The Unique Journey of Black Fathers Raising Autistic Kids with Nick Richardson Part 2

So, let's talk about the story and experience Black fathers go through in raising autism-diagnosed kids… While autism discussions and advocacy are slowly coming to the forefront, unfortunately, not enough attention is given to the experiences of fathers – especially Black fathers – just yet. That's why we're back with another episode from this two-part series with Nick Richardson, an author, a loving husband, and a Black father to a son who has a dual diagnosis of autism and ADHD. Going through the experience of having to unlearn and relearn everything for his son's development, he believes in the power and importance of having support groups and/or communities. Regardless of whether you're a father who just got your kid's diagnosis or a spouse trying to understand what your husband is thinking, this two-part series will try to serve as a helping hand in this time of need. In this episode, Nick emphasizes the importance of creating a household full of love as he stresses how crucial it is that as parents, we also find people we trust to rely on so we can find balance and take a break. Because as beautiful and loving as it is that our love drives us to work for the betterment of our kids, we also need to recharge and take a breath. Why you need to check this episode: Understand the importance of parents having a trusted community to rely on for taking a break; Recognize the significance of creating and having a positive and loving household, regardless of whether your kids are atypical, neurotypical, or neurodivergent; and Learn how to find balance in life as a parent, especially if you have a child on the spectrum. “I believe all households should be full of love. Every household is different, but when you're definitely talking about having a child on the spectrum, creating the most positive atmosphere you can will help better your child in the development with this diagnosis.” – Nick Richardson Notable Quotes: “What I'm realizing is I know when I surround my son with the things he prefers, he has a better opportunity not only to learn academically but learn socially when there are positive environments around him.” – Nick Richardson “It all depends on what your priorities are. That's how you find out what you can handle and what gets done and what doesn't get done.” – Nick Richardson Mentions: (Part 1) The Unique Journey of Black Fathers Raising Autistic Kids with Nick Richardson AutisHim Breaking Barriers: An Introductory Look at African American Fathers and Autism Advocacy Connect with Nick Richardson: Facebook YouTube Sign up at www.listentodrberry.com  to join the mailing list. So, let's talk about the story and experience Black fathers go through in raising autism-diagnosed kids… Nick Richardson is an author, a loving husband, and a Black father to a son who has a dual diagnosis of autism and ADHD. Going through the experience of having to unlearn and relearn everything for the development of his son, he believes in the power and importance of having support groups and/or communities. Just like what he said in this episode, more often than not, people – especially men – tend to forget that while they're going through the struggles, there are other people – or men – going through the same, too. Not to mention the lack of support for our brothers out there as well. But while it is unfortunate that the stories of fathers – especially Black men – aren't being talked about enough these days, we cannot let our voices be silenced, for like our autistic loved ones, we also need all the support that we can receive. And that's one of the reasons why he's here today – to send the message out there that this is happening and there are people whose story mirrors yours as well, and that we can be of help to one another as we journey this life and experience of having autistic kids. So, join us, and let's talk about our story, because who knows? As Nick says, it can edify, help, or move somebody, and even teach people about autism and fatherhood as a parent whose child has special needs. Why you need to check this episode: Discover the story of Black fathers who have a child on the spectrum (with special needs); Recognize the impact and importance of having a community or support group, especially within the African-American population; and Find out the internal letdowns usually experienced by fathers whose family member/s got diagnosed, and understand how and why fathers also need support “I believe African-Americans are communal people. I think we need each other in order for our children to grow and develop to be the most productive citizens possible.” – Nick Richardson Notable Quotes: “Everything that you knew about raising a child, nine times out of 10, came from you being that child being raised [by] your parents or grandparents or people who have poured into you. [But] none of that now matters. For the most part, you can't do and raise your child in the manner that you were raised. So, what you think you know, you now have to unlearn, and relearn what is necessary for your child's development.” – Nick Richardson “When you're going through all of this, the one thing you do not realize is that there are other men going through it, too.” – Nick Richardson “It's not just that brothers need brothers to understand that, but talking to other brothers helps you reflect on yourself. It kind of gives you a different perspective on what you can possibly do. In our support group, we don't tell anybody how to do anything. We give our stories, we give our experiences, we give the things that we've tried, and if it works for you, take it; if it doesn't work, see if another brother has a different experience that you can use to help you in your situation.” – Nick Richardson “We do a lot of sacrificing for our family because we care about them. We want our children to be the best versions of themselves as possible.” – Nick Richardson “The negative energy that I was giving, my son was just taking it and giving it back; it wasn't helping him. So, I could not discipline him the way I was disciplined. I had to find another way, which is where some of these trainings are coming in and talking to ABA therapists.” – Nick Richardson Mentions: My Autism In Black Conference Recap AutisHim DSM-5 Autism in Black Sign up at www.listentodrberry.com  to join the mailing list. Well, we have the goods on how high school musicals actually come to be, as we interviewed Nick Richardson, who has put on several. We also discuss his recent job change out of the classroom, and what drove him, and scores of other teachers, to leave teaching (aside from the existential dread that many feel as the sun rises over their classrooms). The Vermont Land Trust, founded in 1977, is one of the oldest and largest land conservation groups in the country. It has helped protect more than 620,000 acres in Vermont, comprising about 11% of the state. The land trust began with a simple goal of conserving land and supporting farmers. But with heightened awareness about equity and racial justice today, things are not so simple.Who can claim the right to land that was stolen from Indigenous people? How has racism shaped who owns land? How can land conservation help combat climate change?Last year, the Vermont Land Trust received a $6 million grant from the Vermont Community Foundation and High Meadows Fund to diversify farm ownership and address climate solutions, of which $2 million is “to expand land ownership and access among people who have been historically marginalized or oppressed based on their race or ethnicity.”This grant, the largest of its kind in Vermont, raises challenging questions, concedes Nick Richardson, president and CEO of the land trust since 2017.“When a white-led organization like ours is the recipient from a white-led foundation of funding that's meant to be directed towards BIPOC land sovereignty work, that's the indication of a problem,” he said, referring to Vermonters who are Black, Indigenous and people of color. “It shows how far we have to go as a state in terms of meeting our goals and … commitments that we should all make around BIPOC racial equity and justice. And that's really uncomfortable and hard work. And we're really committed to it.”

Researchers have unearthed gender disparities in arrest statistics in cases of interpersonal violence; however, there is little data on the role race and sexuality play in these cases. For example, putting your own issues to the side while dealing with players/athletes/clients. We also touch on how this factor impacts Nick's mental wellbeing and how important it is to be mentally resilient. Nick shares his experiences of departing certain sporting organisations, and how common it is within the industry. It's going to happen at some stage, whether it's a change in coaching staff or running out of a contract, Nick discusses how he bounced back and excelled going forwards. Nick and I also touch on the topic of being lonely. I'm sure Nick it not the only one, but he enjoys working alone as he can be productive and not be distracted. However, he loves being part of a team and all the social benefits that arise from that type of community. The banter with players, the travel to away games, the late-night stories, etc. To be in his role, Nick has had to make many sacrifices, in which he shares how lucky he is to have such a supportive family. He talks about how coaches need to make sacrifices in order to make it in the bigger leagues. This touches on the work/life pendulum which has come up in previous episodes on the podcast, and how true balance is never achieved. Focus with work remains at work, and focus with family is when you're at home. Coaches not only need to make sacrifices, but they need to be selfless. They need to put others before themselves. That is what coaching is all about. Nick and I discuss how these sacrifices can come at a cost of sustaining wellness, and we investigate some specific tips and tricks that keeps him mentally well. https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-richardson-b0191586/

We hear the inside story on the recent significant discoveries, Total's Glendronach, Equinor's Verbier and CNOOC's Glengorm discoveries, which were welcome news, following a period of some of lowest levels of activity since the 1960s. Nick Richardson, Head of Exploration & New Ventures at the OGA said: "It's a very positive time for exploration, especially in the frontier West of Shetland region which is now a key area for growth. The OGA estimates there is 4 billion boe yet to be discovered from existing mapped prospects, with an additional 11 billion boe possible from new plays in the UKCS. Finding costs have gone from $9 to $1 per barrel, adding a further incentive to explore. The extensive opportunity-set, and improved industry performance, underlines the considerable potential of the UKCS with there being every chance of more significant finds.” Since the OGA was established, it has placed a strong focus on exploration; the 'lifeblood' of the basin. This includes: commissioning new government-funded seismic surveys to acquire new geophysical data; overhauling the licensing regime to make it more flexible with lower entry barriers; establishing annual licensing rounds focusing alternately on mature and frontier areas; and making high quality seismic, digital well logs, geological mapping, reports and lessons-learned information openly available to all. The OGA recently launched the new National Data Repository, which has for the first-time opened-up the UKCS's released subsurface data to the public. It's Christmas Eve! And what a better way to spend it then listening in on Kevin, Sully and Kenna play a few games. Not your average reindeer games however. This is moreso a fan submitted questions and answer by Kenna and then they played some 'Have You Ever' Naughty or Nice. Kevin starts things off wondering if Christmas Eve is actually a holiday. Other than New Year's Eve, it's the only 'eve' before a major holiday labeled on a calendar. They jointly decided it's a holiday, only because it's on the calendar. Kevin asks them what their plans are for Christmas. Kenna says she's headed to the mid west to be with family, Sully is working so he's doing Christmas on Christmas Eve, and Kevin is working Christmas Eve, so they'll be doing a later celebration on Christmas Day. Kenna begins answering questions that were submitted by fans. Kevin put out a post on social media to enable Kenna's fans to ask her questions. And that they did. Kevin whittled the questions down to a bunch, but he said a lot were duplicates. We won't list all of the questions here, however, I'm sure you can get an idea of where those questions headed. I mean, they were asking a porn star after all. After Kenna answered her lot of questions, Kevin brought up playing Naughty or Nice.
