Culling does work and it certainly has a place for deer managers and hunters but it may not be what you're thinking. This isn't culling like our grandfathers once did. This week I'm launching a new series on various Quality Deer Management topics. The goal is to shed light on the principles & practices. QDM can be implemented on small and large tracts. Thanks for listening!

On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is joined by good friend and experienced deer hunter Tim Himmelberger. Tim was a self taught bowhunter fueled by the same passion as many of us - chasing big bucks. Tim started out from humble beginnings, and worked his tail off to purchase some properties with a good friend. This began a new journey - how do you hold the best bucks in the neighborhood? At the time of Tim's journey, Quality Deer Management and the plethora of land management advice we have today was nearly non-existent. Everything was learned via trial and error and the school of hard knocks. Many lessons were learned the hard way, but ultimately they were able to put down some of the best bucks in the neighborhood at a time no one else was doing with regularity. This conversation is merely a snapshot of a lifetime whitetail phanatic. You'll pick up some excellent tricks and tactics for hunting bucks during the rut, near bedding, and using things like spot lighting for inventory in the neighborhood. AB3, Host of The Bryant Land Country Podcast, talks with Corey Bryant (no relation to AB3) President of the Buckwild Hunting Club in Sparta, Georgia. Corey talks about the growth of the Buckwild Hunting Club, an all-black hunting club that has expanded from 50 acres in Buckhead, Georgia to just under 2400 acres in Sparta, Georgia. Episode Highlights: Corey Bryant talks about how the Buckwild Hunting Club started and expanded. What issues has the hunting club faced? Who taught Corey about hunting? What is the Quality Deer Management like in Sparta, Georgia? What does the club's membership look like these days? What is the size of the primary area of the Buckwild Hunting Club and do they divide up the area for members? What is Corey Bryant's hunting style? Corey Bryant shares a personal story about a ground blind experience. What types of bows does Corey use for hunting and competing? What is easier for hunting, Georgia or in the MidWest? Doe the Buckwild Hunting Club keep track of hunting records? In 2008, Corey Bryant's father passed away and it had a strong impact on the club. There is a rich history of black hunting clubs. 3 Key Points: Corey Bryant's father started the Buckwild Hunting Club 37 years ago with four other gentlemen. You are out there hunting for fun. The deer is out there for their life. The Buckwild Hunting Club gives out a trophy for the biggest buck killed on opening day and a trophy for the biggest buck killed all year. Tweetable Quotes: “You have to know natural foods. You have to know what the deer are doing at certain times of days. You have to know what they are eating at certain times of years. You have to know what sign to look for.” – Corey Bryant “We are 30 members strong and we have just a little under 2400 acres.” – Corey Bryant “For hunting I'm shooting a Mathews Halon 5. And for tournaments I got a Mathews TRX 38.” – Corey Bryant Resources Mentioned: The Bryant Land Country Podcast: bryantlandcountry.com Follow Bryant Land on social media: Linkedin | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube Buckwild Hunting Club: Facebook

Pro-Tracker – Pro-Tracker® is a bowhunting radio frequency tracking system. The carrier screws onto your arrow shaft and the transmitter sits in the carrier. When the arrow connects with the target, the transmitter detaches itself from the carrier and attaches itself to the animal’s hide. This allows the arrow to pass all the way through the animal for ethical shots. The transmitter then emits a specific radio frequency which can be picked up from up to two miles away. The Pro-tracker® Receiver then tracks that radio frequency and allows you to track how close you are to the transmitter for the recovery of all wounded game The Habitat Podcast – The Habitat Podcast is a podcast for land and wildlife habitat managers and for hunters who learn and utilize different types of habitat in their hunting strategy. We interview hunters and habitat managers from across the country, picking their brain to learn their successes and failures. We are different in the fact that we are not the experts. This podcast is for us, and the listeners to learn a thing or two from the experts we analyze. QDMA – To produce better deer, hunters need reliable information. This information generally comes from research. QDMA helps design, coordinate, and fund practical research projects that increase hunter knowledge. Since 2005, QDMA has contributed more than $500,000 to support important research projects in over twenty states. Education Since its earliest days, QDMA has been a recognized leader in educating hunters and the general public on all aspects of whitetail biology, management, and habitat improvement. However, the types of information desired by these groups as well as the tools available to deliver this information constantly change, and QDMA is keeping pace. QDMA continues with existing educational activities such as seminars, field days, and Quality Whitetails magazine, but delivery methods also include television, DVDs, and w-based opportunities. QDMA’s educational materials include printed books, electronic books, classroom curriculums, posters, DVDs, apps, online courses, internships, and more. Advocacy Each year there are countless threats to the future of deer hunting and management at the local, state, and national levels. Due to QDMA’s growth and strong support from the professional wildlife community, it is considered the most respected and influential whitetail organization in North America. As a result, QDMA serves as the leading advocate for the wise management of deer and the protection of our deer-hunting heritage. QDMA also maintains strong ties with its members, other conservation organizations, state and federal agencies, and other groups with an interest in deer hunting. Since 2006, QDMA has engaged on nearly 800 state, federal, and provincial management and policy issues impacting wildlife, habitat, and our hunting heritage. Certification The Deer Steward program is QDMA’s personal educational experience designed to offer hunters and wildlife professionals an opportunity to gain advanced knowledge of Quality Deer Management directly from the nation’s top experts. Both online and in-person courses allow deer hunters to become experts in a number of areas, from deer biology to habitat management. In addition, QDMA’s Land Certification Program (LCP) is a multi-level, voluntary process that evaluates and certifies one or more properties against an established list of QDM standards. Hunting Heritage Hunting is an essential tool for sound deer management and part of our sporting heritage. However, in many states hunter numbers have declined, and existing hunter recruitment programs are proving only marginally effective. In response, QDMA has developed innovative youth and new hunter recruitment programs.

Corey Slater tells us that since 1988, QDMA has worked to promote sustainable, high-quality deer populations, wildlife habitats and ethical hunting experiences through research, education, advocacy, and hunter recruitment. QDMA teaches deer hunters how to improve local deer populations, habitat and hunting experiences. To enhance the fun and excitement of deer hunting, Quality Deer Management […]

Tradgeeks Podcast - Traditional Archery Podcast and Bowhunting
"It was in Connecticut where I grew up that my love of wildlife and hunting really developed. It was snapping turtles, leopard frogs and garter snakes that instilled my passion for exploration and biology; I couldn’t get enough books about them or all the other animals of the world, however, it was my father’s stories of hunting northern Maine and his collection of Jack O’Connor books that inspired me most. Those stories of mountain hunts, grizzly bears, pack trains, hunters taping out their dall sheep horns by lantern; it was all I ever wanted to do. During college, I continued to follow my passion and studied Wildlife Biology where I received an opportunity to study Bengal tigers in both Bangladesh and Nepal. I found the travel, the element of danger and the exposure to new cultures and wildlife intoxicating. I then went on to work for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Alaska collecting genetic and age class samples of Pacific salmon. I spent long summers living in a 1 person-backpacking tent through all the Alaska weather and wildlife; I lived for it! These adventures inspired me as a hunter and fisherman to explore the world. Today I’m driven by my own adventures if for no other reason then to find my own great stories. This is my adventure. " – Donnie Vincent

Fred Eichler is a man of personal achievement. His passion for bowhunting has taken him all over the world in pursuit of his next adventure. Fred truly believes that any animal with a bow is a trophy. His personal quest to complete the North American Super Slam with a recurve bow reflects that state of mind. In mid August of 2009 Fred harvested a cow Tule Elk to become the first to take all 29 North American big game animals with a recurve bow and complete the Super Slam. Fred has been fortunate enough to share his love and enthusiasm of the sport with fellow bowhunters across the country through his television shows and personal appearances. If you ever run across Fred in the woods or at your local bow shop you’ll be greeted with a big smile and friendly handshake. Bowhunting is more than a passion for him, it’s a way of life.
