This week, Heather explores the somewhat controversial topic of functional breathing, explaining some of the chemistry and biomechanics of the breathing process. Inspired by the work of Kathryn Bruni Young, Heather encourages listeners to find sovereignty in breathing practices. She explores the possibility of reducing breath and invites practitioners to limit their use of breath as a cue in guided movement practices. She reminds listeners, nose breath all day every day! Heather suggests that if listeners or yoga teachers want to further explore the power of breath and functional breathing techniques, they can read the book Breath by James Nestor or check out Robin Rothenburg. We thank you for joining us this week and invite you to leave a review of the podcast on Apple Podcasts. “If we are only able to channel our minds when things are slow, calm, and relaxed then I'm not sure those practices are actually preparing us for what is going to happen in our lives.” Kathryn Bruni-Young is an expert on functional movement and building mindful strength. She is the founder of Mindful Strength, the host of the Mindful Strength Podcast, and an international yoga & movement teacher. Kathryn's work helps everyday people build strength and confidence from home with online classes and trainings. She also provides education for yoga teachers and clinicians who want to bring more strength to their classes and clients. She tells us about her journey to where she is today and how she is helping people build strength in a way so they can go out in the world and feel like a more capable and resilient human. The topics we touched on: How mindful strength training builds confidence. Why it is important to have a well rounded yoga practice. What does it mean to do something mindfully and how that term is often misunderstood. What is the important difference between having “a practice” vs. just working out. How the yoga community is adapting to be more inclusive, diverse and balanced in terms of what is being considered a valuable part of a well rounded class. Quotes “We serve people from age 25 to 75, it is a very diverse age group.” “A movement practice that is going to help them feel stronger but it it's not a fitness-y, aggressive, fast-paced feel.” “We have been misunderstanding what mindful even means...just like life, it is not always slow, gentle, calm and relaxed.” “[Most people] don't really understand how adaptive their bodies really are, and how strong and resilient they can actually become with some really good progressive training.” “A lot of the people I work with very hesitant to go to the gym, or go to fitness class or take up strength training because all they see is this this fitness version that only cares about how lean your are, or how heavy the weights are you can lift or what you look like and they don't see that it can work for them.” Thank you for listening! In this conversation Neil Pearson and Kathryn Bruni-Young talk about the dynamic and complex nature of pain. Neil begins by defining pain and talking about some misconceptions we have when it comes to pain. From there they talk about the purpose of pain and how we can learn to move and teach in a way that doesn't over catastrophize pain. Neil teaches us that pain and tissue damage are poorly correlated, except for when we have tissue damage in the skin, which really changes the way we experience pain. This conversation covers the basics that everyone should know about pain and how we can navigate our own experiences. In this episode Kyle Pichie interviews Kathryn on a few of the main questions that come up in workshops. They start by talking about strength training movements that can be done in the gym and on a yoga mat. Kathryn gives ideas of how anyone could begin their strength training practice and why it compliments yoga so well. From there they move into the topic of breathing and cueing the breath in classes. Kathryn shares her opinion and how she has come to the place of not cueing the breath during every movement. Finally they talk about dynamic movement and how practitioners and teachers can create more variability within the practice without changing too much. Interview With A Yogi - A Woke Yoga Podcast With Cora Geroux
On today’s episode I talk with Kathryn Bruni-Young. Kathryn grew up in her mom’s yoga studio in Toronto, she took her first teacher training when she was 17, and at 22 she started to notice aches and pains after her practice. In the years that followed Kathryn began to look outside the yoga world for answers to her physical symptoms, and along the way studied with Ido Portal, and began lifting weights seriously. In 2015 Kathryn won the Ontario Provincials in powerlifting. Since that time Kathryn has created all kinds of different resources for yogi’s who are curious about adding strength training to their movement practice, and is the host of the mindful strength podcast. In many ways ( apart from the powerlifting championship ) Kathryn and I share a very similar story, in that I started practicing as a teenager, in my early 20’s my body was in a lot of pain while I practiced, and strength training has completely turned my world around when it comes to feeling physically stable, strong, capable and young. So, if you’re a long term practitioner who is suffering from niggles, aches or pains or even injury I think you’re really going to love this episode with Kathryn. Or even if your brand new to yoga, Kathryn unpacks some really great info about how to progress in your practice in a, safe, intelligent and effective way.
