Uruvi's journey to reconcile with the social implications of her marriage and gaining acceptance within Karna's family is a gripping tale of love and intelligence. The conversation also covers the Apsaras' art of seduction and how Satyavati wielded more political power than Draupadi. Streamed live on Nov 13, 2022 • #ParamahansaYogananda #YSS #kriyayoga Self-Realization Fellowship sannyasini Draupadi Mai shares wisdom from the teachings of Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda in her talk on: “Kriya Yoga: Quickening Our Human Evolution.” She begins with a quote by Yoganandaji — “The purpose and goal of Yoga is to regain the lost paradise of soul consciousness by which man knows that he is, and ever has been, one with Spirit.” Draupadi Mai explains that by the specific practice of the sacred science of Kriya Yoga, we can regain that lost paradise of soul consciousness, and by reclaiming our forgotten divinity we can also free ourselves from the fear and suffering that this world of inconstancies brings—and find safety in the ever-new joy of changeless Spirit. “Paramahansa Yoganandaji says that yoga is not only a means for God-communion, but self-transformation; we must consciously attempt to purify unwanted behaviours to prepare us for higher states of realization,” Mai said, explaining how we can anchor our consciousness in our true nature, so we can express our soul qualities of peace, harmony, intuitive insight. Referring to the definition of yoga by the ancient Indian sage Patanjali: “Chitta Vritti Nirodha,” or the cessation of the whirlpool of thoughts and emotions that ceaselessly arise within us, Mai explained: “By Kriya Yoga meditation, the mind and emotions become calm and undisturbed….Then we can also view situations and people with clarity; respond respectfully and clearly to the challenges we face or the activities we engage in; and in all situations to live a dharmic life making wise choices that align with right living.” This discourse was live-streamed on the closing day of a three-day spiritual programme at YSS Ranchi ashram on Sunday, November 13, 2022. *** To attend an upcoming discourse by SRF sannyasini Brahmani Mai, please visit https://yssi.org/BrahmaniMai-Talk *** Learn more about the “Yogoda Satsanga Lessons,” Paramahansa Yoganandaji's home-study course on the science of meditation and art of balanced spiritual living: https://yssi.org/lessons To read Paramahansa Yogananda's “Autobiography of a Yogi”: https://yssi.org/AoY To learn more about how to participate in YSS online group meditations and see the full calendar of events for the YSS Online Dhyana Kendra: https://yssi.org/OnlineMeditation-Cal... *** For the latest content from YSS: https://yssi.org/Eventshttps://yssi.org/YouTubehttps://yssi.org/Books *** #YogodaSatsangaSociety#HowToLiveWisdom#ParamahansaYogananda#YSS#SelfRealizationFellowship#yogameditation #kriyayoga #evolution

Kumaravyasa's Bharata is a crown jewel of Kannada literature, beloved by scholars and common people alike. In this 15th-century classic, Kumaravyasa reimagines Vyasa's epic, making it more compact, dramatic, closer to everyday life and language. He dispenses with most didactic material, cuts out subsidiary tales, and concludes with the end of the war. Here, Krishna, who is cool, clever, charming, and charismatic, is the central character, but many others, such as Draupadi, Karna, and Duryodhana leave an indelible mark. He narrates the story through fast-moving, deftly crafted situations, where characters confront grand conflicts and articulate subtle and complex emotions in brilliant metaphorical language. In this series of masterclasses, Professors SN Sridhar and Krishnamurthy Hanuru will introduce the audience to several aspects of Kumaravyasa's poetic genius, illustrating them with the modern English translations the first volume of which has just been published as The Kannada Mahabharata by Harvard University Press in the Murty Classical Library of India series. The first episode places the poet in relation to his life and times, discusses his unique poetic manifesto, outlines the work, and highlights his originality in the way he creatively transforms Vyasa's prototype of the Mahabharata and Pampa's version. In this episode of BIC Talks Professors Sridhar and Hanuru illustrate Kumaravyasa's genius and versatility while analysing what accounts for the enduring popularity of his work for over half a millennium. This is an excerpt from an in-person masterclass series that took place in January 2024. Subscribe to the BIC Talks Podcast on your favourite podcast app! This month, we're discussing dating dilemmas – everything we hate about dating 'trends,' and the few things we don't. This week, monogamy vs polyamory - where has the conversation gone?
Jun 18, 2021 #ParamahansaYogananda #KriyaYoga #GuidedMeditation To commemorate the seventh United Nations International Day of Yoga, Self-Realization Fellowship presents “Yoga — Uniting Our World Family,” a special program of inspiration, guided meditation, and affirmation led by SRF nun Sister Draupadi. Sister Draupadi begins with a brief talk about the importance and benefits of meditation, which Paramahansa Yogananda said was the essential spiritual practice at the heart of yoga, the “science of the soul.” Then she conducts a 35-minute meditation, which includes application of Yogananda's methods of preparing body and mind to meditate, practice of one of his spiritual affirmations on the theme of peace, and periods of silence. The meditation concludes with a period of prayer for healing of all those in need. Paramahansa Yogananda was a key figure in the introduction of India's science of yoga to Westerners. The last in a line of divinely illumined gurus, Yogananda was charged with making available worldwide the ancient and sacred science of Kriya Yoga, which includes certain techniques of meditation whose devoted practice leads to direct, personal experience of God. Yogananda wrote, “Had India no other gift for the world, Kriya Yoga alone would suffice as a kingly offering.” To learn more about the Self-Realization Fellowship Lessons, the home-study course that Yogananda created to teach the science of meditation and the art of balanced spiritual living: https://yogananda.org/lessons Participate in other Day of Yoga guided meditations from SRF: German: • Geleitete Meditation mit Bruder Nikhi... Streamed live on Aug 17, 2022 #SRFConvocation #Yogananda #SRF “There is a personal element in the search for God that is more important than mastery over the whole science of Yoga.” With these words Paramahansa Yogananda emphasized how vital it is for each of us to form a close personal relationship with the Divine. But how do we discover our own inner connection, and become aware of that loving Presence in the moments of our lives? How can we create a deeply devotional, compelling, trusting, and joyous relationship with God as Father, Mother, Friend, Guru, and Divine Beloved? Streamed live on Aug 13, 2020 #SRFConvocation #TheGuru #Yogananda The Guru's purpose on earth is not to draw anyone to himself, but to guide us back to God. As part of the Day 5 (Thursday) schedule of the 2020 SRF World Convocation, SRF nun Sister Draupadi will give a class discussing how to better tune in with the guidance of the Divine through the Guru. Sister Draupadi will speak to the idea that as we respond to the Guru's loving, internal guidance and strive to embody his teachings, we gradually and automatically become aware of God's presence within us. And we realize that the Guru has given us the greatest possible gift — eternal freedom in God. If one thing Author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is known for is her ability to scout through timelines and transport her readers to another world with ease and poignancy. If 'The Palace of Illusions' and 'The Forest of Enchantment' enabled Draupadi and Sita to break out of their moulds, with her novel 'Independence', she charted a territory that marks, perhaps, yet another milestone in India's partition writings by women. May 8, 2020 #Yogananda #KriyaYoga #unconditionalloveIn the SRF inspirational service “God's Nature in the Mother,” SRF nun Sister Draupadi discusses the Mother aspect of the Divine, and explains that by applying Paramahansa Yogananda's teachings, we help our families live in a higher age of understanding and spiritual balance. She further affirms that as parents deepen their own relationship with God, they also guide the lives of children with ever-increasing love and acceptance. At the beginning of this service given at the SRF International Headquarters in Los Angeles, Sister Draupadi reads from the “Second Coming of Christ” and “God Talks With Arjuna,” Paramahansa Yogananda's commentaries on the New Testament and the Bhagavad Gita, respectively. After describing the ennobling instruction given to children before they entered householder life in the Golden Age of ancient India, she points out that we are truly blessed in our present time to have the Kriya Yoga teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda — which we can apply in our lives in order to live in a higher age, right now. “All of us who have embraced Paramahansa Yogananda's teachings are actually following the teachings of Vedic India,” Sister Draupadi affirms. She conducts a period of divine communion and guided meditation, which includes a chant to God as Divine Mother, from Paramahansaji's book of chants, “Cosmic Chants”: “Engrossed is the bee of my mind On the blue lotus feet of my Divine Mother. Divine Mother, my Divine Mother!” To learn how to practice the Self-Realization Fellowship Lessons—which include the advanced techniques of meditation, including Kriya Yoga, and instruction on balanced spiritual living as taught by Paramahansa Yogananda: https://yogananda.org/lessons To read the book Mejda, the account of the early years of Paramahansa Yogananda written by his brother Sananda Lal Ghosh: https://bookstore.yogananda-srf.org/p... Maharishi Mahesh Yogi said on more than one occasion that free will was God's greatest gift to mankind. And while that may well be, we have to ask ourselves whether we actually make the most of this gift. In this episode, Thom takes us to a pivotal moment in The Mahabharata, when Yudhishthira, the offspring of Dharma, and Arjuna's older brother, puts his wisdom to the test to restore the lives of his brothers.Like much of The Mahabharata, and most Vedic literature, it makes a sobering point about how we can take more responsibility for our own evolution, and bring and end to the cycle of life and death.Episode Highlights:[00:45] Sequence in the Form of Storyline[03:18] Mahabharata: The Story of India's Royal Family[05:06] Exile of the Pandava Brothers and Draupadi[07:30] Nakula and The Crane[09:24] A Genetic Advantage[11:44] Hurtling Towards Death[13:39] A Pivotal Point[14:56] The Most Valuable Asset[17:36] The Ultimate Vedic Teaching[20:03] This is What I Am[21:57] We Form an Opinion of Ourselves[23:57] I Am Also This[25:51] I Am a Human Being, Not Just a Human Doing.[27:30] Longevity is a Fatal Condition[29:57] Make Great Priorities in Life[31:48] Living in Heaven-on-Earth StatusUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.comhttps://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoleshttps://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

In the Indian epic, the Mahabharata, the central character, the fulcrum of the story is Draupadi…in my view. But epics in mythology, the Mahabharata included, are full of tales of male valour. Mythology instills in its male protagonists, high chivalry. Men are always saving women. But whenever women are warriors, they are usually fierce and angry, wreaking vengeful havoc everywhere. I haven't read many historical or mythological stories of calm and collected women whose battle strategies were super-intelligent and saved a bunch of men.Men, valour. Women, wrath. But from where do these messy notions spring? From the stories we have been told. From subjective telling of history, the epics, folklore and mythology. In the Mahabharata, we learned the story of how Yudhishtra gambled away his wife in a game of dice with his cousins and then sat back helplessly and humiliated while she was manhandled in the court. And then of course he went to war and avenged…I am not sure what he was avenging when he was the one who went and gambled her away. And then how did the wife, Draupadi, feel about being used as a poker chip? No one asked her, clearly.Obviously, this narrative needs to change to include questions such as this. And the good thing is that it might just be happening, at an accelerated pace.My guest today, Koral Dasgupta—one among a tribe of writers who seek to re-tell stories from the epics, but from a woman's perspective. Today we talk about her book Draupadi—third in a five-part series of women in mythology, called the Sati series. Most of us in India know Hindu philosophy only by what was repurposed for kids without nuance. As adults—whether or not plumbing the depths of this philosophy is material to our daily mundane, transactions—we find it lends itself to endless interpretation and intellectual excursions. The blurbs on her book praising her, are from noted and respected authors, like Chitra Divakaruni, Saikat Majumdar and Pavan Varma—all of whom have been my guests on this podcast. And Namita Gokhale—whom I hope we will have the honour to feature before long.Koral is deeply philosophical as you will hear. So, let's hear her then.ABOUT KORAL DASGUPTAKoral Dasgupta has published an eclectic range of books. Draupadi is her seventh. Besides India, Koral's books are shelved in university libraries across the world, including Harvard, Columbia, Pennsylvania, Chicago, Wales, Duke, North Carolina and Texas. Her work is discussed in the context of gender studies, art, myth and ecocritical literature. Koral's fourth book has been optioned for screen adaptation.
