Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast
Jason Aaron and Mahmud Asrar on Bug Wars

Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast

After doing a stint on Conan the Barbarian for Marvel, Jason Aaron and Mahmud Asrar aimed to keep their collaboration roaring. They loved their time in Hyperborea but also wanted a realm to claim as their own and one where they could unleash their most vicious instincts. Bug Wars, their latest partnership, published at Image Comics, is the beautifully brutal saga of "The Yard." Here, in the tall grass, below teenager Slade Slaymaker's home, Beetle Clans rage against the Ant Imperium while the Systers of the Spyder whisper of a coming storm. We're excited to have Jason Aaron back on the podcast, this time bringing Mahmud Asrar with him. We discuss their fascination with "Oh, No! I'm Shrunk!" stories and why their version required a bloody battleground. Our conversation also ventures into why Bug Wars may be one of Jason Aaron's most personal stories and how Mahmud Asrar challenged some legitimate creepy crawly phobias to bring this tale to the page. This week's podcast begins with a discussion about our "Comics Will Mend Your Heart" 2025 theme and how it relates to the famous Jack Kirby quote, "Kid...comics will break your heart." When and where did Kirby first say it, and what was the quote's original context? We get into it. Bug Wars #1 arrives in comic shops on February 12th. It's written by Jason Aaron, illustrated by Mahmud Asrar, colored by Matthew Wilson, lettered and designed by Becca Carey, and edited by Heather Antos. Consider continuing this conversation with Jason Aaron via his Substack, Instagram, and Bluesky. Please do the same with Mahmud Asrar via his Instagram and Blueksy. IDW Publishing sounds like they're done. Thanks to the Diamond bankruptcy, they might be on the hook to pay Penguin and they don't see much of a path forward. IDW currently publishes Sonic, Star Trek and TMNT. Previously they had the Hasbro licenses, but dropped the ball and those got kicked over to Skybound.

We hope to see you chatting with us on our Discord soon!Interview: Ryan North (STAR TREK LOWER DECKS/WARP YOUR OWN WAY out Oct 22, Fantastic Four, The Rise of Emperor Doom)Ryan, thanks for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast for the second time! You're having the nerdiest of years, with Star Trek Lower Decks/Warp Your Own Way out Oct 22nd, the ongoing Lower Decks #1 out November 13 and Fantastic Four cresting into a huge 2025 year, what has been your favorite nerd thing you created this year?STAR TREK LOWER DECKS/WARP YOUR OWN WAY is a choose-your-own adventure! What is the process of plotting something like this? Anything you learned from Hamlet or Romeo & Juliet that opened the way for new experimentation?About how many “storylines” can someone get out of the graphic novel?Maybe this is sacrilege to ask, but do you have a favorite ending for the graphic novel? Is the STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS ongoing series a direct continuation of the animated show, or taking place at a different period?I've heard that Heather Antos is basically an encyclopedia of Star Trek lore – how invaluable was it to have her as your editor on this project.Footnotes, you're one of the best at them…how does it feel to have them return!?Without spoiling anything, Lower Decks #1 touches on a fun part of Trek's past. Are there any corners of Trek that you haven't explored in comics that you'd love to?There's a lot of science in FF, does Star Trek Lower Decks let you stretch your science legs in different ways? You got to visit with the The Fantastic Four: First Steps cast, how long was the visit and how much did you get to see?Do you get a sense they're sticking to the comics at all?Considering how much science is in your titles, will The Rise of Emperor Doom also be sciencey, or is it all magic all the time? How would the lower decks crew deal with Dr. Doom? Could they withstand his might?Rapid Fire Question Round:Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out?Apples or oranges? What was your first comic?Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? When do you think your style came into its own? What do you think happens when we die?Favorite action movie?Favorite smell?Least favorite smell?Favorite superhero? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you've created or written, who would they be and why?You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it?A genre you want to make more comics in?Describe the rest of your life in 5 words?

We welcome Heather Antos back to the show to help us take our first foray into Star Wars -- a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away -- with the logical starting point: Ewoks: The Battle for Endor! We share nostalgia for watching movies this on TV with (what we would now consider) vintage commercials and talk about how this movie exists at a pivot point in film technology. Joe has lots of questions, like: Do kids still have adventure? Are Ewoks the predecessors to Minions? What's worse: sharing a bedroom or becoming an orphan? Minions? MINIONS??? Heather shares in-universe answers about our Star Wars questions, but also imparts important lessons about its lore. We ask: is this a happy ending? We did it. We've completed our San Diego Comic-Con coverage. Twelve podcasts in August. Too much? Maybe, but no regrets, and there is no better way to wrap up our Comic-Con celebrations than with Star Trek group editor Heather Antos and superstar writer Ryan North discussing Star Trek: Lower Decks and its new mission at IDW Publishing. Since its streaming premiere, we've championed Star Trek: Lower Decks as the most human Trek. While it's wickedly funny, frequently teasing the ultra seriousness in which we hold the franchise, Lower Decks laughs with the characters and concepts, never at them. The show and its showrunner, Mike McMahan, have tremendous reverence for the Star Trekthat's come before, and his love for it shines through every frame. The upcoming fifth and final season, which begins on October 24th, has us feeling a little weepy. However, there's no reason to fret. IDW is relaunching the Star Trek: Lower Decks comic book series with a new number one on November 13th, and on October 22nd, there will also be a brand new graphic novel called Warp Your Own Way. Both are written by Ryan North (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Fantastic Four), and IDW Star Trek group editor Heather Antos oversees it all. At San Diego Comic-Con, we sat down with North and Antos to discuss our mutual admiration for Star Trek: Lower Decks. We talk about its placement within the franchise, what they can do in the comics that McMahan and company cannot accomplish on television, and where this series may take the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos. Also, how does contributing to Star Trek affect their perspective as creators and, well, just as humans? Disney's Tarzan was, as the 6th-highest grossing movie of the year, a big hit. But it also had a giant budget. Made for $130 million, it grossed $171 million domestically and $448 million worldwide.  Tarzan did well with critics, as well. It was nominated for more than 2 dozen different awards, and won the Oscar and Golden Globe for best original song, Phil Collins' “You'll Be in My Heart”.  It holds a an 89 percent Rotten Tomatoes score with more than 100 reviews, and 79 Metacritic score with 27 reviews, putting it right in the middle of the pack of the so-called Disney Renaissance films. But, oddly, this de facto grand finale of the Disney hand-drawn era just doesn't loom as large as the like of The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, or even Hercules. It will, however, always be in the heart (get it?) of our guest, artist and senior editor at IDW, Heather Antos. She joins John and Joey to talk about why Tarzan is great and deserves its seat in the Disney pantheon. Heather is on Twitter @HeatherAntos

Today I've got two amazing comics creators on to chat with me. Comics writer David Booher is a regular to the show at this point and we have a new guest joining him, Michele Abounader. Michele has cooked up a new crowdfunding project on Backerkit called When I Was Young, a 100+ page queer comics anthology featuring short stories of inspiration, advice, and triumph where all profits will be donated to The Trevor Project to benefit LGBTQIA+ youth. David and Michele both are contributing pieces to the project along with some of comics big heavy hitters like Heather Antos, Christopher Cantwell, Stephanie Williams, and Jadzia Axelrod. Michele is playing the jill of all trades role as the editor as well. Each of these stories is deeply personal. When I saw the original solicitation for it, I jumped at the opportunity to support it as a backer and knew I wanted to have Michele on to chat about it. David was a delightful late add who was kind enough to come on to talk about his story Blue illustrated by yeti friend Jack Foster that will be a part of the anthology. We play a Fast & Furious game inspired by a clickbait article from Polygon. Heather submits her resume (and credentials) to become a full-time host of 2 Fast 2 Forever. We read some Fast X-related emails and talk about the Most Dom Moment in Fast X. Email us: family@cageclub.me Visit our Patreon page at patreon.com/2fast2forever.  Show your support at the 2 Fast 2 Forever shop! Extra special shout-out to Ben Milliman, Alex Elonen, Nick Burris, Brian Rodriguez (High School Slumber Party), Justin Kleinman, Michael McGahon, Lane Middleton, Jason Rainey, Wes Hampton, Mike Gallier, Josh Buckley (Whole Lotta Wolves), Michael Moser, and Christian Larson for joining at the “Interpol's Most Wanted” level or above!  Intro music by Nico Vasilo.

And (at 52:55) we look a little deeper at “STARSIGNS” by Saladin Ahmed, Megan Levens, Kelly Fitzpatrick, Shawn Lee, and Heather Antos, available for free at Copper Bottle. First, a warning: I let slip a spoiler for The Book of Boba Fett at around 7:00-7:10, so if you're trying to stay away from those, SORRY and BE FOREWARNED! Skip past that moment at 7:00 if you're keeping ears pure for the Disney+ show's surprises. Also, in the intro I tease some talk about “Fantastic Four” #14-19's arc, “Point of Origin,” but I ran out of time.
