Mysteries abound this week on EarWax! Never has "the man, the myth, the legend" rang truer than when we dive into "Who Is William Onyeabor?"A bizarre mix of funk, soul, and porto-techno, this record is a collection of songs pulled from Onyeabor's brief but prolific discography. His life and career remain largely enigmatic, due in no small part to his own efforts. We ask "why" and "how," because we want so badly to understand the context for which such forward-thinking music sprang. Ultimately, "Who Is William Onyeabor?" provides very little answers to those questions, but it serves a greater purpose - it grooves. Thanks for listening! Nearly 1 in 3 people are perfectionists. While many carry it as a badge of honor, or use it as an explanation as to why they have not completed or started something, it really is a dream killer. Perfectionism creates unnecessary pressure, amps up worry, fear and doubt. It is one form of procrastination, something nearly all of us encounter at least occasionally, 20% of us chronically. It is possible, and I'd say necessary, to break-free from perfectionism and create an identity that is more self-supportive. Elizabeth Onyeabor is a leading international expert on perfectionist leaders and high achievers. As the Founder of InnerGenuity and Habitual Happiness Hub, she coaches leaders ready to move forward with ease, be their best, and achieve unstoppable results. She shares the four main reasons why people procrastinate, 7 Practical Practices for Perfectionists that will help you start letting go of your perfectionist tendencies, and Elizabeth reveals the one thing you can start practicing today that will help you lead a more joyful life. A disfrutar!
The Album: William Onyeabor: Who Is William Onyeabor? (2013) Benjamin Booker rocks. His soulful blend of blues, rock soul and punk, together with hella honest lyrics and an inimitable voice has moved folks across his self titled debut and latest album Witness. He joined us to talk about his discovery of Luaka Bop’s World Psychedelic Classics 5: Who Is William Onyeabor? It was love at first listen. He loved the moog and the drums, the minimalism and the disco elements. He loved the message. We talked about William Onyeabor's reclusiveness, foreshadowing in lyrics, African music across many genres and the coolness of a white cowboy hat. "¿No visitamos mucho África, no?".

The silkily-voiced Garzon-Montano toured with Lenny Kravitz last year, and Crawl is only one of a slew of songs I've been hitting rewind to from his debut album. Noname has dropped one of the most beautifully subtle soul albums of 2016, but it's only now I've found the the time for a proper listen. Manc hip hop from longtime pal Dubbul O hits hard and pays tribute to Gang Starr with its title. Paul White's beat on Lion's Den is dreamy. Synths abound from Aim, Survive, Mogwai and Onyeabor. Lord Echo provides this episode's title and Jungle Fire are back with their second album, Jambu. Piano soul from Sampha and Joseph Scaturro, crazy funk from Thundercat and pure jump-up South American rhythm from Quantic and Nidia. The theme from one of my favourite films, bass from the Cosmic Bridge stable with a Transformers reference and one from the Havana meets Kingston project. Hope you hear something you like! This week we take time to remember one of Nigeria's greatest, most influential musicians: Mr. William "The Chief" Onyeabor. Spanning over eight years, William Onyeabor released nine albums, but never once played a live show. It wasn't until recently that the founder of Luaka Bop! and frontman to the Talking Heads, David Byrne, rediscovered his incredible catalog of music. Though shrouded in mystery, pieces of William Onyeabor's life have surfaced and been revealed. He was a business man, a family man, a community man, and an outspoken activist for peace in Nigeria and throughout the world. Please enjoy this special episode dedicated to a great musician, and a great man.
