The pressure was on again for Hull City on Wednesday night against relegation rivals Oxford United, and after going a goal down, it looked like the Tigers' wretched home form would be their undoing again, but two goals in three minutes turned the game in their favour to beat Gary Rowett's men 2-1. The only negative on the night was Gustavo Puerta's red card in the 97th minute for a second yellow card. In today's episode, Baz and Kathyrn were joined by Oxford United fan, broadcaster and co-host of Not The Top 20 podcast George Elek to reflect on a seismic win for Ruben Selles' side. Now the Chief Market Strategist at StoneX, Kathryn Rooney Vera comes from humble beginnings. As a teenager she cleaned houses in order to contribute to her family's finances. In college, she changed her major to finance from liberal arts, seeing a more direct path to a well-compensated career. She would ultimately settle into the study of economics, a craft she continues to refine today in support of colleagues and clients at StoneX.Our discussion surveys the process Kathyrn uses to find value in markets. She focuses on forecasting growth and inflation, the Fed's response to these variables and the construction of trades that will capitalize on them. We review some of the recent cross-asset volatility and the role that positioning played. Kathryn rightly suggested that clients utilize protective option strategies in the period prior to August 5th.She has also seen value in curve steepeners, embedding a little bit of the Sahm Rule notion that the Fed may find itself behind the curve. Lastly, she sees a favorable setup in the utilities sector, providing both the traditional defensive property through its linkage to rates as well as embedding an AI play that can empower it should the boom continue.I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Kathryn Rooney Vera.

As an astute observer of two distinct cultures, she has published five works of fiction, some of which have been taught at universities in multicultural literature, women's studies and Arab studies departments. Kathryn worked as a journalist and features writer for an English weekly newspaper in Bahrain before devoting her time to writing fiction. Her published works include a collection of short stories, Fields of Fig and Olive: Ameera and Other Stories of the Middle East, and four novels, Tower of Dreams, Ghost Songs, Sands of Zulaika and A Marriage in Four Seasons. She won the Mary Roberts Rinehart award for short fiction, and her novel, Sands of Zulaika was a finalist for the Ariadne Prize. Universities where she has lectured include Georgetown University, Mary Washington University, University of Virginia, Sarah Lawrence University, Tufts University, New York University, Grand Rapids Community College, University of Southern Maryland and St. Mary's College, Maryland. Kathyrn released in September a new memoir that reflects on love, loss, renewal and overcoming devastating early trauma through music, dancing and the devotion of the strong American and Arab women in her life, called Dancing Into the Light: An Arab-American Girlhood in the Middle East. Kathryn's new book weaves together stories about her bicultural upbringing with an American mother and a Muslim father from Jerusalem (Her family moved from Washington, D.C., to the Middle East when she was very young). Set against the backdrop of the early American presence in Iran under the Shah, and the burgeoning years of Kuwait's early oil boom, Dancing into the Light is Kathryn's memoir of a life disrupted by tragedy. But instead of derailing her life, her mother's death opened the door to deeper love and support from other places within her family. Kathryn discusses: Growing up immersed in disparate cultures, navigating cultural mores and values of two very different societies How people of diametrically different cultures and faiths can coexist in harmony when there is tolerance and respect for the other Dispelling stereotypes of Arab women and misconceptions about Middle Eastern cultures Life as a bicultural person in the Middle East – Kathryn's mother was a Southern woman from Tennessee and her father was a Muslim from Jerusalem How she has seen Kuwait, Jerusalem and other parts of the Middle East change politically, socially and historically over her lifetime Experiences with grief at an early age, and how she found solace following the deaths of her mother and younger brother Overcoming devastating early trauma through music and dancing Ms. Magazine said of Kathryn's work: “Her politics are feminist, her theme is human ethics, and her writing is finely honed.” She has three children and resides with her husband in McLean, Virginia. She loves to dance and teaches and performs Argentine tango in the Washington, DC area. Three partners and the Chief Executive have now left the "Big Four" accounting firm. Public Service Commission data here shows the public service organisations spent $1.2 billion on contractors and consultants for the 2021/22 year - 32% more than the previous year. Kathryn Burmeister : Addiction to the Status Quo

Life Passion and Business

Our show is about addiction, not to drugs but addiction to work and maintaining the status quo. There are times when hard work is required, but society and corporate culture have created the hustle and grind, a badge to be worn with honour. My guest on the show is Kathryn Burmeister, a recovering Attorney.      Her desire to work in the law started in middle school. Kathryn was inspired by the books “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” by Martin Luther King Jr and  “ To kill a Mocking Bird” by Harper Lee. Influential books that explore the law and the legal system. They planted the seed and set Kathryn on her life path of becoming an attorney.    During high school, she found work in various law firms to experience different types of practice before going off to study law school. After passing the bar exam, she got her license and went on to practice in her dream job at a personal injury law firm, working for people looking for compensation.  It was a well-established firm; the managing partner had over 30 years of experience. He employed Kathyrn and a small team of attornies and paralegals.    For over a year, it was the dream job she had hoped for until that 2am when that text arrived. It changed everything. The senior partner could no longer hide his deception and took his own life. He had been stealing the client's money for years and the hole had become too big to cover. He chose to leave rather than face prison. Kathryn, a fellow partner, and a paralegal decided to continue the business and find compensation for the clients her senior partner had so badly let down.   That was the start of her Addiction to the Status Quo, she and her team took on over 70 cases. It became a mission, and they worked every hour they could. Living on adrenaline, she was the emotional support to her clients and the team. It became an addiction with a price because Kathryn spent every moment thinking about this situation, and it was too much. During high school and again in law school, Kathryn experienced anxiety and depression. The exhaustion and overwork brought these feelings back to the surface, and now she was considering her own suicide. It had to stop.  Our conversation is about her journey to recovery. It is about the status quo, the expectation from corporate culture and society that drives people into long hours and the building of unhealthy lives.    It is the recognition that there must be a balance between intense work and life, less it becomes an addiction or worse. It requires boundaries to be set and maintained. The experience led Kathyrn to write the book, “Overcoming Addiction to the Status Quo”.  On the show, you can hear that she is passionate about mental health and self-improvement. Today she is a regular speaker at events on self-care, business, and law.    She is also “The happiness lawyer”, supporting others in the legal profession to find their work-life balance.     Further details about this podcast along with my Guest's website and social links are all available at: https://www.lifepassionandbusiness.com/kathryn-burmeister-addiction-to-the-status-quo     Life Passion & Business is dedicated to exploring what it takes to be Extraordinary, to face challenges and rejoice in the opportunities they bring, and expand our vision into new ways of thinking and living. As I wrote a few months ago, with regard to true crime books, "All stories are worth telling well, but especially the difficult ones, when we need the writer's assurance as we walk down the dark passage."As someone who occasionally takes on such stories, I'm interested in how and why other true crime writers approach the work. My lead-off interview is with Kathryn Miles, author of "TRAILED: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders," about the horrific unsolved 1996 murders of two young women with Shenandoah National Park.Miles does what the best true crime writers do. She takes on the awesome responsibility of explaining murder, with compassion and clear-eyes and deeply empathetic reporting. As she writes in TRAILED, "Maybe, just maybe, when two selfless, joyful, beautiful humans die in a place, what's left behind is not the agony of their deaths, but the brilliance of their lives."Miles is the author of Superstorm: Nine Days Inside Hurricane Sandy and Quakeland: On the Road to America's Next Devastating Earthquake, among other books. Kathryn Poole is an artist from Liverpool in the United Kingdom. I had the opportunity to speak with Kathryn after she was announced as the winner of the Jackson's Art Emerging Artist Prize in Drawing. And I'm so glad that I did. Kathryn creates exquisite and highly detailed drawings that result from her fascinating process; a combination of the scientific method, an interest in memory, and roadkill. The subject matter may be sombre, but Kathryn's approach is delightfully inquisitive and cheerful. Some of the topics we cover in this conversation include: How she warms up before beginning work and maintains focus for sustained periods of time Managing time to create alongside a demanding day job The difference between using roadkill versus taxidermy as source material The virtues of working in black and white Her thoughts on entering art competitions and Kathryn's creative challenge for you to try in your own practice.
