According to the Associated Press, a California lawmaker has introduced a bill to prioritize descendants of slaves in admissions at the University of California and California State University, two of the nation's largest public university systems. Assemblymember Isaac Bryan, a Los Angeles Democrat, said the measure aims to address historical and ongoing discrimination. “We have a moral responsibility to right these wrongs,” Bryan said. The proposal comes amid national debates over diversity initiatives following the Supreme Court's 2023 ruling against affirmative action. While legacy admissions remain, often benefiting wealthy, white applicants, critics argue this exacerbates inequalities. Bryan's legislation aligns with recommendations from California's Black reparations task force, though similar efforts have faced mixed results. Learn more about your ad choices. California pet owners struggling to find a rental that accepts their furry, four-legged family members could have an easier time leasing new housing under proposed state legislation that would ban blanket no-pets policies and prohibit landlords from charging additional fees for pets. Proponents of Assembly Bill 2216, which is awaiting a vote of the full Assembly, say the lack of pet-friendly housing is pushing renters to forgo secure housing or relinquish beloved pets to overcrowded shelters. They say the legislation would allow more tenants hiding pets to come out of the shadows. But property owners and apartment associations are pushing back on the legislation, saying that they're worried over the cost of repairs, liability over potential dog bites, and nuisance issues that might drive away other tenants. Also, state lawmakers last year capped rental security deposits to one month's rent, which some landlords say is not enough to scrub out urine and feces stains in carpets or repair damage to wood floors. “If we continue to pass regulations that make it more difficult to provide housing, it's going to drive up the cost of housing for both pet owners and non-pet owners. And that's fundamentally unfair,” said Russell Lowery, executive director of the California Rental Housing Association. The proposal authored by Assemblymember Matt Haney, a San Francisco Democrat and chair of the renters' caucus, would not require all landlords to accept common household pets, such as cats and dogs. But landlords would have to provide reasonable justifications related to issues, such as public health or animal control for denying a tenant with a pet. A landlord could not inquire about pets until after approving an applicant, and applicants would have to notify the landlord of pets at least three days prior to signing a lease. The landlord also could not require additional rent or a security deposit for a pet. The landlord could also set “reasonable conditions,” such as leashing requirements and limits on the number of animals allowed in a unit based on the unit's size. Animal welfare groups are among those supporting the bill. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

California would ban all plastic shopping bags in 2026 under a new bill announced February 8 in the state Legislature. California already bans thin plastic shopping bags at grocery stores and other shops, but shoppers at checkout can purchase bags made with a thicker plastic that purportedly makes them reusable and recyclable. Democratic state Sen. Catherine Blakespear said people are not reusing or recycling those bags. She points to a state study that found the amount of plastic shopping bags trashed per person grew from 8 pounds per year in 2004 to 11 pounds per year in 2021. “It shows that the plastic bag ban that we passed in this state in 2014 did not reduce the overall use of plastic. It actually resulted in a substantial increase in plastic,” Blakespear, a Democrat from Encinitas, said. “We are literally choking our planet with plastic waste.” Twelve states, including California, already have some type of statewide plastic bag ban in place, according to the environmental advocacy group Environment America Research & Policy Center. Hundreds of cities across 28 states also have their own plastic bag bans in place. The California Legislature passed its statewide ban on plastic bags in 2014. The law was later affirmed by voters in a 2016 referendum. If the Legislature passes this bill, it would be up to Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom to decide whether to sign it into law. As San Francisco's mayor in 2007, Newsom signed the nation's first plastic bag ban. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Episode 203-Proposed California Assembly Bill 957 and the Michigan "Hate Speech" Bill. The proposed California Bill 957 will force Courts to rule in child custody cases according to which parent "affirms" the gender identity of their child. A parent could lose custody of their child if they refuse to go along with the gender confusion of their child. While this case is currently about divorce child custody decisions, it sets the stage for Courts to remove children from intact homes for "child abuse" of not "affirming gender transitioning." And Michigan's House just passed a Bill that revises their "Hate Crimes" Law to include "gender identity", but also can put someone in prison for speech that someone says merely made them "feel" intimidated or threatened. How should Christians respond? Do we blatantly violate these laws?

A new California bill would require that youth receive so-called “gender affirming care” … even if it means removing them from the custody of their parents to do so. If passed, SB 107 would, according to the California Family Council, “empower California courts to take ‘temporary emergency jurisdiction' of children if they come to California for trans-drugs, surgery, or mental healthcare.” This would not only apply to parents and children who are California residents, but to children who travel to California from anywhere in the country. As one attorney put it, “SB 107 may be the most brazen assault on fundamental parental rights in the history of this state.” This bill is the culmination of destructive and backwards ideas: that gender affirmation means rejecting the body, that removing healthy organs is the right way to treat gender dysphoria, that “trans kids” are expressing an innate identity instead of a temporary experience, and that parents who question invasive procedures deserve to have their kids taken away from them. Ideas have consequences. If this bill becomes law, there will be many victims of these bad ideas.
