My Moments of 2024 is a selection of songs that have created special musical marks. 3 groups of artists have a very significant input this year. Fontaines DC, Kutiman and Ezra Collective have been my favourite artists for 2024. I have not only included music from this current year as it is not the music made in one specific year the only one we pay attention and my criteria for this compilation of great tunes is what music has stopped me in my tracks and made an impact on me as a listener. Moments 2024 is definitely not background music. The final song is an astonishing cover of the 1970s hit "Why Can't We Live Together" with a beautiful chorus of female singers chanting No More Wars, No More Wars. It makes a suitable final to a year of human tragedies inflicted through conflict finishes. You can say louder but never so beautifully stated. I hope the listener to Mestizo Sounds appreciate and enjoy Moments 2024. Melike Şahin, Kutiman, Dijf Sanders and Ah! Kosmos discuss combining lyrics with music, working with others over long distances, and their favourite parts of the collaboration process. Melike Şahin was born in Istanbul, and developed a great interest in music as a child. After university she worked with Turkish psychedelic group Baba Zula, before beginning her solo career in 2017. Her sound navigates across Middle Eastern and Anatolian pop, and she collaborates with musicians from all over the world. Kutiman is an internationally revered producer, composer and animator from Israel who is constantly creating. He's known for his dance and groove-orientated style, and prolific productions. He's also responsible for the Thru You series, in which he mashes together unrelated YouTube videos to create original tracks. Dijf Sanders is a Belgian multi-instrumentalist and composer who specialises in experimental music and field recordings. Previously a member of synth-pop bands Teddiedrum and The Violent Husbands, his sonic universes explore electronica, jazz and psychedelia, enriching his sound with influences from across the world. Turkish composer, producer and performer Başak Günak, also known as Ah! Kosmos, uses polyrhythms and electronic composition to build immersive, mystical worlds of sound. Her works and sound installations have featured in festivals and institutions across the world, and as a performer she's supported the likes of Sigur Rós, James Holden, and Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood.

As broadcast September 22, 2022 with plenty of your boy Roy to keep you company. Tonight we open with the old and new from one of our absolute heroes in Roy Ayers, who just was part of Kyoto Jazz Massive's first album in 19 years! We also funked up the first hour with tons of favorites in Joan As Police Woman, Arjuna Oakes, Serebii, Surprise Chef, and Devon Gilfillian amongst a slew of others. For hour 2, you know the drill as Dan Lloyd brings the heat with our AMPED rock weekly, showing off the good, the bad, and the ugly in rock for this week's season opener. Great tunes from The Beths, Editors, and Meat Wave being highlights although a huge miss from Placebo covering a Tears For Fears classic is thrown in to sabotage the works and finish the show strong & oh so wrong! As broadcast May 12, 2022 with plenty of new cuts to taste test for your streaming palette. Lots of new tunes to go through in hour 1 along with a highlight of Jazzanova's new remixes compilation featuring the sounds selected by DJ Amir's Strata Records The Sound of Detroit compilation to start. Beyond that, new joints out from Swatkins, Kutiman, Bobby Oroza, Monster Rally, and a slew of others as well to cover the first half of the show. Dan Lloyd joins us once again after a very busy weekend of album releases, most notably Sharon Van Etten, The Smile, and Rammstein. We also had some major beef getting dropped via Twitter by The Lemonheads directed at Jawbreaker, which we discussed somewhat at length before closing the show with Belle and Sebastian from their new LP.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)DJ Amir w/Jazzanova & Sean Haefeli – Introduction & Lost My LoveSwatkins – Until I Get BackTanika Charles – Hold Me (Like A Grudge)Ennio Morricone – Passporto per l'allegriaKutiman – Tears of One HundredEx-poets – Bay of Pigs Part II (30:53)Bobby Oroza feat Cold Diamond & Mink – Through These TearsDojo Cuts feat Carlton Jumel Smith – Here We Are (inst.)Monster Rally – Golden ShoresAdrian Quesada feat Gabriel Garzon-Montano – El ParaguasThe Diasonics – BalanceJean Carne feat Jazz Is Dead – The SummertimeEmanative feat Liz Elensky & Ben Hadwen – Fall In To Me Part III (58:37)Rammstein – AngstBlack midi – Welcome to HellThe Smile – Thin ThingThe Chats – 6L GTRRolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – My EchoStarcrawler – Roadkill Part IV (90:10)RKL – Scab on My Brain (Live)U2 – Sunday Bloody SundaySharon van Etten – HeadspaceJawbreaker – BoxcarThe Lemonheads – It's a Shame About RayBelle and Sebastian – Talk to Me, Talk to Me

In tribute to Skibadee, the influential and legendary MC, we play some of his more Hip Hop orientated releases, including his big club track Tika Toc and music from the project 2 X Freestyle (Skibadee & Det). Rest In Peace. An all time Reggae classic from Fabian plus brand new music from Chronixx (produced by Inflo) and Shy FX and Liam Bailey. Hip Hop from Paula Perry (produced by DJ Premier). Jazz Beats from Ebi Soda feat Yazz Ahmed on Tru Thoughts. A great tune from Kutiman & Elif Çağlar. A track influenced by the UK 90's / 00's Asian Underground scene from yourboykiran but done in a futuristic style. Plus plenty more musical treats.
La Fuga, Felipe Gordon, Kutiman, El Canto del Loco, David Bisbal, Rasco y Destroyers, Galvan Real, Despistaos y más. As broadcast February 24, 2022 with plenty of new & old to keep your pod experience glistening with a vintage shine. Tonight we open the show with Bo Diddley, who on this date won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 1998 Grammy Awards along with Roy Orbison. Then we get into the bevvy of funk and soul out for the week, with new albums out from Stro Elliot, Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, along with great Israeli-Turkish collab record called Remotely Close that you should definitely check out in full. After 9 bells Dan Lloyd is once again in the house to take us through the new rock tunes for the week, with Fontaines DC, Goose, and Grace McKagan all out with notable new singles. However, we ended the show with a three track tribute to Mark Lanegan, who passed away at just 57 years of age. Mark was a huge presence in rock since his early days with Screaming Trees through his time with Queens of the Stone Age and after as a soloist. He will be missed and may he rest in power.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Bo Diddley – Bite YouKutiman feat Elif Caglar – Remotely Close: SilkywayAdeline – Maintain (Jafunk remix)Sister Sledge ft Sledgendary – FreeIsak Thomas & The Stoop Boys – The OthersideThe Sure Fire Soul Ensemble – The Other Side Part II (32:50)Sefi Zisling feat Cagri Sertel – Remotely Close: Purple MidnightEbi Soda feat Yazz Ahmed – ChandlerEl Michels Affair – Things Done ChangedStro Elliot feat James Brown – The Big Purple DonutRIVER feat Lute – WE'LL BE TOGETHERDelvon Lamarr Organ Trio – Uncertainty Part III (61:16)Hot Water Music – Lock UpFontaines DC – I Love YouCoheed and Cambria – The Liar's ClubEd Sheeran – Bad Habits feat. As broadcast February 3, 2022 with plenty of vintage for your new podcast look. Tonight we mark the date of Tone Loc's "Funky Cold Medina" going to #1 in 1989 by not playing that joint, but rather the title track to the album "Loc'ed After Dark," which is true Tone Smith if you asked us (which you didn't, but it's our show). First hour full of new and recent funk & soul releases for our Sampled first hour, with cuts from Moonchild, Kutiman, Darius, along with a Nina Simone remix by HONNE being highlights. Second hour was also a busy affair, as it's a big Friday upcoming in the world of rock and a lot of new albums got announced too. However, the big news is two breakups, with Black Country, New Road's front man calling it quits, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones doing the same. Both situtations are pretty murky as far as details, but kind of sad on both fronts especially the former, as their sophomore album is set for release this Friday!#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Tone Loc – Loc'ed After DarkDaytoner – TimeMelanie Charles feat Marlena Shaw – Woman of the Ghetto (Reimagined)Mica Millar – Preacher ManMoonchild feat Rapsody – Love I Need Swatkins feat Moorea Masa & The Mood – Lost & Alive Part II (31:51)Darius feat Khadja Bonet – NOTHING TO METopher James & Biscuit Brigade – Waiting on the ColorsNurdjana – What If I Love YouVendredi Sur Mer – Le LacDJ Cam – Tropical GypsyKutiman feat Mejja – TimamNina Simone – My Baby Just Cares For Me (HONNE Remix) Part III (60:04)Korn – ForgottenThe Linda Lindas – Growing UpLucy Dacus – Kissing LessonsBloc Party – The Girls are FightingGlacier Veins – AutonomyBlack Country, New Road – Bread Song Part IV (92:02)Gregor Barnett –Driving Through the NightThe Smile – The SmokeMighty Mighty Bosstones – The Impression That I GetRolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – The Way It ShattersPuppy – And Watched It GlowBright Eyes - Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh (feat. As broadcast August 20, 2021 with a record amount of legroom for podcast flyers. Tonight we welcomed a fantastic horn player from Tel Aviv to take over the playlist in our 2nd hour tonight. Sefi Zisling is a veteran jazz & funk artist out of Israel's largest city who has been a long-time fixture of the vibrant scene there. He played a list of favorites for the playlist while talking about remaking Alice Russell's "Heartbreaker," along with what it's like to work in the studio with his wife and rather famous sister, and the background of the tunes he loves. As pandemic restrictions ease in different countries, musicians from across the world discuss how performing live gives them a special connection with audiences. Cellist and singer Abel Selaocoe talks about his Proms concert, called Africa Meets Europe, coming up in London in August – and how he first got involved in music as a boy in Sebokeng, South Africa. Egyptian-Australian oud virtuoso Joseph Tawadros shares how he's tried to maintain contact with his fans despite lockdown. His latest album is called Hope In An Empty City. Sudanese jazz musician and radio presenter Islam Elbeiti tells how being a female bass player appearing on stage can be challenging in a conservative society. And Israeli musician Kutiman shares three lessons he's learned about reinventing his art in isolation. His single, Guruji, is out in August. Presenting Princess Shaw (2015) Samantha Montgomery (Princess Shaw) is a talented singer/songwriter and kind soul whose personality gleams throughout Ido Haar's 2015 documentary (the film we reviewed in lieu of Hester Street because it recently played at the Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema). The film chronicles Montgomery's day-to-day existence in New Orleans and Atlanta, as well her long-distance collaborations with Kutiman, the Israeli visual artist and musician, which eventually lead her to international travel and fame. Listen to Shoshanah and I gush over Montgomery, talk about her YouTube channel, and discuss whether Kutiman is an opportunist, a sensitive artist, or the victim of Haar's artistic choices as a director. Next Time and Thank You As promised, we'll move onto Hester Street (1975) (IMDb link), directed by Joan Micklin Silver. This is yet another reputed "Jewish classic," though I hear good things (shout out to Mitchell Brown over at The Discreet Bourgeois). Thank you again to the Klezmer Rebs who continue to graciously let us use their music as our theme song. Their website is located here, and their bandcamp site is here. Listen to them! Aaron
In the documentary “Presenting Princess Shaw,” director Ido Haar follows the aspiring singer Samantha Montgomery as she pours out her original songs onto YouTube for a few dozen followers. Unbeknownst to her, the composer Kutiman watches her videos from an Israeli kibbutz and crafts music that will turn her into a viral sensation. Their collaboration “Stay Here” is one of 91 tracks eligible for this year's Oscar for Best Song. — Thom Powers and Raphaela Neihausen For more information, click here to visit the official film web site.
