So, let's talk about the story and experience Black fathers go through in raising autism-diagnosed kids… Nick Richardson is an author, a loving husband, and a Black father to a son who has a dual diagnosis of autism and ADHD. Going through the experience of having to unlearn and relearn everything for the development of his son, he believes in the power and importance of having support groups and/or communities. Just like what he said in this episode, more often than not, people – especially men – tend to forget that while they're going through the struggles, there are other people – or men – going through the same, too. Not to mention the lack of support for our brothers out there as well. But while it is unfortunate that the stories of fathers – especially Black men – aren't being talked about enough these days, we cannot let our voices be silenced, for like our autistic loved ones, we also need all the support that we can receive. And that's one of the reasons why he's here today – to send the message out there that this is happening and there are people whose story mirrors yours as well, and that we can be of help to one another as we journey this life and experience of having autistic kids. So, join us, and let's talk about our story, because who knows? As Nick says, it can edify, help, or move somebody, and even teach people about autism and fatherhood as a parent whose child has special needs. Here's Chet Gardiner's brilliant remix of a song I recorded in 2002 based on a story I read in the Palestine Chronicle back then, called "In One World."

From the vantage point of artistic output, as 2023 progresses I've been facing the only problem I ever like to have — writing more decent songs in the course of the year than I could possibly pack into one album project. I already had plans to spend much of February in southern France making a recording with a fine international cast of musicians. I was starting to think about completely changing the plan for the recording project and making it all about the genocide in Gaza. But I was feeling bad about abandoning the idea of recording a lot of other material if we went that route. Then it occurred to me that instead of radically altering the project we already had planned, the Gaza song cycle could be its own separate recording project. When the brilliant Hawai'i-based musician, Chet Gardiner, had me and other musicians there to record the Killing the Messenger album at the beginning of 2023, he mentioned the notion of working remotely with material I send him, that I record in my apartment. I realized that this was the time to do that sort of project together, and Chet's response was “I'm glad you asked.” He got to work quickly, improving vocal and guitar sounds and adding tastefully minimalist layers of bass and synth to his favorite song in the cycle thus far. What I'm sharing with you here is the first song he finished. He'll be serving us more morsels as December progresses. I hope you like it as much as I do (and the rest of them as much as I expect to!). When we've got the whole batch, I'll put them out as an album on all the music streaming platforms.

It's time for part two of our World That Never Was extravaganza! It's time for the big dramatic set piece at the middle of Kingdom Hearts 2, the Battle for Hollow Bastion! Final Fantasy characters are all over the place again this week, opening the door for some amazing memetic lines. But before we can get in on the action, an annoyingly long and even more annoyingly important extra scene added to Final Mix completely kills the pace. After that we beat Demyx, Goofy dies and revives in a matter of minutes, and the face of our big bad for this game, Xemnas, is finally revealed! Plus, you'll never GUESS who pulls a hero move!

This week, go over the postgame content of Kingdom Hearts II by going to Atlantica and 100 Acre Woods. The Little Mermaid's world has been reduced to a rhythm game, and we go back to see Winnie the Pooh, just to see he has forgotten our past adventure. We also go over the added Final Mix content as we see the Data Organization XIII fight and the extremely hard boss fight, Lingering Will. Then wrap everything up by looking at the Secret Ansem Reports and placing everything into the timeline.

In this episode, we get the Gummi piece from Cid to go back to Hollow Bastion, we go through The End of the World, and we BEAT THE GAME! It's our season finale! We'll be off for the next month, but before we take a little slumber in our memory recovery pods, we're back for one more episode to take another look at one of our favorite video game franchises that we simply cannot stop talking about: KINGDOM HEARTS.The beloved Final Fantasy / Disney crossover JRPG series has been back on our minds lately. It celebrated its 20th Anniversary earlier this month, alongside the reveal of the next mainline entry in the series: Kingdom Hearts IV. And just recently, the iconic singer of the KH theme songs Utada Hikaru performed some of their hits on the Coachella mainstage. We've covered KH on the pod before* so this week we're taking a deeper "dive to the heart" of the series viewed through a queer lens: from its use of queer-adjacent shonen anime tropes, to the trans/nonbinary-coded Nobodies, its mindbending ideas of reality and multiverses, and how the game's relationship to its not-so-queer-friendly corporate benefactor Disney has affected how we and others view these games. We also speculate on what we expect/want out of Kingdom Hearts 4, especially now living in an era of "multiverse media" that Kingdom Hearts laid the groundwork for 20 years ago.We hope you enjoy this last episode of our season! Deb Gowen is a Registered Nurse and Certified Nurse Midwife, who has extensive experience in working with women and men on working with their bodies instead of fighting them.  I speak from experience, as working with her has shifted my thoughts about the aging process, and have given me more confidence in what my body is capable of in my late forties (and beyond!).  This episode is really "the talk" that I wish all of us had gotten on our fortieth birthdays! Here are Deb's Ten Tips that she discusses in more detail on this episode: Stress has real consequences. Stress is not simply the result of your inadequacies,  your inability to cope or multitask, or any of the things you tell yourself to rationalize  why you cannot do it all. Stress makes changes in your health in a real way.  Small, positive changes that appear to be way too small or minor can actually  matter in health maintenance.   Find time to take 10 deep breaths as slowly as possible at least once a day. It takes  only 1-2 minutes and reorients your brain and neurotransmitters.   Five minutes of closed eyes and quiet breathing can be very beneficial. Set a phone  alarm so you don't have to worry about falling asleep or keeping track of time. Start  once daily, then work up to twice daily or 10 minutes daily. The often recommended goal is 20 minutes a day and is then called meditation. Skip the  labels or the right way to do it. Just start small and do 5 minutes.  Hormones are a bigger deal than just for menstrual cycles and pregnancy. Food quality matters. Try to have easy-to-grab, quality food around. For example,  cook a lot at once and make portions for the week.  Sleep matters. Use sleep hygiene methods, and if they don't work well enough,  look for other options, including hormone assessment for adequate progesterone  or for cortisol support. Movement matters. Stand up and dance to a tune every hour or so. Or walk for 10  minutes a couple times a day. Pick your movement. Everything is on the table.  70% of all people have at least one ACE (Adverse Childhood Event) or trauma,  which makes reactivity and resistance more active than resilience and solution seeking. Trauma is less about what it was or the perceived severity of the event,  and more about context and feelings of powerlessness at the time of the event.  Trauma keeps the adrenals overworking, resulting eventually in hormonal  imbalance and poor health.  Discrimination against women is real in all sectors, including health care. Racism  worsens it. Don't doubt yourself. If you have someone who is not listening to you or  is speaking down to you, get the care you can at the moment, then find someone  else. If you don't have the option of switching providers, don't be reluctant to bring  your sweetly-spoken but more assertive male of female friend to your next visit.
