A district court judge has denied the City of Chico's motion to exit a settlement agreement that outlines its policies on homelessness. Also, the Chico Police Department is required by the state to disclose its use and acquisition of military-grade equipment and held a meeting outlining its use earlier this week, and several North State cities are joining the national “Hands Off!” march and rally on Saturday.
There have been 15 confirmed or probable wolf attacks on livestock in the North State so far this year. An increasing wolf population is celebrated by advocates, but can cause problems for ranchers. Also, Butte County will find out at the board of supervisors meeting today details surrounding the success of Measure H — the one-cent sales tax voters recently passed in November, and a lawsuit filed by Shasta County against election activists was dropped.

The California State Association of Counties hosted a conference on Thursday to discuss disaster recovery, prevention and needs with several county representatives. Also, a new plan to address homelessness in the state stresses accountability at the local level, and Cal Fire is looking for input from the public regarding new fire severity zone maps.
Butte County supervisors will soon send a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom detailing unmet needs regarding wildfire recovery. The board also discussed sending another letter to President Donald Trump and Congressman Doug LaMalfa about concerns regarding how tariffs could impact exports in the county. Also, community leaders and policymakers met last week to discuss the future of water in California, and Friday is the deadline for approval of an act that would provide federal money to schools in many North State counties.
The Trump administration says it plans to fire 70,000 Veterans Affairs (VA) employees and that doesn't sit well with veterans who depend on the medical care the VA delivers. Also, the man guilty of burning down Bidwell Mansion in Chico appeared in court yesterday and was sentenced to 11 years in prison, and three cancer treatment centers in Redding are being consolidated into a central location. The Sierra Pacific Regional Cancer Center just broke ground, and plans to open in summer 2026.
With egg prices averaging more than $9 a dozen in California, North State residents might be turning to raising their own flocks. Also, a California advocacy group measures various factors that affect children's well-being, and Chico police attempted to arrest a wanted man over the weekend. He's now dead following an hours-long standoff and shootout.
Catalyst, a local non-profit serving survivors of domestic and sexual violence, says it hasn't been impacted by federal funding freezes yet. However, services could be at risk if the freezes go through. Also, students and faculty gathered to protest the attendance of Homeland Security Investigations during a career fair on Chico State's campus this week, and Butte County is deciding how Proposition H funds will be spent.
In the years since the COVID-19 pandemic, California public schools have been receiving less funding from the state. In Plumas County, a district says it will have to lay off staff to account for the shortfall. Also, storm runoff from the Park Fire burn scar is helping experts understand how wildfires affect the region's waterways, and a North State congressman is voicing his disapproval of a new national monument in California.
Police chiefs in the North State have different approaches to assisting with potential deportations. Also, homeowners impacted by the Dixie Fire can receive financial assistance from the California Department of Housing and Community Development, and many Chico residents feel unsafe walking at night due to a lack of street lamps, but some advocates say steps need to be taken to keep our skies dark at night.
Rural schools in the North State are scrambling to find funding after Congress failed to reauthorize federal funds. Also, fire marshalls across the state are updating wildfire risk maps following the destructive Los Angeles County fires, and musician Rogê shares his Brazilian roots and history through his music. The Latin Grammy-nominated artist will be performing in Chico on Sunday.
