True Tales From Old Houses is back! Season Eleven is off to a good start with a fresh, new logo and an episode packed with old-house fun.  This week, Stacy and Daniel answer a listener's question about public art and painted brick. Are public murals a good idea? How are neighborhoods affected? Is painting a giant orange wizard on a building ever a good idea? Daniel has big feelings about all of it.  Then, Stacy and Daniel welcome Barry + Jordan, better known as The Brownstone Boys. This Brooklyn-based renovation duo quickly fell in love with Brownstones and each other. Their work combines the love of preservation and restoration with functional, modern touches. An American Entrepreneur Goes to China   At the age of 14 Mitch told his uncle that he wanted to go to China. This Brooklyn-born teenager's statement became his path to a business life that would challenge and change many Chinese business perceptions.  After a stint with Anheuser-Busch, Inc. in China, Mitch became the founder of Super 8 Hotels and grew it to over 1,000 locations throughout the country. The route to growing an economy motel chain in China was full of bumps in the road, but Mitch cajoled, bargained, and made it all happen. That is a story in and of itself, one that we explore in the podcast. His entrepreneurial perspective took Mitch on many unexpected adventures. Today Mitch is a fellow at Harvard University where he advocates pragmatism in U.S./China relationships. Part of his relationship with Chinese culture extends to an exploration of Daoism, Confucian philosophy and Tibetan Buddhism. In addition, meditation has had a profound impact on his view of life. Mitch notes that:   “Until you meditate, you don't really understand that you can observe your thoughts. “   And that opens a path into a a greater life changing consciousness. It's tough getting any stationery brand off the ground, but one that goes an entirely new direction is a real challenge. Just ask Sharon Glassman of Smile Songs. This Brooklyn fashion writer turned Colorado songwriter actually came to stationery circuitously — as she was envisioning a way for her listeners to access her anytime, she actually was planning on making music boxes at first!          Sharon quickly realized that our smart phones ARE our music boxes ... with a little help from QR codes, that is. But a product that requires explanation can feel incongruous to its category counterparts, so Sharon decided that rather than exhibiting at a traditional gift show, she would instead try the resort and souvenir route. So, she created her Natural Happiness Collection, featuring earthy symbols like mountains, water, flowers, and sun, pairing each with an inspirational message and a song about personal growth and happiness. Then, she took a deep breath and set up her very first table at her very first trade show, The Las Vegas Souvenir & Resort Gift Show. Sharon relaxed once she got her first sale within the first hour, but was really surprised on her last day, when she received the show award for Best New Product at the show! Flush from her success, Sharon drops in The Paper Fold to discuss how she developed Smile Songs, and that although the paper medium may evolve, the message is just the same. She shares lessons learned from her first trade show, and how she is bringing next-level collaborations to her most harmonious brand!

How often do you try to fail? If the answer is not often, you're too comfortable in the things you're directing your energy towards. If you're not failing, you're not trying hard enough, you're not trying anything new or risky. If you're not failing, you're not truly learning. Elisabeth Cardiello knows just how powerful failure can be. If you've seen the Netflix documentary, "Coffee For All," you may already know Elisabeth Cardiello. This Brooklyn-native had her first business cards at six and first product on shelves at 13. After college, business school and four years on Wall Street, she dealt with loss, found her passion and started a coffee company called Caffè Unimatic. After a decade of deconstructing why conversations over coffee are more genuine and less stress inducing than the conversations we have in boardrooms, she created a framework to reinvent the way organizations communicate. BRAVE Conversations Over Coffee is rooted in the tenets of neuroscience, positive psychology and hostage negotiation and gives organizations a way to address sensitive topics such as inclusion, burnout and mental health in order to build trust and unlock greater productivity. In addition to working with leaders at high stress companies like Facebook, Dalberg, Sumitomo Mitsui Bank and the NYPD, Elisabeth is an instructor for Simon Sinek's InspireU, two time TEDx speaker, spoken at UN Conferences, given Congressional briefings and has been featured by Forbes, NBC and Goop, among others. She also created a methodology that builds confidence in the young women and has traveled around the country speaking in Entrepreneurship Departments and Women in Business organizations. Her family is still wondering where that shy 9 year old went...Elisabeth’s mission is to build a world where coffee is the catalyst that inspires deeper listening, safer spaces and hence, greater access to our own creativity, connection and fulfillment. In this episode, Elisabeth thoughtfully shares with us how failure shaped her life and her career.Listen to this episode and learn about:- How Chris and Elisabeth are related (0:51)- Elisabeth giving credit and thanks to her childhood babysitter, Miss D. Tired of always fighting some sort of injustice? Whether it’s ageism, sexism or fighting against the traditional (and totally unattainable) standards of female beauty, sometimes the only thing we want, is to relax and enjoy life. Angie Pontani shows you how to fall in love with yourself as you are, and enjoy food, family, and life as it comes. Top take-a-ways: Find the perfect balance between choreography (planning your life) and connection with the audience (living in the moment). Reclaim your sexuality and break free from traditional standards of what women should and should not do, wear, or look like. Use humor to help you roll with the punches and stay out of victim-hood or despair. How to feel sexy, fit, and strong at any age, and any condition (even while pregnant, or if your butt and thighs are “too big”). The power of food, cooking, and sharing recipes to connect you to your ancestors and create a legacy for the future. One of today’s top burlesque performers, Angie Pontani, The Italian Stallionette, dazzles on stages around the world, as well as carries her art into other fields and genres, including her popular cooking blog, fitness, writing and television. October is breast cancer awareness month, and because my work focuses on confronting taboo head on and talking about important things that we are uncomfortable talking about, we are going to spend the month talking about all things Burlesque & Boobies!Tired of always fighting some sort of injustice? This week, we talk with our dearest friend Nailah Griffin. This Brooklyn-born beauty wears many hats as an artist, mother, food activist, and community builder. Her art speaks through moods and food, reverberating the joys and injustices of living as a black woman navigating American life. She currently is working on building a community garden to help feed those in the community who need it most in New Orleans. We had the privilege to catch up with Nailah and explore how we elevate, and often sabotage, our growth through "Integrity." We discuss the challenges and empowerment that inform how we try on our fullest, most seen, and authentic self-expression in our work, relationships, and for ourselves. We acknowledge that often our integrity isn't "for us" and how that generational and the trappings of our society shape how we self-express. Honoring our Integrity has the power to uplift us, especially when we feel like we can show up and truly honor our word and intentions, but integrity also has a shadow side that can heighten our insecurities, and minimize our efforts to love ourselves. We explore "who our integrity is for" This conversation is an ode to spiritual growth, friendship, and the journey we are all on to amplify our truths. To find out more about Nailah's latest art exhibitions, how you can support the community garden, and her growth as a mother, artist, and food activist, follow (@msmowgli) her on IG: https://www.instagram.com/msmowgli/ We are forever evolving, growing our lives to live into our purpose with honesty and fulfillment. This episode may contain uncomfortable conversations, but I promise transparency.    "Racism is a construct that is a complicated system of dynamics that is designed to benefit a particular set of people to the detriment of and exclusion of people outside of that particular set that racism benefits.   As with all societal constructs racism mutates to maintain its effectiveness. This mutation can move from a space of awareness to a space of oblivion and still be just as effective.   Racism is a very complicated system of intricate spaces and devices that utilize devices like oppression to conjure dynamics like hate and shame which trigger intricate emotional and physiological responses in the body that become subconscious habits in the bodies of both the oppressors and the oppressed.   Without awareness of how it shows up in the nervous system of every individual, there is no hope to dismantle it." - Tah Whitty   Tah Whitty hosts of Mentor In The Mirror Podcast with his partner and is in love with people. They are medium- to medium-full bodied and are characterized by high carbonation and tangy Czech varieties of hops that impart floral aromas and a crisp, bitter finish. The hallmark of a fresh pilsner is the dense, white head. The alcohol levels must be such as to give a rounded mouthfeel, typically around 5 percent ABV. Classic pilsners are thoroughly refreshing, but they are delicate and must be fresh to show their best. Great pilsners are technically difficult to make and relatively expensive to produce.-Color - Straw to gold-Clarity: Appearance should be bright; chill haze should not be present-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Medium-low to medium- Up to 25% corn and/or rice in the grist should be used.-Hop Aroma and Flavor and Bitterness Medium to high, exhibiting attributes typical of noble-type hops -Body: Medium-low to medium-ABV: 4.9%-6.0% - higher ABV than other Pilsners-Glassware: Pilsner Glass - Typically a tall, slender and tapered 12-ounce glass, shaped like a trumpet at times, that captures the sparkling effervesces and colors of a Pils while maintaining its head. Listen to Adrienne and Katarina dissect the nuances hiding within the lyrics of San Fermin, discover references to Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises and Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest as well as ponder life, death, love and fear. NOTE: Contains a spoiler for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

August 22, 2016:  I was very lucky to find a few minutes to speak with Capathia Jenkins this week.  When not performing on TV and Broadway, she is busy crisscrossing the globe performing on the world's biggest stages with the finest orchestras.  Last year I performed in Philadelphia, Atlanta and Jacksonville with Capathia in Classic Soul. She brought the house down in all three cities, every single night of the show.  It was a real thrill to hear her sing each night and to perform with her.  In this episode we learn about Capathia's early influences including the church and R&B, the significance of a teacher's encouragement, how her aural skills broadened at Temple University, the moment that she felt as though she had finally made it,  why live music is always her favorite, and her deep passion for her work with Covenant House.  This Brooklyn-born and raised actress most recently starred as ‘Medda' in the hit Disney production of Newsies' on Broadway. She made her Broadway debut in The Civil War, where she created the role of Harriet Jackson.  An active concert artist, Ms. Jenkins has appeared with orchestras around the world including the Pittsburgh Symphony (with Marvin Hamlisch), National Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, The Philly Pops, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic, just to name a few.  Her Television credits include 30 Rock, the Practice, Law & Order SVU, the Sopranos, Law & Order and The Wiz Live!   When not acting and singing she spends much of her free time supporting the efforts of Covenant House by serving on the board of directors and organizing Sleep Out: Broadway Edition.
