Order of Service: - Prelude - Hymn 76 - Father, We Praise Thee, Now the Night is Over - Galatians 4:21-31: Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise, which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar— for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children— but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all. For it is written: “Rejoice, O barren, You who do not bear! Break forth and shout, You who are not in labor! For the desolate has many more children Than she who has a husband.” Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise. But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now. Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.” So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free. - Devotion - Prayer - Hymn 262 - Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah - Blessing - Postlude Service Participants: Rev. Hi, I'm John Sorensen, President of Evangelism Explosion International, and you're listening to Share Life Today. “Guide me, O Thou Great Jehovah, Pilgrim through a barren land.” The late Dr. D. James Kennedy would say these very words every morning before his feet hit the ground. In this season of striving toward the resolutions and goals of a new year, we need to ask ourselves...are we relying on the guidance of God? There are many snares, temptations, and difficulties out there. We desperately need Him and His direction! The Bible says in Proverbs, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path." And God keeps His promises! All He asks from us is that we trust Him. So let me encourage you—pray for God's leading in your life, and He'll will begin to give you opportunities to serve and love Him like never before. And through those, you can have opportunities to trust Him and share the Gospel with others. For resources to get you started, visit sharelife.today.

The letter -he- in the Hebrew alphabet carries with the idea of guidance. -It is used at the beginning of verbs to make them causative... 'Cause me to learn', 'cause me to understand,' 'Cause me to walk' and so forth.- David Guzik--Each of the sentences in this section begins with he and expresses an appeal for guidance. -It is not an appeal for direction in some special case of difficulty, but for a clear manifestation of the meaning of the will of God.- G.C. Morgan --We see a desire not only to know the Word -the -what--, but to understand -the -why-- how it applies to our lives.

August 20, 2023 Worship Service Groveport UMC, Groveport Ohio Rick Birk, Pastor WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS BREAKTHROUGH PRAYER: Amazing God, We pray that through the Holy Spirit Your preferred future for Groveport United Methodist Church will be made clear to us. Give us the courage we need to follow You wherever You may take us. We ask that You bind us together in love so that we can bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to our friends, families, and community. Open our eyes so that we may see the amazing things You are already doing among us. AMEN. PRELUDE “Nearer My God to Thee” LIGHTING OF THE ALTAR CANDLES *OPENING MUSIC “Heaven Came Down” CALL TO WORSHIP: We gather here this day to hear God's word for us. We praise God for the opportunity to gather together. We are sent forth from this place to share God's transforming love. Lord, encourage us and empower us to do Your will. AMEN. HYMN “Seek Ye First” #405 * PRAYER OF CONFESSION: Merciful God, we get so caught up in our own lives and needs that we fail to see others for whom we might provide some help and relief. You challenge us to feed those who are hungry and to quench the thirst of those who are parched. You ask us to bring clothing to those who have none or for whom the clothing is inadequate for the weather; to visit people who are sick, alone, alienated, who are imprisoned either in cells with bars or in conditions of hopelessness and poverty that they see no way out; to welcome the stranger and reach out to those who are marginalized; to always bring Your words of healing and redeeming love. We have failed in these tasks – we ignore the opportunities and claim that we are too busy to help, too busy to care. How this attitude must sadden You, O Lord. You lavish Your gifts upon us that we might use them for the betterment of Your realm, and we treat them as inconveniences. Forgive us, O God. Forgive us and heal our wounds of greed and selfishness. Let us greet this day when the hope of the Reign of Christ can be made manifest and we can be part of this glorious kingdom of peace and compassion. In Jesus' Name, we pray. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. The journey of the Hebrews from the edge of Egypt before the Red Sea all the way to Canaan land was marked by God's cloud. The LORD himself was in the cloud and it gave them protection and guidance.  Exodus 13:21 The Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. The people soon showed a tendency to forget the Lord's protect and the great power of his deliverance at the Red Sea and they began their practice of grumbling against the Lord and against Moses. God guide me O Thou Great Jehovah.-Guide me O Thou great Jehovah,-Pilgrim through this barren land.-I am weak, but You are mighty--Hold me with Your powerful hand.-Bread of Heaven,-Feed me till I want no more.--Verse 2-Open now the crystal fountain,-Whence the healing stream does flow--Let the fire and cloudy pillar-Lead me all my journey through.-Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,-Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.

In this season where we're making resolutions and goals for the next year, we need to ask ourselves...are we relying on the guidance of God? There are many snares, temptations, and difficulties out there. We desperately need Him and His direction! The Bible says in Proverbs, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path." God keeps His promises! All He asks from us is that we trust Him. So before you write down your newest resolution, let me encourage you—pray for God's leading in your life. He will begin to give you opportunities to serve and love Him like never before—and through those, you can have opportunities to trust Him and share the Gospel with others. A Devotional on 2 Kings 17:7-9 7 For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods, 8 And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the Lord cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made. 9 And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the Lord their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city. Order of Service: - Prelude - Hymn 262 - Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah: vv. 1 & 2 - Exodus 14: 21-30: Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided. So the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. And the Egyptians pursued and went after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. Now it came to pass, in the morning watch, that the Lord looked down upon the army of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and cloud, and He troubled the army of the Egyptians. And He took off their chariot wheels, so that they drove them with difficulty; and the Egyptians said, “Let us flee from the face of Israel, for the Lord fights for them against the Egyptians.” Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the waters may come back upon the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen.” And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and when the morning appeared, the sea returned to its full depth, while the Egyptians were fleeing into it. So the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. Then the waters returned and covered the chariots, the horsemen, and all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them. Not so much as one of them remained. But the children of Israel had walked on dry land in the midst of the sea, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. So the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. - Devotion - Prayer - Hymn 262 - Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah: vv. 3 - Blessing - Postlude Service Participants: Rev. Dr. Tom Kuster (Preacher), Rev. Prof. Mark DeGarmeaux (Organist)

Though we think of manna as the bread that God rained down on the wandering Israelite community in the wilderness, “manna” was first a question. “What is it?!” The Israelites draw near enough to the strange flaky substance on the ground to ask “Manna?” and in so doing encounter the answer “Manna!” How might this story, along with the crowd asking Jesus for a daily dose of “bread of life”, inform our curiosity about seeking spiritual sustenance for our own lives?Sermon begins at minute 04:06Scripture: Exodus 16.1-18Image: “Manna,” folio 6, from the Augsburger Book of Miracles (f°6), ca 1552 Hymn: Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah; Words and Music - Public Domain; Text: William Williams; Music: John Hughes. Just as the Israelites were strangers in a strange land, and God guided them to their promised home, we are also pilgrims in a foreign land, on our way to our eternal home. William Williams, traveling preacher of Wales and the Father of Welsh Hymnody, wrote this much-loved hymn, "Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah." Light of the anxious heart, Jesus, Thou dost appear To bid the gloom of guilt depart and shed Thy sweetness here. —Bernard of Clairvaux Just as Paul warns his readers in 1 Corinthians 7 to be “free from anxieties,” the hymns we sing this morning develop themes of setting aside worldly fears in favor of the rest we have in Jesus' finished work. My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less and My Trust Is In The Lord—Psalm 11 contrast a world filled with stormy gales, in which even the foundations are destroyed, with the solid rock of Christ, the Lord in whom we put our trust. O Put Your Trust In God and O Lord Teach Me To Follow You—Psalm 27 encourage us to “rest on His unchanging Word,” to “give to the winds your fears,” and to patiently “wait upon the Lord.” Be Still, My Soul and My Shepherd Will Supply My Need—Psalm 23 instruct us to “leave to Thy God to order and provide” because He is faithful to lead us to a “settled rest.” We close the service with a prayer, Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah: because we are weak and He is mighty, we implore our Lord to hold us, to lead us, feed us, deliver us, and to bid our “anxious fears subside.” —Henry C. Haffner Key Words: Present Distress, Betrothed, Short, Anxieties, Divided, Passions Keystone Verse: I want you to be free from anxieties. (1 Corinthians 7:32)   1 Corinthians 7:25-40 Now concerning the betrothed, I have no command from the Lord, but I give my judgment as one who by the Lord's mercy is trustworthy. 26 I think that in view of the present distress it is good for a person to remain as he is. 27 Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be free. Are you free from a wife? Do not seek a wife. 28 But if you do marry, you have not sinned, and if a betrothed woman marries, she has not sinned. Yet those who marry will have worldly troubles, and I would spare you that. 29 This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, 30 and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, 31 and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. 32 I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. 33 But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife, 34 and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. 35 I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord. 36 If anyone thinks that he is not behaving properly toward his betrothed, if his passions are strong, and it has to be, let him do as he wishes: let them marry—it is no sin. 37 But whoever is firmly established in his heart, being under no necessity but having his desire under control, and has determined this in his heart, to keep her as his betrothed, he will do well. 38 So then he who marries his betrothed does well, and he who refrains from marriage will do even better. 39 A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord. 40 Yet in my judgment she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I too have the Spirit of God.

An excellent hymn that came out of the Great Awakening, one of William Wiliams' finest. It lifts us up in worship and acknowledges our need and dependency on Jehovah in our life's journey. In these times of turmoil, let us renew our reliance on the Lord and look to Him as our strength. It is reported the choir that sings the hymn is a group of Indian Christians who had been threatened to be killed in India a few years ago. The grace of God was upon them and they never relented nor turned from their faith in God. Article taken from Then Sings My Soul, Volumes 1 & 2 by Robert J. Morgan. Copyright © 2003 by Robert J.
