POPULARITY
Esquire Magazine was recently awarded a Pulitzer Prize for a factually bereft, emotionally driven editorial about the life and death of Bubba Copeland in which "right wing media" was blamed for his death. That "right wing media" of course was 1819 News. The Esquire article failed to tell the full story or any of the details of Copeland's sexually deviant extracurricular activities. In October of 2023, a trusted source told 1819 News that the Pastor of First Baptist Church of Phenix City, who was also the Mayor of Smith Station, Ala., was leading a double life as an online trans pornstar. A very bizarre lead, indeed, but things turned out to be far worse. Copeland wasn't just dressing up in his wife's clothes and taking pictures, he was a public figure posting homoerotic slasher fiction on public social media pages under an alter ego. He was creating memes encouraging children to transition their gender using pictures from children in the community. 1819 News published several articles exposing these things and it soon became a national story. The Lee County Sheriff's Office went to do a wellness check on Copeland, and as they turned their lights on to pull him over, he sped off, getting into a chase with law enforcement. When the chase ended, Copeland exited the car brandishing a pistol and pulled the trigger, ending his life. This was a tragic ending, but an ending that Copeland himself chose. Unfortunately, the national—and international—media blamed 1819 News, reporter Craig Monger, editor Jeff Poor, and CEO Bryan Dawson, all of whom were doxed by unhinged liberals posting their home addresses and family pictures online. The lunatics relentlessly attacked all 1819 News staff and their families, trying everything they could to cancel anyone associated with the organization. It didn't work; the fire only galvanized the team. 1819 News didn't lose a single donor or employee, and the adversity brought everyone together and made the organization stronger than ever. Upon Esquire posting the announcement of their Pulitzer Prize to Twitter/X, the post was immediately Community Noted with the following: "The article that was awarded a Pulitzer prize trivializes the fact that former mayor ‘Bubba' Copeland used photos of women and children to create transgender fetish content, and even wrote a sexual fantasy about murdering a woman in order to steal her identity." The comments section was even less forgiving. Esquire was "ratioed" as the kids say. Dawson brings on Craig Monger, the author of the original Bubba Copeland news stories that led to all this, to discuss the Pulitzer Prize and the details of the original reporting. They also discuss legislation that would have protected children from LGBTQ ideology in the classroom dying in the Senate and the overall obvious attempt by progressives to steal the hearts, minds, and souls of our children to fill their ranks and what we can do about it.
Tom Bevan, Carl Cannon and Sean Trende discuss news that NY Attorney General Letitia James is under criminal investigation and that Donald Trump pulled Ed Martin and replaced him with Judge Jeanine Pirro for DC prosecutor. They also talk about the blow up over Trump's nomination of Dr. Casey Means for Surgeon General and Bill Gates's declaration that he will be giving away all of his $200 billion fortune. Plus, they weigh in on Chuck Todd's pronouncement that the media was not to blame for covering up Biden's decline. The guys also pick their nominees for this week's "You Cannot Be Serious". Lastly, Carl interviews Anne Welty about a new Esquire Magazine profile of comedian Nate Bargatze - who went from relative obscurity to superstardom in the last few years.

In this interview, I'm joined by Derek Sivers. Derek is the Founder of CD Baby — a company he sold for $22 million, and then gave pretty much everything to charity. He has written multiple bestselling books, given TED talks which have reached millions, and been a circus performer for 10 years. There have been few people who have had a bigger positive impact on my thinking than Derek, so it was a real treat to sit down with him for an hour and have this conversation. Expect to learn: — The connection between your beliefs, your emotions, and your actions — How Derek sold his company for $22 million and then instantly gave it all away to charity — His unconventional approach to getting advice from mentors — Why Derek has journalled every day for the past 13 years and why this is the “single most useful thing” he does. And more. You can learn more about Derek's work, books, and philosophy at https://sive.rs. --- Derek Sivers graduated in 1990 from Berklee, where he majored in professional music. He entered as a guitarist and came out a self-proclaimed “everything guy” after studying voice, composition, piano, songwriting, music synthesis, and production. Sivers is best known as the founder of CD Baby(Opens in a new window), the largest online distribution company for independent music. After years of touring, recording, and writing for TV projects, he started CD Baby from his bedroom—almost by accident. When he obtained a merchant account to sell his CDs online (not an easy task in the '90s), musician friends began asking if he could sell their CDs. Soon he was getting calls from strangers, and the foundation for a business was laid. Sivers launched CD Baby in 1998 with a musician-centric ideology that sought to maximize musicians' profits rather than minimize them for company gain. In 2003, Sivers won the World Technology Award and was described by Esquire Magazine as “one of the last music-business folk heroes.” In keeping with his philanthropic ethos, Sivers sold CD Baby in 2008 and gave the proceeds to a charitable trust for music education. In 2011, Sivers published Anything You Want(Opens in a new window), a book chronicling his challenges and triumphs founding, building, and selling CD Baby. In 2013, Sivers launched Wood Egg(Opens in a new window), which publishes guides about how to build companies in Asia. He is a frequent speaker at the TED Conference, with over 5 million views of his talks. --- Interview Links: — Derek's website - https://sive.rs Interview Links: — Derek's website - https://sive.rs — Derek's new book - https://sive.rs/u — Derek's new book (Amazon Link) - https://amzn.to/41HkBPz

Have you been to the small hotel with a wishing well and now a fabulous new bar helmed by today's guest? I'm pretty certain that if Rogers and Hart had taken even one sip of any of the new cocktails, their famous song may have turned out very differently. If you are a Sinatra fan, you might be aware of his rendition of the song There's a Small Hotel written in the 1930s by Rogers and Hart for the musical On Your Toes. This sweet ditty was inspired by Hart's stay at the Stockton Inn in Stockton, New Jersey, a place also dear to my heart. My family has had a house nearby for the past 30 years. When new folks had acquired the inn, we held our breath. Then I discovered Brian Miller was in charge of the bar, and I knew there was nothing to fear! Brian is a veteran of the New York bar scene having worked in some of the most famous bars in the world like the Pegu Club and Death and Company. He has a special penchant for tropical cocktails, which culminated in the creation of Tiki Mondays with Miller - a Polynesian & pirate-themed pop-up bar. And his own bar, The Polynesian, which was nominated for Best New American Bar at Tales of the Cocktail and recognized by Esquire Magazine as one of America's Best Bars.So how did this self-described pirate find himself in that small hotel with the wishing well in the woods of New Jersey? Jonathan Buford is the CEO and founder of Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company. He grew up in Ohio and moved to Arizona in 2002, when he drove his rusted-out 1988 Chevy Nova out West to explore the vast Arizona landscapes. He launched his first business, a window cleaning company, out of his garage in 2006. In 2010, while backpacking through the Arizona wilderness, Jonathan was inspired to take his interest in craft brewing to the next level to start his own brewpub. He orchestrated a successful Kickstarter campaign to obtain the necessary capital and opened the Arizona Wilderness Brewpub in Gilbert, Arizona, in 2013 as the very first brewery in Gilbert. Starting with just nine employees, Arizona Wilderness found quick success, growing rapidly and securing rave reviews from the likes of Esquire Magazine, The Phoenix New Times, Phoenix Magazine, Draft, Beer Advocate, and Sunset. Arizona Wilderness was even named “The Best New Brewery in the World” in 2013 by Ratebeer.com. Today, Arizona Wilderness has more than 160 employees and operates the original Gilbert brewpub, a European-inspired beer garden in downtown Phoenix, and a warehouse production and barrel-aging facility. Arizona Wilderness continues to celebrate hand-crafted, artisanal beers that are inspired by the beautiful and diverse state of Arizona and is consistently rated the best brewery in Arizona and among the top 100 breweries worldwide (out of nearly 20,000 total breweries). Arizona Wilderness also receives regular acclaim for its food, including being recently named one of the top 100 restaurants in Phoenix by AZcentral.com. In addition to providing world-class food and drink, Jonathan and his business partner, Patrick Ware, use their passion for the wilderness to continually drive improvements in Arizona Wilderness' impact on its community. Jonathan and Patrick have driven initiatives to: (1) save huge amounts of water from the Verde River (more than 320 million gallons) by transitioning the brewery's base malt to Sinagua Malt (which replaces heavy water use crops such as corn and alfalfa with barley in the Verde River Valley); (2) drastically reduce landfill usage by utilizing recyclable and compostable materials wherever possible; and (3) support local farmers and vendors by consistently seeking out local partners for all menu items, including exclusively offering 100% Arizona grass-raised and finished beef at the beer garden. Jonathan is also pursuing a career in capturing Arizona landscape photography. He embarked on a project documenting all 90 Arizona Wilderness areas which will be published by Arizona Highways Magazine. He also frequently contributes to the magazine. In the future, Jonathan looks forward to continuing to grow Arizona Wilderness to ensure a tangible, long-term, positive effect on Arizona. ---------- Guiding Growth: Conversations with Community Leaders Join our hosts, Sarah Watts and Ben Kalkman, as we explore the human journey of leaders - their stories of humility, triumph, roadblocks, and lessons learned - as they reflect on how they became who they are today and share stories of inspiration and hope with listeners. Today we dive into the controversial and rapidly growing world of professional slap fighting. We discuss an Esquire Magazine article by Ander Monson, examining the brutal sport's appeal and the fascination with violence in American culture. Comparing it to other combat sports like MMA and NFL football, we debate the lack of skill involved, the inherent danger, and the psychological and societal implications of such violent entertainment. The conversation also touches on male machismo, the ethics of violent sports, and personal experiences with combat sports from the 1980s. Ultimately, we grapple with the question of whether promoting such savage spectacles is good for society. Larry says that at the Olson house, violence is A okay. 00:00 Introduction and Controversial Start 00:39 Reset and Headline Introduction 01:21 Inside the World of Slap Fighting 02:19 Comparing Slap Fighting to Other Sports 03:33 Debating the Morality of Slap Fighting 05:07 Explaining the Mechanics of Slap Fighting 07:38 Personal Reflections and Arguments 12:14 Conclusion and Final Thoughts Inside the Savage, Surreal, Booming World of Professional Slap Fighting smarticlepodcast@gmail.com #lonelyyoungmen #combatsports #mma #slapfighting #bloodsports #podcast #smarticle @Smarticleshow @BDDoble @larryolson threads.net/@smarticleshow @brand.dobes The Smarticle Podcast https://www.smarticlepodcast.com/

Feud: Capote vs The Swans follows the downfall of arguably the most famous American mid-century writer, Truman Capote. His best seller In Cold Blood catapulted him to stardom, and with his natural magnetism and inclination for spectacle catapulted him into the closest inner circles of New York City's elite, where he befriended a number of very powerful society women, who he referred to as his Swans. However, everything changed for Capote after he published a scathing excerpt about his friends in Esquire Magazine – which got him exiled from high society and sent him spiraling. While these women were very much real, how much does Feud rely on facts and where does the show, and Capote, bend the truth for dramatic effect? Let's take a look at how the show has portrayed the Swans so far in the first half of the season compared to their real stories to figure out how much fact is woven into the show's fiction. In this episode, Adam and Budi conclude their 2023 Book Club series with a deep dive into 'The Art of Gathering' by Priya Parker. We look at the transformative impact this text had on Adam's professional journey. Serendipitously, we were able to record this episode on the day of Budi's PhD Seminar which allowed us to reflect on the power of intentional gatherings and the subsequent impact of shared experiences.Priya Parker's bold approach to gatherings redefines the ways people connect, learn, and develop relationships. The acclaimed author of The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why it Matters, executive producer and host of the New York Times podcast, Together Apart, and the founder of boutique advisory firm Thrive Labs, she helps activists, elected officials, corporate executives, educators, and philanthropists create transformative, unforgettable gatherings that allow them to step back from their daily routine, rediscover their motivations, and develop strategies for innovation. In The Art of Gathering, Parker combines fascinating case studies culled from an international cast of characters with practices to follow—and rules to break— to connect more meaningfully with friends, colleagues, and strangers. She includes examples from her attempts to create connections, illustrating which tactics worked and which ones failed. Included among her success stories are “#IamHere Days,” self-organized adventures in which a group of people unplugs and explores a neighborhood, and “15 Toasts,” dinner parties where each guest has to toast to a common theme (the twist: the last one has to sing their toast). Parker's interactive talks are both a demonstration of the techniques described in her books and a guide on how to implement her strategies.Parker has helped numerous clients develop better in-person and virtual gatherings, including the Museum of Modern Art, LVMH, the World Economic Forum, meetup.com, and Civitas Public Affairs. Trained in conflict resolution, she has worked on peace processes in the Arab world, Southern Africa, and India, and is a founding member of the Sustained Dialogue Campus Network, where she worked on race relations on American college campuses. She has been appointed as a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Values and the New Models of Leadership Council, and is also a senior expert at Mobius Executive Leadership.Parker's The Art of Gathering: How We Meet and Why It Matters has been named a Best Business Book of the year by Amazon, Esquire Magazine, NPR, the Financial Times, 1-800-CEO-READS and Bloomberg. She has spoken on the TED Main Stage, and her TEDx talk on purpose has been viewed over one million times. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Forbes.com, Oprah.com, Real Simple Magazine, Glamour, The Today Show, and Support the showPlease help us send BRIGHT LIGHT BURNING to COP28 in Dubai. Episode 157. For our final episode recorded live at this year's American Craft Sake Festival, we are happy to bring you another U.S. sake brewer interview. This time, we visit with our pal Byron Stithem, owner and brewer at Nashville's Proper Sake Co., and the owner at Rice Vice, the attached sake bar and restaurant. Byron has lots to celebrate… as he sat down with us, he had just stepped off the stage after receiving the Silver Medal Audience Choice Award at the American Craft Sake Festival for the second year in a row. This comes on the heels of Rice Vice being named one of the 2023 Best Bars in America by Esquire Magazine. When it comes to our tasting, we were lucky enough to sip on “The Diplomat”, Proper Sake's flagship sake. By tasting this sake with Byron, we happily sailed way to “Yamahai Island”, where flavor, aroma and umami are hard earned, but absolutely delicious. What is that Yamahai aroma all about? Well – you'll know it when you smell it! Kanpai, and congratulations Byron! Special thanks to SBANA, the Sake Brewers Association of North America, for organizing the festival and to North American Sake Brewery for hosting the event location. #SakeRevolutionSupport the show
"Tenet is a film about many things, from entropy to time travel, Armageddon to environmentalism. But it's also a film about Robert Pattinson wearing a succession of truly astonishing suits. For that, we thank Jeffrey Kurland. The storied costume designer had previously worked with Nolan on Inception – where he proved his tailoring chops – and Dunkirk, but Tenetposed a very specific set of challenges. The first one being just figuring out what the hell was actually going on. "I read the script at least six times before I even sat down to talk with Chris," Kurland tells me, over the phone, from LA. "That's how you do any Chris Nolan film. The script is there, and it's totally wonderful. And then it's usually up from there. It's always a wild ride." - Tom Banham, Esquire Magazine, September 22nd, 2020 Jeffrey Kurland began his career in costume design in New York City. After graduating from Northwestern University with a B.A. in design, he moved to the east coast to design for the theatre. Jeffrey soon segued into designing costumes for film when he began designing the stylish films of director Woody Allen. Jeffrey has the unique distinction of being the costume designer of 15 films for Woody Allen, from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s. He has since realized the visual story for over 40 films, collaborating with such renowned directors as Milos Forman, Neil Jordan, Steven Soderbergh, Michael Mann, and Christopher Nolan. During his career, Jeffrey has dressed a host of leading actors. He has created designs for leading men such as George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Jamie Foxx, Robert Downey, Jr., Michael Caine, Viggo Mortensen and Leonardo DiCaprio. He has also designed for leading ladies Julia Roberts, Marion Cotillard, Cameron Diaz, Annette Bening, Diane Keaton, Gena Rowlands and Ellen Page. He received a BAFTA Award, Britain's highest film honor, for his designs for Radio Days and an Academy Award nomination for his work on Bullets Over Broadway. Jeffrey was awarded the Costume Designers Guild award for his designs for the film Erin Brockovich and received a nomination for his work on Ocean's 11. His work has also been recognized through being honored with The Hamilton Timeless Style Award. Jeffrey Kurland sits on the board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He co-curated the exhibit 50 Designers/50 Costumes: Concept to Character for the Academy, and his designs have also been featured in several exhibits around the world. He has spoken on the art of costume design in numerous symposia at the Directors Guild of America, the American Film Institute, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and UCLA, where he has also taught. Jeffrey's work is featured in the publications Screencraft: Costume Design, 50 Designers/50 Costumes: Concept to Character and Dressed: A Century of Hollywood Costume Design.
After watching the latest Mission Impossible movie, Cal remembers an interview he did with Tom for Esquire Magazine. A snippet from that interview was turned into a video, and it's played on this week's episode. You get a glimpse of Tom's difficult childhood, and see how the solutions he found were seeds to take control of his career and live out the passions of his youth. There's a lesson in this for all of us. Enjoy.

“On paper, it sounded like a great idea: let's recreate Woodstock to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the peace and love music festival that sat at the epicentre of the hippie movement. Groovy. What followed was four days of carnage." Esquire Magazine.
