFE WARRIORS (DLW): Dear Life Warrior's mission is to empower people of color with unyielding tenacity to hang on until destiny is fulfilled. Our vision is that everyone that watches Dear Life Warriors will have a great understanding that the Journey of Life is a process, and if a process is to be fruitful it will take determination to reach completion.#dearlifewarriors #mentalhealthatwork #leadershipdevelopment #lifecoachingtips #lifecoach #softskillstraining #professionaldevelopment #softskillstrainer #corporatetrainer #executivecoach #mentalhealth

Doubly deFINEd... When Paula Wallace founded the SCAD Museum of Art in 2011, today's programming was exactly what she envisioned for the teaching museum - an international forum for cultural conversation. Within its walls, visitors and current students interact with and learn from legendary masters, contemporary icons, and notable alumni through exhibitions, gallery talks, and lectures. In today's episode, you'll experience a piece of that magic through two conversations. In part one, you'll hear from the interdisciplinary virtuoso and 2021 SCAD deFINE ART honoree Sanford Biggers. In part two, you'll hear from SCAD graphic design alumna Emily Furr. Both artists opened exhibitions during deFINE ART 2021 along with previous season five guests Albert Watson and the Haas Brothers. The Sanford conversation comes from Paula Wallace's zoom interview during the festival, and the Furr interview comes from a one-on-one walkthrough with Paula and Emily through her exhibition space in the SCAD MOA Alumni Gallery.

It’s hard to believe that another year of the B&H Photography Podcast is on the books and, as has become our way, we close out the year with a casual conversation about our most memorable episodes from 2019. But before we get started, a recent count showed that we have listeners in all but 15 countries. To us, that’s remarkable, and we’d like to offer a very heartfelt thank you and best wishes for a happy holiday season to all our listeners around the world. We look forward to your feedback and suggestions for photography conversations in 2020. Allan Weitz starts off today’s show with a few of his favorite 2019 episodes, including our talk with photographer Stephen Mallon, who documented the recovery of Flight 1549—referred to as the “Miracle on the Hudson”—from the icy waters of the Hudson River after its forced landing in January 2009. On that episode, we welcomed Denise Lockie, a passenger on that flight. Allan also mentions our conversations with Albert Watson and Vince Aletti as favorites and our chats on car photography with Nate Hassler and on D.I.Y. camera makers. For his part, Jason Tables starts his list with our episode on storm chasing and extreme-weather photography as a favorite. He also recalls “The Copyright Infringement Superhighway” with attorney David Deal, our talk with photographer Corinne May Botz on her series “Milk Factory,” and our hilarious and insightful conversation with portraitist Mark Mann. John Harris begins with some of the 2019 episodes that performed best in terms of number of downloads, some of which surprised us. He also discusses a few of his favorites episodes, including “Conflict Photography—Motivation and Consequence.” Other memorable episodes he mentions are “Commitment to Community—Rhynna Santos, Michael Young, and the Bronx Documentary Center,” our talks with rock photographer Mick Rock and photojournalist Shahidul Alam, and, of course, our conversation with actor and photographer Jeff Bridges.  Enjoy our casual end-of-the-year chat, subscribe to the B&H Photography Podcast on Apple Podcasts, join our Facebook group, and have yourself a happy new year.  Photograph © Jason Tawiah

He has shot more than 100 Vogue covers, 40 covers for Rolling Stone, created iconic images of Steve Jobs, Mick Jagger, Alfred Hitchcock, David Bowie, a nude Kate Moss on her 19th birthday, and a properly clothed Queen Elizabeth, who later bestowed upon Watson an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for “services to photography.” On this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we present our conversation with Watson, which also serves as an intro to future episodes, which will present a sampling of conversations we held with other wonderful wedding and portrait photographers at the Depth of Field Conference. Join us for this inspiring conversation and subscribe on Apple Podcast, Google Podcast, Overcast and Stitcher for all upcoming episodes. Host Gareth Fullerton is joined this week by regular pundit Tim McCann and special guest Albert Watson. Albert forged his name in the Irish League with spells at Ballymena United and Linfield, before he moved to Canada where he spent five years with FC Edmonton. The defender then moved to Iceland last March to link up with KR Reykjavik but is now back in Northern Ireland and assessing his future. But where will his next move be? Will it be in the Irish League? Or will he return to North America?  We find out more in this week's show. We also have our 90 Seconds Q&A, weekend predictions and our weekly Charity Bet, courtesy of BetMcLean.
