I'm thrilled to have movement teacher and educator Trina Altman on the podcast today. I've known Trina for years and have learned from her as both a student, a teacher and a coach. She is one of the most brilliant and gifted teachers I know. Right away we're diving into our mutual dislike of cooking and how we've found a way to work with that and create a happy, sustainable relationship with food. Then we follow it up with so much good conversation around:-How the way you grow up with food and how your family eats can have a major impact on how you use and connect with food as an adult. -Trina's candid discussion of her background with childhood sports and cheerleading and how that impacted her body image-What its like to teach Pilates and work in the fitness business and not focus on aesthetics. -Trina's own struggles around certain foods like chocolate and the progress she's made towards a more sustainable relationship with it-The key difference between strength training and Pilates and why it matters-How to figure out what kind of exercise is right for you when it seems like nothing fitsConnect with JordanaFind me on InstagramSign up for my Monday newsletter with lots of nutrition, exercise and mindset tipsCheck out my websiteConnect with TrinaInstagram Website

I probably don't have to introduce you to Trina Altman - she teaches regularly for Yoga International, pre-covid she traveled and taught workshops & trainings world wide, and now runs a successful online yoga & pilates education business. However, today's interview is a little bit different - Trina generously agreed to take us behind the scenes in her business, to answer the question “How Did You Do It?” I asked Trina big questions like what she was doing before she became a yoga teacher, where her revenue comes from and how she built up a community around her work. And Trina shares with candor, humor and a passion for her work. There are two things I'm really passionate about in my teaching: One is dismantling the notion of linear, hierarchical, universal progress, especially when it comes to movement. The other is teaching in a way that students feel 100% agency to make autonomous, empowered, educated decisions about their own movement practice. These two concepts come together really beautifully when we unpack regressions and progressions in movement because for every modification that could be considered a regression there is an example of the kind of body or situation in which that version is actually a progression and vice versa. For this reason, I am STOKED to have my friend Trina Altman back on the podcast to dive DEEP into these concepts. Trina Altman is the creator of Yoga Deconstructed® and Pilates Deconstructed®, which helps movement teachers foster an embodied understanding of their teaching and create a more sustainable practice through an interdisciplinary approach based on current movement science. Her work has been published in Yoga Journal, Yoga International and Pilates Style. Her book, Yoga Deconstructed®: Movement Science Principles For Teaching was published by Handspring Publishing in December 2020. Check out our previous conversations in Episode #3 (about her Yoga Deconstructed approach) and Episode #34 (all about a creative use of props in asana class). In this episode you'll hear: what the research shows about why yoga-related injuries are quite common the difference between internal and external cueing and when you might use one rather than the other the nine different factors to consider when regressing or progressing a movement various movement adaptations based on these nine factors and when they would likely be regression and when they are more likely to be a progression what yoga teachers listening can do to integrate these ideas into their teaching Learn More From Trina: on her website buy her book! on Instagram
You might feel like we are in a time of winter, maybe the winter of your life. It might feel dark and full of despair, but the pain you might be feeling now can ignite an incredible transformation if you choose to use it as fuel for your transformation. For this episode, I sat down with Julie Martin. Julie has been teaching yoga for 25 years, including 10 in Goa, India. She teaches how to break free from linear yoga and outdated dogma and invites students into a practice that embraces their individuality and curiosity. She just published a book called the transformation journey and today we sat down to talk about yoga and mindfulness practices that help us through stages of personal empowerment and transformation.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAY FROM THIS EPISODE1- Transformation is an ongoing process. You can't move into growth until you take stock of where/who you are now. Then, you need to practice acceptance and get in touch with what you want instead of not want. Define it and refine it. When you don't know what you want, you are at the mercy of random chaos. Transformation is about focusing our energy. And we can't direct our energy towards what we want if we focus on what we don't want.2- Deep down, we don't usually want to change who we are, so much as changing how we feel about who we are. If we don't come from a place of need to change but focus on our sensations, we can be open to the possibility for growth and realize we're already ok.3- Our brain is wired for repetition. The limbic system is organized by our ancestral beliefs and the way we were brought up. They create a loop in our thoughts and it takes focused energy to break out of its momentum.4- To create real change, we have to take knowledge and turn it into experience, into energy and this is where the yoga practice comes in. This is why yoga is not about shapes, but feeling and sensing.5- How would you act if you already had/felt what you want to have/feel? Find the things that make you feel like the person you want to be and start to act how that person would act.QUESTIONS SHE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODEWhat do you think about the times we are going through collectively right now? What are the pillars of transformation? What is it? How does it work? What are the role of the mind and our beliefs in transformation? How can we can directly affect our energy for it to be supportive to transformation? Why do we get stuck in our old habits even when we know they don’t serve us?How do we transform without coming from judgment or resentment or stories of not-enoughness?GIVEAWAY!I have an extra special something for you today! Imagine if you could heal any virus in your body? And on top of it, you didn’t really have to do anything. Too good to be true? This episode is for you.Today I sat down with Tom Paladino. Tom is a researcher seeking to make a difference in the world by providing people with the education and tools to restore optimal health, and by helping enhance their quality of life. Tom began research with Scalar Energy during his undergraduate years following in the footsteps of Nikola Tesla. He was also able to study the work of Hieronymus’ which included unbinding the DNA bonds of microbes. Today we sat down to talk about how he’s using Scalar energy and developed instruments to heal people.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAY FROM THIS EPISODE1- Scalar Energy is the first energy of the universe, the primal energy of the sun and the stars. When you can tap into that fundamental energy, you can have fundamental control over nature.2- Scalar Energy allows you to create a molecule or break apart a molecule, assemble a vitamin or disassemble a virus. Scalar Energy allows you to have control over the molecular forms and when you can do that, you can control human health.3- This happens by way of photographs. The photograph serves as an energetic bridge to the person. It's put in an instrument that sends the necessary energy to your field to act in a certain way. It's a tool that allows us to control nature. It happens at the quantum level. It affects our nonphysical constitution.4- People can expect to experience a clearing of their sinuses, a clearing of bacterial plaque on their teeth, lesser symptoms of arthritis, better mobility, less inflammation, chakra balancing, deeper sleep, enhanced dream states, sense of peace and tranquility.5- Sign up for a free session and see how it feels. You don't have to do anything but send a photo of yourself.QUESTIONS HE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODEWhat is scalar light or scalar energy? How does the technology work? How do you control if it will create a molecule or break down a virus? In practice, what can we do with it?Does it work with all viruses? Are we affecting the DNA strands? Can we use scalar energy to change human DNAs and cure genetic diseases? What's missing for this to be accepted in western medicine?Let’s come back to the fact that you are using a photo to do that. How does that work, what does the instrument do exactly? How does it work? What are the steps people have to do?What are some of the effects people can experience? What can they look for?On your website you have different program offers ranging from addiction, fat metabolism to hormones, do you use a different instrument, a different technique, what changes the result?Have you tried with the covid's virus? What do you answer to “it’s too good to be true” kinda skeptic’s comment? How do you suggest people go about this to get the most out of it?What's coming next?GIVEAWAY!I have an extra special something for you today! Scalar energy is the fundamental life force found everywhere in the world, space and universe. It originates from the sun and stars. Chi, prana, OM, mana, life force, pyramid energy or zero-point energy are synonymous terms for scalar energy. He theorized that all energy in the universe initiates as scalar energy; and that the sun of our solar system and the stars of the universe are the points of origin, “the storehouses,” for scalar energy. He further theorized that scalar energy is instructive energy, as the entire universe is instructed by this Divine Essence. Subsequently, all spiritual, cognitive, emotional and physical action in the universe is initiated and maintained by scalar energy instructions. Scalar energy provides order in the universe. I've always considered myself an asana-based teacher. And, for the most part, I just “get it” when it comes to postural alignment. As a vinyasa junkie, I am always looking for new ways to apply modern movement science to the way I teach classes and lead my yoga teacher trainings. My teaching completely changed a few years back thanks to the lovely human behind Yoga Deconstructed®. In todays episode, Trina Altman, creator of Yoga Deconstructed® and Pilates Deconstructed® explains what may be missing in the yoga scene today. She elaborates on how cross training and a multi-faceted approach to movement may decrease your risk for injury and why improving your proprioception and your interoception is so vital for both body and brain. Here are some Highlights: Learn why yoga postures may aggravate rather than help some bodies. Discover how forcing your body into the perfect posture in yoga can result in an injury. For this episode I sat down with Trina Altman.Trina is the creator of the programs Yoga Deconstructed® and Pilates Deconstructed®, which we’ll talk about today. On top of her public, privates and online classes and courses, Trina has presented at Kripalu, the Yoga Alliance Leadership Conference and Yogaworks, among others. She also created and taught a Pilates continuing-education course for physical therapists and was part of the faculty for the Brain Longevity conference at UCLA.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKE-AWAY FROM THIS EPISODE:1- Body weight activities, repetition, and low variability adds more risks for injury. Play with load, range of motion, direction of movement, plane of movement, open chain/close chain, orientation to gravity, intensity, tempo, etc.2- There's huge value in one-on-one lessons. You can learn faster and get an individualized, customized, personalized approach to your movement. Progression is faster, there's more possibility for leaning and it's easier to avoid injuries.3- Pain is a bio-psycho-social event. The correlation between damaged tissue and pain is low. Everybody have a difference pain tolerance. For the same sensation, one person will identify it as pain the other as pleasure. It's really complicated.4-Cross training is key to continue a yoga practice for a long time without sacrificing what you love by having to stop due to an injury. Think about adding external load, cardiovascular training, balance and agility, motor development, coordination, flexibility, jumping skills, and more.5-Before you take a group class, you should know what you can do, what you can't do, what you should and what you shouldn't do. And know that those 4 things will change throughout your life and from day to day. The only way to know those 4 things is to work one on one with a teacher. That way, in a group class, you don't need the teacher for modifications, you know how to take care of your body.QUESTIONS SHE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE :You created Yoga deconstructed and Pilates deconstructed, can you explain what those are? And why you created them? What is somatic movement? What problem did you try to address with creating yoga deconstructed? What in yoga/pilates was putting you at risk for injuries? How can we bring more variability in our movement practice? What is the goal? What can we do, inside our scope of practice, to help prevent injuries? If we do have pain during yoga or everyday life activity, where do we start? What do we look at first? What are the different clues we can be aware of?I know some listeners probably love the flexibility aspect of yoga and don’t naturally feel drawn to strength or stability work. How can they continue to improve their flexibility, focus on their flexibility without sacrificing their stability? One thing you teach a lot and I also love to teach is regressions/progressions, can you explain how those are useful? And give an example? How can student learn what modification is best suited for them? How can a teacher look at the yoga cues they use all the time and evaluate the use/effect of what they are trying to do?If there's no right way to do things, is there a wrong way?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!DONATE OR BECOME AN EXCLUSIVE MEMBER TODAY.Thank you so much for listening and being part of our 56th episode! WELCOME to Conversations for Yoga Teachers! I’m your host, Karen Fabian and this is EPISODE 29! One of the things I love about hosting my podcast is I get to interview really interesting and innovative teachers and today is no exception. I was introduced to Trina Altman through her thoughtful posts on social media. While they were focused on anatomy, which is my focus of teaching as well, they presented yoga in a new and different way. Trina, to me, is someone who is not willing to just “go with the flow” and do what everyone else is doing. And while you might think it’s about “being different just to try to be popular” nothing could be further from the truth. Her keen eye towards the practice, backed by her knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics, allows her to question “the way things have been presented” and give it a fresh new approach, all with the overall goal of helping as many students as possible access the practice as well as teachers and helping them learn new ways to present it and the WHY’s behind these different approaches (so important!!) Trina’s background is as follows: She received her training through STOTT Pilates® and is an E-RYT 500. She has created two programs: Yoga Deconstructed® and Pilates Deconstructed® to show teachers how to take an interdisciplinary approach to foster an embodied understanding of yoga and Pilates in relation to modern movement science. You can find out more about her here on her website, www.trinaaltman.com Get ready for a great conversation and carve out some time because this one runs a bit longer and is full of interesting conversation!
Tribe, this week I am joined by the amazing Trina Altman. She has reshaped how I teach. Being such a fan of hers, I couldn’t wait to jump into this and talk to her about her course Yoga Deconstructed.Coming from the fashion industry and seeing designers who deconstructed fashion, by putting stitches on the outside of the pants, she wanted to understand how that could translate into the body. Not only with yoga, but Pilates as well.Developing courses, that are structured around the critical thinking skills, deeper anatomy of the body, and understanding the individual goals of the students rather than the standard vinyasa classes. We dive into what deconstruction is in yoga, Pilates as well as physical therapy. How interdisciplinary training and teachings come into play for all. Being a nurse, Miranda was apprehensive when she first heard of detox growing in popularity. After having gone through YogiDetox herself, however, Miranda has seen first-hand the massive benefits detoxing has had on her health. Gale and Miranda chat about the transformational experience that this program has brought to so many people. Often in our busy modern lives, it can be really great for us to take a step back from things that aren’t serving us. Detoxing allows us to remove ourselves from our everyday lifestyles, so we can more easily cut out foods that we don’t realize are negatively impacting us. Additionally, it encourages stricter adherence to practices and habits that serve us well, such as going to bed early. Cate Stillman has designed YogiDetox so that you have the power to design your own detox and do it how you want. Miranda emphasizes how it is less about increasing stress through strict adherence to guidelines, and more about doing the things that you know serve your health best. Detoxing allows us to get back into alignment and balance with ourselves, and YogiDetox provides the support we need to get there. What you’ll get out of tuning in: Why detoxing can be so transformative Why you should do YogiDetox What eliminating certain foods can tell us Links Mentioned in Episode: YogiDetox Fall Intermittent Fasting, Detoxing And The Ayurvedic Clock The Detox Path of Deep Nourishment with Deanna Minich Show Highlights: 3:38 - Miranda discusses with Gale how YogiDetox is designed for participants to design their detox to fit what they need at any given time in their lives. While Miranda detoxed more on her own, she underscores the value of the Facebook community for answering questions, providing support, and showing how others are handling the detox journey. 11:45 - Miranda emphasizes looking at our local environment, including local plants that grow, to see how we can utilize these resources to feed our health. Invasive weeds can serve as abundant sources of local nutrients that connect us with what our environment is providing for us. Favorite Quotes: “Reexamining things to do little experiments on yourself to see how you feel when those things are taken out of your life - I think it's very valuable.” - Miranda “It is very valuable that we start looking at what’s around us and how it’s supposed to be helping us.” - Miranda “How are we feeding ourselves in other ways?” - Gale Edison Guest BIO: Miranda Smith is a 48 year old registered nurse, who lives in Northwestern, B.C., Canada. Welcome back, everyone! Today, I am excited to bring to you the wisdom, experience, and enthusiasm of my friend Trina Altman. Trina is a certified Yoga and Pilates instructor who is passionate about varied movement. Rather than rigidly adhering to one school of movement, Trina was unable to unlock the potential of her own body by combining the tenets of both Yoga and Pilates, and she brings an embodied and wise awareness to movement of all kinds. She has taken her years of experience and transformed them into online courses that you can take at home, called Yoga Deconstructed and Pilates Deconstructed. As we chat this week, Trina and I will discuss her journey to finding a mode of movement that worked for her body, and how she turned that into a teaching practice for private clients and group classes. Trina will also explain the types of movement that she tries to incorporate into her classes, and why static poses are not your friend! I think her perspective is great for teachers who feel a little confined by one type of yoga, and are ready to explore the wide world of varied movement. You'll leave with more than a little bit of wisdom, I assure you! More from this info-packed episode: Trina shares the studio and the teachers that shaped her own teaching practice. From Yoga to Pilates—how Trina decided to pursue her second certification. Varied movement and mindful movement classes that Trina really enjoys. Breaking down the little pieces of movement to teach the skills we need to move better. Common pitfalls to combat as a teacher. Diving into sensory feedback methods. A breakdown of movement deconstruction. Ways that you can experience a class with Trina, even if you aren't in L.A. Resources:Follow Trina on Social Media—you won't be disappointed! A FULL HOUSE this episode, as Deborah, James, and I all talk to Trina Altman about her past in fashion and finance and her current path as a dynamic movement teacher who refuses (kindly) to be stuck in a tribe-mentality.
