Different belief systems describe Paramatma in different ways. Depending on our belief system, the appearance of Paramatma changes and if HE appears in front of us in a different shape or form, it would be impossible to recognise. Similarly, Arjun was treating Krishna like a friend for decades. He couldn't recognise that Krishna is Paramatma till he saw HIS Vishwaroopam. He profoundly apologises and says that "Thinking of You as my friend, I presumptuously addressed You as, 'O Krishna', 'O Yadav', 'O my dear Friend'. I was ignorant of Your majesty, showing negligence and undue affection. And if, jestfully, I treated You with disrespect or insulted you, while playing, resting, sitting, eating, when alone, or before others —for all that I crave forgiveness" (11.41-11.42). Like Arjun, the same would happen to any of us. When we reach that eternal state of surrender, we realise that everyone around us is a part of the same Paramatma. Every person, animal or tree would become Paramatma, whether they are aware of it or not. Our earlier behaviour with them would look awful and the only option is to seek forgiveness like Arjun is doing. Many cultures preach and practice forgiveness, gratitude and prostration to attain this eternal state of freedom. In the eleventh chapter of Srimad Bhagavatam, there is a long conversation between Krishna and his childhood friend Udhav. At the end of the conversation, Udhav requests a very simple path toward salvation. Krishna replies that prostrate to a thief, a donkey or an enemy like you prostrate to ME. This path is very simple to understand but very tough to inculcate. This is the same as when Krishna said 'to realise all beings in the self; self in all beings and see HIM everywhere' (6.29) which can be easily achieved by dropping hatred (5.3).
Verse 2.51 - 2.54 कर्मजं बुद्धियुक्ता हि फलं त्यक्त्वा मनीषिण: | जन्मबन्धविनिर्मुक्ता: पदं गच्छन्त्यनामयम् || 51|| karma-jaṁ buddhi-yuktā hi phalaṁ tyaktvā manīṣhiṇaḥ janma-bandha-vinirmuktāḥ padaṁ gachchhanty-anāmayam कर्मजं (karmajaṃ) - born of action, बुद्धियुक्ता (buddhiyuktā) - endowed with intelligence, हि (hi) - indeed, फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit, त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having renounced, मनीषिण: (manīṣiṇaḥ) - wise people, जन्मबन्धविनिर्मुक्ता: (janmabandhavinirmuktāḥ) - freed from the bondage of birth, पदं (padaṃ) - state, गच्छन्त्यनामयम् (gacchantyanāmayam) - attain the disease-free. Wise individuals, possessing a balanced intellect, relinquish the attachment to the outcomes of their actions that entrap them in the cycle of birth and death. By operating with this awareness, they achieve a state free from all suffering. यदा ते मोहकलिलं बुद्धिर्व्यतितरिष्यति | तदा गन्तासि निर्वेदं श्रोतव्यस्य श्रुतस्य च || 52|| yadā te moha-kalilaṁ buddhir vyatitariṣhyati tadā gantāsi nirvedaṁ śhrotavyasya śhrutasya cha यदा (yadā) - when, ते (te) - your, मोहकलिलं (mohakalilaṃ) - delusion or confusion, बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect, व्यतितरिष्यति (vyatitariṣyati) - transcends, तदा (tadā) - then, गन्तासि (gantāsi) - you will attain, निर्वेदं (nirvedaṃ) - dispassion, श्रोतव्यस्य (śrotavyasya) - to be heard, श्रुतस्य (śrutasya) - of what has been heard, च (ca) - and. When your intellect transcends the confusion and delusion, then you will attain dispassion for what is yet to be heard and what has been heard. श्रुतिविप्रतिपन्ना ते यदा स्थास्यति निश्चला | समाधावचला बुद्धिस्तदा योगमवाप्स्यसि || 53|| śhruti-vipratipannā te yadā sthāsyati niśhchalā samādhāv-achalā buddhis tadā yogam avāpsyasi श्रुतिविप्रतिपन्ना (śrutivipratipannā) - not allured by the fruitive sections of the Vedas, ते (te) - your, यदा (yadā) - when, स्थास्यति (sthāsyati) - becomes, निश्चला (niścalā) - steady, समाधावचला (samādhāvacalā) - steadfast in meditation, बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect, तदा (tadā) - then, योगमवाप्स्यसि (yogamavāpsyasi) - you will attain yoga. When your intellect is no longer enticed by the materialistic and ritualistic aspects of the Vedas and remains firmly anchored in divine consciousness, you will then achieve the state of complete Yoga. अर्जुन उवाच | स्थितप्रज्ञस्य का भाषा समाधिस्थस्य केशव | स्थितधी: किं प्रभाषेत किमासीत व्रजेत किम् || 54|| arjuna uvācha sthita-prajñasya kā bhāṣhā samādhi-sthasya keśhava sthita-dhīḥ kiṁ prabhāṣheta kim āsīta vrajeta kim अर्जुन उवाच: स्थितप्रज्ञस्य का भाषा (sthita-prajñasya kā bhāṣā) - language of one established in steady wisdom समाधिस्थस्य केशव (samādhi-sthasya keśava) - O Krishna, one established in meditative absorption स्थितधीर् जन्तुर् न प्रब्हाषेत (sthita-dhīr jan-tur na prabhāṣet) - a person of steady intellect does not speak कुत: आभत् अस्ति किम् (kuta ābhataḥ asti kim) - where does he come from, what is he, how does he exist? Arjuna asked, "O Keshava, what is the state of mind of one who is situated in divine consciousness? How does an enlightened person speak? How does he sit? How does he walk?" The view that the mind and all its workings is a function of the brain, is probably the most commonly held understanding of the mind in the world today. But the yogic view is radically different. There was an appreciation that we exist as eternal spiritual beings, temporarily occupying a gross material body, and also covered by a subtle material body constituted primarily of the mind. Three Vedic verses I quote speak to this: "The individual is the passenger in the chariot of the material body, and intelligence is the driver. Mind is the driving instrument, and the senses are the horses. The self is thus the enjoyer or sufferer in the association of the mind and senses. So it is understood by great thinkers." - Katha Upanisad 1.3.3-4 The working senses are superior to dull matter; mind is higher than the senses; intelligence is still higher than the mind; and he [the soul] is even higher than the intelligence. - Bhagavad-gita 3.42 Transcendentalists who are advanced in knowledge compare the body, which is made by the order of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, to a chariot. The senses are like the horses; the mind, the master of the senses, is like the reins; the objects of the senses are the destinations; intelligence is the chariot driver; and consciousness, which spreads throughout the body, is the cause of bondage in this material world. - Bhagavat Purana 7.15.41 The goal of human life promoted in the Vedas was to achieve spiritual liberation from material entanglement through self-realization. This involved exercising control of the mind as opposed to being enslaved and victimized by it. One must deliver himself with the help of his mind, and not degrade himself. The mind is the friend of the conditioned soul, and his enemy as well. - Bhagavad-gita 6.5 For one who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends; but for one who has failed to do so, his mind will remain the greatest enemy. - Bhagavad-gita 6.6 A deeper understanding of the mind and how it affects us was integral to the practice of yoga. Such an understanding is found in the Yoga Sutra: The mind is not self-illuminating being itself an object of perception (that which is knowable). YS 4.19 Not being self-luminous, the mind cannot be aware of an object and itself (as perceiver and perceived) at the same time. YS 4.20 The pure and transcendental consciousness of the atma (self) is unchangeable. When the mind receives the reflection of that consciousness it is able to perceive and appears like the seer. YS 4.22 The mind, being able to perceive due to its reflecting both the atma (self) and objects of perception, appears to comprehend everything. YS 4.23 Even though the mind has accumulated various impressions (and desires) of various types it is always at the disposal of the atma (self). This is because the mind cannot function without the power of the perceiver. YS 4.24 There was an appreciation of how an uncontrolled mind was seen as an enemy of the self: This uncontrolled mind is the greatest enemy of the living entity. If one neglects it or gives it a chance, it will grow more and more powerful and will become victorious. Although it is not factual, it is very strong. It covers the constitutional position of the self/atma. - Bhagavat Purana 5.11.17 In the Bhagavad-gita there is an observation by Arjuna as to the difficulty of controlling the mind, but also a reassurance by Sri Krishna that it is possible: For the mind is restless, turbulent, obstinate and very strong, O Krishna, and to subdue it, I think, is more difficult than controlling the wind. - Bhagavad-gita 6.34 See Facebook page for full description

Arjun asks, "O Krishna, you praise renunciation of actions (karma-sanyas) and yet you also advise their performance at the same time. Tell me with certainty, which is the better path." (5.1) On an earlier occasion too, Arjun was looking for certainty (3.2) between the paths of Sankhya (wisdom or awareness) and Karma (3.1). Krishna, however, does not advise renunciation of karma (action) and instead, he says that one doesn't attain siddhi (perfection) by renunciation of karma (3.4). One Is compelled to perform karmas as per his Gunas (qualities or characters) (3.5). In fact, even maintenance of the human body is not possible without karma (3.8). Clarity comes from the subsequent reply of Krishna that karma-sanyas is a part of Sankhya yoga. Basically, Karma has two sides. One is the executor or Karta and another is Karma-phal (fruits of action). Dropping the sense of doership (kartapan) by realising that gunas are the real Karta is referred to by Arjun as Karma-sanyas. He subsequently refers to doing karma without expecting karma-phal as the performance of karma. In essence, Arjun was enquiring whether to drop Kartapan or Karma-phal. Krishna replies that salvation is found both by renunciation and the performance of actions. But of these, the yoga of action is better than the renunciation of actions (5.2). The point to be noted is that this reply is specific to Arjun who is worried about the fruits of action, which is the demise of his teachers, family and friends in the battle of Kurukshetra. Broadly, this applies to many of us being mind oriented like Arjun. Krishna clarifies that only children, not the wise, speak of Sankhya and Karma yoga differently. He who is truly established in one obtains fruits of both (5.4). In essence, the two paths may be different, but the destination is the same.
