Ep. 126 - Neil ZLOZOWER! New ED by ZLOZ book! Van Halen!
Darren and Steve talk with music journalist Steven Rosen, author of the huge and awesome book, "Tonechaser: Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey With Edward Van Halen." The book tells the tale of Rosen's friendship with Eddie, from first their meeting (at a Cheap Trick show at the Whisky A Go Go in Los Angeles in 1977!) to how it ended in 2003, and everything in between. Steven tells how, after many years, he ended up writing the book, the labor of love and dedication it became -- 580 pages! -- Neil Zlozower contributing never-before-published photos, his thoughts on Valerie Bertinelli, Michael Anthony, David Lee Roth (of course!), playing guitar with Eddie, interviewing him multiple times and a lot more. At the top, your "DLR Cast" hosts touch on the little bit of Dave and DLR-releated news, and the lack thereof. "Tonechaser: Understanding Edward: My 26-Year Journey With Edward Van Halen" is now available via the author at Facebook.com/TONECHASERBOOK and via Amazon, Reverb, and Etsy. Sean also shared the secret to losing 40 pounds. (0:00) Live Nation's Jimmy Koplik popped on quickly this morning to announce that Bruce Springsteen is coming to Mohegan Sun in March. That's how he wound up taking over the photoshoot session for Van Halen II and working with some of the biggest names of the 70's, 80's, and 90's. (17:48) AJ's latest challenge involved taking repeated rubber band snaps to the forehead, every time he failed to correctly answer a trivia question. Apparently it's all too common to have poo thrown at you when you walk into a patient's room. (0:00) Dumb Ass News - Judy the Nurse had one more story for us, and then audio from a very real company that is offering the "Loved One Launcher," where your cremated remains are fired into the sky and scattered everywhere. In this episode I chat with rock photographer Neil Zlozower. Neil is considered by many to be one of the best rock photographers of all time, although he refers to himself as merely a “fairly successful photographer." He's photographed many of rock's icons including Zeppelin, The Stones, Van Halen, Motley Crue, Sheryl Crow, Guns & Roses, Eric Clapton, Pantera and many, many, many more. These days Neil spends most of his time running Atlas Icons, an agency he co-founded and that specializes in licensing of music photography. You can find his work at www.zloz.com and atlasicons.com. WARNING: Neil is opinionated and at times colorful in his choice of words. If you're easily offended by language or things otherwise non-PC, this episode may not be for you. Consider yourself forewarned. We talk about is Neil's career, changes in the music business, and the business of photography. He describes his early days in photography as a glorified fan, inspired by a Cream concert he attended in 1968. In spite of getting a C in high school photography, Neil's body of work is definitely world class. He told me he always wanted to go down as the best in the business. Interestingly, but not uncommon for guests of this podcast, he feels strongly that success is less about talent, but more about business sense and drive. Although our conversation didn't go where I typically expect conversations of this podcast to go, I believe we touch on a few things you can use in your music journey.
