In this episode, I open up about my journey with addiction, the struggles of relapse, and the long road to sobriety. I share what it was like to lose control, the wake-up calls that forced me to confront my reality, and the mindset shifts that helped me push through. Sobriety wasn't a one-time decision—it was a fight, moment by moment. I talk about the emotional and physical toll of addiction, the impact on those around me, and why true change only happens when you're ready for it.If you've ever battled addiction, supported someone who has, or just want a raw, unfiltered look into what recovery really looks like, this episode is for you.SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:00:00 - Introduction02:31 - Jumping into sobriety07:43 - Blacking out and losing control11:46 - The moment I knew I had to quit16:56 - Do interventions really work?24:17 - The turning point: facing my own mortality32:12 - How addiction rewires the brain42:15 - The power of staying present49:59 - How I fight the voice that says “just one drink”Thanks for listening. You might have heard the phrase ‘black out drunk’ before, which might evoke images of someone asleep or passed out. But that’s not what it is. Blacking out is when you’re conscious and walking around, but can’t remember anything afterwards. And that’s what has happened to journalist Sarah Hepola, dozens of times. Drinking became a normal part of her life, like a lot of people; a social lubricant, a way to meet new people, and a party starter. But as the nights got more and more hazy, she realised she needed to make a change... THE END BITS: Subscribe to Mamamia With thanks to Sarah Hepola. In this episode, I dive into a question a friend recently asked me: “Is blacking out a real thing?” For me, it was not only real—it was a recurring part of my drinking journey for more than half of my drinking career. I share my personal experiences of getting so drunk that I would black out, staying awake and seemingly functioning, yet later having no memory of what happened. I talk about the aftermath of these episodes, like discovering the hurtful things I said to a friend and wondering why she wasn't speaking to me. It's an honest and vulnerable look at the impact of blackout drinking and how it played a major role in my decision to quit.

Do you find yourself giving alcohol various 'jobs' depending on what you're facing? While Joy counseled young people about the dangers of alcohol, she secretly beat herself up for drinking more than she wanted to. Feeling torn, she quit her job as a counselor. She had always given alcohol different jobs in her life. First, it helped her fit in with her peers. Then, she used it to manage her grief and, later, to relax after a long day. Throughout her journey, drinking felt like the thing to do because everyone around her was doing it. But when she discovered This Naked Mind, she started picking apart her deeply held beliefs about alcohol. In this episode, Joy shares her incredible journey to living a more wholesome life for herself and eventually finding her way back to the career she loves as a coach. In this episode, Annie and Joy will discuss: - Drinking to mask insecurities and fit in - Blacking out after drinking at 14 - The influence of alcohol in her family history - The health consequences of heavy drinking - Partying heavily even as an academic student - How alcohol shaped her friendships and relationships - Drinking to mask pain and manage grief - Traveling to find herself - Counseling others while battling her own drinking - Giving kids the tools to understand alcohol - And other topics… Related Episodes: EP 262: Reader Question – How do I deal with death and grief without alcohol: https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-262-reader-question-grief-without-alcohol/ EP 439: Naked Life Story – Nat X: https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-439-naked-life-story-nat-x EP 547: Naked Life Story – Claire: https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-547-naked-life-story-claire/ Resources Mentioned: Joy's Website: https://www.afreelifecoaching.com Joy's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/afreelife_/ Joy's Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AFreeLifeCoach/ Ready to take the next step on your journey? It was a busy weekend of dumb moments in sports, but Sean doesn't remember perhaps the dumbest of them all - by the time Texas Longhorns fans were throwing trash on the football field, he was already blacked out. Oops. We're also discussing Cheryl Reeve criticizing officiating after her Minnesota Lynx lost to the New York Liberty in the WNBA Finals, why it's okay to boo football players when they're not good people, and an awkward moment when someone gets injured during a pickup basketball game.Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. This week's podcast guest is Chris, who received a constant message while growing up as a kid: 'We don't talk about our problems.' Facing struggles at home, Chris embarked on a search for a sense of belonging. Initially, he found it within the punk music scene and took his first drink at the age of 13. That moment marked his first experience with drinking, getting drunk, and blacking out. From that point on, he never learned to drink any differently throughout his entire life. Happy Thursday! So happy to be able to sit down and chat it up a lil extra with you all. We have a fun episode catching up on some questions that I didn't get to get to Tuesday. First we talk snow days and taking it slow, the holidays and toxic family, how to not take it to personally and also communication 101! We talk feeling tired and how to participate in spirituality when you're exhausted, how to spark creativity and find passion & imagination again after losing it, situationships; what a green flag situationship looks like and a red flag, how to make more of a situationship, alcohol mistakes, embarrassing yourself and blacking out scary stories. We talk boundaries in relationships and having to share your man's attention, and finally some inspiration that it's ok to change! And sometimes the hardest decision is the best decision. Hope you all have a wonderful holiday weekend and I can't wait to catch up with everyone on Tuesday! MUAH!
“I used alcohol as a numbing tool for anxiety, stress, frustration and awkwardness. I used it to bypass all those icky feelings, and that's how I knew it wasn't healthy.” I'm opening up about my decision to quit drinking after a tumultuous four-year relationship with alcohol. Growing up around alcoholism and substance abuse, I lived most of my adulthood drug and alcohol-free. But after a difficult cross-country move to Dallas, Texas in 2018, I turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism. In this episode, I discuss the bad decisions and blackouts that stemmed from weekend binge-drinking and how the consequences forced me to rethink my relationship with alcohol. In part two, I talk about my six months of sobriety, the non-alcoholic alternatives I embraced and the benefits of being alcohol-free.
