Send us a textIn 1992, South Carolina featured a heated Senate race that featured two very experienced and respected political figures in incumbent senator Ernest Hollings and his challenger former Congressman Tommy Hartnett. It would be the toughest challenge for Hollings in decades because not only was Hartnett a formidable challenger but the political dynamics in South Carolina were changing fast as the state grew more conservative and more Republican. But Ernest Hollings was a towering political figure. He had been at the forefront of political crusades to feed the hungry, keep the military strong, protect manufacturing jobs, and stop the massive amounts of money flowing into political races. Holling's fit the bill that had often been how South Carolinian's described liking their politicians, "Ernest Hollings fought hard for what he believed in, even when he was wrong." That always appealed to people in the state even when they disagreed with the Senator. His opponent in the race was former Representative Tommy Hartnett, the former congressman from the South Carolina First District, which included Charleston S.C. where the Senator was from too. Hartnett was a champion for fiscal responsibility, supported term limits for Congress, and fought to keep the budget under control. He had arrived in Washington D.c. as part of the Reagan Revolution in 1980 and served for six years in Congress before deciding to come home and run for Lieutenant Governor. After nearly, two and half decades in public life, first as South Carolina State House member, he lost the race for Lieutenant Governor and this was his attempt at a comeback. This was an exciting race between two formidable men. In this episode, we will look at the careers of both men and their thoughts on Government and what they both feel is the problems our nation at the time faced. Many of those issues still plague us now. In the end, we will focus in on the legendary career of the incumbent, a man considered a giant of American Politics both at home and in washington D.C. He became famous for his southern Charleston drawl, his towering physical frame, and his often blunt, fiery positions, on issues, always on the side of the little man he had been sent to the Senate to represent. Then in our next episode we will present the South Carolina United States Senate debate and let me warn you, it will be exciting, but unless you are from South Carolina you may need an interpreter to understand them. This week's episode is a special one for us! Rick and Andy sit down with our very own Sarita Edgerton, and her husband, Mike, to discuss the incredible underdog story of how they, with the help of their campaign volunteers, pulled together and helped her win the Republican seat in the South Carolina State House of Representatives for their district. Months ago, Sarita felt led by the Holy Spirit to run for office, although she had no previous political experience. From there, she and Mike created a strategy and began going door to door all across their district to meet voters face to face. It's a powerful story of overcoming negative campaigns and just plain old hard work to make a difference in their community and ultimately win the election! If you'd like to help support this podcast, please visit our Patreon page at: www.patreon.com/theburrosofbereaIf you'd like to learn more about us, please visit our website at: www.burrosofberea.comCheck out our new sponsor's website to assist you in finding real supply chain solutions, warehouse management, or customization of products for your business! WE'RE BACK!!! In this new season of Stepping Toward Justice (@step2justice) Host Sarah A. Ford (@sarahafordesq) and Producer Zeke Stephenson (@zekestephenson) take a deep dive into last week's Victims Matter Rally that was hosted by SCVAN and SCADVASSA and took place on the front steps of the South Carolina State House. We chat about the Bowen Turner case being back in the news and where we've been these past few months. We are grateful to the Luna Shark team for providing the video of the rally. As we discussed in the episode, we are looking at a significant cut to the VOCA funds that many of us rely on to serve victims. We need to advocate that the legislature provides the SC Attorney General with additional funds so that victim services providers don't face devastating cuts that will ultimately hurt victims. Please click this link https://secure.madd.org/page/64675/action/1 and add your voice to ours. How often has a victim said to you, "I could not have done this without you?" If we lose our VOCA funding, many victims will have to walk their paths alone. We can't allow that.Support the show

Welcome to More Than Medicine. Today's episode navigates the political waters with our guest, Representative Adam Morgan of District 20 in South Carolina State House. We're inviting you into our conversation about the birth of the South Carolina Freedom Caucus, its strategic conservative goals, and the challenges faced from lobbyists and special interests. It's a compelling tale of standing firm in conservative values, even when it's not the popular path.Do you ever ask yourself, what's happening in the political landscape of South Carolina? In our discussion with Adam, we shed light on the presence of corruption and influence from lobbyists, stressing the importance of an informed public. As we switch gears, we learn about Adam's plans for gunning a congressional seat in Washington - a conversation that reveals his staunchly conservative track record and his aspirations for strategic state growth. We underscore the need for resilient, principle-driven leaders in our government, a belief Adam aligns with as he plans to represent the 4th congressional district. Our conversation takes a more personal turn as we talk about Adam's objectives for border security and Department of Defense funding, should he be elected. A pressing issue we broach is the legislation related to vaccines for federal employees, a topic that is sure to ruffle a few feathers. We also bring to the fore the topic of non-traditional medicine, and the power of simply listening. All this and more in an episode that promises a journey through the intertwined worlds of politics, medicine, and strategic conservative growth.https://www.jacksonfamilyministry.comhttps://bobslone.com/home/podcast-production/

Richard "Alex" Murdaugh, a once-renowned South Carolina lawyer found guilty of the 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, is again making headlines. On the grounds of the South Carolina State House in Columbia, Murdaugh's defense attorneys, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, are scheduled to convene a press conference at 2:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday. They are expected to file a motion pleading for a retrial of this widely publicized case. The attorneys will reportedly unveil this new evidence, which, until now, remains a mystery, but they firmly believe it could be pivotal in warranting a fresh trial. This latest twist in the saga of the Murdaugh family comes just a week after Murdaugh faced the stripping of some of his inmate privileges. He reportedly fed information without permission to the Fox Nation documentary titled "The Fall of the House of Murdaugh," leading to the punitive action from prison officials. However, the legal battles are just one facet of the Murdaugh story. Emotionally charged revelations continue to emerge from family members, indicating that the case's implications run deep, affecting many lives. Buster Murdaugh, Richard's surviving son, recently opened up in a candid interview with Fox Nation anchor, Martha MacCallum. He asserted his unwavering belief in his father's innocence. MacCallum posed the question that many have wondered: whether Buster ever harbored doubts about his father's role in the tragic events of June 7th. MacCallum probed, "Did you ever go there and say, 'Maybe it's possible that he did this?'" To which Murdaugh responded unequivocally, "No." He further explained his conviction, saying, "Because I think that I hold a very unique perspective that nobody else in that courtroom ever held. There are always two sides to the story. Now, they can pick which one they want to believe, but I think there's still a heck of a lot that still needs to be answered about what happened on June the 7th." Murdaugh's conviction was secured after only three hours of jury deliberation, culminating in a sentence of two consecutive life terms. Given the gravity of the case and the significant media coverage it has attracted, the announcement of possible new evidence and the motion for a retrial is anticipated to reignite public and media interest. The evidence, which remains under wraps for now, could potentially reshape public opinion and alter the course of legal proceedings. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In this episode we start out with one of Congressman John Jenrette's more fun legacies, the comedy troupe "The Capital Steps" , which entertained people all over the nation for nearly four decades until they finally shutdown during the Covid 19 pandemic. They were laugh out loud funny and I had the privilege of seeing them many times through the years and had not known the tie to John Jenrette (They were DC Staffers who took their name from the Playboy reported liaison Jenrette and his wife had on the steps of the Capital) until they sang about it at performance I attended in Washington D.C. in 2015. This episode is also the only one we put together after Congressman Jenrette died, which occurred near the end of the production of our series. I thought it was important to read into the record his beautifully written obituary that covers so many of the accomplishments he was able to make happen during his time in Congress and in the South Carolina State House. We also wanted to take a moment to ask for a call to action for our listeners to let their legislators and local elected officials know that you would like to see the congressman finally get the recognition he deserves for all his years of service as a representative, congressman, and as a citizen in our community. He really did help lay the foundation for much of the phenomenal growth and success our region of South Carolina has enjoyed over the past four decades. Finally, we allow John Jenrette to have the final word in this section of our series focused on him this season. We have the last interview he gave near the end of his 2019 book tour for the book "The Capital Steps and Missteps" about his life and career. It is a poignant interview and an honest one, in which he talks about his accomplishments and mistakes. It is also an interview in which his illness is very apparent. But I thought it important to share it with you and important to allow this podcast docuseries focused on his life and career, give John Jenrette the last word on his remarkable life and career. I want to simply say a thank you to Dianne Devaughn Stokes, and her husband Chuck Stokes, for allowing us to use the interview and their personal work in editing it into such a powerful final talk with the Congressman. John Jenrette really lived an incredible life and it has been a privilege and an honor to be able to share the story with you, we hope you learned some things you may not have known and enjoyed the trip as we went through it all. From here on out, we will be focusing on the Administration of Jimmy Carter in the remainder of our 10th Season. History Nerds UnitedLet's make history fun again! This episode for our Host Randal Wallace may be the most fun of any we have done. It tells the story of the life of the Congressional District and region of South Carolina that was the 6th District of South Carolina. It opens after ABSCAM has ended John Jenrette's career and everyone involved is moving on from the scandal. The District was represented by John Napier for a single term, then by a Florence , South Carolina Democrat named Robin Tallon for a number of years. But after the 1990 census the former 6th District is divided up geographically and its political strength evaporates. Tallon steps down as James Clyburn is elected to serve the new 6th District which engulfs Florence County. While Horry County is placed in the South Carolina First District where it is dominated by Charleston S.C. Over the next twenty years the region has several different Congressman all but one of which is from Charleston County with various interest levels for what is happening in Horry and Georgetown Counties. We are represented by Tommy Hartnett, Arthur Ravenell, Mark Sanford, Henry Brown (Berkely County) , and Tim Scott. Then in 2010 everything changed. A new census led to a big fight in the South Carolina State House as the state was awarded a new 7th Congressional District. We will see the maneuverings by the man who could rightfully be called the Father of the 7th district, Alan Clemmons, lead to the South Carolina Pee Dee Region finally getting its seat back in which the region was represented together. That is where the fun part for our Host begins as we relive that very first race for Congress and the election of that first 7th district Congressman ensues. which eventually led to the election of Tom Rice. A race in which our host, Randal Wallace, was a small part as a candidate for Congress. We will also see the rise of our new Congressman Russell Fry, who attained the office just at the beginning of this year , 2024, after his endorsement by former President Donald Trump, and his historic election victory. All of which will lead us back to a final look at the remarkable life and contributions to our region of our first, and until this year, only Horry County native Congressman John Jenrette. His career was a rollercoaster ride of wild excess, historic success, and an enormously dramatic and historic fall, all of which happened in a pivotal 6 year period that laid the foundation for a region of the country that can now lay claim to the title the fastest growing area in the nation. This week, the whole episode IS the Bridging The Gap Segment. We conclude with part 2 of Frederick Douglass's Denouncement Speech of 1888. In Columbia SC at the capitol building on June 27th, 2015 Thomas Washington, Tribal Raine and Max Parthas recorded the reading of "I Denounce the So-Called Emancipation as a Stupendous Fraud" by Fredrick Douglas (1888) in a 9 part series. They are powerful eye-opening and moving presentations that can be used for education purposes with students, viewing and conversation with friends or family, or just to show someone the truth. On a historical level, the readings were done June 27th at the South Carolina Statehouse. The day after Reverend and state Senator Clementa Pinckney, (one of nine victims in the June 17, 2015, shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC), lay in state at the capitol with his body having to pass under the rebel flag. This was the same day and same place Bree Newsome cut the confederate flag down just yards away. The monument we recorded at is one of the few in America dedicated to the history of the African Diaspora. In the center of the display is a marble dais with the 4 stones of the 4 African nations where Enslaved Peoples in SC originated. A direct connection to those ancestral lands. Our intention was to speak to the state and the nation using not our words, but those of a man who was arguably the greatest statesman we have ever know. His words ring true today. A sad truth that most have never heard. Hidden and muted on purpose because it didn't fit the false narrative. The productions include news clips of current events (at the time) which drive all of his points home like a prophet. During this black history month of 2023, we will play the Denouncement series on Abolition Today for the first time in its entirety. This week, the whole episode IS the Bridging The Gap Segment.
In this episode , we look back at John Jenrette's fateful decision to run for the South Carolina State House. He was living in North Myrtle Beach and struggling as a Lawyer. In that day lawyers could not advertise and John Jenrette was trying to figure out a way to get his name out to the public. He was, he said, tired of getting paid in collard greens. It was a decision that would change his life forever. He won. That lifted him to position of Chairman of the Horry County State House delegation. He was 28 years old and the system of that day was entirely different than what we have in the state today. There were no County Councils and the state senators ran the county. In that respect, John Jenrette was sitting in a really good position, he was young, energetic, and the cousin of the sitting State Senator in Horry County, James Stevens. It was a relationship that would pay dividends. In this episode, we will hear about how under Jenrette's leadership, along with Senator James Stevens, they went to work to build roads, bridges, and develop a fledgling school, then known as Coastal Carolina Community College. It was quite the ride for a young man in a hurry. It was this extraordinary run in the State Legislature that would be the foundation for his later runs for Congress against an entrenched , powerful incumbent. Then we learn about the distant family tie between John Jenrette, a man of French Huguenot descent, and the leader of another nation on the North American Continent , Pierre Trudeau , the Prime Minister of Canada. Jenrette enjoys talking about his family and their long history in America and the Carolinas. We will also be introduced to one of John Jenrette's closest friends and a legendary political ally whose career was as large as any in modern South Carolina history, Senator Dick Elliott of North Myrtle Beach, S.C. We will look back at their friendship, its importance in the rise of John Jenrette, and Dick Elliot's own outsized career both in politics, in business, and its impact on our State of South Carolina and through out the Pee Dee region. Dick Elliott was as responsible for the rise of the Grand Strand in the Golf business, the tourism business, the improved road system, and the growth in Real Estate as anyone in the state, for he was a leader in every one of those industries as well as politics for nearly a half century. In this episode we look back as John Jenrette lays the groundwork for one of the great upsets in the history of South Carolina politics against Representative John McMillan, who had served 16 terms in Congress. That will be the next story we will tell. It's Thursday, February 16th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Indian pastor remain in jail A pastor in northern India remains in jail three months after winning bail. Hindu extremists filed new false charges against him to keep him in prison. Last Tuesday, Pastor Vijay Masih spent his 100th day in jail. Masih leads an Evangelical Church of India congregation in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Under the state's anti-conversion laws, the pastor and nearly 50 other Christians in the area were arrested last April. Masih's wife, Preeti, told Morning Star News, “Police did not ask us anything. They have only heard one-sided complaints from the opposition party, and under pressure from them they have carried out arrests.” Turkey earthquake death toll 41,000 The death toll from last Monday's 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Turkey and Syria has risen to over 41,000. Tens of thousands of people are still missing. Christian aid groups are on the ground helping with the relief effort. Samaritan's Purse deployed a 52-bed mobile medical facility to Antakya, historically known as Antioch, the area where believers were first called Christians, according to Acts 11:26. Among other services, the hospital will include two emergency operating rooms and a pharmacy. Following a February 9 airlift from Atlanta, their team quickly began raising the field hospital on property surrounding the 1,100-bed Hatay State Hospital, which was irreparably crippled and made unsafe by the earthquakes. The Samaritan's Purse team is urgently building on the open space of the adjoining parking area and preparing to receive patients at the mobile medical facility later this week. The loss of the region's key healthcare facility further compounds the desperation felt by communities who've experienced unimaginable loss, grief, and the destruction of all they had. Melanie Wubs, Medical Response Coordinator with Samaritan's Purse, asked for prayer as they meet the needs in Turkey. WUBS: “My name is Melanie Wubs, Medical Response Coordinator with Samaritan's Purse. I'm here in southeast Turkey where the effects of the earthquake this week have been devastating. Samaritan's Purse has been working with a partner here. “We've been requested by the Ministry of Health to set up an emergency field hospital in this spot where this 1,000-bed facility behind me has suffered severe infrastructure damage and is not functional. We ask for your prayers for the people here in Turkey and also for our team as we move quickly to meet the needs.” To make a donation to help Samaritan's Purse pay for the field hospital, the medical supplies, and the transportation to Turkey of the 75-member team, click on a special link in our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Polling on Christian nationalism The Public Religion Research Institute released a new survey on Americans' views of Christian nationalism. The study measured Christian nationalism by the degree of support for statements like “The U.S. government should declare America a Christian nation,” or “U.S. laws should be based on Christian values.” Ten percent of Americans agreed almost entirely with such statements; 19% agreed but not strongly; 39% disagreed; and 29% strongly disagreed. Evangelical Protestants were the most likely to agree with Christian nationalism, while Roman Catholics and mainline Protestants were among the least likely to agree. Psalm 33:12 says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom He has chosen as His heritage!” British church leaders reporting fellow Christians for anti-“gay” stand Church leaders in England are now reporting Christians to the police for opposing sexually perverted lifestyles. Last year, Christopher Cocksworth, a bishop in the Church of England, reported “offending” tweets made by Sam Margrave to authorities. Margrave is an elected member of the Church of England's General Synod. He won his election on a platform of standing for Biblical truth on life, death, sex, and marriage. Police did open an investigation into Margrave, but have since closed the case. He told The Daily Signal recently that church leaders are still trying to silence him: “There's a vocal minority that control the church and are using its resources to bully me into silence.” California fires teacher over her objection to fake pronouns Last month, a school district in California dismissed a Christian teacher who took issue with the school's gender policies. Jessica Tapia was a physical education teacher at the Jurupa Unified School District. She refused to allow biological males in girl's locker rooms. She also disagreed with the district's policy to not tell parents if their children wanted to pretend to be the opposite sex. Tapia told Fox News she chose her faith over her job. TAPIA: “It was crazy to be in the position where I realized that I couldn't be a Christian and a teacher -- is what that felt like.” Matthew 6:24 says, “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” House Judiciary subpoenaed Big Tech executives Yesterday, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee subpoenaed chief executives of big tech companies. The companies include Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft. Republican Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio chairs the committee. GOP House members are concerned the companies are suppressing the free speech of conservatives. Jordan's office said in a statement: “These subpoenas are the first step in holding Big Tech accountable.” South Carolina's Abolish Abortion February 25th rally And finally, the pro-life group Abolish Abortion South Carolina is announcing a rally at the state's capital of Columbia next week. It will be held at the South Carolina Statehouse on Saturday, February 25 at 11:00 am. Speakers will include Republican Representative Rob Harris and Pastor Jeff Durbin. Love Life Ministries will lead a prayer-walk afterward. Harris has pre-filed a bill called the South Carolina Prenatal Equal Protection Act of 2023. The bill would protect all people, including unborn babies, beginning at conception, under the state's homicide laws. On November 14, 2021, on a Sunday, Horry County, South Carolina, lost a towering giant in the history of the region. Lois Eargle was a trailblazer, never politically correct, and never afraid to speak her mind. She was an unabashedly proud public servant for the people of Horry County and most of all a servant of her Lord, Jesus Christ. She opened doors for young people, an especially women in politics, as the first woman elected to the South Carolina State House from Horry County and then the first woman elected Horry County Auditor. By the time her long, nearly 50 year career was through, she retired this summer in July of 2021, Horry County had not only a female Horry County Auditor replacing her but women held the Treasurer's Office, the Probate Judge's office, a former Chairman of County Council, another legislator from Horry County from Socastee was a woman and the Mayor's of Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, and Conway were all women plus countless members of city councils all across the county, and a former Mayor of Atlantic Beach were women, and even a former Governor and prospect for President from South Carolina was a women. In countless ways Lois Eargle led the way, she may not have always done it perfectly, but she surely did it in style and one thing everyone will agree on is that Lois Eargle won't be forgotten when they write the history of the Independent Republic of Horry County for the nearly 50 years she stood tall on her times. On a personal note, she was an enormous influence on my life and career from the time I met her when I was 13 years old and she was a candidate for the United States Congress. She would go on to be my employer, a mentor, an advisor, an occasional adversary but always a friend and someone whom I could always count on for help if I needed it. I was, as was almost everyone who ever knew Lois Eargle, always, always star struck. As the Carly Simon song says "Nobody Does it Better" and in our little corner of the world that song described no one in the political world better than Lois Eargle. So here is our tribute to her. (We would like to thank Greg Everett , Dianne Devaughn and Chuck Stokes for allowing us to use all of their available interviews to put this tribute together as well as WBTW, WPDE and the campaign commercial archives of Congressman Tom Rice. This show would not have been possible with out the use of their material )

On June 26th 2015 President Barack Obama delivered the eulogy at the funeral of the Reverend Clementa C. Pinckney, the senior pastor of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston and a South Carolina State Senator.Reverend Pinckney and 8 other Black church members had been murdered a week earlier during Bible Study in a racially motivated mass shooting perpetrated by a white supremacist. The Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church is one of the oldest Black churches in the United States, and it has long been a center for organizing events related to civil rights. Founded in 1816, the church played an important role in the history of South Carolina, during slavery and Reconstruction, during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s and in the Black Lives Matter movement. It is the oldest African Methodist Episcopal Church in the South, often referred to as "Mother Emanuel". Rev. Pinckney, was a well known activist who had held rallies after the shooting of Walter Scott by a white police officer two months earlier, in nearby North Charleston. As a state senator, Reverend Pinckney had pushed for legislation requiring police to wear body cameras. The Reverend and his church were targeted because of their history and role in civil rights activism. With a rousing eulogy and a chorus of “Amazing Grace,” President Barack Obama called on the country to honor the nine victims of the South Carolina church massacre by working toward racial healing. He said that included removing the Confederate battle flag from the South Carolina State House grounds.“It's true, the flag did not cause these murders,” The President said, but “we all have to acknowledge the flag has always represented more than just ancestral pride. For many, black and white, that flag was a reminder of systemic oppression and racial subjugation. We see that now.”“By taking down that flag,” he said, “we express God's grace.” But I don't think God wants us to stop there.“On July 6, 2015, the South Carolina Senate voted to remove the Confederate flag from display outside the South Carolina State House. Make no mistake - the protests we have seen in the last month are a continuation of that struggle. And none of us can stop - none of us should rest until we dismantle and remove every symbol and every fact of the systemic oppression and racial subjugation that President Obama described in his eulogy of Reverend Pinckney. New legislative district lines will be drawn based on the final 2020 census numbers expected to be released in mid-August of this year. Those lines can be drawn to intentionally increase or decrease voters' power based solely on their political party or other factors like race and income. This month SC WIL COO, Sara Ballard, talks with South Carolina Senator Mia McLeod and South Carolina Representative Jenny Horne about redistricting at the legislative level and how changes in legislative districts impact citizens and how they are represented. We hope that Senator McLeod and Representative Horne's perspectives as legislators as well as incumbent candidates whose districts were redrawn following the 2010 Census will encourage you to contact your legislators to advocate for fairness and transparency in the decision-making process. This interview was recorded on May 14, 2021, prior to Senator McLeod's public announcement of her candidacy for Governor of South Carolina. For the latest information about redistricting, stay tuned to our social media channels @SCWomenLead, and subscribe to our mailing list to receive redistricting news and fair voting alerts in your inbox. Jenny Anderson Horne is a former Republican member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, representing District 94 from 2008 to 2016. In a passionate speech on the House floor after the 2015 murder of nine black members of a Bible study at a Charleston church, Horne advocated for removal of the Confederate battle flag from South Carolina State House grounds, where it had flown since 1962. The speech is credited with helping to change the course of the debate and lead to the vote to remove the flag. Jenny is from Summerville, South Carolina. Mia S. McLeod is a Democratic member of the South Carolina State Senate, serving District 22 since 2017. On her election, she was the first woman and first African-American to win her Senate seat. She previously served as Representative of District 79 in the South Carolina State House from 2011 to 2016. Mia is from Bennettsville and now resides in Northeast Columbia.
In this episode, Aidan attends a protest at the South Carolina Statehouse organized to bring attention to the military coup in Burma (also known as Myanmar). The coup, which took place on February 1, 2021, sparked global outcry against the military regime and against the international community for the lack of resistance. In Columbia, a group of people, mostly resettled refugees from Burma, hold protests some Sunday afternoons to call attention to the military's atrocities against its own citizens. Liked this episode? Today’s 30-minute walk is dedicated to a living legend, the fearless Bree Newsome Bass.On June 27, 2015, Bree Newsome committed one of the greatest acts of civil disobedience seen in our lifetime when she scaled the 30-foot flag pole on the grounds of the South Carolina State House and removed the confederate flag. Carried literally by the faith of her ancestors, who’d been enslaved in South Carolina. Bree, a woman of just 30 with no training, made the ascent of a lifetime. She climbed up the flagpole in a defiant act of bravery and snatched down a flag that was raised as a symbol of protest against the civil rights movement and the fight for Black liberation. The saying goes, “If not us, who? If not now, when?” After nine Black members of Emanuel AME Church were massacred during bible study by a white supremacist, Bree Newsome said she realized that now was the time for courage and she never looked back. There is so much to learn from this young Black warrior queen, who upon reaching the top of the flag pole yelled down to the police below saying, “You come against me with hatred and oppression and violence. I come against you in the name of God. This flag comes down today.” That was some Miss Celie level, "until you do right by me," energy that unleashed a wave of justice that five years later is still reverberating across this country as monuments to the confederacy continue to fall.Bree Newsome is about that life and we're going to get into it on today’s call! And by the end, you’ll be walking away with some strategies and ideas to not only help the revolution but to also start toppling the personal monuments in your own life. The monuments you have built to things and people that never served you and should no longer be allowed to take up space in your life.Join the second edition of GirlTrek’s Black History Bootcamp at blackhistorybootcamp.com to receive specially curated emails with inspiring words, survival tips, speeches + dedicated songs to listen to for each episode. "N" is for Niernsee, John Randolph [1823-1885] and Niernsee, Francis McHenry [1849-1899]. Architects. John Niernsee was the principal architect for the design and construction of the South Carolina State House. His son Frank followed in his father's footsteps by finishing the interior of the State House and operating a successful architectural practice in Columbia. In 1855 the elder Niernsee came to take charge of the troubled new State House project, but his work stopped by the Civil War. In the 1880s, the legislature decided to resume work on the building and re-hired John Randolph Niernsee, but he died shortly after returning to Columbia. In 1888 Frank Niernsee was hired to complete the interior of the building and did so within two years. Frank Niernsee designed a number of churches, schools, and private residences in Columbia.
After the Civil War, a surprising coalition tried to remake the United States into a real multiracial democracy for the first time. The series script editor is Loretta Williams. Interviews with Victoria Smalls, Brent Morris, Eric Foner, Kidada Williams, Bobby Donaldson, and Edward Baptist. Monday marks four years since 12 members of the historically black Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, welcomed a young white man to join their bible study group. When their eyes shut for a closing prayer, he pulled out a Glock pistol and fired 77 rounds, killing nine people. In the days and weeks that followed, the nation learned about the lives of the people killed in the racially motivated massacre. Families of some victims told the shooter they forgave him. Amid an outpouring of support for survivors, South Carolina legislators debated and voted to remove the Confederate flag from the South Carolina State House.

A bill in the South Carolina Statehouse could close the state's only two year historically black college. The S.C. House passed its version of the state’s $9 billion budget including a proviso that would temporarily close Denmark Technical College and re-open it as an area trade school. The proviso would close the college and a nine-member committee will study it. The findings then will be reported to several committees by October 1, 2019. I went to Denmark, South Carolina and spoke with a number of leaders including Bamberg Mayor Nancy Foster, Denmark Mayor Dr. Gearld Wright, and Attorney Evert Comer Jr on their thoughts when they first received word of the proviso, the proposed flight school for Denmark Tech, and if turning it into a trade school would be a viable option.

Since the early 1960s the Confederate battle flag had been flying at the South Carolina State House--at first, on the Capitol dome; then, as the result of an NAACP boycott of businesses in the state, it was moved to the Confederate Soldiers monument. On July 10, 2015, as a result of growing public pressure following the shooting deaths of the pastor and eight parishioners of Emanuel A. M. E. Church in Charleston, the flag was removed to a museum.
Adorned with over 44,000 pounds of copper, the South Carolina statehouse has a long and weathered past.
The morning after Dylann Roof murdered nine people in the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church of Charleston, South Carolina, all of the flags on South Carolina State House grounds went to half-staff—except for one. So began the current nationwide debate about the Confederate flag. More chillingly, Roof had draped himself in that flag in Facebook photos and he [read more]
I am so sick of all of this…Nine people were killed at Mother Emmanuel African Methodist Church in South Carolina; not unlike the bombing of on September 15, 1963 murder of four Black girls in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama. "The 16th Street Baptist Church bombing was an act of white supremacist terrorism which occurred at the Black 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama on Sunday, September 15, 1963, when four members of the Ku Klux Klan planted a minimum of 15 sticks of dynamite attached to a timing device beneath the front steps of the church killing the girls." So what's so different 50 years later? We have to come to the understanding that this country and those who enslaved us, did not meant for us to live, thrive and prosper. Now, people have signed a petition to have the confederate flag removed from the South Carolina Statehouse, but will this do any good or is it just a crumb in the mouth of a hungry man? Tonight we will talk about the coded language of racism White Supremacy. In addtion: Racism in the Dominican Republic? You Betcha! Live show 661-467-2407 and press 1 to talk
The NRA, which is only a small handful of people, runs this country from top to bottom. They control Congress like a puppet-master. Violence runs rampant throughout this nation with the unbridled distribution and sanction of hand guns and fire arms of all manner, especially high-powered military assault rifles! Wayne La Pierre ought to have his "Pierre" detached from his carcas! We live in a Banana Republic. Those so-called Banana Republics in South America actually have far fewer murders than here in America - the land of "American Exceptionalism". I think it's going to take a "Million Women" March on our nation's capital to ever stem the flow of this insidious death-producing madness! Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose! We have nothing to lose but our INSANITY! Come on Americans, Cowboy-Up ---- let's push back and strangle the NRA in its crib! Hell, the game is changing right in front of our very eyes – for today – Monday, June 22, 2015 – the Republican Governor of South Carolina – Nikki Haley – succumbed to the pressure to take down the Confederate flag from the South Carolina State House – and – while appearing before the cameras with a diverse group of South Carolina lawmakers – agreed to do JUST THAT! Next Stop – The NRA!
