'Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story' chronicles the highs and lows of an extraordinary career in show business. Filmmaker Brian David Klein captures multiple perspectives on Liza Minelli from longtime friends including Michael Feinstein, Mia Farrow and Ben Vereen.
This is the semi-autobiographical musical story of Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider), a legendary choreographer/director struggling with various addictions as he juggles developing a new stage musical and editing a film he has directed. And it was directed by legendary choreographer/director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Lenny) who at the time was dealing with many of the struggles when he wasn't winning multiple Tony Awards and Oscars. It was a true passion project which also attracted a passionate response as it did well at the box office, received mass acclaim, and was also nominated for multiple Oscars including for Best Picture. Scheider was also nominated for Best Actor that year, leading a very talented cast including Ann Reinking, Leland Palmer, Cliff Gorman, Ben Vereen, and Jessica Lange. Jam-packed with several sequences which can be described as sad, sexy, sordid, and joyous, it was quite the original cinematic experience....IT'S SHOWTIME FOLKS!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

This week we are talking about a short-live crime/P.I. show called Tenspeed and Brown Show. It starred Jeff Goldlum (yes, him) and Ben Vereen as a young stock broker and a con-man, in that order. They are brought together after Tenspeed (Vereen) steals some money out of a bank that was put there by a mobster who stole it from a Nazi. It is a bit confusing. Check it out!
My crush on William Katt began decades ago with the tumbling blonde spirals of Tommy Ross in Carrie, the close-cropped Sundance, to the shorter golden curls of Pippin… it wasn't just the hair, of course… that face, the smile, his voice… the whole damn package. Like millions of other baby boomers, he had us swooning for years. How lovely to sit down with Bill, these almost 50 years later, to discover he's still got that boyhood charm, mischievous sense of fun, with just a teeny touch of bad boy (note him playfully admonishing his wife when she sneaks into the “set.” And, the au courant platinum do, and facial hair he's currently sporting still make him a handsome standout. That's the trivial superficialities - but, what do you expect when you're talking about a movie star heartthrob? Well, there is the laid-back, easy-going, real as-beans, straight-shooter, who was crazy fun to chat with and get his inside perspective on his parents, actors, Bill Williams (Kit Carson) and Barbara Hale - loved to learn that she was also funny- Betty White funny, and inspired at least one woman to great professional heights, on Angie Dickenson, his first TV co-star, his passion for theatre, always, working with Bob Fosse, and Ben Vereen, Auditioning for George Lucas, to play Luke Skywalker with Kurt Russell as Hans Solo - doing a great job, instead being cast by Brian DePalma in his seminal work, Carrie, alongside his friend, and perhaps for a brief moment something more, Amy Irving, visited on the set by Steven Spielberg, perhaps where that all began, alongside beloved Nancy Allen (who is responsible for connecting me with Bill, making this conversation possible), John Travolta, Betty Buckley, Piper Laurie, Cissy Spacek-some great stories there, we talked about The Greatest American Hero, and the risk back then of going from film to TV, working with Robert Culp, and Connie Selleca, House, and George Wendt, great Sci-Fi with The Man From Earth, why he no longer does theatre, does only good films for friends, like last years' Pursuit with John Cusack and an upcoming film with Alfred Molina. We talked about music throughout his life, bands in high school, playing clubs later on, a pop hit, lots of musical theatre culminating with Pippin and Fosse, and a musical about and working with, Randy Newman, which his love for came out his pores when describing, to his current passion Jazz project. William Katt is a Renaissance man. We already know he looks great in tights. What FUN!!!! Do you believe that angels surround you? Do you think you are guided or are you filled with self-doubt? Lisa continues the conversation today with best-selling author Keith Leon S. who absolutely knows his angels are always with him. He asked for assistance as a child and heard the voice of his Guardian Angel. They have been with him ever since and Keith believes we can all ask them for their guidance and wisdom. He talks about reincarnation and what he has learned. He also discusses the non-linear nature of reality and how we can direct things in this reality. The choices we make now dictate our future. We can make them in alignment with the outcome we want. Keith talks about a specific “knowing” and how he manifests. He discusses the power of belief and how it's possible to cancel out our own prayers with our wavering. If we take in the mainstream media and listen to negative news, for example, we can be deeply affected. He reminds us that we can choose to only receive things in alignment with how we want to be. We can look at role models and the choices they make. He talks about his involvement with Agape Spiritual Center and his relationship with Reverend Michael Beckwith. He became a practitioner there, as well as a soloist in their music program, including performing on stage with Stevie Wonder and Ben Vereen. Keith shares a personal story in which Ben Vereen was singing and afterward talked about his admiration for him. Since that moment, he realized that he was no longer nervous to sing and perform for an audience. Keith also discusses Ernest Holmes and the teachings of the Church of Religious Science, as well as other great spiritual teachers. He explains how they are all saying the same thing, only using different words. He further shares messages from his Angels and their words for humanity's future. He talks about how everything is for the “highest good,” even if it doesn't seem that way. We must turn off the noise and rely on our inner knowing. He suggests going into a place of stillness and asking a single question. The quality of our questions determines our answers. Keep asking that question over and over, until you receive the answer. He also suggests writing positive affirmations and repeating mantras 100 times a day for 33 days to reprogram our subconscious minds. That way, we can become aligned and find an energetic match to what we desire. Keith is a multiple best-selling author, international speaker, and owner of a successful book publishing company. His books include, “Walking with My Angels,” “Who Do You Think You Are? Discover the Purpose of Your Life,” and “The Seven Steps to Successful Relationships,” co-authored with his wife, Maura. He also talks about his most recent book and film, “The Inside Effects: How the Body Heals Itself,” which is available to watch for Free. This is Part 2 of the interview. The final episode of Backstage Babble in 2023 is a doozy! I'm lucky to talk to many legends, but sometimes they don't have time for a full conversation. That being said, the two Tony-winning actors who I'm presenting “mini” interviews with today had such valuable thoughts and stories that I wanted to share them publicly. First, Tyne Daly, who it was announced after the interview is returning to Broadway in Spring 2024 with Doubt, talks about her legendary career, with stories including how an appearance with Dolly Parton got her the role of Mama Rose, the valuable lesson about auditioning she learned at the Mark Taper Forum, why she turns down all horror movies, and so much more. Then, an inspiring conversation with Ben Vereen where he discusses the genius of Galt MacDermot and Bob Fosse, how Vinnette Carroll discovered him, why theater and spirituality are deeply intertwined, and so much more! You won't want to miss these two conversations.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with David Fantle & Tom Johnson, Authors, “C'mon, Get Happy: The Making of Summer Stock” About Harvey's guest: Today's guests, David Fantle & Tom Johnson, are co-authors who last appeared on our show to discuss their landmark book entitled, “Hollywood Heyday: 75 Candid Interviews with Golden Age Legends”. The interviews contained in that book were conducted when our guests were mere teenagers living in Minnesota, visiting Hollywood in the hopes of meeting movie stars. And boy, did they ever! Since then, our guests have gone on to have distinguished careers. David Fantle has been interviewing, writing, and speaking about Hollywood's Golden Age stars for 45 years, and he's an adjunct professor of film at Marquette University. Tom Johnson is a former senior editor at Netflix, and he's written movie reviews and features for many publications including E! Online, Movie-phone, and People magazine. His writing has been recognized with a Minnesota Newspaper Association achievement award and a National Hearst Foundation award. They're here today to discuss their brand new book entitled, “C'mon, Get Happy: The Making of Summer Stock”. This well-researched and illuminating book chronicles how Judy Garland's last MGM movie, and her 3rd and final film with co-star Gene Kelly, was conceived, cast and filmed, despite the troubled atmosphere of drama and heartache, and the sometimes overwhelming obstacles and challenges surrounding the production. The book is jam-packed with little-known and newly uncovered details about the people in front of and behind the cameras, and it examines the enduring legacy of the movie, including some fascinating insights provided by Judy Garland's daughter Lorna Luft, Gene Kelly's daughter Kerry Kelly Novick, and other celebrities including Savion Glover, Ben Vereen, Tommy Tune and Michael Finestine. Roots 1977- Shot of espresso is freshly downed, cracks knuckles, let's go. Today your decade under the influence crew takes on the mini series Roots, which came into our living rooms for 8 nights starting on jan 23 1977. I remember watching at least some of this with my parents and four sisters at the young age of 6, so I think it was probably mandatory family viewing, in mine and in most cool family homes. It is a lil interesting to think how everyone read about this in their TV guides or in the newspapers, and adjusted their schedules to make eight nights of this, and get the complete story. I'm sure they talked about on the tv too, but this was of course before video stores or streaming so you really had to make n effort to plop down and absorb all that was put into bringing Alex Haley's huge best selling story of his family history of surviving the slave trade. A massively important thing for America to look at and talk about, so I'm very glad it was taken so seriously by all involved. So much acting talent in here, and of course it all starts with chief engineer Geordie La Forge. This is LeVar Burton's first acting gig right outta college, way before he got us all pumped about reading, or flew starships, he left such an impression in his portrayal of Kunte Kinte, that we all forget he is only in the first 2 episodes. Also starring in Roots we have Mary Tyler Moore's boss Lou Grant as the reluctant slave boat owner. Ed Asner if were gettin technical. We have the mean baseball coach from bad news bears who died on the set of the movie the twilight zone, the guy from the rifleman, the guy from midnight express, the rad guy from iron eagle, the amazing Madge Sinclair, Olivia Cole, the kick ass Ben Vereen as chicken George (Fosse hands), and Commander Adama himself, to name just a few. Shit, don't forget John Amos as older Kunta, also Mr. flipping Brady plays a real asshole in this. Many of these amazing actors lend their talents to play some of the worst people on the planet. It really is a magnificent mini series with amazing music by Quincy Jones in the first episode, annnnnnnnnnnnnnd then the music does take a bit of a dive. There a few things that do remind us that this is a 70's made for TV movie. As progressive and amazing it is, and the fact that they got it made and had amerika look it's past right in the eye, and get a black eye back when they weren't even teaching our racist true beginnings in the history books at school yet. It is still not 100 percent free of issues. One such thing is the recap narrator talking about the triumph of the American spirit n shit, but don't worry cause we talk all about it, and seriously folks, as much as it is not, we would like this to be a conversion that continues, so. Thank you for listening, and if you like or don't like what you hear, or if we missed something cool, or whatever, please write on the socials and let us know.
There was a lot of magic to do 50 years ago as Pippin faced off against A Little Night Music. Join us--as we look at all the nominees and winners, including Ben Vereen, Debbie Reynolds, Robert Morse, and more.
Neither of us was looking forward to watching this. We saw the stills of Roy Scheider in his sparkly shirt and said "this looks terrible, I don't like musicals". But, you know what? This movie is super rad and isn't really a musical and that godawful shirt doesn't come in to play until the end. Tune in and listen to us talk about how ridiculously cool Roy Scheider is in this and how it's basically a biopic that a guy wrote and directed about himself (the legendary Bob Fosse) and running himself into the ground popping amphetamines and liquor while sleeping a few hours of night and simultaneously crafting a horny musical about an airline and editing a stand up special by a fake Lenny Bruce. It's showtime, folks, and Keith Gordon needs you to watch him do a little dance in his third feature film. Follow us on the Facebook, dance with us on the reddits, kiss us on the instagrams, watch the word burn on youtube, and step on my neck on twitter. Call us on the hotline and talk Ben Vereen or send us pictures of your thumbs through Gmail. Karole Selmon's "Code of Honor" in Life and Acting The first season of Star Trek TNG episode "Code of Honor" is an infamous one within the fandom, reviled by fans and the actors in it alike. Karole Selmon played Yareena in that episode and, for the first time, shared her thoughts on it and the reputation it holds. Karole gives us the whole story, starting from her audition, tension on the set with some crew, the kindness of Patrick Stewart, memories of Gene Roddenberry, working with Jessie Ferguson and Julian Christopher, her fight scene with Denise Crosby with an accident on set that few know about, and her perspective on why this isn't the worst Star Trek episode of all time, including a few reasons most people rarely think about when discussing this one. She also has another surprising Star Trek experience that very few know about that she shared with Trek Untold. Karole tells us about her experiences performing on stage around the US and the globe, including a communist country, the trauma in her life that led her to the stage, what she learned from her first movie role in "Mother, Jugs, and Speed," and working with Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby and James Earl Jones in "A Piece of the Action." "Everybody Dance" is a new documentary about Bonnie Schlachte's Ballet For All Kids dance studio in California. As the name says, the studio teaches dance to all kids: all ages, all abilities - and disabilities including those with special needs whether physical(like cerebral palsy) or those on the autism spectrum or developmentally delayed. After a career that began as a dancer and choreographer, Dan - who's openly gay - went on to work with stars like Bea Arthur, Ben Vereen, Carol Channing, and Simon Cowell, as well as working at Colombia Pictures in film development for a long time. But a few years ago, he made the decision to tell the stories that HE wanted to tell - with a focus on exploring the human experience, humanity, and social issues. In choosing a subject for his debut effort as a director and producer, Dan reflected on his fascination with people who study the arts but don't make it their profession. He used to ask people questions like, “How did your piano lessons help you in your everyday life or career”? "Everybody Dance" not only explores the lives of several of the dance students at Ballet For All Kids along with their families, but the film chronicles the weeks before the dance studio's all-important annual dance recital. That's right - these special needs kids dance onstage right next to their classmates who Miss Bonnie describes as “typical” kids. "Everybody Dance" is available now on AppleTV, iTunes, Amazon Prime and Google Play.

“Being a multi-hyphenate is not a disability – it's an ability. It's an advantage.” Jared Grimes is a Tony Nominated actor currently starring in Funny Girl on Broadway. His effervescent energy lights up the stage every night at The August Wilson Theatre. In this episode, his energy continues into our conversation as we discuss what being a “bag of tricks” in this industry actually means. In this episode, we discover Grimes' road to Broadway, how he turned his ADD diagnosis into multi-hyphenation, inspirations, getting people in power to understand the multi-hyphenate, and we chat about how tap opened up his eyes to the art of multi-hyphenating. “At an early age I began to latch on to the idea that if you're a tap dancer, that means you can be many things. It doesn't mean that you just use your feet to connect with people or share with people. I'm looking at all my heroes and they are singing, they are acting, they are comedians, they're lindyhoppers, they're writers, they're choreographers, they do camerawork – they are behind the camera, in front of the camera – all those guys did that and I was just like wow so that's what it is to be a tap dancer. My earliest idea of what a tap dancer was, was a multi-hyphenate.” Jared Grimes is a quadruple threat in the world of the arts where he is heavily making his mark in singing, dancing, acting, and choreographing. He received a Tony Nomination for his performance in Funny Girl on Broadway, which he is currently starring in. On numerous occasions, he has danced alongside legends such as Wynton Marsalis, Gregory Hines, Ben Vereen, Jerry Lewis and Fayard Nicholas. and also performed for Barack Obama and Ted Kennedy at the Kennedy Center.
