Speak to anyone from the 1980s punk scene in Los Angeles and they'll tell you: Johanna Went is an underground legend. While the bands like Black Flag, Fear and X were thrashing out their three chords and the truth, Went would take to the stage at clubs like The Masque, Club Lingerie and Hong Kong Cafe and perform between the live shows. The crowd hadn't seen anything like it before. She wasn't a punk musician per se but the “hyena of performance art”, whose transgressive spectacles of New Wave theatre, experimental noise, elaborate and crude costumes, chaotic rituals, and gory props like pig heads and fake blood – lots of blood – built a cult following and predated Lady Gaga's meat dress and Peaches' raucous stage antics and costumes by decades. Johanna's shows were wild, depraved and often grotesque, boldly taking on themes like female pleasure and menstruation. Take her 1988 performance Passion Container, in which she pulled giant bloodied tampons out of a silk vagina and chucked them into the crowd – this was pre-riot grrrl and before L7's legendary tampon-flinging performance at Reading Festival in 1992. Many aren't sure where Johanna Went went but The Last Bohemians: LA, supported by Audio-Technica, found her living a quieter life, in the beach town of Ventura, California. Across her garden table, she looks back at her transgressive work and talks about the magic of the 1980s punk scene, growing up an outsider, the beauty of performance art and why embracing ageing is the punkest move of all. Your host Tom Austin-Morgan is back to let you know what's been going on since the last episode and what you can expect from the next one... or possibly two! There's also all the news from the world of punk including stories about KRS-One, Steve Ignorant, Alice Bag, Richie Ramone, Loose Articles, Sick Of It All, Blondie and The Damned, Bauhaus, Shane MacGowan, The Sewer Cats, John Doe, MC5, Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, Weezer, The Last Gang, The Lunachicks, The Gaslight Anthem and Roxy Music. There's also a load of acts that have cancelled their gigs in Ukraine and Russia due to the continuing war there and, sadly, there have been a number of deaths as well. Additionally, there are reviews of three albums: Love Sux by Avril Lavigne (Is she cynically going back to pop punk from her more recent acoustic pop sound due to the resugence of early-2000s pop punk?), Torpedo by Feeder (have they finally gone back to the heavy grunge of their early albums like they keep saying they will?) and Never Let Me Go by Placebo (is this their best album since The Meds?). By sure to get in touch on social media or email and do to Apple Music to leave a rating and review, it's the podcast's second birthday, after all! Until next time, take care and stay safe. n addition to being integral parts of the early Los Angeles punk rock scene, Alice and Greg also had successful careers - Alice as a school teacher and writer and Greg as a hospitality executive and photographer. But our area of focus in this episode is what happened when they decided to retire, and realized they didn't have the money to do it in California. Not only did they decide to move to Mexico City, they also made the decision to document the process for all to see. We talk about the challenges, exciting developments, lifehacks learned from punk rock and how they've used social media to share it all. Experimental art-pop and noize band Xiu Xiu's single "Rumpus Room" found me on a particular low day in early 2021. I remember puttng it on, cranking the volume up and jumping around like a sugar-ed up toddler in a boucy castle. There's hints that the song is about more serious things but in that moment I needed joy and bouce—and that's what I found. Jamie Stewart began Xiu Xiu 20 years ago. The band has seen many configurations and different members. For the last decade, Xiu Xiu's been a duo of Stewart with Angela Seo. Xiu Xiu's music is often confronting either thematically or in the noize elements that Jamie employs. Diving into it, is its own reward. Their latest is OH NO, an album of duets. It features Sharon Van Etten, Angus Andrew from Australian band, Liars, Twin Shadow, Owen Pallett and LA's First Wave punk pioneer, Alice Bag.Many thanks for making this possible — Thank you Jamie for all the noize, madness, mayhem and beauty. And that infectious laugh. To Kill Rock Stars for use of "I Luv The Valley OH" and "Apple For A Brain." And to Polyvinyl for use of all other songs. To Catherine Herrick from Motor Mouth Media for media support.Songs Featured: "Rumpus Room," "I Luv the Valley OH," "I Luv Abortion," "Apple For A Brain," "Honey Suckle," "Sad Mezcalita," "Saint Dymphna," "I Dream Of Someone Else Entirely," "Antz," and "Bottle of Rum."To share your thoughts on this episode, email: celine.teoblockey@undertheradarmag.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In the Red Records was founded by Larry Hardy Thirty years ago. He's been the sole owner and operator the entire time putting out records by such notable acts as Jon Spencer, Ty Segall, Kid Congo, Alice Bag, Jay Reatard, King Khan and one of my all-time personal favorites The Strange Boy. For the record the list of artists Larry has put out is too long for these show notes. Larry joins me in a conversation about his early days as a Punk fan seeing such bands as The Germs, to getting the itch to start a label and releasing his first single with The Gories to how he grew the In The Red to be the well respected Punk label that it is today. Larry also shares a great story about a week long Party King Khan threw in his LA home while he was away on vacation. On Episode 11 “Not For Regular Listeners” we spoke with Rikki Styxx of Death Valley Girls and The Two Tens. She tells us about the love and admiration she has for the punk rock legend Alice Bag, “I have this connection with her, I just love her so much.” Kat remembers and tells a story about the time she did Alice Bags make-up for a show! Rikki then shares a strange encounter that she and her husband both experienced at different times at their home in Corona CA; these encounters took place after the passing of her grandmother. Rikki also shares some very personal encounters that she experiences while she is sleeping, “I don’t share these stories with just anyone...they are not for regular listeners.” Her husband joins in on the conversation to collaborate on a particular story where he found her “levitating in bed...” We have added two new questions for our guests of season 2: 1. If you can solve any unsolved case/murder, which would you choose? 2. What would you choose as your last meal?
