This week, Spycraft 101 returns to the archives to say goodbye to one of our earliest guests. Lee Gossett got his start as a smoke jumper with the US Forest Service in the late 1950s and later served with Air America and Continental Air Services during the Secret War in Laos. He worked and flew all over the world for the Central Intelligence Agency and various special operations units. He appeared twice on the podcast. Although these interviews were recorded several years ago, Lee and Justin stayed in touch on at least a monthly basis, and he's been a regular listener since that time. He was a friend as well, and we'll miss him. But we're grateful that we had the chance to get to know him in the first place. Rest in peace, Lee. Justin's guest for today is Julian Fisher, a former British intelligence operative espionage specialist and author of Think Like A Spy. Following a stint in government service, Julian headed up Africa operations for a private military company and then founded his own intelligence boutique specializing in Africa. In 2017, he was the lead trainer on the Channel Four reality series Spies, which put 16 ordinary members of the public through a series of challenges to find out if they had what it takes to be a spy. Julian has led an unusual life in his time. He's seen off camel wrestlers in Somalia, faced down gun toting soldiers in Congo, trained a newly formed intelligence service in South Sudan, and been invited to help plot a coup in West Africa, which he declined. Julian can show you how to take the hard lessons learned over centuries of international espionage and use those same strategies to accomplish your goals in almost any environment or context. This episode, SECRET MISSION (1942) – Decoded explores one of the most unusual spy films ever made. We examine this wartime espionage movie created without hindsight or guaranteed victory SECRET MISSION Background In this episode of Cracking the Code of Spy Movies, we return to Britain in 1942. World War II is still raging, Europe is occupied, and the outcome is terrifyingly uncertain. Out of that uncertainty comes SECRET MISSION (1942), a spy film that treats espionage as survival, not fantasy. Unlike later spy movies, this film offers no gadgets, swagger, or invincible heroes. Instead, it presents secrecy, fear, restraint, and the danger of being noticed. Every choice matters, and every mistake risks lives. What we decode for SECRET MISSION (1942) The episode breaks down how SECRET MISSION functions as both cinema and wartime instruction. It was propaganda, but also a sober reflection of real intelligence work. The discussion places the film within its historical context, explaining why 1942 truly matters We analyze performances by James Mason, Hugh Williams, Carla Lehmann, and Michael Wilding. James Mason's quiet, observant presence stands in stark contrast to later Bond-style heroes. Here, being invisible is success. The episode also explores civilian involvement and moral cost. Helping a spy could destroy an entire family. We must also remember that trust is fragile, alliances are uncertain, and no one is fully safe. Spycraft takes precedence over action in this movie: Code phrases, compartmentalization, and limited knowledge drive the tension. This approach connects SECRET MISSION to later realistic spy films like The Third Man and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Ultimately, this episode argues that SECRET MISSION reveals the foundation beneath modern espionage cinema. Before Bond became myth, spying was quiet, dangerous, and rarely celebrated. That reality is what makes this forgotten film worth decoding today. Episode Highlights How this movie coming out DURING the war was impacted by the fact that outcome of World War II hadn't yet been decided. Espionage is portrayed as restraint, not spectacle James Mason in an early, anti-Bond role Realistic spycraft over action and gadgets Wartime cinema as psychological preparation In addition, we talk about this poster that was used in the movie. Is it a real poster? What was its purpose? Tell us what you think about our decoding of SECRET MISSION (1942) Have you seen this movie yet? If not, did listening to this episode make you want to watch it? On the other hand, if you have seen it, where do Dan and Tom get it right, and where do they get it wrong? Let us know your thoughts, ideas for future episodes, and what you think of this episode. Just drop us a note at info@spymovienavigator.com. What happens when an average guy suddenly inherits a global villain empire? Not metaphorically. Not “my boss is evil.”Actual secret lairs, corporate espionage, assassination attempts… and sentient cats who absolutely know more than they're telling.Today, I'm giving a spoiler-lite review of Starter Villain, a fast, hilarious, and surprisingly sharp novel from John Scalzi that blends spy-craft, corporate satire, and absurdist humor into one wildly entertaining package. In this episode, I cover:• Why the premise works far better than it has any right to• How Scalzi turns villainy into a workplace comedy• Why the cats are a genuine highlight (and mildly terrifying)• What kind of reader will love this book—and who might not• Why this was the perfect read right before the new Dresden Files novel droppedI was laughing out loud again and again, and this one instantly pushed more Scalzi books higher up my TBR.Have you read Starter Villain yet?Are you team “Never Trust the Cats”?Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Today Justin talks to retired FBI Special Agent Sheldon Fung. Sheldon has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry from the University of California Davis, and a Master's Degree in Criminology and Weapons of Mass Destruction from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. spent more than 21 years with the FBI as a bomb technician and a WMD coordinator. He's here to discuss one of the biggest WMD cases he ever worked on, which began in Irvine, California in March, 2000, after a local man named Dr. Larry Ford attempted to have his business partner killed in a professional hit. Sheldon and his team became involved when the investigation took a shocking turn when biological agents and a buried arms cache were discovered in his home, along with evidence that connected Ford to the South African government and even the Central Intelligence Agency. Justin covered this case himself already for episode 93 of the podcast back in May 2023, which you might remember if you're a longtime listener, but today we'll hear from one of the primary investigators. SPY GAME (2001) looks like a slick, early-2000s spy thriller, but beneath Tony Scott's kinetic style is a surprisingly thoughtful film about loyalty, institutional cynicism, and the quiet mechanics of real espionage. Rather than gadgets or superhuman assassins, SPY GAME is about phone calls, favors, leverage, and knowing the system well enough to bend it without breaking it. Robert Redford plays Nathan Muir, a veteran CIA operative on his final day before retirement, racing against the clock to save his former protégé Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt), who has been captured in a Chinese prison after going off-mission. What unfolds is less an action spectacle and more a chess match fought through bureaucracy, institutional blind spots, and decades of accumulated spycraft. As the film moves between past missions and present-day interrogation rooms, SPY GAME becomes a story about mentorship, moral compromise, and the cost of serving systems that treat people as expendable assets. Redford delivers one of his most restrained performances, while Tony Scott proves that a “popcorn director” can still find real heart beneath the spectacle.
