In my world as an outdoor writer I have the ability to preview a lot of new products, and to see some of the new innovations that are on the horizon. I am constantly amazed at how people create ways to make a hole. The Archery Trade Association annual show is one place where you will witness dozens of new broadhead designs every year. It seems that there is always someone who thinks they can create a better broadhead. One that flies better, cutted better, and tunes easier. I've seen broadheads that were diminituve in size barely bigger than the arrow itself, and some that looked like a hubcap flying through the air. And every one of these folks believed theirs was the best ever designed. Today, we have on the show the founders of a new broadhead company, TouLou broadheads has designed a single bevel broadhead with a twist...literally, and the design allows the arrow to fly straight and flatter due to the tip driving the rotation of the arrow verses the feathers. More than this, Trevor and Jake share their stories of faith and personal transformation that is surre to inspire you. www.touloubroadheads.com www.taurususa.com www.cva.com www.birddogcoffeebeans.com www.himtnjerky.com www.citrusafe.com www.elimishieldhunt.com www.nukemhunting.com www.christianoutdoors.org

Dan Forster VP and Chief Conservation Officer for the Archery Trade Association stops by to discuss a report "State-by-State Hunting Data, 3.7 Million Bowhunters in America" "The ATA worked to determine an accurate number of licensed bowhunting participants in America and is happy to report the nation had 3.7 million bowhunters in the 2021-22 season. This is the first time ATA or any other entity has gathered a complete set of state bowhunter estimates. As a benefit to ATA members, the ATA put the data set into an easy to read, single-page spreadsheet available here." Give it a listen, the data driven conversation is way more interesting than I thought it would be, Dan was a great guest! The straw that broke the camel's back for me was a video from the Archery Trade Association show this past winter announcing a new livestream-enabled cell camera. The excited brand representative laid out a scenario in which a hunter gets a text message on their phone with a photo of a big buck stepping in front of their camera. From here, he exclaimed, the hunter could pull up the camera app and hit the “Live” button. Now this hunter could watch...
Emily Porter from the Mo. Dept. of Conservation to discuss the increase of women hunting (in honor of International Women's Month).Female hunters have been increasing during the past 15 years at least, according to various data sets from conservation organizations. The state is seeing women in hunting grow younger and more prevalent. While 78,000 Missouri women have firearm hunting permits, most of the increases appear to be in bow hunting.Female bow hunters increased by nearly 40 percent between 2005-2014, according to a report on the state's recruitment, retention and reactivation plan by the Archery Trade Association. The same report indicated a 5 percent decrease in this demographic's age.
Welcome to 2nd Amendment Radio & the Great Outdoors with Marc Cox & Bo Matthews – as always we are produced by Carl Middleman (Pew Pew)! We begin by thanking everyone who came out to Bo's Big Dawg Poker Bash last weekend. Then Mo. Sen. Nick Schroer tells us what is going on with SAPA after a federal judge struck it down. The Second Amendment Preservation Act passed in 2021, & made it illegal for police to enforce federal gun laws that are not included in state statutes. It also allows people to sue police departments for up to $50,000 if they feel like an officer is violating their 2nd Amendment rights. U.S. District Judge, Brian Wimes, ruled the legislation violates the U.S. Constitution's supremacy over local laws & called it, “unconstitutional in its entirety.” Finally, Emily Porter from the Mo. Dept. of Conservation to discuss the increase of women hunting (in honor of International Women's Month).Female hunters have been increasing over the past 15 years at least, according to various data sets from conservation organizations. Who better to give a history lesson on the progression of archery hunting than the man with more than 50 years of experience behind a bow and who was the leader of the Archery Trade Association for 17 years? Jay McAninch, now retired and emeritus member of the National Deer Association Board of Directors joins Nick and “The Doctor” to talk about his early years as an archery hunter in the mid 60's and how what he carries to the woods now barely resembles what he was using when he arrowed his first deer at age 16. You won't want to miss his answer to the question, “What about archery hunting has never changed even though so much has changed over the last 50 years?” Despite being retired, Jay remains active in the outdoors industry and is often called upon by conservation organizations for his expertise in non-profit organization management and conservation policy. Our first episode was recorded on a bittersweet day. It was a day that the IBH team was suppose to arrive at ATA 2021 (Archery Trade Association). Hosts Tim Jarvis and Mike Edgin give an update on their hunting season. Our weather this season was warmer than normal. We get into deer senses, how their vision differs from ours, their movement patterns and the misconceptions surrounding their movement in the morning and evening. We even use a couple of big words. Don't let it fool you, we are still full of s***. illinoisbowhunter.com
Does it feel different shooting a whitetail deer versus a squirrel? Everyone has a different take on that… and it’s different for every hunter. This week Artemis is joined by Sam Seaton of the Archery Trade Association. We talk about new hunter recruitment, your headspace in the field… AND some archery-themed topics, like what pop culture means for bowhunting interest (Katniss Everdeen, ya’ll) -- and, something you’ve maybe never heard of…. BOWFISHING. 2:00 Blanket forts: So… “hibernatory?” #yeswecan 7:00 Becca’s first hunt: A gray squirrel in Kentucky… Am I a hillbilly? Or is this kind of fun? 7:30 Battered and fried squirrel, mmmm 8:30 Western pine squirrels are a little small to bother with… but those urban squirrels in your backyard? Huuuge 9:00 “Tell us about yourself” -- why is it always so hard to distill yourself into a couple of sentences!? 10:00 For adult-onset hunters, it’s so interesting to revisit your pre-hunting headspace -- the why-would-anyone-shoot-Bambi? Mindset 15:00 The emotional warm-up to pulling the trigger that first time. Is it easier with a squirrel, than, say, a whitetail deer? Is it easier on the fourth day of a hunt versus the first? 18:00 On not taking the shot when you have it because your headgame/confidence quotient isn’t in the right space to take an animal’s life. 19:00 Do we sometimes take shots that we KNOW will miss to avoid this inner conflict? 20:00 ‘Thank you for not pressuring me’ - not every successful hunt results in a kill, especially with new hunters 22:00 Person-to-person mentored hunts: Priceless 24:00 Archery Trade Association: Supports the bowhunting and archery industry. 26:30 Field to fork, or hook-to-cook events - SO MUCH FUN - and a great way to reach new hunters 29:00 “The Hunger Games” books/movies spurred a lot of interest in archery, especially in young women. Don’t we all have an inner Katniss Everdeen? 30:00 National Archery in the Schools Program - huge force in getting new people into the sport 31:00 The Avengers movie (character: Hawkeye) and The Walking Dead are other media hits that boosted the public’s perception of archery as something totally badass 32:00 Katniss Everdeen: Just seeing her wield a bow… does it plant some kind of seed in girls and women? Like, “Hmm… maybe I could do that…?” The more we see people like us doing something, the more it seems real 33:00 But Katniss isn’t enough. You need access to a PLACE you can shoot a bow, you need access to EXPERTISE (even if it’s YouTube), and you need COMMUNITY, which is different where you go 36:30 Bowhunters United - a consumer-facing group for bowhunters to advocate for the sport in general, from recruitment to conservation (aaaand discounts! Plus a coffee mug) 39:00 Bowfishing = you shoot fish with a bow and arrow. No, really. It’s a thing! Totally different arrows. They have a string on them... the idea is to hit a fish and reel it back in. 43:00 Bowfishing at night with a spotlight helps you see them better. Regulations are different state-to-state -- in Idaho, for example, bowfishing regs are specific to invasive fish species like carp 47:00 We’re not sure, but there MIGHT be a guided fishing trip opportunity for bowhunting Asian carp… there are already carp-only tournaments. Maybe a work party, even? Anyone? 53:00 Hunting season is upon us! It’s a special, magical time of year -- and we can’t wait to hear more from you. AB3 also talks about a viral hunting-related video with a 7-year-old, shed hunting, and popular trade shows that take place during the trade show season. Episode Highlights: Could it be that MLK was a hunter? AB3 talks about a video of a 7-year-old not wanting a wife. What are the pros and cons of being in a relationship as a hunter? How does AB3 go about shed hunting? AB3 talks about trade show season, including Archery Trade Association, The Shot Show, Safari Club International, and Fisharama & Turkeyrama. 3 Key Points: AB3 has contacted at The King Center to see if they have any information on where Dr. Martin Luther King was a hunter and is waiting to hear back. You may have the freedom to do what you want when you aren't in a relationship. But there are some couples that do outdoor activities together. Deer shed their antlers and dogs can pick up the smell of the sheds. Tweetable Quotes: “A Facebook video that was posted by a young 7-year-old who basically said he doesn't want a wife because the wife would try to tell him that he couldn't go hunting and he wasn't going for that.” – AB3 “There are some people that are in relationships or feel they don't want to be in relationships because the wife is going to tell them what to do, when to do it, how to do. Telling them what they can do with their time.” – AB3 “There are several, several, several, trade shows that happen now all the way up until August, September, right before deer season opens up.” – AB3 Resources Mentioned: The Bryant Land Country Podcast Follow Bryant Land on social media: Linkedin | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube Archery Trade Association: archerytrade.org/trade-show The Shot Show: shotshow.org Safari Club International: safariclub.org Fisharama & Turkeyrama: buckarama.net/fisharama-turkeyrama

Patrick Durkin of Waupaca, Wisconsin, is an award-winning outdoor writer, newspaper columnist, and general outdoors reporter. He also provides editing services for books and magazines. He was a contributing editor of the Archery Trade Association and writes frequently for national archery and hunting magazines. In addition, he has been MeatEater's wildlife research contributor since June 2018, and an editor for Inside Archery magazine, an archery industry trade publication, since December 2014. Durkin has written a weekly outdoors newspaper column since 1984. His weekly column has appeared regularly in over 20 Wisconsin newspapers during his career. His magazine articles have appeared in several publications such as the American Hunter, Outdoor Life, Bugle (Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation), Quality Whitetails, Whitetail Journal, etc. It's no secret there is a lack of participation in the hunting industry by people of color. The lack of representation of people of color in the hunting industry is what led Durkin to become curious about this issue. It led him to ask the question is hunting too White? As a result of this curiosity he wrote an article "Is Hunting Too White?". As a Black hunter I'm always asked if I'm fearful of hunting with White men with guns. Some hunting outfitters have their names with the word plantation on it without realizing how that impacts people. Frankly, hunting is a test on how well you get along with people, especially when you're sitting in a blind. We discussed some things that need to change so hunting can be more inclusive. Organizations are entering more cities to reach more Black and Latino children. Durkin recognizes there are lots of things he doesn't have to think about because of his position in the world. Not everyone has access to land, rivers and different places to hunt and fish. This is a thoughtful discussion about a touchy subject. Before you go… We enjoy sharing tips and resources with all of you so please keep them coming. As I stated before I want this to be place where you, my audience gets involved in the conversation. Last thing... If you know anyone that I should be interviewing and have any feedback about the show or any topics that you would like to hear please shoot me an email ab3bryantland@gmail.com. Hardy Face Paint – Meet the owners of Hardy FacePaint Hello. We are Brian and Mariah Hardy, creators of HARDY FACEPAINT and avid, responsible hunters just like you. Brian had always used face masks, preferring the convenience of masks to the mess and trouble of paint. However, all of that changed the first time Brian went bowhunting in Kansas, the ultimate whitetail hunting state. As a big buck came into his line of sight, Brian drew back on his bow only to have his facemask catch on his release! There was nothing for him to do except draw down and watch as the buck of a lifetime walk away. Determined to never experience a facemask mishap like this again, Brian purchased every face paint product on the market. No matter what he tried, the paint ended up feeling greasy, messy, and itchy. Some of the products smelled like crayons. As any good bowhunter will tell you, it is imperative to be scent- free on the hunt. Mariah had never liked face masks as they would constantly ride up on her face and hindered her shooting. However, as someone with sensitive skin, she didn’t have the option of using harsh and irritating face paints. Not only that, Mariah is also a safe cosmetic advocate who lives a wholefood and organic lifestyle, so the toxic and harmful ingredients of face paint were not only impractical for her, but also in conflict with her values. Brian and Mariah became increasingly frustrated trying to find a camouflage face paint that was not only made with quality ingredients, but was also effective, safe, gentle, and easy to both apply and remove. After exhausting all of the existing options, they decided to take matters into their own hands. They left no detail unconsidered when creating HARDY FACEPAINT. They thought about what hunting face paint would ideally look, smell, and feel like. They researched ingredients, safety, and effectiveness, as well as ease of application and removal. They essentially dreamed up a hunter’s perfect face paint and engineered HARDY FACEPAINT to be exactly that. IBO – The International Bowhunting Organization (IBO) was created in 1984 by a dedicated group of bowhunters who shared the desire to ensure that bowhunting and the ideals of wildlife conservation survive, expand and flourish to be shared, enjoyed and passed on to future generations. By its charter, the International Bowhunting Organization’s purpose is “To promote, encourage, and foster the sport of bowhunting; further bowhunter education; act as a political coordinator and liaison for the protection and advancement of bowhunting; function as a clearinghouse for essential bowhunter information; and adhere to the basic ideal of the unification of bowhunters.” Soon after its inception, the IBO launched the Triple Crown of Bowhunting, consisting of three national tournaments hosted in separate states. Utilizing identical rules and classes, the Triple Crown culminates with the crowning of national champions of various age, gender, and equipment classes. The series continues to expand each year and has become the undisputed indicator of the best individual performers and equipment in the sport of 3-D archery and bowhunting. In 1989, the IBO established a series of sanctioned tournaments worldwide in which participants may qualify to compete in an annual finale to be held in a large and accommodating, destination-type venue. Presently, hundreds of local and regional bowhunting clubs host qualifying events for the opportunity to participate in 3D Archery’s largest and most prestigious event, The IBO World Championship. National Deer Alliance – NDA’s Initiative The mission of the National Deer Alliance (NDA) is to serve as the guardian of wild deer conservation (white-tailed deer, mule deer, black-tailed deer, Coues deer, and Key deer), and our hunting heritage. Formally incorporated in May 2015, the NDA is driven to assemble and unite a diverse group of stakeholders that includes hunters, managers, and the hunting industry to help create positive outcomes for deer and deer hunting. A strong board of directors that represents organizations and groups such as the Mule Deer Foundation, Quality Deer Management Association, Whitetails Unlimited, Archery Trade Association, National Shooting Sports Foundation, Wildlife Management Institute, Vista Outdoor, and Bass Pro Shops, leads NDA. The Need – Deer are the most commonly pursued and economically important game animal in North America. Despite the fact that 83% of the more than 14,000,000 hunters in the United States identified as deer hunters, there was no national organization geared toward protecting the interests of all deer hunters and the deer hunting industry before the formation of NDA. Amazingly, less than 1% of deer hunters belong to a national conservation organization dedicated to the protection of deer and our deer hunting heritage. This is where NDA comes in. The time has come for deer hunters, managers, and the hunting industry to organize and provide a united front to address current and emerging threats to deer hunting and our heritage.

“Part of our vision is to build up a product line of products that can enhance the outdoor experience for the sportsman, but not take away from it.”— Chad VanCamp, Product Manager with Garmin Today, January 9, GoWild launches a product with Garmin. This week, I'll be at the 2019 Archery Trade Association’s trade show in Garmin's booth to talk about this integration with the Garmin Connect IQ system. I'm sure over the next few weeks you’ll hear more about the product that we landed on. This interview is to bring you the people behind it, how we even got this relationship rolling and what’s so damn cool about it. Some of you probably know of Chad VanCamp. He’s become a frequent flyer on the Gritty podcast since the Xero bow sight came out last year. Chad and I got to be buddies once this whole thing got started, which is key to any good working relationship. I have to say thank you to Chad, as well as Nick, Audra and Jennifer for all of their help this last year. I know we came into this being small and honestly even a little unproven, but you all saw something in us and believed in team GoWild. I appreciate the opportunity to show you just how good my team can be. Team GoWild came together with Garmin to build an incredible product, and it’s one that I couldn’t have dreamed up alone. As a tech company, few things are more exciting than moving into unchartered waters, and that’s exactly where we are this week. Restless Native is brought to you by Houston Safari Club Foundation. This organization is a great supporter of hunters and conservation, and I am proud to partner with them. Hunting and conservation, what’s not to like, right? If you agree, great. Then I want you to come on to Houston, Texas with me to attend the Houston Safari Club Foundation’s Convention and Hunting Expo. This is a great chance for a family trip or a break away with the buddies. The convention is a celebration of wildlife, wild places and the hunting lifestyle we all love. It has thousands of visitors and exhibitors coming from all over the globe for a three day exposition. Beyond the convention, you can experience some amazing entertainment, with performances from folks like Corey Morrow, Rickey Davis and Billboard chart-frequent flyer, Kevin Fowler. There are banquets and luncheons, auctions and more stuff than I possibly have time to tell you about right now. And as Joe said in his most recent interview, Houston is a great place to spend a weekend and grub. You know what the best part of all of this is? Your tickets and support of this expo help fulfill Houston Safari Club Foundation’s mission of preserving the sport of hunting through education, conservation and the promotion of our hunting heritage. The show is January 25 through the 27th in Houston Texas. I will be wandering the floor on January 26. Please send me a direct message on GoWild if you’re going to be there and we’ll meetup. This week the Hunt Fish Journal talks to Jay McAninch President and CEO of the Archery Trade Association. This interview with Jay will give you a good understanding of who the ATA is and the important roll they have in supporting and expanding archery and the associated outdoor equipment. Areas like technical and financial support for expanding archery in such areas as schools, parks and small business as well as manufacturing, and the aspiring product inventor. The ATA is not only instrumental in the USA but also in many other countries around the world. Jay's keen understanding of archery and the promotion of this great sport is evident as he speaks to the HFJ about issues and challenges facing all the different areas of archery. The far reaching help and capabilities of the ATA is brought to light in this 30 minute interview with Jay McAninch. Remember our sponsors! On this episode of Gritty Bowmen, we travel to Louisville Kentucky to attend the ATA trade show--ATA stands for Archery Trade Association. The ATA Trade Show is the archery and bowhunting industry’s LARGEST show. The show is a member-driven event to promote commerce within the archery and bowhunting industry. In today’s podcast we visit with Eva Shockey. Eva’s dad, Jim Shockey, is one of the most well-known hunters in the world. Today, Eva co-hosts "Jim Shockey's Hunting Adventures" TV show and represents the Shockey family at outdoor trade and consumer shows. Eva was a breathe of fresh air. She was easy to talk to, down to earth, and an excellent ambassador for hunting--challenging the stereotypical image of the knuckle-dragging, fist pumping, male hunter; Eva makes it difficult for those against hunting to claim that hunters are uneducated, heartless, animal-hating human beings. And for this, I thank her. I hope you enjoy the show.

The 2015 Archery Trade Show Association's Annual Trade Show has come and gone once again, but Jay and Dusty were able to capture the moment with an adventurous trek to the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Show was held this year from January 8-10 and is held each January for eager hunting apparell buyers and sellers to gawk and pitch the latest merchandise for the year. Anything and everything hunting is here and is the basis for what each outdoor retailer, large and small, will stock in their stores. A private show, it is only open to hunting industry insiders but for those that can attend, including celebrities, hunting television personalities, bloggers, writers and outdoor podcasters, it allows attendees a glimpse at what's NEW for 2015.
