Kɛ ɔde ɛ Glocal Citizens! I'm greeting you in the father tongue of this week's guest, Esther Armah, Founder and Executive Director of The Armah Institute of Emotional Justice - a global institute providing emotionality education in the context of race, gender and culture. "Kɛ ɔde ɛ" is "hello" in Nzema, which is also the native tongue of Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwame_Nkrumah). In addition to celebrating women all month, March 6th marked the 64th anniversary of Ghana's independence which, in the context of my conversation with Esther is a timely point of reflection on how contemporary society continues to process violence, healing and gender in the shadow of imperialism. Esther, a Ghanaian Brit also has acclaimed experience as a multi media journalist, documentary maker and playwright with productions appearing on stages in New York, Chicago and Accra. She's a radio show host, a fellow podcaster as creator of 'THE SPIN' (https://spinitron.com/WBTV/show/195500/The-Spin), and has beed a television political commentator on MSNBC, CNN, GRITtv, BET and MSNBC. As a writer, her work has been published in The Guardian, West Africa magazine, Gawker, AlterNet.org, Salon.com, and The Huffington Post. Esther is truly a women on a change maker's mission addressing the systematic challenges that are pervasive throughout ALL cultures, and hers is a story you'll not want to miss. She is currently living, working and playing mostly in Ghana; Esther still calls NYC and London "home" too. Dear America: So much to say, but so little time. White America is in an uproar. They have finally elected a President who is actually doing what he said that he would do. They didn't really mind the hateful rhetoric that was spewed at marginalized communities as long as he allowed hem to maintain their white privilege. To keep things fair and balanced, he is sharing some of the love with the white community and they don't like it. Leave their birth control and abortions alone!! White women thought that the President was just making small talk when he stated that he would go after Planned Parenthood, Roe vs. Wade, equal pay for equal work, etc. He told you exacly what he was going to do and you didn't believe him. Now you want us to march with you to protest the injustice. When Black women pushed back, you clutched your pearls, called us ungrateful bitches, and (as usual) blamed us for everything that went wrong. We are used to this type of behavior from yu and this is why we disregard those white tears. Your white fragility is going to get us killed. White America, will you be there when they come for us? Will you be there cheering them on as they persecute us for not working for free, or subjecting ourselves to your abuse and exploitation, or sitting in the cut saying nothing because you're afraid that they will come after you next. They will come after you and there will be no one there to stand up for you. How many of you are going to stand with us as they implement a new war on drugs, crime, etc.? Jeff Sessions is chomping at the bit to incarcerate as many of us as possible. Will you be taking pictures to put in your photo album talking about the good old days?
Donald Trump has been sworn into the office of President of the United States. Mass protests have been taking place all over the world and it's not going away any time soon. I'm conflicted about being asked to support white women and men for a number of issues that seem self inflicted. I'm conflicted about putting my life, sanity, livelihood, freedom, etc. on the line for people who don't give a shit about the oppression that people of color endure on a daily basis. I'm conflicted because many of the same people asking for support only seek many people of color ust to be able to claim diversity and inclusion. I'm conflicted because at the end of the parch, parade, protest, etc. they get to go back to their lily white non-black neighbor having lives. I'm conflicted because you blame us for not fixing problems that we never created, but you proit from. I'm conflicted because your support comes with strings and obnoxious demands. I'm conflicted because you intterupt me while I'm speaking and then claim that I am trying to silence you. I'm conflicted because when I seek out other people of color with whom to identify, you then call it reverse racism....when you know good and damn well that you never prepared a place for me at the table until you were called out. Am I angry? Yes :::crickets::: Do you have anything else to add to that No? I don't owe you an explanation. Do I apologize for being angry? Hell NO! You could have said that differently. Fuck you and you can quote me on that. Can you help me heal? No, I don't need you to define my pain and determine that I should just get over it. How long have I felt this way? wtf? Have you been living under a rock? I'm starting to believe that you get off on people of color being harmed, damaged, disrespected, and marginalied. You never intended on giving up your white privelege. USA!!
Sheeple holding up the men's bathroom and gas station. How much are the Million Women March going to spend on hotels? Protesting is stupid and a waste of time. Concerts are also stupid and a waste of time.
We decided to end this year with a bang and chat with one of Valentine's sheroes! We were positively thrilled to speak with musician, author, educator, and feminist archivist, Alice Bag. Alice took us along on her drive to dinner and she spoke with us about the satisfaction of having complete creative control in the production of her Self-titled first solo album, growing up in the L.A. punk scene, her political and feminist origins, The Million Women March on Washington, the Bags, and the Pussyhat Project. For more information on East L.A. punk legend/HBIC, Alice Bag, visit http://Alicebag.com/ Woman's Work is a monthly podcast about women doin' stuff. We highlight music and other creative work made by women. Co-hosted by Grace Woodard and Valentine Ubaldo. Find us on Twitter, and Instagram at @womanswerk. Mark compares the effort to defend liberty and save more babies to the character Dustin Doss in the movie Hacksaw Ridge. Doss said, "With a world set on taking life, I intend on saving it.” Christians need to step up to the plate and be willing to be persecuted. When Christ calls a man, He bids him come and die: “Greater love has no one than this that one lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) The election of Donald Trump has given us a very small window to make a very big impact for good. Also, Mark discusses our plans to go to Washington DC for the inauguration and the Million Women March on Jan. 20-21, 2016.
The NRA, which is only a small handful of people, runs this country from top to bottom. They control Congress like a puppet-master. Violence runs rampant throughout this nation with the unbridled distribution and sanction of hand guns and fire arms of all manner, especially high-powered military assault rifles! Wayne La Pierre ought to have his "Pierre" detached from his carcas! We live in a Banana Republic. Those so-called Banana Republics in South America actually have far fewer murders than here in America - the land of "American Exceptionalism". I think it's going to take a "Million Women" March on our nation's capital to ever stem the flow of this insidious death-producing madness! Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose! We have nothing to lose but our INSANITY! Come on Americans, Cowboy-Up ---- let's push back and strangle the NRA in its crib! Hell, the game is changing right in front of our very eyes – for today – Monday, June 22, 2015 – the Republican Governor of South Carolina – Nikki Haley – succumbed to the pressure to take down the Confederate flag from the South Carolina State House – and – while appearing before the cameras with a diverse group of South Carolina lawmakers – agreed to do JUST THAT! Next Stop – The NRA!
