EPISODE 86 -  “ANNA MAY WONG: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” - 5/5/2025 Anna May Wong was once the most famous Chinese woman in the world. The trailblazing actress, philanthropist, and fashion icon appeared in over 60 films and was a celebrated star, yet, at the time, she was not allowed to kiss a Caucasian man on screen, which limited the roles she could take, and she was not allowed to buy a house in Beverly Hills. A strange dichotomy, indeed. In recent years, she has enjoyed a much-deserved resurgence. Known as a Trailblazer and a cultural icon, she paved the way for generations of Asian and Asian American actors by proving that talent and perseverance could transcend racist casting conventions. Her life and career continue to influence conversations about diversity, representation, and the politics of race in Hollywood. This week, she is our Star of the Month. Welcome to Reel Britannia-a very British podcast about very British movies ...with just a hint of professionalism. Back to 1959 this week and a classic starring Horst Buchholz and John and Hayley Mills Tiger Bay (1959) Rough-and-tumble street urchin Gillie (Hayley Mills) witnesses the brutal killing of a young woman at the hands of visiting Polish sailor Korchinsky (Horst Buchholz). Instead of reporting the crime to the authorities, Gillie merely pockets a prize for herself -- Korchinsky's shiny black revolver -- and flees the scene. When Welsh Detective Graham (John Mills) discovers that Gillie has the murder weapon, the fiery young girl weaves a web of lies to throw him off course.   "It'll be all right, he says. A fat lot of good the police are. We've got one in the house and a murder's done right under his nose and now here's a child whose got hold of a gun and they don't even know where she is!" Mahmood Mattan was born in 1923 and was a young man when he left his home in Hargeisa, in what later became Somaliland, to live in Cardiff in Wales. He settled in a community called Tiger Bay, worked as a seaman, got married and had three children. In 1952 he was accused of murdering Lily Volpert, a local businesswoman. He was found guilty and executed by hanging in prison. For years Mahmood Mattan's family maintained his innocence and his conviction was quashed in 1998. Last week, 70 years after Mahmood Mattan's execution, South Wales police apologised and admitted the prosecution was "flawed". In today's Africa Daily, Victoria Uwonkunda has been finding out more about the life and death of Mahmood Mattan from Danielle Fahiya, the presenter/producer of a new BBC podcast called Mattan: Injustice of a Hanged Man.

In September 1952 Mahmood Hussein Mattan became the last to be executed at Cardiff Prison, but Mahmood had in fact been framed by the police and 70 years later South Wales Police formally apologised to his family for his wrongful conviction.Mahmood originally hailed from Somalia and had been a merchant seaman who had ended up settling in Cardiff and marrying a Welsh woman called Laura Williams. They lived in the Tiger Bay district of Cardiff and had three children before their separation in 1950. Mahmood faced racism and discrimination and had several encounters with the police. His vocal distrust of the police had made him unpopular with the local force though and when Lily Volpert, a Cardiff shopkeeper, was found murdered and her shop robbed they quickly turned to Mahmood. Despite a lack of any firm evidence linking him to the crime, he became the prime suspect. He was poorly represented in court and facing a hostile jury he was convicted in July 1952 and sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out three months late. The case never went away though and his family kept the fight alive for 45 years until 1998 when his case was the first to be reviewed by the newly created Criminal Cases Review Commission. His conviction was quickly quashed but it was another 25 years before they received the apology they and Mahmood deserved. To discuss Mahmood's case author Nadifa Mohamed joins Dan for this episode of the podcast. Her novel The Fortune Men, which has been longlisted for the Booker Prize, is based on the case and she immersed herself in Mahmoud's life and the history of Cardiff's multicultural Tiger Bay area to bring this story of injustice to life. The audio editor was Dougal Patmore. If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today! To download the History Hit app please go to the Android or Apple store. In episode 91 we look at black artists who came to Britain from the 1920s to 1950s. Well the exception is Joe Deniz who was born in Cardiff. We start with Leslie(Hutch) Hutchinson. Born in Grenada in 1900 he arrived in England in the late 20s, via a stint in the U.S. He rapidly become the darling of high society with a refined, well mannered voice and piano. He made many records and appearence through the 1930s and 40s. His personal life was, well lets' say, lively. He had seven children by six different women and had affairs with Cole Porter, Ivor Novella, Tallulah Bankhead and Edwina Mountbatten. Amongst others.  By the 1950s his career had faded away and he died in London in 1969. Turner Layton and Tandy Johnstone were both born in the USA and met in New York. Their musical partnership found almost immediately success. Like Hutch they were adored by high society. They came to England in 1924 and their popularity grew. They are reckoned to have sold over 10 million records between 1924 and 1935. They appeared on the BBC and all over Europe. Their partnership was dissolved in 1935 when Tandy Johnstone was involved in a highly public divorce case. He eventually returned to the US, having married Raymonde Sandler, the subject of the divorce. He died in 1953. Layton stayed in Britain and had a successful solo career. He died in 1978. Archie Lewis was born in Jamaica in 1918 and came to Britain in 1942 to work in a munitions factory. He already had the a singing career in Jamaica and was soon working for ENSA in Britain. Here he met band leader Geraldo and he become one of his vocalists. He was very popular live and on record. His 1946 recording of While the Angulis were ringing sold over a million copies. He eventually returned to Jamaica, still performing live and on record. He died in 1988. I feel he really is a forgotten man in British poular music and an important part of the history of black artists on British entertainment. See a brief clip of him here: https://youtu.be/Is4WFhhJARg All these four artists were very much in the style of white vocalist of the time. In Hutch, Layton and Johnstone I'm thinking of Noel Coward. Archie Lewis was known as The Caribbean Crosby. Our only female artist here is Winifred Atwell. Trinidad born pianist. There really is nothing elite about her. She went straight for the popular and her Let's party records were No1 sellers. I prefer her boogie woogie. No need to tell you that much about Paul Robson and Josh White. Both men spent time, almost in exile in Britain, from their native US because of their political beliefs. We've played Carl Barriteau before. He emerged from Ken Snakehips Johnson's West Indian band and had a successful solo career. Joe Deniz was born in Wales, in the Tiger Bay docks area of Cardiff. He was one of three professional guitar playing brothers and was, of course, a main stay of Harry Parry's band. All these artist were pioneers in breaking down race barriers in British entertainment. Their work is mostly forgotten now or certainly under valued. Playlist: Hutch- The London I love, For all I care. Layton and Johnstone- Just an echo in the valley. Turner Layton- Question and Answer. Archie Lewis- In the land of begining again, The mission of the rose. Paul Robeson- Water Boy. Josh White- Hard time Blues. Winifred Atwell- Let's party part 1, Highland Boogie. Carl Barriteau( vocals Mae Cooper)- Primrose Hill, I'll get by(as long as I have you.) Harry Parry and his Radio Rhythm Club Sextet- Champagne. Joe Deniz on guitar.

It was a rainy March evening in the Tiger Bay area of Cardiff. 41 year old Lily Volpert was sitting down to her evening meal when there was a knock at the shop door. It had been a long day serving customers but she didn't like letting people down and besides, 1952 had been a tough year so far and every penny counted. She headed back into the front of her shop to see what was wanted. Twenty minutes later the well-loved and respected shopkeeper was found dead; her throat had been cut. So began a tragedy that has left an indelible stain on Welsh history. After a prolonged period of research and investigation of the controversy surrounding the building of a Military Medical Museum in Tiger Bay, Cardiff, we are excited to announce that the podcast ‘When Tiger Bay Roared' has now finally released. Throughout the podcast, we managed to clear some of the thick smoke surrounding the events leading to the decision to build a Museum focused on showcasing Britain's history of military medicine on Britannia Park, the last green space in the surrounding area. This fracturing decision by the Council was met with a vast array of negative reactions from different groups within the surrounding community, while others wholly supported it. By drawing on the views of senior officials working at the Museum as well as community leaders and other interested parties, we were able to bring together a host of contrasting opinions while critically analysing them in the historical context of the British military and the colonial expansion that took place in the late 19th century. Somali-British author Nadifa Mohamed is the writer of the renowned novels Black Mamba Boy and The Orchard of Lost Souls. A regular contributor to The Guardian and the BBC, she is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and is a lecturer in creative writing at Royal Holloway, University of London. Mohamed is the recipient of the Somerset Maugham Award, and was named one of Granta's best young British novelists of 2013, and was a part of the 2014 Africa39 list of the most promising writers under the age of 40 from sub-Saharan Africa. A finalist for the 2021 Booker Prize, The Fortune Men is a novel about Mahmood Mattan, a young Somali sailor falsely accused of a violent crime in 1950s Cardiff, Wales. ''Nadifa Mohamed's The Fortune Men is a blues song cut straight from the heart. It tells about the unjust death of an innocent Black man caught up in a corrupt system. Nadifa's masterful evocation of the full life of Mahmood Mattan, the last man executed in Cardiff for a crime he was exonerated for forty years later, is brought alive with subtle artistry and heartbreaking humanity. In one man's life Mohamed captures the multitudes of homelands, dialects, hopes, and prayers of Somalis, Jews, Maltese and West Indians drawn in by the ships that filled Wales' Tiger Bay in the 1950's, all hoping for a future that eludes Mattan.''-Walter Mosley, author of Devil in a Blue Dress (recorded 12/15/2021)

In a warm and frank interview Hayley Mills talks to Michael Berkeley about the joys and difficulties of growing up in Hollywood as a child star and about the music that reminds her of her family. Hayley Mills was described by Walt Disney as ‘the greatest movie find in 25 years'. After winning a BAFTA at the age of just 12 in the British crime thriller Tiger Bay alongside her father, John Mills, she was signed up by Disney for a six-movie deal which included The Parent Trap, In Search of the Castaways and Pollyanna - for which she won an Oscar in 1961. In a career spanning more than six decades Hayley Mills has gone on to work all over the world in films, television and on stage, and she has just published a memoir of her early life called Forever Young. She tells Michael why she was unable to collect her Oscar, and about the agonies her parents suffered trying to decide whether or not she should sign with Disney and the pressures of juggling a double life between Hollywood and a chilly English boarding school. And she talks frankly about suffering from bulimia as a teenager, the problem of her mother's drinking, and how her life changed for ever at the age of 21, when she had to hand over almost all her childhood earnings to the Inland Revenue. A proud mother of two sons and grandmother of five, Hayley Mills chooses music by Tchaikovsky, by Mendelssohn and by Bach, which reminds her of her sister, the actor Juliet Mills; of her mother, the screenwriter Mary Hayley Bell; and of her partner, the actor Firdous Bamji. It's a brutally frank tale of racism and police corruption, terrible misogynist violence and the grim realities of sex work. In September 1952 Mahmood Hussein Mattan became the last to be hanged at Cardiff Prison, but Mahmood had in fact been framed by the police and 45 years later his conviction was quashed. Mahmood had been a merchant seaman who had ended up settling in Cardiff and marrying a Welsh woman called Laura Williams. They lived in the Tiger Bay district of Cardiff and had three children but in 1950 had separated. Mahmood had had a number of encounters with the police and had committed some minor offences such as small thefts. Poorly represented in court and facing a hostile jury he was convicted in July 1952 and sentenced to be hanged. The sentence was carried out three months later, but the case never truly went away. His family kept the fight alive for 45 years until 1998 when his case was the first to be reviewed by the newly created Criminal Cases Review Commission. His conviction was quickly quashed and his families fight for justice was finally over.To discuss Mahmood's case author Nadifa Mohamed joins Dan for this episode of the podcast. I loved this conversation: Nadifa Mohamed is an award-winning novelist whose most recent book The Fortune Men is a dazzling account of the real-life events surrounding the wrongful imprisonment and execution of a Somali seaman and father, who was the last man to be hanged in Cardiff prison. Set in Tiger Bay in the 1950s and fusing historical reportage and literary fiction, it has just been longlisted for a Booker prize - and quite right too. I loved talking to Nadifa about her unique approach to writing - her first book Black Mamba Boy was similarly inventive: part novel, part account of her father's life in Yemen and his journey to the UK. It was just so interesting to hear about the process of taking real life events - whether from newspapers or her family life - and applying artistic license to turn them into stories, as well as her stop-start approach to writing, the importance of 'fallow time', and adapting her work to opera. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Buy the book: https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-fortune-men/nadifa-mohamed/9780241466940 Edited by Chelsey Moore

Working with Fidelma Meehan, supported by a team of wonderful Bahá'í friends in Swindon, a programme was developed to help disaffected/vulnerable young people in the wider society. Aware that many young people are beset by a host of fears, worries, anxieties and insecurities along with superficial and discouraging relationships the team developed two special environments/experiences - the Tranquillity Zone and the Discovery Zone - to help them engage in rewarding personal and social behaviour - A host of aberrant, anti-social and various disorders experienced by youngsters were addressed in these two Zones with a programme that revolved around two passages from Bahá'í texts - that 'man is a mine rich in gems of inestimable value' and that all children are 'potentially the light of the world and at the same time its darkness.' In brief, the programme aimed at empowering individuals to transcend their disaffection with spiritual understandings. The programme was welcomed by 27 schools in Swindon, primary and secondary, with their most disaffected youngers identified as needing a novel intervention. A cohort of teachers and learning mentors were trained to deliver the programme. Viv Bartlett's book, Nurturing a Healthy Human Spirit in the Young, outlines this experience. Born in Cardiff, Viv Bartlett began searching for answers to life's problems after a tragedy struck, when his 14-year-old younger brother accidently electrocuted himself. Finding answers in religion he became a member of the Bahá'i Faith in 1966. After serving an engineering apprenticeship in ‘Tiger Bay' Cardiff, he later travelled the world as an engineer in the merchant navy. Returning home, he married (Rita Bridge) in 1970 and gained a B. Ed Honours degree in Education as a mature student. He then taught in secondary education in S Wales. Viv Bartlett, whilst pioneering in S Wales, served on several national Bahá'i committees until 1976, when he was appointed an Auxiliary Board Member in the UK serving for over 20 years with a special interest in the empowerment of young people. Since then, he has served on the Bahá'i Training Institute for Wales and then on the first elected Bahá'i Council for Wales. He was a Bahá'i representative on the first Interfaith Council for Wales established in 2003 serving until recently. He is a founder member of the Swindon Young People's Empowerment Programme (SYEP), a programme inspired by Bahá'í Teachings to help vulnerable, disaffected young people. A total of 27 primary and secondary schools have employed this programme. Viv has authored three books, with a fourth in process. His beloved wife, Rita, died of cancer 7 years ago, prior to which they parented three children and were foster carers.
