Psalm 42:1As the deer pants for the water brooks,So pants my soul for You, O God.Charles Spurgeon wrote:"As man can bear hunger much longer than he can bear thirst, he may continue without food for days but not without drink. So the psalmist mentions the thirstiest creature and the most ardent of the natural passions. He does not say, 'So I long for my former grandeur,' or, 'So I long for my friend,' but, 'So I long for you, God.' His soul had only one longing, one thirst; and every power and every passion had united itself to that one desire."In this episode, I will share how Psalm 42 and this quote by Spurgeon helped redirect my soul back to the One Thirst above all others. Thirst for God is my answer, my primary goal, and my primary need. All the other thirsts take a lesser place.I will end the episode with another redirecting quote by C.S. Lewis, which inspired the song “Draw Me Near”—which I'll play for you. If you would like to support this podcast with a monthly or one-time donation, thank you!https://www.sherriyoungward.com/supportTo find out about upcoming gatherings and new projects, please join my email list atwww.sherriyoungward.com

Twenty-sixth Sunday after Pentecost Old Testament: Daniel 12:1-3 1“At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book.2Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. Psalm: Psalm 16 1 Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you; *        I have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord,        my good above all other.” 2 All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, *        upon those who are noble among the people. 3 But those who run after other gods *        shall have their troubles multiplied. 4 Their libations of blood I will not offer, *        nor take the names of their gods upon my lips. 5 O Lord, you are my portion and my cup; *        it is you who uphold my lot. 6 My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; *        indeed, I have a goodly heritage. 7 I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; *        my heart teaches me, night after night. 8 I have set the Lord always before me; *        because he is at my right hand I shall not fall. 9 My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; *        my body also shall rest in hope. 10 For you will not abandon me to the grave, *        nor let your holy one see the Pit. 11 You will show me the path of life; *        in your presence there is fullness of joy,        and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. Epistle: Hebrews 10:11-14 (15-18) 19-25 11And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. 12But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, “he sat down at the right hand of God,” 13and since then has been waiting “until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.” 14For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. [15And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, 16“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds,” 17he also adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” 18Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.] 19Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Gospel: Mark 13:1-8 1As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!” 2Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.” 3When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4“Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?” 5Then Jesus began to say to them, “Beware that no one leads you astray. 6Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!' and they will lead many astray. 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birthpangs.

Fifth Sunday after Pentecost The Collect: O Lord, make us have perpetual love and reverence for your holy Name, for you never fail to help and govern those whom you have set upon the sure foundation of your lovingkindness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Old Testament: 1 Samuel 17:(1a, 4-11, 19-23), 32-49 or 1 Samuel 17:57-18:5,10-16 [1Now the Philistines gathered their armies for battle. 4And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. 5He had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze. 6He had greaves of bronze on his legs and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders. 7The shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron; and his shield-bearer went before him. 8He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why have you come out to draw up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. 9If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.” 10And the Philistine said, “Today I defy the ranks of Israel! Give me a man, that we may fight together.” 11When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid. 19Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.20David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with a keeper, took the provisions, and went as Jesse had commanded him. He came to the encampment as the army was going forth to the battle line, shouting the war cry. 21Israel and the Philistines drew up for battle, army against army. 22David left the things in charge of the keeper of the baggage, ran to the ranks, and went and greeted his brothers. 23As he talked with them, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke the same words as before. And David heard him.] 32David said to Saul, “Let no one's heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” 33Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are just a boy, and he has been a warrior from his youth.” 34But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father; and whenever a lion or a bear came, and took a lamb from the flock, 35I went after it and struck it down, rescuing the lamb from its mouth; and if it turned against me, I would catch it by the jaw, strike it down, and kill it.36Your servant has killed both lions and bears; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, since he has defied the armies of the living God.” 37David said, “The Lord, who saved me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will save me from the hand of this Philistine.” So Saul said to David, “Go, and may the Lord be with you!”38Saul clothed David with his armor; he put a bronze helmet on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail. 39David strapped Saul's sword over the armor, and he tried in vain to walk, for he was not used to them. Then David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these; for I am not used to them.” So David removed them. 40Then he took his staff in his hand, and chose five smooth stones from the wadi, and put them in his shepherd's bag, in the pouch; his sling was in his hand, and he drew near to the Philistine. 41The Philistine came on and drew near to David, with his shield-bearer in front of him. 42When the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was only a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance. 43The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and to the wild animals of the field.”45But David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword and spear and javelin; but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46This very day the Lordwill deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head; and I will give the dead bodies of the Philistine army this very day to the birds of the air and to the wild animals of the earth, so that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47and that all this assembly may know that the Lord does not save by sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord's and he will give you into our hand.” 48When the Philistine drew nearer to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49David put his hand in his bag, took out a stone, slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead; the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face down on the ground. or 57On David's return from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with the head of the Philistine in his hand.58Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.” 5When David had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was bound to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.2Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father's house. 3Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. 4Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that he was wearing, and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt. 5David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him; as a result, Saul set him over the army. And all the people, even the servants of Saul, approved. 10The next day an evil spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house, while David was playing the lyre, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand; 11and Saul threw the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David eluded him twice. 12Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul. 13So Saul removed him from his presence, and made him a commander of a thousand; and David marched out and came in, leading the army. 14David had success in all his undertakings; for the Lord was with him. 15When Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in awe of him. 16But all Israel and Judah loved David; for it was he who marched out and came in leading them. Psalm: Psalm 9:9-20 or Psalm 133 9 The Lord will be a refuge for the oppressed, *        a refuge in time of trouble. 10 Those who know your Name will put their trust in you, *        for you never forsake those who seek you, O Lord. 11 Sing praise to the Lord who dwells in Zion; *        proclaim to the peoples the things he has done. 12 The Avenger of blood will remember them; *        he will not forget the cry of the afflicted. 13 Have pity on me, O Lord; *        see the misery I suffer from those who hate me,        O you who lift me up from the gate of death; 14 So that I may tell of all your praises    and rejoice in your salvation *        in the gates of the city of Zion. 15 The ungodly have fallen into the pit they dug, *        and in the snare they set is their own foot caught. 16 The Lord is known by his acts of justice; *        the wicked are trapped in the works of their own hands. 17 The wicked shall be given over to the grave, *        and also all the peoples that forget God. 18 For the needy shall not always be forgotten, *        and the hope of the poor shall not perish for ever. 19 Rise up, O Lord, let not the ungodly have the upper hand; *        let them be judged before you. 20 Put fear upon them, O Lord; *        let the ungodly know they are but mortal. or 1 Oh, how good and pleasant it is, *        when brethren live together in unity! 2 It is like fine oil upon the head *        that runs down upon the beard, 3 Upon the beard of Aaron, *        and runs down upon the collar of his robe. 4 It is like the dew of Hermon *        that falls upon the hills of Zion. 5 For there the Lord has ordained the blessing: *        life for evermore. Old Testament: Job 38:1-11 1Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: 2“Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. 4“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. 5Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? 6On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone 7when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? 8“Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb?— 9when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, 10and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, 11and said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stopped'? Psalm: Psalm 107:1-3, 23-32 1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, *        and his mercy endures for ever. 2 Let all those whom the Lord has redeemed proclaim *        that he redeemed them from the hand of the foe. 3 He gathered them out of the lands; *        from the east and from the west,        from the north and from the south. 23 Some went down to the sea in ships *        and plied their trade in deep waters; 24 They beheld the works of the Lord *        and his wonders in the deep. 25 Then he spoke, and a stormy wind arose, *        which tossed high the waves of the sea. 26 They mounted up to the heavens and fell back to the depths; *        their hearts melted because of their peril. 27 They reeled and staggered like drunkards *        and were at their wits' end. 28 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,        and he delivered them from their distress. 29 He stilled the storm to a whisper *        and quieted the waves of the sea. 30 Then were they glad because of the calm, *        and he brought them to the harbor they were bound for. 31 Let them give thanks to the Lord for his mercy *        and the wonders he does for his children. 32 Let them exalt him in the congregation of the people *        and praise him in the council of the elders. Epistle: 2 Corinthians 6:1-13 1As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. 2For he says, “At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you.” See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! 3We are putting no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry,4but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, 5beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; 6by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, 7truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; 8in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; 9as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see—we are alive; as punished, and yet not killed; 10as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything. 11We have spoken frankly to you Corinthians; our heart is wide open to you. 12There is no restriction in our affections, but only in yours. 13In return—I speak as to children—open wide your hearts also. Gospel: Mark 4:35-41 35On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Sermons – New Life in Christ Church | Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania

Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the grave, ahistorical reality that has implications for our faith. John 9 1As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud 7and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. 8The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” 9Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” 10So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed and received my sight.” 12They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.” 13They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. 17So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.” 18 The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight 19and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” 22(His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.) 23Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” 24So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.” 25He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” 28And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” 30The man answered, “Why, this is an amazing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. 32Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. 33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out. 35Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” 37Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.” 38He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.

I'm against organized religion. ·       7. Church people hate women/gays/divorced people/ethnic groups/interracial couples/insert group here ·       6. I don't believe in God. ·       5. Church people are so judgmental. ·       4. I'm just not being fed ·       3. Ten years ago someone at some church somewhere was really awful to me.  ·       2. I feel like I need to get right with God before I can come to church ·       1. Churches just want my money ·       1.  Church is not an institution or a business – it is the body of Christ.  ·       When people think of church, they think, “Those people act just like Jesus.” ·       2.  Church is not a denomination. ·       Every church that is really a church focuses on Jesus. ·       3.  Church is not a worship service or a bunch of programs.  ·       The church body gathers to worship; the church body offers opportunities for people to know Jesus, know community, grow character, and to go share.  ·       4.  Jesus wants every believer to belong to a local church body.  ·       Acts 2:44 -  All the believers were together and had everything in common.            ·     Being a Christian means you follow Jesus.  ·       If you are not part of a local church body, you are missing a key next step in following Jesus. ·       1As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.  ·       Live a life worthy…  ·      You have received a calling.  ·      2 Be completely humble… ·      …and gentle; ·      William Barclay – “A gentle person is so self-controlled he is always angry at the right time but never angry at the wrong time ·     …be patient… ·     John Chrysostom – “To be patient means having a wide and big soul.” ·       …bearing with one another in love ·        Your character (and mine) determines the character of the church ·       3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit… ·       … through the bond of peace.  ·       Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you.  I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be trouble and do not be afraid.  John 14:27 ·       Is the church of Jesus known for peace? ·        4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called;  ·       5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism ·       …6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all ·       If you are a believer, you need to belong to a local church body.  ·      If you are not a follower of Jesus, find a church that looks most like Jesus and see who Jesus really is.   ·      There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; One Lord, one faith, one baptism; One God and Father of all, who is overall and through all, and in all. Life Group Resources Starter Question:  Please share a time when being part of a church was a special part of your life. 1.     Read Ephesians 4:1 2.     In your opinion, what does it means to be called by Jesus? 3.     Read Ephesians 4:2 4.     Which of these character traits comes most naturally to you?  Which is a challenge? 5.     Read Ephesians 4:3 6.     Please offer some practical suggestions about how to keep the unity of the Spirit in the church? 7.     Read Ephesians 4:4 8.     If the church is to be the body of Christ, how are we doing in being one body, having one Spirit, and having one hope?  Please grade ADBC on a scale of A-F and share the reason for your answer. 9.     Read Ephesians 4:5, which speaks about the church having one leader, one faith, and one shared experience (baptism). 10.     In your opinion, what would happen if a church did not have these three things? 11.     Read Ephesians 4:6 12.     What does it mean that our Heavenly Father is over all, through all, and in all?

Fourth Sunday in Lent The Collect: Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Old Testament: 1 Samuel 16:1-13 1The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” 2Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.' 3Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.” 4Samuel did what the Lordcommanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, “Do you come peaceably?” 5He said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord's anointed is now before the Lord.” 7But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 8Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 9Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 10Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.” 11Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.” 12He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.” 13Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lordcame mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah. Psalm: Psalm 23 1 The Lord is my shepherd; *        I shall not be in want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures *        and leads me beside still waters. 3 He revives my soul *        and guides me along right pathways for his Name's sake. 4 Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,   I shall fear no evil; *        for you are with me;        your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; *        you have anointed my head with oil,        and my cup is running over. 6 Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, *        and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Epistle: Ephesians 5:8-14 8For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light— 9for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true. 10Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. 11Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly; 13but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Sleeper, awake! Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Gospel: John 9:1-41 1As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God's works might be revealed in him. 4We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. 5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man's eyes, 7saying to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). Then he went and washed and came back able to see. 8The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar began to ask, “Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” 9Some were saying, “It is he.” Others were saying, “No, but it is someone like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” 10But they kept asking him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.' Then I went and washed and received my sight.” 12They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.” 13They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind.14Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15Then the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put mud on my eyes. Then I washed, and now I see.” 16Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not observe the sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And they were divided. 17So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him? It was your eyes he opened.” He said, “He is a prophet.” 18The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight 19and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20His parents answered, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;21but we do not know how it is that now he sees, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” 22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue. 23Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” 24So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and they said to him, “Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.” 25He answered, “I do not know whether he is a sinner. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.” 26They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” 28Then they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.” 30The man answered, “Here is an astonishing thing! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31We know that God does not listen to sinners, but he does listen to one who worships him and obeys his will. 32Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind. 33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34They answered him, “You were born entirely in sins, and are you trying to teach us?” And they drove him out. 35Jesus heard that they had driven him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36He answered, “And who is he, sir? Tell me, so that I may believe in him.” 37Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he.” 38He said, “Lord, I believe.” And he worshiped him. 39Jesus said, “I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind.” 40Some of the Pharisees near him heard this and said to him, “Surely we are not blind, are we?” 41Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, ‘We see,' your sin remains.

Ash Wednesday The Collect: Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Old Testament: Joel 2:1-2,12-17 or Isaiah 58:1-12 1Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming, it is near— 2a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness! Like blackness spread upon the mountains a great and powerful army comes; their like has never been from of old, nor will be again after them in ages to come. 12Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; 13rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing. 14Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain offering and a drink offering for the Lord, your God? 15Blow the trumpet in Zion; sanctify a fast; call a solemn assembly; 16gather the people. Sanctify the congregation; assemble the aged; gather the children, even infants at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room, and the bride her canopy. 17Between the vestibule and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep. Let them say, “Spare your people, O Lord, and do not make your heritage a mockery, a byword among the nations. Why should it be said among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?'” or 1Shout out, do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their rebellion, to the house of Jacob their sins. 2Yet day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments, they delight to draw near to God. 3“Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?” Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day, and oppress all your workers. 4Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high. 5Is such the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? 6Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? 7Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? 8Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. 9Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am. If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil,10if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday. 11The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail. 12Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in. Psalm: Psalm 103 or 103:8-14 [1 Bless the Lord, O my soul, *        and all that is within me, bless his holy Name. 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, *        and forget not all his benefits. 3 He forgives all your sins *        and heals all your infirmities; 4 He redeems your life from the grave *        and crowns you with mercy and loving-kindness; 5 He satisfies you with good things, *        and your youth is renewed like an eagle's. 6 The Lord executes righteousness *        and judgment for all who are oppressed. 7 He made his ways known to Moses *        and his works to the children of Israel.] 8 The Lord is full of compassion and mercy, *        slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 He will not always accuse us, *        nor will he keep his anger for ever. 10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, *        nor rewarded us according to our wickedness. 11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, *        so is his mercy great upon those who fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, *        so far has he removed our sins from us. 13 As a father cares for his children, *        so does the Lord care for those who fear him. 14 For he himself knows whereof we are made; *        he remembers that we are but dust. [15 Our days are like the grass; *        we flourish like a flower of the field; 16 When the wind goes over it, it is gone, *        and its place shall know it no more. 17 But the merciful goodness of the Lord endures for ever                                on those who fear him, *        and his righteousness on children's children; 18 On those who keep his covenant *        and remember his commandments and do them. 19 The Lord has set his throne in heaven, *        and his kingship has dominion over all. 20 Bless the Lord, you angels of his,     you mighty ones who do his bidding, *        and hearken to the voice of his word. 21 Bless the Lord, all you his hosts, *        you ministers of his who do his will. 22 Bless the Lord, all you works of his,     in all places of his dominion; *        bless the Lord, O my soul.] Epistle: 2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:10 20We entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.21For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 1As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. Gospel: Matthew 6:1-6,16-21 1“Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2“So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 3But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 5“And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.6But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 16“And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. 17But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 19“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; 20but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

For those following global cricket this year, you'd have noticed the number of “upsets” we have seen at the T20 World Cup and a few others outside the global tournaments. This led me to think about what some of these upsets would mean for the respective teams and the legacy they would lead to. So I got round to talking with Shounak and Sandeep about this and we went down nostalgia lane to recall some of the more memorable wins by unfancied teams in modern cricketing history and what mark they left on us personally and in cricket in general. And in doing so, we may end up upsetting a few people or re-open old wounds, but that is not our intention. Please have a support person with you if some of these memories causes distress. And ohh, we also talk about a potential new format for the World Cups so as to protect certain teams.Links to a book and YouTube video mentioned in the episode as below -Video link for Netherlands beating Australia in 1964.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKzfnkXBuzkAnd the book mentioned is -Evita burned down our Pavilion : A Cricket Odyssey through Latin America by Timothy Abraham and James Coyne. It is available on Kindle and via Amazon at this stage. https://www.amazon.com.au/Evita-Burned-Down-Our-Pavilion-ebook/dp/B07TXNM2VS/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1671358944&sr=8-1As usual, credit to Noman and Umangi for the cover art for the podcast.

Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost The Collect: O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Old Testament: Haggai 1:15b-2:9 1In the second year of King Darius, in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the prophet Haggai, saying: 2Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, and say, 3Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Is it not in your sight as nothing? 4Yet now take courage, O Zerubbabel, says the Lord; take courage, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; take courage, all you people of the land, says the Lord; work, for I am with you, says the Lord of hosts, 5according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My spirit abides among you; do not fear.6For thus says the Lord of hosts: Once again, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land; 7and I will shake all the nations, so that the treasure of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with splendor, says the Lord of hosts. 8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the Lord of hosts. 9The latter splendor of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts; and in this place I will give prosperity, says the Lord of hosts. Psalm: Psalm 145:1-5, 18-21 or Psalm 98 1 I will exalt you, O God my King, *        and bless your Name for ever and ever. 2 Every day will I bless you *        and praise your Name for ever and ever. 3 Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; *        there is no end to his greatness. 4 One generation shall praise your works to another *        and shall declare your power. 5 I will ponder the glorious splendor of your majesty *        and all your marvelous works. 18 The Lord is righteous in all his ways *        and loving in all his works. 19 The Lord is near to those who call upon him, *        to all who call upon him faithfully. 20 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; *        he hears their cry and helps them. 21 The Lord preserves all those who love him, *        but he destroys all the wicked. or 1 Sing to the Lord a new song, *        for he has done marvelous things. 2 With his right hand and his holy arm *        has he won for himself the victory. 3 The Lord has made known his victory; *        his righteousness has he openly shown in                                 the sight of the nations. 4 He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to                                the house of Israel, *        and all the ends of the earth have seen the                                victory of our God. 5 Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; *        lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. 6 Sing to the Lord with the harp, *        with the harp and the voice of song. 7 With trumpets and the sound of the horn *        shout with joy before the King, the Lord. 8 Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, *        the lands and those who dwell therein. 9 Let the rivers clap their hands, *        and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord,        when he comes to judge the earth. 10 In righteousness shall he judge the world *        and the peoples with equity. Epistle: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17 1As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters, 2not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. 3Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless one is revealed, the one destined for destruction. 4He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. 5Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you? 13But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. 16Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, 17comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word. Gospel: Luke 20:27-38 27Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to him28and asked him a question, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. 29Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; 30then the second 31and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless.32Finally the woman also died. 33In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her.” 34Jesus said to them, “Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage;35but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.36Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. 37And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive.”

A Bajans Silhouette is an abstract conversation which captures darkened shapes and outlines of something while a shadow on the other hand is the darkened shape that occurs because of a light source being blocked seemingly underpins A Bajans Silhouette. This nuance is not only exclusive  to Barbados' cultural geographical space. But silhouette  occupies the precincts of every culture simply because  a silhouette is a shadow.  Equally, regardless of the outline or shape of the shadow is the edge of the visible object, or the image of the visible object, if we are thinking of shadows cast onto surfaces according to springer.com.The afore said implies regardless of ethnicity, orientation, or the geographical space we occupy silhouette is practice  consciously and unconsciously .It is because of the aforesaid philosophical nuances I was motivated  to capture Bajans Silhouettes  © 2022 ISBN978-976-9689-3-8-1 in  13 chapters and verbalise in ISBN978-976-9689-3-8-1 and  Podcast 158.Support the show

1As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father's house. 3Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. 4And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt. 5And David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him, so that Saul set him over the men of war. And this was good in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul's servants. 6As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments.a 7And the women sang to one another as they celebrated, “Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” 8And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but the kingdom?” 9And Saul eyed David from that day on. 10The next day a harmful spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house while David was playing the lyre, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand. 11And Saul hurled the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David evaded him twice. 12Saul was afraid of David because the LORD was with him but had departed from Saul. 13So Saul removed him from his presence and made him a commander of a thousand. And he went out and came in before the people. 14And David had success in all his undertakings, for the LORD was with him. 15And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in fearful awe of him. 16But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them. 17Then Saul said to David, “Here is my elder daughter Merab. I will give her to you for a wife. Only be valiant for me and fight the LORD's battles.” For Saul thought, “Let not my hand be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.” 18And David said to Saul, “Who am I, and who are my relatives, my father's clan in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?” 19But at the time when Merab, Saul's daughter, should have been given to David, she was given to Adriel the Meholathite for a wife. 20Now Saul's daughter Michal loved David. And they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. 21Saul thought, “Let me give her to him, that she may be a snare for him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David a second time,b “You shall now be my son-in-law.” 22And Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David in private and say, ‘Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you. Now then become the king's son-in-law.'” 23And Saul's servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, “Does it seem to you a little thing to become the king's son-in-law, since I am a poor man and have no reputation?” 24And the servants of Saul told him, “Thus and so did David speak.” 25Then Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king desires no bride-price except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, that he may be avenged of the king's enemies.'” Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. 26And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's son-in-law. Before the time had expired, 27David arose and went, along with his men, and killed two hundred of the Philistines. And David brought their foreskins, which were given in full number to the king, that he might become the king's son-in-law. And Saul gave him his daughter Michal for a wife. 28But when Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal, Saul's daughter, loved him, 29Saul was even more afraid of David. So Saul was David's enemy continually. 30Then the commanders of the Philistines came out to battle, and as often as they came out David had more success than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed.

Today's message discusses faith, the course in faith we take when we radically love and trust God. No matter what circumstances we are surrounded by, no matter what obstacles come our way, no matter what happens, we can CHOOSE to love, trust and serve the founder and perfector of our FAITH. We must believe in Him and know great faith is shown as we wait for the ultimate fulfillment of His promises. **** Welcome to Celebrating God's Grace, a Women World Leader's Podcast. I am your host, Rusanne Carole, born in Louisiana, USA ,now living in Australia. This is a podcast that comes to you through a women's global ministry, Women World Leaders. The WWL ministry began 4 years ago with people gathering in a home studying and discussing the Word of God. As followers of Jesus Christ we are commissioned with the call to go out into all the world, and share the gospel to the entire human race! We may be called to GO and influence our friends, families, our children. We may be called to GO into our communities. And we may be called to GO into other nations.  God's power and desire to reach the ends of the earth is evident in what He has done through the beautiful women of God who serve in WWL and the supporters who give, whether in donations, love gifts and prayer.  We are privileged here at WWL that He has called us to be His army in sharing the love and grace message of our Lord Jesus Christ and we celebrate and are constantly amazed that He is allowing us to reach the globe. Thanks to all of you that listen and support us!   I hope you are well & blessed and enjoy this time we have together and if you believe this message will speak to someone you know and help support and encourage them we ask that you share it. We are called in the body of Christ to uplift and support our brothers and sisters.  Each week we bring you podcasts where we share women's testimonies, have teaching in the Word and today in our segment of “Celebrating God's Grace” I'd like to speak to you about FAITH. A big subject and so much could delve into but for today I want to look at:   How we are never alone and we have supernatural support. We must believe, even when we are walking through the most horrific trials. I didn't say it's easy, but it is possible… WITH GOD!   Hebrews 11:6 (TPT) tells us that “without faith living within us it would be impossible to please God. For we come to God in faith knowing that he is real and that he rewards the faith of those who passionately seek Him.” Verse 7 says “faith opened Noah's heart to receive revelation and warnings from God about what was coming”. Even things that hadn't been seen, for rain had not yet even come upon the earth. WOW! He worked diligently for several decades building what God had told him without really knowing what exactly for. How many people would have possibly ridiculed him or even made fun of him? “What in the world is this guy doing building this HUGE construction? What a waste of time and effort?”I'm sure he might have had moments he may of questioned, what am I doing? But he focused on God and was obedient to what God had asked of him. Will we be?   He was FAITHFUL. Genesis 6:22 says Noah did everything just as God commanded him.   Sometimes it may be difficult to hear what God is telling us to do. This is where it is important to be in God's Word every day. He is always speaking to us. We must often take time to be still to hear and trust His timing to bring us what He wants to tell us.   The greatness of faith is not to be judged on how many of God's promises you receive or great wealth or health you experience. The greatness of faith is shown in proportion to how long you can wait for the fulfillment of a promise. Greatness of faith is not proven in what is received, but in how long a person can wait without wavering to receive.   Many things in our lives have not come to pass that our heart so desperately desires! It may be healing for a loved one or for ourselves, it may be a healing for a broken relationship or marriage, or seeing those we love and care about being saved and living a life for Christ.     Waiting…. Wanting… Wishing.. things would happen!   How do we still passionately seek Him? How do we ride the COURSE OF FAITH, especially when “things” aren't going as we would desire and life's battles continue to come. How do we remain faithful servants?   Faith seems to come easy when “things” are going well. It's when life gets tough and challenging and our faith is tested that can be really trying.   This year, 2022, it seems to me that for a lot of people I know things are “heavy”. Many I talk to are dealing with quite difficult things in their life and the lives of their loved ones, including myself.   As you get older and experience life as a follower of Christ I believe you start to see it's about faith, yes, but it's really about remaining FAITHFUL NO MATTER WHAT THE WORLD THROWS AT YOU!  Nothing in life remains the same and there are seasons of many highs and lows. It's about:   Keeping our eyes on the FOUNDER AND PERFECTOR of our faith. It's a COURSE IN FAITH we take every day.   Hebrews 12:1-3  (TPT) tells us:   1As for us, we have all of these great witnesses who encircle us like clouds. So we must let go of every wound that has pierced us and the sin we so easily fall into. Then we will be able to run life's marathon race with passion and determination, for the path has been already marked out before us. 2We look away from the natural realm and we focus our attention and expectation  onto Jesus who birthed faith within us and who leads us forward into faith's perfection. His example is this: Because his heart was focused on the joy of knowing that you would be his, he endured the agony of the cross and conquered its humiliation, and now sits exalted at the right hand of the throne of God! 3So consider carefully how Jesus faced such intense opposition from sinners who opposed their own souls, so that you won't become worn down and cave in under life's pressures.     God will NEVER abandon YOU! We are to be hopeful while waiting We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses     I recently attended some biblical training, and the pastor/teacher (over 40 years in ministry) shared lots of stories. One story he shared has stuck with me and I continue to reflect on it.   He was in his office one early morning making last minute preparations to his notes for a wedding that he would perform later that day. A wedding, a glorious and happy celebration of two people very much in love. Not many things are more beautiful then celebrating the union of two people in love and embarking on life together!   The phone rang with the devasting news of the death of a young man, a member of the church he pastored. It was the young son of a dear friend. He was devasted but he knew he had to be the one to tell the family. He got in the car and drove to his friends' home. His friends' wife opened the door welcomed him in, “What are you doing here? You should be preparing your message? He smiled and received the invitation to take a seat and wait on her husband who would return any minute. When his friend walked in the door, he greeted the pastor, his friend, and said something similar that his wife said to him, “What are you doing here? You've got a wedding at the church tonight, right?”   He looked at him and said, “I have some very sad news, your son was in a car accident a few hours ago and died.” What happened next the pastor said would stay with him forever. His friend, the father of the son who had unexpectantly died that day, dropped to his knees and said, ‘You are a faithful God and I will choose to trust you and praise You through it all.”

The Gospel of John 8-14 Part Two: Believing Is Seeing By Louie Marsh, 5-1-2022   Slides -last one Believing is seeing book cover.   THE 1ST ENCOUNTER:   “1As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth.” (John 9:1, ESV)   What They Saw:   The Disciples saw a theological CONUNDRUM.   Theodicy is the technical term for trying to understand God and evil.   Jesus saw a HURTING soul.   What They Said:   Disciples: Who's FAULT is this?   “2And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”” (John 9:2, ESV)   Jesus – God is MOVING here!   “3Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.” (John 9:3–4, ESV)   What It Means:   1) God is not PUNISHING ME for my sins.   “1There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? 3No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? 5No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”” (Luke 13:1–5, ESV)   “20The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.” (Ezekiel 18:20, ESV)   Why Bad Things Happen: Fallen World- Satan- My bad decisions No bodies' fault!   THE REACTION:   1) God's work always stirs up TROUBLE!   “16Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. 17So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.”    18The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight 19and asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.”   22(His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.) 23Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” 24So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”” (John 9:16–24, ESV)   2) My TESTIMONY is my best witness.   “25He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. 33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”    34They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out.” (John 9:25–34, ESV)   THE 2ND ENCOUNTER:   1) I need to be TEACHABLE.   “35Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” 36He answered, “And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” 37Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and it is he who is speaking to you.”” (John 9:35–37, ESV)   2) True spiritual knowledge results in WORSHIPPING Jesus.   “38He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.” (John 9:38, ESV)   3) Knowledge results in either FAITH or JUDGMENT.  “39Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” 40Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, “Are we also blind?” 41Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see,' your guilt remains.” (John 9:39–41, ESV)

Scripture For Today:2 Thessalonians 1:3“We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing.”Giving Thanks pt 1As we are now in the season of “Thanksgiving” here in the United States, I wanted to take a few days to share my thoughts, based on Bible Scriptures, about “Thanksgiving.”  Let's just do a quick history lesson of sorts, about the REAL Thanksgiving… Way, way back, in 1623, three years AFTER the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth, Mass., this celebration was started to give thanks to God for the provision of that year.  You see, it was a tough going the first two years… The life and voyage the Pilgrims experienced was tough. They lost over half of the people they started, the winters were brutal, and they would have starved to death but for the Indians who were willing to help them out. The Pilgrims had a choice to make. They could give thanks to God for the fact they were alive and functioning. They could have cursed God for the fact they lost well over half of the people they left England with. Or they could have cursed God because they did not land in FLORIDA! The other choice they had was to just forget about what God did for them and just live out their lives. They chose to give thanks. Even though they had a lot they could complain about, they chose to give thanks. They knew who to give the glory to. We can go through life complaining or we can spend our lives giving thanks! We can relate this to the story in the Bible of the Ten Lepers that were healed by Jesus. Turn to Luke 17:11-19… Sometimes, we read this story too quickly. So I am actually going to take a few days to walk through this with you.  We start with ten men who have the worst disease of their day. The physical ramifications are horrendous. Leprosy attacks the body, leaving sores, missing fingers, missing toes, damaged limbs. In many cases, the initial pain of leprosy gives way to something more terrible than that - a loss of sensation in nerve endings, leading to more damage to more body parts. The disease can take 30 years to run its course, and in that time span, entire limbs can simply fall off. It is, assuredly, a most horrible disease. We have nearly an impossible task in trying to fathom what it was like 2,000 years ago, when medical treatment as we know it today was almost non-existent. But the emotional pain of the lepers was actually worse than the physical pain. Be forcibly separated from their loved ones…was probably the toughest part.   The loved ones would come and give them food, but they had to stay far away and leave it for them. Then the leper could approach and eat it. But often, especially if they were disabled, other lepers would come and eat it before they arrived. I know I'm about out of time for today.  So let me close with this… These 10 lepers had heard about the miracles of Jesus. If there was anyone that could help them, it was Him.  So, they asked Him to heal them. And He did.  Scripture says as “they went their way” to show themselves to the Priests, ONE turned around and came back to give thanks to Jesus. One. And we are still talking about him to this day. We never hear about the other nine. Nothing. But we still talk about the ONE. So, in this season of Thanksgiving, please STOP and, just like the Pilgrims – and just like the ONE leper, make a decision to GIVE THANKS to the Lord for what He has provided. It may not be anywhere near what you were hoping to have reaped this past year. But you still can give Him thanks for what He has provided.   And that is all that really matters… Happy Thanksgiving… Let's Pray! Scripture For Today:Exodus 8:29“Moses answered, “As soon as I leave you, I will pray to the Lord, and tomorrow the flies will leave Pharaoh and his officials and his people. Only let Pharaoh be sure that he does not act deceitfully again by not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the Lord.”” How to Interpret Scripture pt 1As we were studying the past several sessions on what various Apostle's had to say about prayer, we also learned we had to take the scriptures in context. You cannot take a scripture out of the setting it was written in and try to make it say something that contradicts what the rest of the Bible says, right? There is one major way we can learn to interpret Scripture that will almost always work. Are you ready to learn it? We need to interpret Scripture – IN LIGHT OF OTHER SCRIPTURES! Amazing! Right? What you need to do is look up all of the scripture references you can find that talk about the problem or situation you are facing. You've heard me talk on this before in laying out a Prayer of Petition, right? When we put all of the relevant verses together, then something powerful will start to happen… They all start to support, amplify and clarify one another! They will all fit together and actually bring clarity and a special anointing on the verses as you pray them. Amen! Isn't that what you would normally want when studying God's Word?  Too many times, someone will read “a verse” in the Bible and suddenly have a great “revelation.” They will build an entire belief system around ONE VERSE. The problem with that is when you see other scriptures that reference the same thing, but do not say the same thing as your “favorite” verse, you're in trouble. You either ignore one and cling to the other – or cling to one and ignore ALL the others that may disagree with you. For example, Mark 16:17-18 discuss “These signs shall follow those that believe…” and then it says, “…and they shall take up serpents…”  There have been some people that actually believe they need to be a snake handler in order to demonstrate their faith. And some people have died in the process. Amen! I hate snakes. I will not handle one, period! But, besides that point, that verse does not create a specific command to handle snakes, like some would interpret that. Paul was bitten by a snake by accident. He did not intentionally handle the snake, right?  So that means, he had a RIGHT (a scriptural and Spiritual RIGHT) to believe and stand on Mark 16 for his healing. Do you want further proof?  Name ONE disciple or Apostle that handled snakes to PROVE they had Faith.  You can't! There is not ONE example! Amen! Do you see how some people would take a verse out of context with NO support from any other scripture in the Bible? That is why you need to follow the Biblical Law of Bible Interpretation – which says that Scripture is to be interpreted in Light of other Scriptures! Amen!  How simple is that? If you understand this now – shout AMEN SOMEBODY!  Glory to God! Let's Pray!  Please subscribe to this podcast, leave us a quick 5 star review on Apple Podcasts to help us grow and be sure to visit our website for more information on our ministry: https://podcastersforchrist.com/ (https://podcastersforchrist.com). What a way to launch back into recording after a looong break for the summer. Sal Mayweather took the time to sit down with us to talk all things counter economy. Sal's appearances on podcasts and his presence on social media has fascinated us for quite a while. We were in talks with him to come on the show for some time and through scheduling conflicts and our hibernation, it kept getting postponed. We finally got to connect and it was a bonus that he just released his book, Anti-Politics (a #1 best seller in Anarchy on Amazon). We started with a dabble into the love affair with Mac Dre and then dove right into what Agorism is and how gray and black markets could quite possibly be the answer to thwarting the new religion of corporatism. Of course we mixed in a little crypto and 3d printer talk to round things out. The book is probably the best intro to Agorism I can find. Sal has spend many years and countless hours sifting through the written thoughts of leaders within the agorist movement and compiled the best of the best in a one stop shop called Anti-Politics. Support Sal. Find all his social media links, his podcast (The Agora), and his posts on his website. Take the time to explore it. It comes across very minimal, but is loaded with info.https://www.saltheagorist.com/https://agorathreads.com/If you're looking for a 3d printer, he sells them at https://3dprintergobrrr.com. The only spot for 3d printers that doesn't require some sort of KYC. Buy Sal's book, Anti-Politics. Don't sleep on it. I've long said the only way for music radio to survive is by bringing personality back and differentiating itself from Spotify, Pandora, and other streaming services.  We've actually seen some movement on this front, with some stations going back to two-person afternoon shows.  Even SiriusXM seems to be adding more DJ's to their Pop2K, Pop Rocks, and other channels. Sadly, Audacy, the second biggest radio company in the country, seems to be doing the opposite.  They eliminated a boat-load of CHR, or pop, radio DJ's at the end of last week - this after doing the same previously with country and alternative.  Now, a handful of DJ's will be on double-digit stations across the country.A disclaimer.  Middays for much of the country will be done by Julia, who is a friend of mine. I worked with her at Amp Radio here in Detroit and consider her to be one of the most creative people I worked with in my 15 year radio career.  So if you're Julia, and they say hey, we want to syndicate you nationally, that's a no-brainer.  No ill will toward her. I guarantee Julia's show will have great content for the stations she's on, maybe even more compelling than the former local DJ's in some cases.  But more radio people are out of work, and there's more connections to local communities that are gone.  For Audacy, It's a great way to cut costs when you're moving all your resources to digital, but it doesn't bode well for the future of radio. On to this week's podcasting news. There's a new social audio app that focuses on short form content, called "Racket." It speaks to a larger trend in media toward shorter stuff.  Think about the recent success of TikTok and Instagram.  How does this translate to podcasting?  Well, maybe shorter episodes are the way to go. You can always go too long on an episode, but can you really be too short? Back to the old radio cliche: Leave 'em wanting more.  https://www.theverge.com/2021/7/16/22570683/audio-short-form-podcast-app-racket-beamsAuttomatic, the company that owns Wordpress, has bought Podcast listening app  Pocketcasts - makes me wonder if that means easier integrations for podcast listening through websites. https://wordpress.com/blog/2021/07/16/popular-podcast-app-pocket-casts-joins-automattic/If you still want to use Apple Podcasts as your listening app of choice, do yourself, and podcast creators a solid. Disciple Up Episode 202 Do I Have a Soul or Am I a Soul? Louie Marsh, 3-10-2021   Intro:   This episode sparked by an e-mail from a listener named John, who wrote:   Please check out my biggest and best book – Everyday in the Spirit - https://tinyurl.com/3fct42zn   I was listening to a podcast called "The Bible Project" and the guys on there bring up a point about the word in Hebrew that is translated into English as "soul" doesn't really mean what we think. They say we are translating it wrong and that we don't have a soul if you translate the word correctly it means the throat. The gateway to your innermost part of your body. I am confused about what that means as far as if I go to heaven or not when I die or what   Great question and indicative of a lot of what some people are saying these days about the soul and after life. So on this episode we're going to dive in and check out what some scholars say about this and how in the end the Bible Project guys and I agree, but we disagree with how to get there.   Link are in the show notes to what I'll be referencing as well as a link to the Bible Project so you can listen and decide for yourself.   Links:   Exegetical Fallacies by D.A. Carson, Baker Books - https://tinyurl.com/25635e3z   Commentary on the Old Testament by Keil-Delitzch, - https://tinyurl.com/pbdyyach   The Bible Project; https://www.stitcher.com/show/the-bible-project   Bible Project Episode Description (bold & underlining is mine) You Are A Soul This is our first episode related to our new word studies video on the Hebrew word “Nephesh” which often gets translated as “soul” in English bibles. In Hebrew the most basic meaning of the word is “throat.” Which seems weird to us. So how did we get “soul” from “throat”? Tim and Jon discuss. In the first part of the episode (0-12:30), Tim and Jon outline where the word “soul” comes from (Old English), and why most people think that a core teaching of the Bible is people “having souls.” Jon asks how much you can really separate the ideas of a person's “mind, soul, and body.” In the second part of the episode (12:30-41:20), Tim explains that the Hebrew word “Nephesh” is an extremely common word in the Hebrew Old Testament. It occurs over 700 times, but less than 10% of the time is it translated as “soul.” It also gets translated as “life”, “heart”, “you”, “people” and several other words. Tim outlines some famous verses in the Old Testament that use the word soul. Like Psalm 42 “ As the deer pants...My soul thirsts for you” the original meaning is Hebrew is “my throat thirsts for you.”   Tim explains that the word Nephesh is designed to show the essential physicality of a person. Whereas “soul” connotes the non-physicality of a person. In the third part of the episode (41:20-end), Tim says “Nephesh” isn't just used to describe humans, but also used to describe animals and what the land produced in Genesis. “And God said ‘Let the waters teem with living Nephesh.'” The bottom line, biblically, is that people don't have souls. They are souls. They don't have “nephesh” they are “nephesh.” And the ultimate hope for Christians is not a disembodied existence living as souls, but an embodied existence living in their Nephesh. Life Usage Number: 1 Part Of Speech: Noun Strong's Number:  Original Word: ‏נֶפֶשׁ‎, nepesh Usage Notes: "soul; self; life; person; heart." This is a very common term in both ancient and modern Semitic languages. It occurs over 780 times in the Old Testament and is evenly distributed in all periods of the text with a particularly high frequency in poetic passages. The basic meaning is apparently related to the rare verbal form, nāpash. The noun refers to the essence of life, the act of breathing, taking breath. However, from that concrete concept, a number of more abstract meanings were developed. In its primary sense the noun appears in its first occurrence in Gen. 1:20: "the moving creature that hath life," and in its second occurrence in Gen. 2:7: "living soul." However, in over 400 later occurrences it is translated "soul." While this serves to make sense in most passages, it is an unfortunate mistranslation of the term. The real difficulty of the term is seen in the inability of almost all English translations to find a consistent equivalent or even a small group of high-frequency equivalents for the term. The kjv alone uses over 28 different English terms for this one Hebrew word. The problem with the English term "soul" is that no actual equivalent of the term or the idea behind it is represented in the Hebrew language. The Hebrew system of thought does not include the combination or opposition of the terms "body" and "soul," which are really Greek and Latin in origin. The Hebrew contrasts two other concepts which are not found in the Greek and Latin tradition: "the inner self" and "the outer appearance" or, as viewed in a different context, "what one is to oneself" as opposed to "what one appears to be to one's observers." The inner person is nepesh, while the outer person, or reputation, is shēm, most commonly translated "name." In narrative or historical passages of the Old Testament, nepesh can be translated as "life" or "self," as in Lev. 17:11: "For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for [yourselves]…." Needless to say, the reading "soul" is meaningless in such a text. But the situation in the numerous parallel poetic passages in which the term appears is much more difficult. The Greek Septuagint and the Latin Vulgate both simply use the Greek and Latin equivalent "soul," especially in the Psalms. The first occurrence is in Psa. 3:2: "Many are saying of my soul, There is no deliverance for him in God" (nasb). The next occurrence is in Psa. 6:3: "And my soul is greatly dismayed; But Thou, O Lord, how long?" (nasb). In both passages the parallel contrast is between nepesh and some aspect of the self, expressed as "him" in Psa. 3:2 and not expressed but understood in Psa. 6:3. There is no distinction as to whether it appears as an "A" or "B" word in the parallelism. However, since Hebrew rejects repeating the same noun in both halves of a poetic line, nepesh is often used as the parallel for the speaker, primary personal subject, and even for God, as in Psa. 11:5: "The Lord trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence [he himself] hateth." Such passages are frequent, and a proper understanding of the word enlightens many well-known passages, such as Psa. 119:109: "My life is continually in my hand, Yet I do not forget Thy law" (nasb). The versions vary widely in their readings of nepesh, with the more contemporary versions casting widely for meanings.   Usage Number: 2 Part Of Speech: Verb Original Word: ‏נָפַשׁ‎, nāpash Usage Notes:Nāpash means "to breathe; respire; be refreshed." This verb, which is apparently related to the noun nepesh, appears 3 times in the Old Testament (Exod. 23:12; Exod. 31:17). The other appearance is in 2 Sam. 16:14: "And the king, and all the people that were with him, came weary, and refreshed themselves there." Genesis 2:7 “7then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” (Genesis 2:7, ESV)   “7Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the earth and blew the breath of life into his nostrils. The man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7, GW)   “7And Jehovah God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7, ASV 1901)   “7Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7, NASB95)   “7And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7, KJV 1900)   “7And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7, NKJV)   “7God formed Man out of dirt from the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life. The Man came alive—a living soul!” (Genesis 2:7, The Message)   Psalm 42:1-2 Terrible suggested translation:  Like Psalm 42 “ As the deer pants...My soul thirsts for you” the original meaning is Hebrew is “my throat thirsts for you.”   “1As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. 2My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?” (Psalm 42:1–2, ESV)   The Root Fallacy: (D.A. Carson)   Soul – GW, NASB, YLT, NIV, KJV, ASV, Darby,  I – HCSB, NLT, LB, The Message, Vol. 5, Page 55: “The poet compares the thirsting of his soul after God to the thirsting of a stag.”   Aside from the root fallacy there's the fact this is a metaphor. The writer is comparing a deer's thirst for water need to survive with his soul's (self, inner person, etc.) need for God.  The physical is contrasted with the spiritual.   Literally it was never intended as “throat,”  That's horrible and reflects a misunderstanding of metaphor and language as well.   BOTTOM LINE:   My soul is saved because I am saved! In the end I'll be reunited with my body, but that body will be changed.   The bottom line, biblically, is that people don't have souls. They are souls. They don't have “nephesh” they are “nephesh.”   “42So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. 43It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. 44It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. 46But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual.” (1 Corinthians 15:42–46, ESV)   So yes, you ARE a soul who inhabits a body and in the end Christ will redeem both!

Why Your Team Doesn’t Care: The 4 Ways You’re Crushing Your Culture Are your team members highly accountable? Do they have a “Thank God It’s Monday” attitude? Do they take tons of initiative? If not, you’ve likely got Crushed Culture. It’s a disease. And it’s going to become an epidemic if we don’t do something about it. Evidence: three companies I used to love now have Crushed Culture: Lenscrafters, Hilton hotels, and even at times (gasp) JetBlue. It’s spreading. According to the recent Gallup poll on employee engagement: “Seventy-one percent of American workers are ‘not engaged’ or ‘actively disengaged’ in their work, meaning they are emotionally disconnected from their workplaces and are less likely to be productive. This trend remained relatively stable throughout 2011.” What? This trend has remained relatively stable. Wow. Does this concern you? A lot? And don’t think Crushed Culture symptoms are in the rank and file alone. “Our team is full of order takers.” “Why do we have so little accountability around here?” “We’re going through a lot of change. Why don’t our people embrace it?” These are but a few of the most common complaints and concerns I often hear from the C Suite. And I’ve been listening for a long time—almost 30 years. Employee disengagement, or Crushed Culture, has spread to the C Suite too. Four Steps to Cure Crushed Culture: Step 1: Emotional Equity is greater than Financial Equity. We all know what financial equity is—money—stock, comp packages, golden handcuffs. All the things we think will make people loyal to a company and keep them engaged. But this no longer works, as Gallup proves, and especially with Millennials. Nope, they, like the rest of us, want to feel like we’re part of something bigger, like we’re on a glorious mission, like our work matters, like we’ll leave the world just a little better than we found it, and we want to achieve that (in part) during our work hours. Here’s the formula: Put energy into someone by explaining why your company is doing what it is doing, what your mission, vision, and values really mean, mentor them, talk challenges out with them, pay attention to them and you’ll start to build emotional equity. That equity will now give you access to their heart, mind, Rolodex, idle thought cycles. Now they’re thinking about how to help the company innovate better, solve a specific problem, etc. as they shower and commute and whatever. That access to a person’s additional resources will enable you to influence outcomes more effectively. Now you have a shared cause, you’re on the same team, you’re safe and you belong together. It’s emotional. Step 2: Stop The Whining. The C suite, management, staff, everyone needs to get off what I call the Tension Triangle. This is where people bounce from victim to rescuer to persecutor. Stephen Karpman, MD, first created this as the Dreaded Drama Triangle or DDT. The DDT is comprised of three roles: Victim (the role where someone is “doing” something to them), Rescuer (who tries to remove the Victim’s suffering, often without being asked), and Persecutor (which the Victim blames for their suffering, yet the Persecutor is often feeling victimized too). David Emerald has extended this triangle, and I have extended it further. The net-net is Victims are complaining because they want something—so we help them shift to be an Outcome Creator. The Rescuer is just trying to end the suffering, so we help them become an Insight Creator by asking the right questions so the Victim can get what they need by themselves. The Persecutor is usually frustrated by trying to make things happen, so we help them become an Action Creator. Once everyone is trained in shifting their most prevalent role to a healthy alternative, the whining ends. Now that’s empowerment. Victim becomes Outcome Creator Rescuer becomes Insight Creator Persecutor becomes Action Creator Step 3: Invest ONLY for ROI. Training your team is expensive. So only do what matters. Every person in your company needs to be trained in Problem to Outcome (to stop the Whining), Leadership Effectiveness (so they become leaders in their own right), Influencing Outcomes and Others, Accountability, Communication, and Execution. All these be neuroscience-based to get far more bang for your buck. This training will cost you about $750-1,000 per person. If your people aren’t worth that amount, then embrace Crushed Culture. Because that’s the risk we’re talking about. Step 4: Career Path—or Exit Strategy. Dave Peacock, President of Anheuser-Busch recently shared their refreshing approach to team member reviews. Each team member knows exactly where they stand based on the number plus letter they receive through their on-going review process. If you’re a 4A, you are such a corporate asset that your boss is obligated to promote you in a year. 4Bs must be promoted within 2 years. 3As need to be tested in a different role before they’re moved up. 3B means you’re in the right job at the right time. 2s are new in a position—it’s too early to judge. 1As are put on a recovery plan, 1Bs need to exit the company. We recommend to our clients that a team member should know their next 2 potential promotions, and what exactly they need to do to earn them. Are they loyal and engaged? Oh yes. So the harsh reality is that we, the leaders, created Crushed Culture. Now we need to fix it. Here is what I’ll do to help: Number 1) I’ll lay out the neuroscience processes you need to do to help cure your Crushed Culture in record time. Keep listening to this podcast so you don’t miss any. Number 2) I’ll give a 30-minute strategy session (gratis, of course) to 3 of you. We’ll work on curing your Crushed Culture. Go to my website, www.smarttribesinstitute.com to request a session. The Youth Ministry Sherpas are back for another discussion about how to help our students think critically in a world gone mad.Recording this the day after the inauguration, we are pleased to mention that Washington, DC is still standing, and we are still here. We are still picking up the pieces of the turbulence this year has brought while trying to navigate how to pastor our students well through these times. One thing we believe is that perspective is everything. We want to create youth ministries where students appreciate the diversity of Christians throughout the world and understand that not everyone interprets things like we do. We have some suggestions in how we can grow personally as we can create environments where our students can think, grow, be challenged, and avoid perpetuating a stifling subculture. 1As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 2One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 3Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. 4Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own mastera that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. 5One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. 8For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. 9For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. 10Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; 11for it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confessb to God.” 12So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.

Amen.   Old Testament:  Haggai 1:15b-2:9 [Alternate: Job 19:23-27a] 15In the second year of King Darius,1in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the prophet Haggai, saying: 2Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, and say, 3Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Is it not in your sight as nothing? 4Yet now take courage, O Zerubbabel, says the Lord; take courage, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; take courage, all you people of the land, says the Lord; work, for I am with you, says the Lord of hosts, 5according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My spirit abides among you; do not fear. 6For thus says the Lord of hosts: Once again, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land; 7and I will shake all the nations, so that the treasure of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with splendour, says the Lord of hosts. 8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the Lord of hosts. 9The latter splendour of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts; and in this place I will give prosperity, says the Lord of hosts. Psalm:  Psalm 145:1-5, 18-21 or Psalm 98 [Alternate: Psalm 17:1-9] 1 I will exalt you, O God my King, *        and bless your Name for ever and ever. Alternate: 1 Hear my plea of innocence, O Lord;   give heed to my cry; *        listen to my prayer, which does not come from lying lips. 2 Let my vindication come forth from your presence; *        let your eyes be fixed on justice. 3 Weigh my heart, summon me by night, *        melt me down; you will find no impurity in me. 4 I give no offense with my mouth as others do; *        I have heeded the words of your lips. 5 My footsteps hold fast to the ways of your law; *        in your paths my feet shall not stumble. 6 I call upon you, O God, for you will answer me; *        incline your ear to me and hear my words. 7 Show me your marvelous loving-kindness, *        O Savior of those who take refuge at your right hand        from those who rise up against them. 8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; *        hide me under the shadow of your wings, 9 From the wicked who assault me, *        from my deadly enemies who surround me. 13 But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter. 16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, 17comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word. Gospel:  Luke 20:27-38 27 Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to him 28and asked him a question, ‘Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. 29Now there were seven brothers; the first married, and died childless; 30then the second 31and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. 32Finally the woman also died. 33In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her.' 34 Jesus said to them, ‘Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage; 35but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. 36Indeed they cannot die any more, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. 37And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 38Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive.'

Sermons – New Hope Community Church

2:1As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Sunday February 16thMatthew 5:1-16A lady by the name of Gladys Dunn moved to a new town and she decided to visit the church near her new home. She loved the beautiful sanctuary and the powerful worship, but the sermon just went on and on and on. She looked around, and saw that many people in the congregation were actually nodding off. Finally, when it was over, she turned to sleepy-looking gentleman next to her, extended her hand and said, "Hi, I'm Gladys Dunn." He replied, "I'm Glad it's done too! I thought it would never end."Jesus begins a sermon here in chapter 5 that will last all the way through chapters 6 and 7, a total of 107 verses. We refer to this as the Sermon on the Mount. There is a similar, but shorter, 30 verse version known as the sermon on the plain recorded in Luke 6.Starting in chapter 5, verse 1 we read:When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. 2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. This first section of the Sermon on the Mount is sometimes called the beatitudes. The verses all begin with the words “blessed are”. This word translated as “blessed” means much more than just “happy.” It indicates a state of spiritual well-being that results from choosing to live for God.That's the same as what Psalm 1:1-3 says“How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,Nor stand in the path of sinners,Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord,And in His law he meditates day and night.3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water,Which yields its fruit in its seasonAnd its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers. The kind of people that Jesus refers to as “blessed” are those who are “poor in spirit.”Why would poverty be seen as a blessing? The reality of being “poor in spirit” is simply that people with a greater understanding of their own spiritual need are more likely to depend on God alone and not rely on their own goodness. That's what puts them in a position to receive greater blessings. The Apostle Paul points out the same principle in Romans 9:30-32“What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith; 31 but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works.”Do you see what Paul is saying? Those who know that Jesus is the ONLY source of true righteousness will attain it by faith, but those who believe that they are capable of righteousness on their own will NEVER attain it. So acknowledging our spiritual poverty brings about great blessings. Then Jesus continues:4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. This blessing includes all types of mourning and grieving, but in the context of the entire Sermon on the Mount it put a special emphasis on people who are mourning and grieving over their sinfulness.5 “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. This verse, which refers to those that are gentle or “Meek” is most likely a reflection of Psalm 37:11 “But the humble will inherit the landAnd will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.” Don't confuse the concept of meekness with weakness. Spiritual meekness is simply an attitude of humility and submission to the will of God. Meekness actually makes us incredibly strong, because we are relying on God's power, not our own.6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.Righteousness, mercy, and purity are three qualities that we should be longing for. Our hunger and thirst should be like what David described in Psalm 42:1As a deer thirsts for streams of water,    so I thirst for you, God.Verse 8 is somewhat hard to grasp because since God is a spirit, He is technically invisible.1 Tim 6:13-16 says “I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you keep the commandment without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,15 which He will bring about at the proper time—He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal dominion! Amen. There's a doxology that goes, “unto the king immortal, invisible, the only wise God”.But as believers, through our pure hearts we will “see” God through faith, because we walk by faith, not by sight. And ultimately we WILL see Him, face to face.9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.Although the term “peacemaker” is usually used to mean making peace between people or groups of people who are fighting, it can also have a deeper meaning of helping others to find peace with God through salvation. Then in verses 10 through 12, we find ways to be blessed that we might not necessarily be looking for:10 “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.11 “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.So why will people persecute us and treat us badly? Jesus says it will be “because of Me”. In other words, when we TELL others about Jesus, some of them won't exactly appreciate what we have to say, but that doesn't change the fact that we are CALLED to tell others about Jesus. That's what He emphasizes in verse 13. 13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.In Biblical times, salt wasn't just a seasoning, it was a preservative. There was no type of refrigeration, so food would be coated in salt to keep it from rotting. As Jesus' disciples we are supposed to preserve and protect Godly values against the influences of the rotten world's corruption.Once again we need to understand that this corrupt world doesn't necessarily WANT to see Godliness preserved, so they may react negatively towards our “salt”. But Jesus warns us that if we lose our ability to preserve Godliness in our OWN lives, then we've basically lost our “saltiness” and we really can no longer serve God's purposes in the world around us.Verses 14-16 make the same point, but with a different analogy:“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor doesanyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lamp-stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”That's similar to what Isaiah 60:1-3 says“Arise, shine; for your light has come,And the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.2 “For behold, darkness will cover the earthAnd deep darkness the peoples; But the Lord will rise upon youAnd His glory will appear upon you.3 “Nations will come to your light,And kings to the brightness of your rising.Just as salt works to stop decay, light works to stop darkness. Jesus declares that he is “the light of the world” in John 8:12 and again in John 9:5.Jesus brings light to those in darkness. Do you remember the verse from Matthew 4:16? “The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light,And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death,Upon them a Light dawned.”The light that accompanies Jesus' kingdom is not just carried by his disciples; WE are the light!Ephesians 5:8 says “you were formerly darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light.”Philippians 2:15 says “prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world.”Jesus said that if salt loses its flavor it “is no longer good for anything”. In the same way, light is supposed to shine, and “a city on a hill cannot be hidden, neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl”.Since we're called to be the light of the world, our purpose is completely lost if we keep our faith hidden. Our testimony and our good works are supposed to reflect the light of God. Then those who see our godly actions will glorify not us but our Father in heaven. Interestingly, the term “Father” is used here by Matthew for the very first time. Jesus is introducing the special relationship that exists between believers and God. When we're walking AS God's children, THAT'S when His light is shining through us.Living the kingdom life automatically produces good deeds because they flow from a changed life. The metaphors of salt and light used here by Jesus show us that that the presence of the kingdom of God within us should produce changed lives. If no change is occurring; if we're still the same people we used to be; if there is no “saltiness” in our lives and essentially “taste” the same as the rest of the world; if our “light” is so dim that it's barely distinguishable from the darkness around us, then Jesus might have to wonder if we've really embraced the kingdom, and if we've really made God our Father.Let me close today with this simply quote from Jefferson Bethke's poem “Why I hate Religion but love Jesus” “if grace is water, then the church should be an oceanIt's not a museum for good people, it's a ho

Day 2 & 1As a result of excellent feedback from Linda, my wife, I've made some significant changes to the order in which speakers are introduced. I had begun with discrete, self contained blocks, where an individual presents themselves. Of course I intended to mix individual's comments together where they touched on the same topic as the film progressed, but it was made clear to me through Linda's perspective that I could begin that earlier, so there wasn't an obvious transition from one person speaking at a time to many people speaking. It was a real structural problem for me and I'm grateful for the insight she provided. You know, I know what I want to do and could have acted alone, but I had nagging doubts that my perspective was too inside, too familiar to be trusted as far as how much I could ask the audience to accept as they were introduced to the film's characters and ideas. Things such as the pacing, I'm using a lot of rapid cuts. It really pays to have someone you can trust who can offer concise, intelligent comments.Day 1 ends and I still don't have the film transfered to tape. I spent a number of hours but between working with HD footage in Avid and moving it to HDV tape, or SD for that matter, there were lots of unresolved problems. And I lost a lot of editing time in the process. Not that this isn't my own fault for starting late in the first place.I mention a number of suggestions made by one of my constant instructors, Howard Phillips, for enhancing the movement of the story and I did a poor job of explaining J & L cuts, so follow the link to find out a little bit more. I've added them throughout the film to ease the audience from one cut to another. It's a subtle thing. The difference it makes is not so much what it adds, so much as what it removes, which is often an abrupt, gawky cut between two speakers, or scenes.Another point I missed in the excitement of reciting my day, is that the 90 second segment where I introduce a new character and I thought I was going to have to scrap it because I didn't have B-roll to cover several jump cuts. I forgot to mention the solution, which was to use dip-to-color between the cuts. It's only a second where the clip fades in, then out to black, but it heals the jump cut wound quite nicely. Now, I know how to do this and had used it sparingly in other parts of the film, but I thought it was too much in your face, it would be too jarring to the viewer if I did it several times within 90 seconds. I was assured by people whose opinions matter that it was fine and acceptable. I don't know if they meant in general, or under the circumstances of the looming deadline, but I gladly accepted it like a get out of jail card. We'll see how people react at the screening.
