Cleo Sylvestre (1945-) is a woman of many firsts: she is the first Black woman to play a leading role at the National Theatre in London, one of the first Black actors to have a recurring role in a primetime British soap and one of the first Black Brits to release a single in 1964 – with none other than her friends, The Rolling Stones. The Guardian called her “the Black actor who should have been one of Britain's biggest stars”. So why isn't she a household name? Sylvestre was born in Euston, London, and attended Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts before launching into a life on stage and screen: she made her West End debut in 1964 alongside British acting legend Alec Guinness and went on to star in some of the definitive shows of the Sixties, those that put working class actors on TV for the first time, including visionary director Ken Loach's Up The Junction, Cathy Come Home and Poor Cow, as well as Doctor Who, Coronation Street and Crossroads.  Like Dana Gillespie, who is also featured this season, Cleo hung out at the Marquee Club in Soho, which is where she met the Rolling Stones, who invited her to record the 1964 single, To Know Him Is To Love Him, while rock'and'roll royalty like Jimmy Page and the Hollies would often come for one of her mother's home cooked meals.  It wasn't easy being one of the few Black women breaking through in the entertainment industry, as she explains, discussing race, resilience, rejection and wanting to pave the way for working class actors, as well as how she's returned to singing after 50 years with her blues alter ego, Honey B Mama. It's interesting to compare Cleo's and Dana's stories – they moved through the Swinging Sixties differently but have both ended up performing the blues later in life. And they didn't meet each other till later in life, either! If you liked this, listen to our PP Arnold episode, another singer who Mick Jagger was quite taken with early on… And you can catch Honey B Mama and her band playing at the Rosemary Branch Theatre in London, where Cleo served as co-director for 20 years. This week Daniel Kaluuya who is also currently out in the US won an Oscar for best supporting actor in the film Judas and The Black Messiah. Should more Black British entertainers and creatives follow suit and start moving over to the US to fulfil their potential? The pair then move on to discussing new music that has been released over the past month including the release of DJ Khaled's latest album 'Khaled Khaled' which Toren deemed lacklustre, questioning whether it was a project that Khaled may have had to drop as opposed to wanting to drop it, as a lot of the songs felt like throwaways. Should Khaled perhaps steer away from the albums and enter the music management and entertainment bag? Finally, the London Mayoral election is in a few days, 23 candidates are running the race. If you are eligible to vote make sure you head down to your polling station on the 6th of May and vote! I'm greeting you in the father tongue of this week's guest, Esther Armah, Founder and Executive Director of The Armah Institute of Emotional Justice - a global institute providing emotionality education in the context of race, gender and culture. "Kɛ ɔde ɛ" is "hello" in Nzema, which is also the native tongue of Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwame_Nkrumah). In addition to celebrating women all month, March 6th marked the 64th anniversary of Ghana's independence which, in the context of my conversation with Esther is a timely point of reflection on how contemporary society continues to process violence, healing and gender in the shadow of imperialism. Esther, a Ghanaian Brit also has acclaimed experience as a multi media journalist, documentary maker and playwright with productions appearing on stages in New York, Chicago and Accra. She's a radio show host, a fellow podcaster as creator of 'THE SPIN' (https://spinitron.com/WBTV/show/195500/The-Spin), and has beed a television political commentator on MSNBC, CNN, GRITtv, BET and MSNBC. As a writer, her work has been published in The Guardian, West Africa magazine, Gawker, AlterNet.org, Salon.com, and The Huffington Post. Esther is truly a women on a change maker's mission addressing the systematic challenges that are pervasive throughout ALL cultures, and hers is a story you'll not want to miss. She is currently living, working and playing mostly in Ghana; Esther still calls NYC and London "home" too. Part 2 of this conversation with UK Singer, Rapper, and Drummer JiGH (@jiggyjigh) resumes with TeaRon (@tearonworld) as the two dive into the controversial conversation of the "Black British Actor Invasion."This conversation takes place after the recent release of Regina King's directorial role of the film 'One Night in Miami' and with stars like Damson Idris, Daniel Kaluuya, Michaela Coel, Letitia Wright and more taking over film & television roles while being British-Born but playing the part of African-Americans, this conversation was so healthy and necessary. We hope that this conversation helps to shed light on the rift and shift the focus on working together to create more opportunities and tell the stories of both Black Americans and Black Brits in abundance.Follow and Learn more:JiGH (@jiggyjigh)https://linktr.ee/jiggyjighSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=31825951&fan_landing=true)

There are so many questions to explore with the topic of reparations. Do black people in the UK deserve reparations? Why haven't we received reparations up till now? How can reparations help the black community? How can the reparations we are owed be reasonably quantified? How can we effectively manage reparations that we receive? Join us in this thought-provoking episode as we discuss whether black Brits are owed reparations and how we can make the distribution of reparations a practical reality, rather than an ongoing discussion which has continued to go round in circles for centuries.

In this episode, I am joined by Isaiah Smalls and Akintunde Ahmad to discuss the similarities and differences between Black British and African American culture, as well the possibility of diaspora solidarity despite these differences. To what extent does America's cultural hegemony penetrate what it means to be 'black'? To what extent do British and Amercicans' different experiences of blackness come down to different migration patterns? Or even the difference in generational distance from the African continent? We might be different but is the racism universal? Why do African-Americans struggle to relate to grime artists in a way that Black Brits do not in terms of mainstream hip-hop music? Is the American dominance of black culture simply proportional to their larger black population?
