As we approach the four-year anniversary of January 6th, I keep hearing Robin Williams's words from way back: “Reality, what a concept.”It is not reality but unreality that so many on the Left live by. Want to know why Joe Biden's age was covered up for so long? Why didn't anyone speak up against puberty blockers before? Why is box office for Hollywood films in near-total collapse and ratings for cable news shows in freefall? Look no further than Obama's unreality machine. In that unreality, Liz Cheney is not a formerly low-level rep from Wyoming with a famous last name who was voted out in a landslide but is instead an American hero who “put country over party” when she turned what was left of her career into a vendetta against Donald Trump. For that, she was love-bombed by the propaganda press and an instant star in the Democratic Party, the “one good Republican,” as they saw it. Mitt Romney and Adam Kinzinger would be relegated to supporting players. In the unreality, it makes sense for Joe Biden to bestow upon Liz Cheney the Citizens Medal to rapturous applause by the Left.TV appearances and glowing headlines in high-minded outlets like the New York Times reminded me of that line in the Robert Redford film Quiz Show, when they ponder why Charles Van Doren would have to cheat just to win. Because “he's not going to get on the cover of TIME Magazine as Mark Van Doren's son.”And so Liz, with her sensible suits and the authoritative tone she got from her father, played an important role in the greatest scam ever perpetrated on the American public, or at least one of them, that Donald Trump was so evil, so dangerous, so powerful he could destroy not just the Constitution but democracy itself. And that his supporters were cult-like obedient zombies who picked up their weapons and stormed the Capitol to hang Mike Pence and overthrow the government. Oh you mean the one protected by the most powerful military force the world has ever known? That government? In the unreality, you must accept that, or you will suffer severe social consequences. The truth was never going to be enough. They needed star witnesses like Cassidy Hutchinson to toss into the media churn to keep the story on Page One every day of the Biden presidency. They needed a Soviet-style primetime show trial wherein the Trump side was not even allowed a proper defense. General Milley and Benny Thompson made guest appearances to remind everyone of what it was all really about - WHITE RAGE.They must really think the American people are that stupid. They had lived through months of violent protesting all Summer, and they were supposed to clutch pearls at a riot at the Capitol? Yes, it was violent, but so were the protests in 2020. Ah, but those protests were “mostly peaceful” and justified in the unreality. It's the government's job to meet the needs of its people, not the people's job to meet the needs of the government. January 6th was a day our politicians should have recognized that their unreality machine left millions of people out. And it was those unheard voices that should have been heard that day. Yes, some of them got violent and breached the Capitol, and they should be punished fairly, but that isn't what our government did. They went to war on their own citizens, something the Left had never done, not since the Civil War. This is a public episode. Register your feedback here. Always good to hear from you!In lieu of my regular monthly report, I am here today to finish my list of the best books I've read this year. My final total for 2024 is going to come in at between 204 and 210 books — well off my ridiculous pace of 2023, but still, a lot. Obviously I have no hope of retaining everything or even anything from the vast majority of them. But casting a wide net makes it more likely that I find a few real delights. With a great deal of effort, I've whittled them to 10. Here they are. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by Betty SmithTombstone, by Tom ClavinThe Little Girl who Fought the Great Depression, by John F. Bob Stein, Atari's Encyclopedia Project Bob Stein worked at Atari Research for 18 months beginning in 1981. He was hired by Alan Kay. He worked almost exclusively on an encyclopedia project, a potential collaboration between Atari and Encyclopaedia Britannica that never went anywhere. I learned about Bob after he uploaded an item called The Atari Drawings to Internet Archive. It's a collection of nine colorful pencil drawings, drawn in 1982 by Disney animator Glen Keane. The drawings depict futuristic scenarios where people use a computerized encyclopedia to get information: for instance, "An earthquake wakes a couple in the middle of the night. The Intelligent Encyclopedia, connected to an online service, informs them of the severity of the earthquake and makes safety tips readily available." and "A mother and her children looking into a tidepool in Laguna ask the Intelligent Encyclopedia about the plants and animals that they see." Bob described the collection of art in his introduction to the document: "In 1982 executives from Warner, Inc., Atari's parent company, were scheduled to visit the Research Lab where the Encyclopedia Project was located. Brenda Laurel and I came up with these scenarios to give the execs a sense of what we were working toward. The drawings were made by Disney animator, Glen Keane. When you look at these, remember they were made 16 years before Google and 12 years before Yahoo, even 8 years before the earliest web-based search engines. That said, one of the most interesting things about these scenarios as seen today, is that with the exception of the image of the architect and the teacher none of them indicated any inkling that the most important element of the web to come was that it would bring people into contact with each other. What we see here is almost entirely people accessing content from a central server, no sense that we would be communicating with each other or uploading our own contributions to the collective culture. My own explanation for this lapse focuses on the print-era mentality that saw readers purely as consumers of content." Bob saved and scanned a large number of materials from his time at Atari, and uploaded them to Internet Archive. In addition to the scans of Keane's Atari Drawings, the documents include memos about the encyclopedia project and a transcript of a 1982 seminar for Atari Research featuring Charles Van Doren. Check the show notes for those links. After Atari, Bob was co-founder of The Criterion Collection, which restores and distributes important classic films; and co-founder of The Voyager Company, the first commercial multimedia CD-ROM publisher. In 2004, he co-founded The Institute for the Future of the Book, a think tank "investigating the evolution of discourse as it shifts from printed pages to networked screens." Happy Halloween from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk about one of the greats––Vincent Price! Our guest this episode––as with every Halloween episode––is Gavin Mevius, co-host of The Mixed Reviews Podcast of The Glitterjaw Queer Podcast Collective. Make sure you listen to their own comprehensive episode on Vincent Price as well! Our B-Sides today are: The Baron of Arizona, Champagne for Caesar, War-Gods of the Deep, and finally Cry of the Banshee. We talk about Price, his interesting life and family history, and the diversity of roles he took on, some reflected in the above B-Sides. Price's Nic Cage-like professional prolific-ness and “respect for the dollar” comes up, as does the real-life Charles Van Doren quiz show scandal from the ‘50s (the basis for the masterful Robert Redford film Quiz Show). There's mention of the growing respect of filmmaker Samuel Fuller over the years as well as an appreciation of the great Jacques Tourneur and a brief delve into underwater photography. We mention this insightful comedy observation from Tina Fey, this incredible Bill Hader impersonation (and this one), and Price's iconic work as Ratigan in The Great Mouse Detective. Last but not least, we discuss Gavin's upcoming, exciting The Q Division Podcast, A James Bond Movie Marathon. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) ends today, with many celebrations yesterday and today. It is Job Action Day, National Bison Day, and National Deviled Egg Day. Today we talk about the Spruce Goose, Charles Van Doren, and $1 drinks at Applebees.
I first learned about the SQ3R method while I was a student at the United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School. It is a strategy that has helped me as I worked through all my degree programs and during my career in the Air Force. It is a strategy that I think will help your students do better in their classes. I thought this strategy so important that I included it in my book, Read to Succeed: The Power of Books to Transform Your Life and Put You on the Path to Success. The SQ3R method simplifies the process that Mortimer Adler and Charles Van Doren outlined in their book, How to Read a Book: The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading. Adler and Van Doren provide a detailed process for analyzing a book. Most students will not go to such lengths; however, SQ3R will help them better read. SQ3R is a five-step process for active reading: surveying, questioning, reading, reciting, and reviewing. Students believe they are meeting the spirit and intent of a reading assignment when they passively read a chapter or article but they often fall short. However, they can build upon their knowledge when they actively read using a technique like SQ3R. This week we are going to take a closer look at SQ3R. Specifically, we will take a look at why you would want your students to use this strategy and how they should do it. Come learn more. “The greatest thing we can do is love our neighbor as ourselves.” — Miles McPherson In this episode, Brian interviews Miles McPherson about his book, “The Third Option: Hope for a Racially Divided Nation,” in which he explains that we must learn to see people not by the color of their skin, but as humans created in the image of God. Miles also talks about his time in the NFL, how he overcame his drug addiction and how he went on to found the Rock Church in San Diego. YOU WILL LEARN: How Miles has navigated his faith journey. How he built his organization. His top three tips for honoring somebody. I mean, I talk about my sins all the time.” — Miles McPherson “As a church, we're trying to bring hope to every person we can, loving people where they're at.” — Miles McPherson “Whenever you're going through a trial and you wonder where God is, just remember that during the test the teacher is always silent.” — Anonymous “Be a servant. And understand what service you are providing to your customer.” — Miles McPherson “This book is about honoring what we have in common.” — Miles McPherson “We're all made in the image of God. We're all made for the purpose and with the ability to have loving relationships with each other.” — Miles McPherson “This book is going to teach us how to recognize the blind spots that we have; how to get over the fear that we have, the ignorance that we have; how to understand, how to love correctly. It’s going to give us tools to honor one another and develop stronger relationships with each other, no matter what we look like.” — Miles McPherson “When people think about having a race conversation, they always think about, well, I would assume, a race confrontation. Really, it should be a race consultation.” — Miles McPherson “Speak to people with a posture of learning and not assuming.” — Miles McPherson “In our country, we're looking at people, we're thinking everybody's a monster. We end our two-part look at the quiz show scandals with the most infamous example of all -- the NBC program "Twenty-One." Contestants on the show were deliberately given answers to questions, directed to lose games and were even coached on how, for maximum dramatic effect, to hesitate when answering a question. The show's most popular contestant, Charles Van Doren, was celebrated for his intellect and humility and rewarded with a job on NBC-TV. But he ended up revealing his role in the hoax during a dramatic congressional hearing, and his reputation was forever tarnished.
