Lynne Hardin has always possessed an entrepreneur's spirit. After high school and college, her first job was working for Braniff International as an Airline Hostess. Lynne volunteered for the Military Air Transport System (MATS), flying U.S. service personnel to various stations around the world during the Viet Nam conflict. She spent several years in the education and investment arena, working with the California Teachers Association. Lynne moved to Florida and established the Key West Tennis and Scuba Center; then consulted in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and St. Petersburg on land use. Lynne was recruited to Oklahoma City as the first Development Director for the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics, raising over 35M for the school. In 1994, after a life-changing auto accident, Lynne authored The Magic of Why® a groundbreaking book and curriculum providing a process to examine your purpose. Leading her High School alumni, she created FRIENDS of NWC, which has raised over $2 million to impact students and teachers. She produced The Vagina Monologues in OKC and in 2019 she was inducted into The Order of The Round Table, her School Hall of Fame. She initiated and facilitated passage of the Oklahoma Breast Cancer Bill, which continues to fund mobile mammograms across Oklahoma. She was elected and served as Chairman of the OKC Public School Board. She had a vision after the million-man march and in 2023 created a 501C3 foundation, Women's Imagine Network, (WIN), so the idea of a Million Women March was born. With imagination and inspired effort, a million women, from home, will affect positive improvements for women and families. School board meetings used to be pretty boring. But now they've become a battleground over big political topics like the coronavirus and race. StateImpact's Robby Korth reports with The Oklahoman's Nuria Martinez-Keel on what's happening at these meetings in Oklahoma.

Host: Earlier this month Oklahoma School for the Deaf unveiled a fresh logo featuring their new Bison mascot. StateImpact's Robby Korth reports the Bison name flips a new page in the storied history of Oklahoma's school for deaf students. NEWSPAPER CLIPPING PAGE FLIP RK: John Reinenger is thumbing through a book of old newspaper clippings. The pages are from his days as a student at Oklahoma School for the Deaf here in Sulphur, a school that competed under the name Indians in his time. He's speaking here through an interpreter. REINENGER (through interpreter): It brings back a lot of memories. Definitely nostalgic. So yeah. I feel very, very closely connected to OSD. It's like my second home, really. (11) RK: The Midwest City man has a son here. His parents met here. He is a 2000 graduate. But there was one thing his mother Sylvia told him not to do at school. REINENGER: My mother told me never to dress like in costume as an Indian, like any kind of Indian costumes. (06) RK: John and his mother are both citizens of the Muscogee Nation. And people did dress up in costume regularly at football games and pep rallies. REINENGER: I mean, I didn't honestly really think much about it. And then as life went on and I've gotten older, then I've looked at it and realized, Ooh. [air sucking grimace] Yikes. OK. (08) RK: There's been a community-wide realization here as well. The Indians mascot was officially retired this year and replaced with the Bison. Superintendent Chris Dvorak. DVORAK: It really kind of came to a head where there were some serious conversations within the administration that had links to alumni. And we just got the sense that the time is now, you know, we can we really need to have a serious conversation. The writing is on the wall. (18) RK: So he tasked OSD alum and director of student life Trudy Mitchell with creating a task force and leading the charge toward a new mascot. She spoke to StateImpact through an interpreter. MITCHELL: The change is needed. I'm excited that it's going to be something new, it's going to be a new vision for our school. (08) RK: Mitchell met and spoke with dozens of alumni about the potential for change. It wasn't well received at first, but she says, after several discussions many in the community have come around to the idea. MITCHELL: Oh we had lots of options. We had painted horse, a T. Rex, a Tasmanian Devil. There was an eagle. RK: But more than two-thirds ended up voting for Bison. Oklahoma School for the Deaf was hardly alone in its use of an Indigenous-themed mascot in Oklahoma. A StateImpact review of school nicknames found at least 75 public school districts - almost 15 percent - use Indigenous themed mascots. Corey Bunch, Education Services executive director for Cherokee Nation, says that can be hurtful. BUNCH: The chants from opposing teams and the slogans that kind of are associated with the mascots and the imagery they can quickly get carried away. And they just don't represent Native people. (14) RK: The movement to change offensive names is gaining momentum in western states. Laws in Washington and Colorado passed this year are compelling schools to stop using Indigenous-themed mascots. Such a bill has not even been introduced in Oklahoma - the state with the highest proportion of Native Americans in the lower 48. BUNCH: Certainly, Cherokee Nation nor other tribal nations are out twisting anybody's arm, telling them that they ought to change their mascots. But when we are asked we are certainly happy to participate. (13) RK: Individual districts are considering changes. Tulsa Union recently announced it would change its nickname. Tulsa Public Schools is looking at changing mascots at some sites as well. Bunch served as an advisory member for the review boards at both districts. And he says he always wants to advocate for Native students. BUNCH: We don't want them to be ashamed for any reason to just be the people that...

Well, we didn't want to do another episode on COVID-19, but….with the Delta variant, the rise in cases across parts of the country, and all the misinformation floating around social media….we kinda had to. For Episode 46, host Joe Buccino brings back Dr. Sammy Choi, the Chief of Research at Fort Bragg's Womack Army Medical Center, and Army Lieutenant Colonel Owen Price, Fort Bragg Force Health Protection Officer. You may remember Owen and Sammy from Episode 13, our first foray into COVID. These two are joined by Army Lieutenant Colonel Teresa Pearce, a Preventive Medicine Physician and the Director of Fort Bragg Public Health. Joe leads our experts in an illuminating discussion that will answer any remaining questions: How concerned should we be about the delta variant? Am I safe if I'm unvaccinated but already contracted COVID-19? Will we go back into a shutdown? Are we going to receive a booster shot? Is Johnson & Johnson safe? Have any Soldiers experienced concerning side effects of the COVID vaccines? Which is the best, most effective, safest vaccine? What are the risks of myocarditis associated with the vaccine? This episode comes at a critical moment for the Army. Over the past six months, the Army has clawed its way out of a terrible position with COVID. Most bases have lifted restrictions, children are back in school, and facilities are reopened. With the Delta variant, however, which we know to be twice as transmissible as the strain that caused the winter surge, we're in danger of losing all that we've gained. Most concerning, the Army now has a number of COVID cases among fully-vaccinated Soldiers. Further, the Delta variant appears to generate much higher viral loads, and unvaccinated individuals may be twice as likely to be hospitalized. Please listen to Episode 46 and pass this around to anyone who remains unvaccinated or is concerned about the virus. About Episode 46's guests: Choi is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine; he completed a combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Residency at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, Fort Bliss, Texas. Owen Price is an Army Lieutenant Colonel and a graduate of Oklahoma State with a degree in Entomology; He is an Army Environmental Science and Engineer Teresa Pearce is, like Owen, an Army Lieutenant Colonel. He is a Preventive Medicine Physician with a Masters of Public Health.

Join Darci aka Boss Lady and Kyle for the 100th episode of the #QualityMatters podcast. In typical "Boss Lady" fashion Darci has selected the topic to be education from a case study "Oklahoma School District Goes Over the Top". An old saying goes hard times create strong people, strong people create good times, good times create weak people and weak people create hard times. How do we break the cycle an stay on top? Well the Jenks Public Schools in Oklahoma was already doing all the education things right and were the best or among the best in the state in most categories. To ensure continuous improvement, they decided to go on a quality journey that took them to receiving the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award in 2005. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Djxss4QP1Jg Learn more about #QualityMatters & Texas Quality Assurance :LinkedIn | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTubewww.qmcast.com | Texas Quality Assurance |QMS Bootcamp Sponsor a future #QualityMatters podcast

Monday was a new kind of first day of school in Oklahoma: the first one back since schools shuttered after spring break to combat the spread of COVID-19. Many school districts are turning to the internet to conduct instruction. But for 167,000 Oklahoma students that isn't an option. So, school districts are getting creative to deliver the instruction to kids.

Show #609 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 13th October 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. AUDI TT SET TO MORPH INTO ALL-ELECTRIC CROSSOVER https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/audi/tt/105191/audi-tt-set-to-morph-into-all-electric-crossover?_mout=1&utm_campaign=autoexpress_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter NEW CAR RENTAL COMPANY TO RENT OUT “ONLY ELECTRIC VEHICLES” https://www.portugalresident.com/2019/10/11/new-car-rental-company-to-rent-out-only-electric-vehicles/ DAIMLER RECALLS HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF MERCEDES-BENZ DIESEL VEHICLES https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-daimler-emissions-kba-recall/daimler-recalls-hundreds-of-thousands-of-mercedes-benz-diesel-vehicles-idUKKBN1WQ2JL NASCAR GREEN LIGHTS HYBRID CARS FOR THE RACE TRACK IN 2022 https://www.foxbusiness.com/sports/nascar-goes-green-hybrid-cars-2022 QUESTION OF THE WEEK jdonalds2001 • 1 day ago Should electrify commercial trucks next. There is a huge gap in efficiency between a petrol pickup and an EV pickup. D R-K • 1 day ago I have to say that if there is one thing I wish everyone was doing the same way it is going down in China... it is changing out their fleets and getting it done. Entire fleets overnight, buses, taxis and now dump trucks. It is the one thing they continue to impress with that I wish the USA, UK , Canada or even Germany as a large economic power would beat them at. They are taking their air quality and emissions goals seriously. e-Tripping with Adam Gebbett • 2 days ago Hi Martin, the most important electrified transport conversion is in the shipping industry. These vessels carry everything we consume around the world and use low grade oil to power them. wizza • 4 days ago buses im a bus driver it would be amazing i would take pay cut to drive quite smooth bus that doesnt break down or leak deisel PD Ken • 5 days ago QOTW. Two of the main benefits of EVs are in reducing CO2 and in cities especially, pollution. CO2 might be best tackled by electrifying trucks (the UK kind) and pollution by electrifying taxis and buses. All these vehicle types are likely to do far higher annual mileages than private cars and hence electrification will give the greatest benefit. It could be argued that a battery in a car doing 15k miles a year or less is a wasted resource which could be better used in a taxi or other high mileage vehicle. STEVE ROTHE The US Postal Service here in the US! Why? Because they drive every road in the US 6 days a week, at slow speed and they do a LOT of stopping so regen braking would be used a LOT. I guess they would not work that well in winter without an auxillary heater, but seats and steering wheel should have electric heat. Your show is TOPS!!! Mike in Oklahoma School buses are the most important vehicles to become electric. I’m told in the US there are like three times the number of school buses versus municipal buses. Not to mention they are carrying our children and we want them to have the cleanest air to breath as possible! Luis Janeiro I think the aim should be to maximise the quantity of fossil fuels that each kWh of battery we manage to produce is able to substitute. Many people will argue that buses or trucks are the most important, because they are bigger, more polluting. But buses or truks make quite efficient use of fossil fuels today as they transport a lot of people or goods at once. I would start electrifying the segments with the worst performance of fossil use per person-km or tonne-km today. BRUNO ARRIOLA Not sure about other parts of the world, but here in the United States the combined annual mileage of semi-trucks (delivery trucks) is around 140 billion miles (per HDS Driving Institute https://hdstruckdrivinginstitute.com/semi-trucks-numbers/). Now just imagine if we could electrify all the trucks with the snap of a finger... MUNAVER My answer to the question of the week is to covert ships and trains to electric propulsion and then pickup truck or utes as we call them here in Australia. Also Martyn Please can you talk about EV transformation in other markets like South America, India, Southeast Asia, Russia, the middle east and Africa in your podcast as I hardly hear you mention any of these other important markets. DAFYDD CHEUNG In the America, the blinding obvious vehicles that need cleaning up, preferably via full electrification. Are pickup trucks, which are not subject to any emissions regulations. Nor are they subject to a minimum mpg target. In the UK, I’d say PSVs, including all minibuses. Plus vehicles operated by councils. In addition, I’ve thought for many years, that ICE sports car in general, should be banned in their entirety. As they are dedicated to wasting as much fossil juice, in as short a period as possible. JOHN FRUHWIRTH We should, In priority sequence, electrify the following vehicles: Buses - they carry millions of people around cities (follow China's lead) "Last Mile" delivery vehicles (vans, trucks, etc.) After all, if you bought it, a truck brought it. Long haul trucks/lorries (e.g. The Tesla Semi, etc.) Civic service vehicles (garbage trucks, street sweepers, etc.) Heavy equipment (bull dossers, back hoes, road graders, etc.) YANN T FROM MONTREAL in my opinion, the most critical segment that needs electrification are semi trucks (53 footers). Lorries as you would say. Smaller vans too for professionals. They transport a lot of goods around the world. They are constantly on the road burning a lot of dirty old diesel. They could be fitted with a lot of batteries if it could be fitted on the trailer for longer range, maybe? Image a world where all trucks are electrified. No more diesel, no more particules, no more black smoke coming out of huge exhaust pipes, and so much torque to move around heavy loads. JOHN BALL The most important transportation segment to electrify in The United States is large tractor trailer trucks. They will convert to electric drive as soon as it is more profitable to do so and production capacity ramps up. When trucks are electric the large service plazas all along our highways will convert to high capacity superchargers servicing trucks and cars. This will solve the charging infrastructure problem and lead to rapid conversion to electric transport. These high capacity superchargers will require large banks of batteries QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… How can we make up for the lost revenue from taxing fossil fuels? Triv and Lanigan are discussing the proposed bill in the Florida legislature that would provide $67 million for a program to train teachers to carry firearms, plus restrictions on buying guns. An Oklahoma school district has installed bulletproof shelters inside classrooms, is that a good idea for other schools? Browns head coach Hue Jackson says he still plans to jump into Lake Erie and wants the organization to join saying it will "cleanse the Cleveland Browns" Will that help the Browns?

Growing up on a cattle ranch, Amanda Stockton dreams of searching for life elsewhere in the universe. Dr. Amanda Stockton is an assistant professor in the Chemistry and Biochemistry department at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Her work walks the line between engineering and science to develop instrumentation capable of looking for organic molecules elsewhere in the solar system. These molecules could be the feedstock for an emergence of life or the remnants of past life now extinct on places like Europa, Enceladus, and Mars. Dr. Stockton grew up on a cattle ranch in Oklahoma, where she graduated from the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she majored in Aerospace Engineering and Chemistry – seemingly unrelated topics but perfect for her “dream job,” i.e. the one she has now. After obtaining a masters at Brown in chemistry, she earned her PhD with Dr. Richard Mathies at the University of California, Berkeley working on increasing the analytical chemistry capabilities of the Mars Organic Analyzer microchip capillary electrophoresis instrument platform. She continued in this vein at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, by furthering the microfluidic engineering side of the technology as first a NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellow and then as a Technologist. At Georgia Tech, her group’s work seeks to do both the engineering and the science to synergistically promote instrument capabilities and robustness. Currently, the group’s main NASA-funded project is a version of the Mars Organic Analyzer that could fit on a kinetic impactor mission to an icy moon – a project for which testing involves a giant rail gun and a magnetic capture system to decelerate the instrument at 50,000 g or the equivalent of hitting a planet at 5 km/s.
