Jersey Jews and Old Coots Turns out I'm a pecker. Things are getting a little passive aggressive at the Target checkout… but then again, who am I to tell you what kid of day to have? Missy buys all the baked goods from the local farmer's market, and discovers a secret horde of faithful challah bakers and septuagenarian sages all volunteering for the common good. Helpful public service? Intrusive and unsolicited judgement? You decide. Amy travels to Annapolis, breaks up a human trafficking ring, keeps calm on the sidelines and starts to unravel her deepest fears (spoiler alert, it's just clothes). Are you ready for the Chicken List? Plus doing things the wrong way, stealing other people's toiletries and lying, but only to yourself. All this and VERY LITTLE DISCUSSION OF REALITY, because, who can stand it. We stand for universal bodily autonomy, separation of church and state, common sense gun reform and crunchy crescent almond cookies. For the past few years, a group of Utah retirees who call themselves the “Old Coots” have been meeting every Saturday morning at the Salt Lake City Farmer’s Market to dispense free advice to the public. “We were sitting outside, bored stiff from talking to each other, and I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to get us a booth across the street at the farmers market, where we can give advice,’ ” Tony Caputo, founder of his namesake deli where the group usually meets, told The Washington Post back in 2018. Things have obviously changed since the pandemic began. The farmer’s market no longer allows booths like the Old Coots offered — but the group is still willing and able to give advice. (They don’t promise that’s it good advice, just that it’s free.) Reporter Kathy Stephenson spoke with Carol Sisco, Tony Caputo and Gus Wheeler about the group’s history, what they’ve been doing the past few months and what we all should be doing with our lives. You can watch the interview on Facebook or Youtube, and you can listen to the audio on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher or wherever you get your podcasts. Tell us what you want to see on the next episode by tweeting #TribTalk or by emailing us at tribtalk@sltrib.com. “Trib Talk” is produced by Jeni Fitzgibbon and Sara Weber.

Introducing, the Old Coots. That’s right they’re the self-proclaimed Old Coots giving Bad Advice and they are with us today. They aren’t a household name yet but they are popping up everywhere because---well---people need advice and apparently, they don’t care if it’s good. It all started when a group of retired friends who meet every Saturday morning at a Salt Lake City deli were growing tired of the same conversation each week. They wanted to share their wisdom beyond their friend group of seven. As a lark, they set up a card table at the nearby farmers market and told people they were dispensing free advice. Have some fun and check out this all new podcast!
