Coming to Broadway: he's a baritone black belt with a love for Les Misérables and a degree in kicking ass–it's Kindergarten Cop, the Musical! I chatted with the self-described chocolate charmer Samson Night about swapping Arabic 101 for Intro to Show Choir, teaching children by day and commanding the stage at night, eschewing striptease archetypes and channeling the Shaft, saying no-no to go-go and yes to demystifying charisma, getting crowned Queen of Exotic World and contending with criticism, and how preserving the future legacy of burlesque is dependent in part on the nuanced conversations our community-industry is having today.  Shout Outs to Ben Vereen, Bawdy Suit, Margo Mayhem, Ruth or Dare, Ray Gunn, Jezebel Express, the Slipper Room, Veronica Viper, Jimmy Guilford, Jo Weldon, and the late great Dixie Evans. Currently starring on Broadway and at Carnegie Hall, he is also a theater educator and utilizes techniques learned and used from those experiences to teach a variety of burleque and performance workshops.  Voted #6 on the 2022 Burlesque Top 50, Samson has been featured as the closer for the opening night of the New York Burlesque Festival and has won multiple titles including "Queen Of The Roses" at the Oregon Burlesque Festival as well as "Best Group" with his partner Margo Mayhem and most recently, Queen of Exotic World at the 2023 Burlesque Hall of Fame.

Tired of always fighting some sort of injustice? Whether it’s ageism, sexism or fighting against the traditional (and totally unattainable) standards of female beauty, sometimes the only thing we want, is to relax and enjoy life. Angie Pontani shows you how to fall in love with yourself as you are, and enjoy food, family, and life as it comes. Top take-a-ways: Find the perfect balance between choreography (planning your life) and connection with the audience (living in the moment). Reclaim your sexuality and break free from traditional standards of what women should and should not do, wear, or look like. Use humor to help you roll with the punches and stay out of victim-hood or despair. How to feel sexy, fit, and strong at any age, and any condition (even while pregnant, or if your butt and thighs are “too big”). The power of food, cooking, and sharing recipes to connect you to your ancestors and create a legacy for the future. “I really like people to cry at my titty show!” //In part 2, Fancy and I get to the bottom of that age old debate: is burlesque stripping? Fancy recounts the plastic bag routine that won her Miss Coney Island 2016, as well as some of her favorite acts by Tiger Bay, Julie Atlas Muz & Mat Fraser, and Darlinda Just Darlinda (including an apocalyptic one that’s almost too prescient...) //Fancy Feast is a burlesque performer, sex educator, and writer. “I don’t experience my naked body as inherently erotic. It’s my body, and I like it. It has so much more to do for me with the glamour and the transgression. That’s the part where I’m comfortable and excited. Burlesque was the first time I ever saw an exalted fat body.” Fancy Feast joins me for a talk about the art of burlesque. But first we discuss her Jewish Currents piece about identity fetishism and what kind of Jewish-themed porn she would make. Her act called 50 Shades of Oy Vey is a great segue into a discussion of the money she’s put into big rhinestone, why she’s not body positive, and whether good girls can do burlesque. While porn studies delve into history and theory books in order to legitimize its position within academia, scholars can often times lose track of the most essential voices that offer us an important perspective on the industry, those of the porn performers themselves! In this episode, I talk with gay porn performer Chris Harder. Harder’s journey through the industry is an interesting one mostly due to the fact that he comes from a theater background. He studied theater and queer theory while going to school in North Dakota, so his porn performances reflect a journey of a young man coming to the big city who documents his sexual awakening via his onscreen performances. However, theatrical ambitions were not stifled by his porn career. In this interview, we talk about his one-man show that he wrote and stars in titled: Porn to be a Star. The show is a hilarious romp where he plays various fictional characters that reflect on his journey growing up in the Dakota plains, moving to the big city, and discovering a new side of himself by performing in porn. Harder is also one of the world’s leading boylesque performers. He teaches classes teaching people how to perform for burlesque theater and has traveled the world performing his act. In this interview we talk about how his burlesque work is intertwined with is porn performance, how is sexual inspirations influence his work, and how the queer theory that he learned in school still influences his work to this day. Harder is one of the kindest and funniest personalities in the industry, and I think that comes across well in this interview.    More info about Harder’s tour dates can be found here @HARDERburlesque New York Times feature about Harder’s burlesque classes “Let me Entertain You: How I was Banned from Boylesque Because I Work in Porn” Clips from his one-man show Harder’s performance at the New York Burlesque Festival pornocultures.podomatic.com facebook.com/AcademicSex @PornoCultures https://concordia.academia.edu/brandrroyo

Program 38: Duchess!
