This conversation covers topics like sexual abuse that might be sensitive to some listeners. Karen Rain was an advanced Ashtanga student who experienced almost daily sexual abuse while working with K. Pattabhi Jois. In this interview, she shares her opinions on cults, yoga, gurus and trauma-informed practice in a way that will stark critical thinking. She speaks about her experiences in India, why she decided not to return and the painful reasons as to why she quit the practice altogether. She also comments on the people who have supported her and the devoted students who participated in the covering up and silencing of stories like her own. Karen also speaks about her relationship with Matthew Remski and how his work is changing the yoga landscape for the better. This conversation ends with a really practical discussion of trauma, consent, and ways in which teachers can make their classes more accessible and effective. Michael Stone: Meditation, Movement and Mental States

This was one of the first episodes of the Mindful Strength Podcast that has been re-edited because it has been an all-time favourite. Kathryn and Michael started working together in 2013. Shortly after, they co-created an online course called the New Wave of Yoga which created a bridge between postural yoga and strength training. In this episode they talk about what yoga and mindfulness practice are and how they feel, both sharing their own personal experiences. Michael talks about the changes he started to make in his practice, away from the ashtanga practice and into an individualized system that combined gym training, contemporary dance and mobility. He also talks about mental states, how he struggled with depression as a young person and how there are always a lot of feelings to be had. This episode was originally released just a couple of weeks after Michael passed away, and it's one of those recordings that feels timeless. Chris Kummer: Sensing, Moving and Feeling into Fascia

Kathryn and Chris have been friends for a few years and this episode was recorded during a visit last summer in Prince Edward County. In this conversation Chris explains his views on bodywork and how the tissues are connected from the superficial skin all the way down to microscopic cells. They talk about working with the body as opposed to fighting against the body and nervous system as a way to develop a more harmonious practice. Chris shares insights on how we can become more skilled at listening to what our tissues are telling us, and together they unpack topics like isolation training, fascial slings and human variation. Together they question whether too much emphasis is being placed on fascia and discuss some of the problems with how we have viewed the human body as a set of levers in the past. More than anything else this is a conversation between friends and colleagues, and it is a must listen for anyone wanting to challenge preconceived notions on the human body. Sean Lind is a strength and conditioning coach with a specialization in gymnastics. A former Competitive Gymnastics Coach and  Professional Circus Artist, in 2010 Sean became Crossfit coach & Athlete, who also has designations and experience in weight lifting practices. Sean's work and expertise are unique with high level achievements in various movement disciplines and has evolved his coaching to utilize the intersection of these practices to see success with his clients, ranging from competitive or performance athletes to general fitness enthusiasts. Sean is an incredible athlete and unique strength and conditioning coach whom we were excited to gain perspective from. This episode of the Mindful Strength Podcast digs into the cross section and interconnectedness of gymnastics, weightlifting and crossfit. We learn about Sean's journey through movement from Judo to gymnastics to circus to Crossfit. Kathryn and Sean talk a lot about the cross over and complementary nature of the various disciplines and the nature of multi-disciplinary work in general in supporting a well rounded practice whether training for competition or life. Sean truly works with the individual and develops programming based on the needs and experiences of each person as he sees them, assessing what is required to keep people out of repetitive strain scenarios. The pair get into specifics discussing isolation versus compound movements, approaches to mobility and flexibility, and more. Amber Karnes is a yoga teacher, social justice advocate, and the founder of Body Positive Yoga. Amber is a pioneer in the yoga community making noise for marginalized populations and people of all shapes, sizes, genders, races and abilities.  For Amber, yoga has been an integral part of a decade-long journey toward self-acceptance and body positivity – a journey of making peace with her body and helping others to do the same. Molly Boeder Harris is a yoga teacher and trauma recovery consultant based out of Portland, Oregon. Molly and Kathryn are both proponents of trauma based approaches to teaching and working with others in movement and beyond. Molly joins us for the second time on the Mindful Strength Podcast to discuss trauma, recovery, resiliency and how teachers and coaches might be able to better support people in their journey through life and movement. This recording got lost in our archives, and we were excited to revive it to share Molly's messages with you. This conversation is caters to yoga and fitness professional teaching or working with humans in body and mind. Molly shares some advice as to where you can start to become more informed on trauma and how it affects many aspects of being. Kathryn and Molly talk about rest and how in yoga, traditional forms of rest can leave people feeling anxious and vulnerable when not given agency around what this can be for them, offering tips and language to open this up to more variety and choice for the individual. They talk about adjustments and touch in classes, consent and intentionality, the importance of building rapport and relationships and how there is no one "right" approach to this sensitive topic. Sarah Court is a California based Doctor of Physical Therapy, the creator of  Quantum Leap and a long standing yoga teacher whose work is grounded in  anatomy and movement science with a focus on continuing eduction for movement teachers. Sarah is a wealth of body knowledge and we are excited that she took the time to chat with Kathryn on the Mindful Strength Podcast.   In this conversation we learn about Sarah's early influences in yoga from books to free community classes, to a deeper exploration of yoga through dedicated practice, teacher trainings and the experience of a positive embodied experience.   Sarah touches on her early days within the Jivamukti practice in NYC, finding the Yoga Tune Up® methodology, and how that  ultimately led to completing her Doctorate in Physical Therapy.  Much of this episode is  centred around the discussion and dissection of pain, its subjective nature and the brain's roll in dictating what pain actually is or feels like.  They dive into busting some myths specifically on lower back pain and "the core," and safety in movement.
